News: Boras and Minaya, Together Again
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 7, 2009 10:33 am

According to the Associated Press, Scott Boras will meet face-to-face with Mets executives today to discuss Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.

However, from what I can gather, Boras and Minaya met yesterday evening, in New York City – whether they are meeting again today, I am not sure.

  1. VCarver says:

Matt,. some of the media reports specifically said they were meeting for lunch today. I think it’s today as Boras was probably tied up with the Teixeira show at Yankee stadium yesterday.

  2. Dirtysanchez says:

And let the games begin..poker face omar..poker face.

  3. CaseStreet says:

Omar, if you sign Manny, Lowe and Perez you can take the rest of the month off.

  4. Deaner says:

    lol @ matt

nice one, dude. like you don’t have a bit more inside resources than vcarver.

  5. Deaner says:

ha! like i need to brown nose a dude who runs mets blog.

  6. tullydew says:

    Sign them both Omar!!

step up and act like a Big market club and get “the guys” you want. Stop acting like your the Royals GM

  7. mistermet says:

Manny Ramirez is also Boras’ client and Minaya needs to be discussing him as well.

  8. murpheeee says:

I wonder who picks up the lunch tab? ;)

  9. nostradamus says:

they best be talking about MANNY too

    • alex242 says:

      nostra,

out 200 post i read from you i swear to god 100% of them have been about manny.. lol.. is becoming a lil stalkarish!!

      • bennyagbayani says:

It’s great though, the thread could be about the plumbing at Citi Field and still there’s Nostra “You know who would love to use those toilets?? Manny! Get it done Omar!”

        • longislandmetsfan says:

i think nostra might actually be Schein from loudmouths….that guy always brings up manny no matter what they’re talking about…they could be talking about the giants eagles game, and he brings up manny…

  10. gears777 says:

Matt I have an idea. I think we need to organize Met fans together to lobby ownership to sign Manny. Your just the man to do it!

  11. VCarver says:

I predict nothing concrete comes out of the meeting … at least not for at least another week.

Fans are on edge here. You can read it in their posts. I just think people should be patient with the process and not expect meetings with Boras to be productive and positive. It will probably be a lot of Boras BSing and Omar using his best diplomacy to diffuse and deflect his BS.

I mean I hope there is not a flood of posts bashing the Wilpons and Omar if that happens.

And please forget Manny. It’s not happening, meeting or no meeting. The Mets have a budget which is pretty generous and there is no room in it for Manny.

  12. gears777 says:

VCarver – Using budget as an excuse on Manny is a cop out. They are moving into a new ballpark with huge revenues. They don’t want him because they are scared of his influence on the team, with guys like Reyes.

Thing is Omar really wants him, I put my trust in Omar.

    • VCarver says:

The Mets like every other team in baseball except the Yankees believe in the Luxury Tax. If you watch their payrolls every year, that is where they draw the line.

It doesn’t matter how much more revenue they get in … the LT threshold sets a cap for them, albeit a flexible one.

Now you can say you don’t believe in the LT … but the Wilpons and 28 other club owners do. I do too.

Also, keep in mind the Wilpons lost a boatload of money with Madoff and that projected revenue increases with the new stadium may not show up for a few years due to the burden of initial construction costs and, most importantly, the downturn in the economy.

Manny’s behavior is probably a factor, but I bet the budget is an equal one.

The only chance I see of Manny coming to NY is if LA drops their offer entirely so he has no place to go and comes in on a 1-year contract of maybe no more than $10 million. Otherwise, forget about it.

      • 16dwight16 says:

I agree with you on that. But I don’t think it’s necessarily just the luxury tax. Teams have constraints from all sorts of angles that we’re not even aware of.

        • VCarver says:

Sure, that makes sense and I agree.

But just look at the spending of teams like the Angels, Boston and the Mets. If they even exceed the luxury tax threshold, it’s only by a little and the next year they turn around and cut payroll in a way so as not to exceed it two years in a row. For the large market teams except the Yankees, it acts as sort of

        • VCarver says:

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

I am well aware of this Mystery Team winning it all.

          Thanks.

    • stickguy says:

to be fair, the dude did quit on a team (dogged it, threatened to sit out games, etc.) just because he wanted something done with his contract. A big no no in my opinion.

COuld you imagine the uproar on this blog if Delgado had pulled a stunt like that?

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Oh yeah, it would be bedlam…..

And I don’t think Delgado got enough credit where credit was clearly due. That whole ‘08 first half, the Shea faithful booed him unmercifully, the sports analysts were saying release him as were most fans. Carlos just went out there every day, ignored it best he could, would only comment he’s working very hard to get back, well, for the most part kept his mouth shut.
And the second half, come August, he even showed a sense of humor when asked how he handled that booing when it was going bad. Delgado answered ‘booing? what booing? were they booing me?’ – then just laughed.

Me…I’m routing for him all the way in ‘09 to pick up where he left off last half of ‘08…

    • VCarver says:

You can trust Omar all you want, but what makes you think he will lobby the Wilpons to go past the budget for an older high-priced bat when the Mets offense was one of the top ranked in the NL last year?

      • 16dwight16 says:

I trust in Omar, but VCarver’s right…there’s more to this just being the Wilpons. Omar has other reasons to pa-ss on Manny. Age, price, etc.

      • gears777 says:

How quickly you forget the Mets have collapsed 2 years in a row! These are not normal times. Wilpons need to step, pay some luxury tax, and go for a championship now!

    • casey s. says:

You think Citi Field is free? That’s a new, huge expense the Mets now have to deal with.

  13. danimal says:

i know this thread should be about the SPs, however I too want Manny to be a Met and it kind of makes sense, with the market for Manny being less than stellar, for Omar to jump in and offer 3/72 mil with a 4th option year of 22 mil with a 2.5 mil buyout…..lets get it done….then forget lowe/perez and sign sheets to be #2 and Pedro to be #5/sixth inning monster

  14. 16dwight16 says:

VCarver – wants everyone to forget that he made an a-s-s of himself. LMAO.

  15. Steviefan84 says:

As the days go by, Omars hair gets grayer and grayer.

  16. stearnsfan12 says:

I think Cerrone owes vcarver an apology for talking to him like he is his biyatch. There’s no need for that. just b/c SNY decided to put you on television for whatever reason, you aren’t above the rest of us. You are a fan, who had a noble idea, and did a nice job with that idea. The fact that you got lucky along the way doesn’t give you the right to talk down to any of us. I hate when people think they are above the “regular” people when they are not. I am sure nothing will come of this, as its his website, and he won’t bother to acknowledge we of the lower social status.

In all seriousness, i have lost some respect for him with this. I know some of you have looked at it in a trivial manner, which is fine. I guess its just one of my pet peeves: people that let small amounts of fame/notoriety go to their heads. Thats not cool at all. If he apologizes, I retract my loss of respect but not until that happens.

    • 16dwight16 says:

Oh come on. VCarver was acting like a know-it-all. Don’t you think Matt has better access to information than VCarver??? Of course he does. Get off your high horse.

    • danimal says:

i thought it was kind of funny….if vcarver felt it was out of line, then ye matt should man up and apologize….it is always a sad day when one of the common folks thinks he is bigger than the people who support him, but I do not think this was a capital offense….btw, sign manny!

    • mikey_FF says:

I think we should set up a PPV event. Cerrone vs. VCarver in a steel cage match.

    • Willie Randolph says:

C’mon stearnsfan12 the economy is bad ,its cold outthere,we have collapse 2 years in a row and we havent sign Manny or Lowe, everybody is taking this thing(blogging) personal and we’re diehard fans but lets enjoy this offseason !

  17. longislandmetsfan says:

matt obviously knows something that vcarver doesn’t, read the original thread…it says that they are supposed to meet for lunch today, HOWEVER, from what matt can gather, they might have met last night….vcarver made a captain obvious comment, and if I was matt, i would have also taken it like, “thanks for pointing that out, I’m not an idiot.”

    • 16dwight16 says:

Exactly, it was a kind reminder that he knows what’s going on. Good stuff.

    • Fcking Heilman says:

Even though Matt knows something the vcarver doesnt, does not give him the right to come off as a complete a-hole. There was definitely a different route he could of taken. He could of easily said:

Vcarver I got this BIOTCH, so pipe down….. or whose name is on the home page, MINE, thanks

Matt please invest and v-neck under shirts, thanks

    • VCarver says:

LI, when I made that post there was no mention of a lunch meeting … and there still isn’t one now.

  18. QnsNative1718 says:

What was even funnier about the Cerrone/Carver “incident” was how VCARVER apologized. Not to jump on the band or make you feel like doo doo, but you got figuratively pimp slapped… Youre testicles are calling, theyre wondering where their owner is.

    • Fcking Heilman says:

that is a good point, i totally missed that.

      Damm Vcarver MAN UP!!!!

    • mikey_FF says:

So what you’re saying is that Cerrone has a firm grip on VCarver’s testicles and when he squeezes VCarver yells mercy?

      Damn.

      • Fcking Heilman says:

mikey that would be a spot on remark, yes

        • mikey_FF says:

          That’s harsh.

VCarver … you gonna take that? Come on man lets set up the steel cage match. I can be your agent. I get 50% of the winner’s purse + 50% of the losers purse. Just sign on the dotted line.

          • VCarver says:

LOL, I find this whole thing amusing. I am not offended by any of the remarks. Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if I don’t agree (and I don’t agree here).

          • mikey_FF says:

I know I know … just thought I’d add some humor to the whole thing. LOL

      • Willie Randolph says:

My sources told me right now that Matt just send an apology e mail to VCarver.

  19. Metskin says:

This is probably why Cerrone doesn’t post more, he makes one objectionable reply and everyone is down his throat. Simmer down, people. Jeez…

  20. longislandmetsfan says:

good stuff……and nostradamus still found a way to mention manny

  21. 16dwight16 says:

I honestly doubt VCarver was offended. Were you? Please…there’s nothing to it. It was just a knock down. Everyone of us has had it happen in life. Matt’s allowed to do it. Sheesh.

    • VCarver says:

      No, I’m not.

I believe Matt was a bit touchy as my post was made with no intention to show up anyone.

But it is his blog. And you all are entitled to your opinions.

I find it a little amusing that this has taken on a life of its own.

    • GSS043 says:

While we’re Cerrone bashing (and don’t get me wrong I like what you’re doing here…) can someone buy that dude a tie!!!!! I mean you’re on TV my man. Slick up a bit.

  22. QnsNative1718 says:

Ehh, like I said, I think we’re all a little antsy for something to happen. It gave me the chuckles and lightened up my day (Sad I know). Anyway, back to Omar and Boras… Wait, wait. What is that noise? Its those silly VCarver testicles again knocking at the window! ok ok ok, Im done. Really. haha.

    • mikey_FF says:

It’s funny how you can say testicles all you want but you can’t say a.ss.ume.

Testicles Testicles Testicles Testicles Testicles Testicles

    • 16dwight16 says:

LMAO…it’s got to end, but I just annoyed half of the office with my laugh at this comment.

    • foul bunt strikeout says:

agreed…this is the most fun I’ve had on this blog in a while.

we’re all antsy from the inactivity (not from chugging maple syrup)

I enjoy the Mets playing the waiting game with Lowe. A little restraint is never a bad thing…unless the Phils swoop in and grab him.

      THAT would be a nightmare.

  23. longislandmetsfan says:

agreed, lets get back to baseball…..what is everyones opinion on what exactly is going to happen in this meeting? (without mentioning manny)

    • lets_go_clones says:

I am well aware there is not another suitor for Derek Lowe.

      Thanks.

      (and then we get him.)

  24. 16dwight16 says:

I think they sweeten the deal for Lowe, slightly maybe 3/40 or 3/42 and say if we can’t talk starting there let’s move onto Ollie.

  25. longislandmetsfan says:

i think you’re right…i think, however, ollie is going to be looking for a pretty decent # of years, which is what really turns me off…I can’t fathom taking a gamble on him for 4 or 5 yrs…Hopefully it will solidify the lowe deal…

  26. Best comments section ion a long time. Good job all, I appreciate the laughs!

  27. nostradamus says:

I am well aware that i mention manny in most of my posts. that is because manny is key for the mets to get to the 2009 promised land.

    thanks.

    • VCarver says:

You are hitting your head against the wall though. For reasons including budget, the Mets will not sign Manny unless his price drops drastically. I mean like
      Burrell territory.

    • foul bunt strikeout says:

      (VCARVER)

Sorry! This is your post and you’re entitled to your opinion!!

      /runs away crying

VCARVER – I am completely joking

  28. VCarver says:

Well guys, I’m outta here for lunch and to go find better support for my “knocking” testicles.

Don’t hold your breath about results from the Boras meeting. I have a feeling nothing positive will come out of it for at least another week … if at all.

  29. longislandmetsfan says:

    just busting chops, nostra

  30. therealsince86 says:

Lowe should be offered 3/40 with an option. 10/15/15 and a 15 million option for the 4th year with a 5 million buyout.
That’s 4/55 or 3/45 after the buyout. Take it or leave it and move on.

  31. lets_go_clones says:

The Mystery Team will sign Lowe and these valiant masked men will win the World Series.

  32. longislandmetsfan says:

yeah, i dont see any of these other “teams” that heyman was talking about making offers, so maybe the will just cut through the bs today….we are at 12, and lowe is thinking 16…meet in the middle at 14, and call it a day…(I must say that i am surprised that at 12 per no other teams have gotten in on it yet) I would imagine the limit for omar is probably 13/14 per….just my opinion…

  33. CaseStreet says:

Chances of signing both Lowe and Perez?

  34. longislandmetsfan says:

i definitely dont see that happening…I was under the impression that their plan was one of lowe/ollie/wolf and a redding/marquis type to compete for #5….it makes sense that they have supposedly made an offer to redding, but it said somewhere that they were close to offering one to wolf, which I’m guessing its to put pressure on boras….
If wolf winds up being the one chosen out of the 1st group, I dont know how much I’ll like that one….I’m thinking lowe has to be the one there..

  35. danimal says:

manny!!!!! lets get this thing done

  36. 7train says:

    Sign VCarver immediately !!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. garfios says:

I’ll prefer Lowe/Sheets, I think Sheets will have a monster year, he is younger with better stuff than Lowe, for the LF now that Bradley just sign with the Cubs for 3/30M, I’ll go for Abreu 2/20 to 22M and maybe try signing the Cuban guy Gomez and Marti, they both ready for the majors, Marti was the best pitcher last WBC and Gomez is 29 years old and in 11 seasons in Cuba he has a 331 career average, he is very fast too.

  38. jamie says:

I can’t believe I missed out on this thread as it was happening.
