Outfield: The Dodgers, Giants and Manny
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 6, 2009 3:20 pm

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes Manny Ramirez is still seeking a four-year, $100 million contract.

In a poll to MetsBlog.com, 52 percent of the more-than 5,000 people who voted said they would not give Ramirez a guaranteed three-year, $75 million deal to sign with the Mets.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers are holding firm on their initial two-year, $45 million offer, reports Tim Brown for Yahoo! Sports, who also believes Ramirez is still seeking four or five years.

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus believes the Giants may be preparing two different offers for Ramirez, one that is worth three guaranteed years for $36 million, and another that guarantees two years, but holds an option for a third and fourth season, which could ultimately be worth $100 million.

However, according to Rosenthal, Ramirez is only ‘cool to the idea of playing in San Francisco.’

In the end, Jon Heyman of SI.com still feels the Giants and Dodgers will be Ramirez’s top suitors.

Last week, in a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano explained why there is little chance Ramirez ends up in Queens, despite Omar Minaya’s interest.

Speaking of outfielders…

Bobby Abreu is still seeking a three-year, $48 million deal, according to Brown’s previously mentioned report for Yahoo!.

Lastly, Milton Bradley signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Cubs, according to multiple reports.

      hey!!!
THIS IS HOW A MAJOR MARKET TEAM GETS A PREMIUM HITTER. TOO BAD THE METS ARENT IN NY (oh, thats right, they are…too bad the wilpons dont realize it). TURN OMAR LOOSE ON MANNY!!!!!!

Bringing him in would damn near guarantee a championship. So of course he’ll be a Giant.

    • alex242 says:

      LMAO!!!!!

you couldn’t have said it better, while the yankees spend wisely (long term dumber) we get stuck wit looking at rejects from the yankees (abreu) and boston (varitek)… great wilpon.. ur doing a great job

      • Xavier22 says:

Yeah, Putz and K-Rod are really bottom-of-the-scrap-heap rejects. And remember when the Yankees signed Beltran and Santana?

        • nostradamus says:

yeah, and those moves obviously were not enough! the missing ingredient is a clutch productive premium righty bat that can play LF…..hmmmmm, i wonder who that could be……clue: manny!

  3. NYCESQ says:

For the love of God, can we sign someone else while we wait for Lowe’s market to settle?

If we are standing pat with our offer, does that mean we are going to cease operations totally?

    Very frustrating.

  4. QnsNative1718 says:

It is. Omar implied the other day, he plans to move from issue to the next.

  5. ravi3 says:

I don’t think that the Manny issue will be resolved before Lowe…Boras I’m sure REALLY wants to get the Mets involved, in order to drive up Manny’s price. On our end, if Omar is able to bring in Lowe at an affordable rate (i.e. 3/36-40) I think he will go back to the Wilpons and beg for their permission to get Manny, on a 1-2 yr deal with a higher AAV than the Dodgers. Perhaps 2 yrs at 27M/yr?…It just makes too much sense for the team for so many reasons, not the least of which is that he would cement the offense. He will also bring back credibility in the eyes of the fans (and opposition) after two failed seasons. Plus, I’m sure Fred wants to open Citi with a BANG. Lastly, there are the merchandising opportunities with a player of his caliber. Can you imagine the buzz with two great players going for their 500th HR at Citi, in Manny and Delgado? Furthermore, The Mets have a lot more money coming off the books next season, and will need to replace the power of Delgado, so its really a 1 year hit.

  6. NYCESQ says:

    Dear Wlipons,

I know you don’t read this, but maybe your neighbor’s son does. Please make a big splash this off season.

    Sincerely,
    A hopeful Mets fan

  7. mrmustseetv says:

Wow, the 52% of the fans that voted against getting Manny are sooooo wrong and I’m sure they will be the loudest 52% when Tatis and Murphy turn into bust.

Look I’m not saying they will, but what is to say that Tatis was not a one-year surprise or that Murphy won’t regress? Why because Murphy plays hard? Fans are so quick to turn decent prospects into Hall of Famers. I remember when people went nuts when Jason Phillips got traded, or Jae Seo. Not everyone is Scott Kazmir.

Manny will still be productive for the next 2 years. Are we really serious in saying we would not rather have his bat in favor of Tatis/Murphy.

    Come on!

    • ravi3 says:

I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure the key issue in the poll for Manny was the contract length. There were some polls for Manny at a 1 or 2 yr deal, which most people were for….I’d also be hesitant to give Manny a 3 yr deal.

      • Xavier22 says:

Exactly. This is a often overlooked point by the Manny-acs.

If the Manny was open to a 1 or even a 2 year deal, the Mets should get involved. Anything more in terms of contract length is not worth it.

        • saber-toothed tiger says:

It’s not easy to predict the amount of fall-off in Manny’s offensive production 3 years from now. He has a short, quick, compact swing and hits with power to all fields. Hitters that have a long swing tend to suddenly drop off the face of the earth. If Manny brings post season appearances with one or two WS titles to the Mets franchise in the next two years that the Mets would not have had otherwise then I think we could live with a decline in production 3 years from now. It’s a gamble but less so than investing with Bernard L. Madoff.

          • just-mlb says:

Basically the same reason why we gave Pedro the extra year or 2 in his contract..

u overpay because u KNOW u HAVE to have that guy…

the only difference was that Pedro was not known to be a cancer in the clubhouse

  8. alex242 says:

don’t tell that to omar,he signed him even though i guess he didn’t see the game where tatis broke his wrist or shoulder whatever making that dumb play in left field.. omar sometimes i feel like he wants to help his fellow players/friends!!!

  9. nostradamus says:

    manny is the answer. period.

  10. jrg1397 says:

Manny is such a no brainer. It sickens me. it reminds me of vlad guerrero. He could have been in queens but the wilpons could not pull the triggor. When we need to gamble and take a chance we don’t do it. Manny should have been a Met 3 weeks after the world series. He is the best offensive player in the league. He hits for averege, clutch, Rbi, power. what more do you want. yet we are obssesed wit lowe only. we need that clutch hitter to bring beltran and reyes home. our pen wouldnt be so tense couse we would be up by 10 instead of just 3

  11. mdfalcha says:

Manny: 4 years $22.5 million per. Guaranteed. That offer would make him a Met. Then do everything in your power to make him happy. Put a personal bathroom out in left field for him. Whatever it takes.

  12. vic79 says:

    haha oh Manny

Watch them get Abreau just to make everyone mad

  13. short-trader says:

3 guaranteed years at $36mil ? That can’t be right. Should it be $56mil ?

  14. jrg1397 says:

one thing that gets me sick is the idea that he is a distraction. Jesus, are we dealing with adult or little biatches. Its baseball not Rocket Science. If manny acts up what does that have to do with Reyes stealing Second or wrigh throwing to 1st with out an error. this I dea that he would be distraction is so overblown its stupid. I have annoying coworkers that doesnot give me the excuse to do crappy work I still have to performe. We need to hold each player responsible for there own play and not blame it on distractions.

  15. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

Ive said it before, Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman are on Scott Boras’ payroll.

The mystery “suitors” are always reported by Heyman and the outrageous dollars by Rosenthal.

Im obviously kidding but it is pretty odd

  16. Genesis Does says:

We have needed a Right handed power hitting left fielder since Alou got hurt for the 26th time. Matt Holiday was already traded, Burrell signed with the Rays (man it wouldve been sweet to have him come here and murder the phillies) the only one left is Manny.

Unless they see FMart coming up VERY soon, in which case, we need to get rid of a lefty, Id love to replace Schneider with Bengie Molina

    • nostradamus says:

true dat abount manny. but it appears that the wilpons are alergic to clutch productive righty cleanup hitters (see vlad, manny, magglio, vwells, arod, soriano). laughable. manny is EXACTLY what the mets need to get to the promised land.

  17. bkfitz says:

If the Giants signed Manny, I wonder if Winn or Rowand could be acquired for a cheap price.

  18. Nate W. says:

someone needs to tell Abreu this isnt 2004…

  19. Cactus says:

Since your designated point in time, the Yankees missed the playoffs as many times as the Mets made it (1). They must be doing something right.

  20. Joe D says:

Why would Manny sign with Giants for 3 years $36 million? Are the numbers you cite correct?

  21. Slim says:

No Vlad, no Maggs, no Manny. I thought the point of history was to learn from it, no?

Whelp, here’s to overpaying Bobby “Oh Lord not the wall” Abreu…

  22. Al Kykyoras says:

Manny does not guarantee anything. Please think for a minute. When does one player on a baseball team win championships?

As far as the Yankees spending wisely…hahahahaha!

They spend exorbitantly. BTW - where has that gotten them the past oh 7 or 8 years. It certainly didn’t guarantee them a WS.

The thing I admire about the Yankees is that they “typically” don’t jerk around when pursuing players they absolutely have to have. They put it all out on the table in nice stacks of hundies.

The Mets are a little too methodical and play it entirely too close to the bone most of the time. It got old after the first 100 times.

    • Slim says:

Manny doesn’t guarantee us anything. However he greatly improves our chances of getting above mediocrity…

    • saber-toothed tiger says:

What has it gotten the Yankees? Well let’s see. How about 4 million plus attendance? How about the value of the team which is 1.3 billion dollars? How about a 1.3 billion dollar ball park that will generate insane revenue streams? How about making the playoffs in 7 of the past 8 years you talk about? How about pushing the Mets off the back pages?

Adding Manny to a bad ballclub guarantees nothing. Adding Manny to a pennant contender like the Mets has a profound impact on the NL East.

  23. tm2master1 says:

I wouldn’t mind giving Manny a 5-6 year contract, i don’t care if he falls off after 3 years, hell be so good those first two that we could win a WS - i mean
    1. Reyes
    2. Beltran
    3. Wright
    4. Manny
    5. Delgado
    6. Church
    that is just sick

  24. Bobby Valentine's #1 Fan says:

    Bare with me here:

There are so (Manny) ways he would make us a better ball club. His power in the middle of the lineup would definately take us over the top. Omar has (Manny) different things to worry about the next couple of weeks he needs to guarantee the fan base Lowe or Ollie as well as adding a 5th starter. If Omar makes one big leap of faith we will be in line to win Manny championships, atleast in the near future. The way he plays Manny will have a few more years being one of the best right handed hitters in the game and when he falls off he will still be one of the better players in the league until he retires. He has Manny more homeruns ahead of him and getting to 600+ is a big revenue boost for a club who needs it. I guess what I am trying to say is there are Manny reasons to sign this guy so lets not let him slip away.

I honestly think that Omar is waiting for someone to set the market rate on Manny…once someone makes an offer, that sets the barometer…he doesnt want to be the first one to set it…whatever offer someone comes up with, Omar may have a better one until he reaches a point…

that 2 year deal with 2 year options was EXACTLY what I proposed 3 weeks ago on this website….and Im sure its exactly what Omar has in his bag. The only question will be, what team does Manny wanna play for. At this point, no AL team is showing interest which cuts the amount of years guarenteed because he wont be able to DH…so basically ANY NL team giving him more than 2 years is taking a huge chance…this helps the mets out tremendously…now their competition is 2 west coast teams..neither of them with a great shot at winning the WS…the dodgers are losing penny, maddox and lowe and havent replaced any of them..Omar is playing it smart..and who is to say that Boras isnt coming in to talk about Manny as well, not just Perez and Lowe….The Mets should guarentee 50 Mil and have 4 seperate one year team options…making the deal potentially 150 Mil..but also making it potentially just 50 mil with a 10 mil buyout..
