I honestly think that Omar is waiting for someone to set the market rate on Manny...once someone makes an offer, that sets the barometer...he doesnt want to be the first one to set it...whatever offer someone comes up with, Omar may have a better one until he reaches a point...

that 2 year deal with 2 year options was EXACTLY what I proposed 3 weeks ago on this website....and Im sure its exactly what Omar has in his bag. The only question will be, what team does Manny wanna play for. At this point, no AL team is showing interest which cuts the amount of years guarenteed because he wont be able to DH...so basically ANY NL team giving him more than 2 years is taking a huge chance...this helps the mets out tremendously...now their competition is 2 west coast teams..neither of them with a great shot at winning the WS...the dodgers are losing penny, maddox and lowe and havent replaced any of them..Omar is playing it smart..and who is to say that Boras isnt coming in to talk about Manny as well, not just Perez and Lowe....The Mets should guarentee 50 Mil and have 4 seperate one year team options...making the deal potentially 150 Mil..but also making it potentially just 50 mil with a 10 mil buyout..

Basically the same reason why we gave Pedro the extra year or 2 in his contract..

u overpay because u KNOW u HAVE to have that guy...

the only difference was that Pedro was not known to be a cancer in the clubhouse

Bare with me here:

There are so (Manny) ways he would make us a better ball club. His power in the middle of the lineup would definately take us over the top. Omar has (Manny) different things to worry about the next couple of weeks he needs to guarantee the fan base Lowe or Ollie as well as adding a 5th starter. If Omar makes one big leap of faith we will be in line to win Manny championships, atleast in the near future. The way he plays Manny will have a few more years being one of the best right handed hitters in the game and when he falls off he will still be one of the better players in the league until he retires. He has Manny more homeruns ahead of him and getting to 600+ is a big revenue boost for a club who needs it. I guess what I am trying to say is there are Manny reasons to sign this guy so lets not let him slip away.

I wouldn't mind giving Manny a 5-6 year contract, i don't care if he falls off after 3 years, hell be so good those first two that we could win a WS - i mean
1. Reyes
2. Beltran
3. Wright
4. Manny
5. Delgado
6. Church
that is just sick

What has it gotten the Yankees? Well let’s see. How about 4 million plus attendance? How about the value of the team which is 1.3 billion dollars? How about a 1.3 billion dollar ball park that will generate insane revenue streams? How about making the playoffs in 7 of the past 8 years you talk about? How about pushing the Mets off the back pages?

Adding Manny to a bad ballclub guarantees nothing. Adding Manny to a pennant contender like the Mets has a profound impact on the NL East.

Manny doesn't guarantee us anything. However he greatly improves our chances of getting above mediocrity...

It’s not easy to predict the amount of fall-off in Manny’s offensive production 3 years from now. He has a short, quick, compact swing and hits with power to all fields. Hitters that have a long swing tend to suddenly drop off the face of the earth. If Manny brings post season appearances with one or two WS titles to the Mets franchise in the next two years that the Mets would not have had otherwise then I think we could live with a decline in production 3 years from now. It’s a gamble but less so than investing with Bernard L. Madoff.
