Outfield: Mets were interested in Swisher
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 7, 2009 2:53 pm

Tracy Ringolsby of the Denver Post was first to report that the Yankees may look to trade either 1B-OF Nick Swisher or OF Xavier Nady, with the Angels, Braves, Rangers and A’s all showing interest.

According to a recent post from Joel Sherman, for the New York Post, “The Mets and Braves were among the teams that were interested in Nick Swisher before he was traded from the White Sox to the Yankees.”

However, Sherman believes there is a better chance of the Yankees trading Nady because he is eligible for free agency after next season.

The 27–year-old Swisher, who hit just .219 last season, will earn $21 million over the next three seasons.

Nady, 30, hit .305 and 25 home runs in 555 at bats between the Yankees and Pirates last season.

Speaking of outfielders…

The Pirates and two American League teams are most interested in free-agent OF Rocco Baldelli, according to the Post-Gazette.

The A’s may soon look in to Bobby Abreu, and maybe Orlando Cabrera, reports Susan Slusser in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Henry Schulman, also in the Chronicle, believes the Giants and Manny Ramirez have discussed a contract.

  1. Mr North Jersey says:

Manny is still available people the longer he remains unsigned the longer ownership has to change their mind.

    • oleosmirf says:

that is very true although Nady at the right price would be a great fit here

      • nostradamus says:

but nady would not be a difference maker, wouldnt improve the whole lineup, doesnt play LF and would cost prospects. manny IS the answer on ALL levels.

        • alex242 says:

lol, nostra, for one second u fooled me.. lol, i read almost the entire post and i was ready to say wow, the first post w/o any manny in there!! boy i should’ve known better

        • therealsince86 says:

Doesn’t play LF? Come on. That’s what he played for the Yankee’s. And Manny, while much better will cost 20 million more right now and 2 draft picks.
Nothing is cut and dry nostra.

          • nostradamus says:

win now = sign manny instead of acquiring the OF flavor/schlub of the day (dunn, abreau, bradley, nady would make NO DIFFERENCE in the standings….might as well stick with tatis/murph….second place finish at best either way)

          • therealsince86 says:

Man it’s like arguing with a guy 5 years younger than Alex.
Cant you understand that right now based on Mets ownership that if we sign Manny we won’t get any decent SP? That makes any difference Manny makes less or about even because we would be starting crap 2-3 times a week.

          • alex242 says:

            lol, wow trs,

thanks for putting me out there!!

          • CaseStreet says:

damn, now alex’s testicles are knocking on the window

  2. therealsince86 says:

Mets were once interested in Gaylord Perry and Dave Stewart. Ok moving on.

We are not getting Nady and should not want Swisher.

Baldelii and Abreu, either would be ok to add to our OF mix IF we are not getting Manny.

  3. Mr North Jersey says:

I will be the 1st to welcome Nady back to Queens but Mets signing Ramirez has more chance of happening than them trading for Nady.

    • Xavier22 says:

Agreed, Who the Mets are willing to trade for Nady the Yankees don’t want. And who the Yankees want for Nady the Mets wouldn’t trade.

  4. therealsince86 says:

Nady is coming off of what will most likely be a career year his trade value has never been and most likely will never be this high again. Stay away from these type players. Seriously, the Yankee’s would want what? Niese?

    • Gina says:

Not to mention look at his splits between the pirate/yankees. He regressed back to his career numbers rapidly once he got to the Bronx.

  5. Gina says:

Nady would depend on the asking price IMO. He’s definitely not worth a package similar to what they gave up.

  6. NYCESQ says:

I think I will lose my lunch if Nady talk begins again. Not directed at you Oleo, but the newspapers in general.

  7. nostradamus says:

it would be a disgraqce if the giants pulled off acquiring manny, when the mets could/would not. the mets have a perfect storm for signing manny.

  8. alex242 says:

i would find very hard that the yankees would trade nady to the second biggest rival.. very hard to believe..

  9. Mr North Jersey says:

If Mets Yanks did trade their is no way Mets are trading their top Lefty prospect.

I would think a 3 way trade would be required

    • therealsince86 says:

It would have to be. Who else on the Mets would the Yankee’s want? Murphy? Kunz?

  10. therealsince86 says:

Nostra, why do you not understand that IF the Mets do indeed have a budget that they can’t afford Manny and 2 SP?

    • alex242 says:

      TRS:

if the mets have the budget wouldn’t they SIGN manny AND 2sp??

      • therealsince86 says:

Budget refers to having to actually count how much money they spend and having a limit. Not just throwing out money without regard to how much it cost.

      • stickguy says:

entirely possible they still wouldn’t sign him, since it probably isn’t just about the money.

Now, if he would take a 1 year deal to try again next year, that might overcome the other objections.

If you are going to have manny, best to have him on a contract push.

    • nostradamus says:

manny is an INVESTMENT with HIGH return for the cheapons

      • ravi3 says:

Yea, you can’t really call a team that spends upwards of $140Mill on payroll (while losing $300-$500 on a scam), with a brand new stadium and its own tv channel cheap.

  11. Mr North Jersey says:

Here we go again the B-word.

  12. Fcking Heilman says:

    Please bring Nady back

  13. bucknersankles says:

    A 219 LEFTY HITTER ?………… YEAH, THAT’S THE TICKET.

  14. therealsince86 says:

IF the Mets ownership wanted Manny the best thing to do to get him would be to trade Delgado to the Angles and then sign Manny using the Delgado money. Leting Murphy start at 1B. That’s a move that would make sense.
You give Manny 12 million this season with a signing bonus then use the Wagner money next year to bump it up to 22 million a year for 2 more years.
Then you still have the money to go out and get your 2 SP.

    • nrmax88 says:

LOL @ signing Manny for 12 mil. You better bump it up near 40 mil for the next 2 years to get Boras on that one.

    • Tidewater says:

Why do people keep offering Delgado to the Angels? Is there any indication the Angels want Delgado?

      • daw says:

Because the Angels just lost a middle of the order first baseman (maybe you’ve heard of him), and selling high on Delgado might be seen as a solid upgrade over Kendry Morales.

  15. Mr North Jersey says:

    therealsince86 -

I have no idea what combo of players it would require with what other teams getting involved for Mets to acquire Nady but I think the memories of what happened last time Mets traded top Lefty prospect would maybe sway them to hold on to Niese.

    • therealsince86 says:

      You would hope.

    • jaydh says:

are you seriously comparing the potential of kazmir with niese? Kazmir was a top 10 prospect in the league. its really not close and not accurate. While I am not jumping to give niese away, he is hardly untouchable.

      • Mr North Jersey says:

        jay
I agree with you 100% about Niese.

Having said that all i was implying is that they would be sure if they traded Niese it would be a deal that all would agree is a “Must-do” type of deal.

      • Tidewater says:

Yes, the only similarities between Neise and Kazmir is they both are lefthanded. There is no other comparison.

Neise would be much more expendable, however, if there was any depth at all to the Mets pitching. As it stands now, they don’t even have a rotation. If they did, I’d include Neise in the right package.

        Kazmir. sigh

  16. NYCESQ says:

The Yankees won’t just give him away. I’d rather try and trade for a difference maker, if we had to make a trade.

  17. jaydh says:

You got to love how the Yankees acquired Swisher and now want to trade him all before the season starts.

Personally, I would NEVER deal with the yanks since its usually a ripoff or nothing.

    • longislandmetsfan says:

the yanks got swisher with the original thought process that teixera wouldnt happen….now that they got teixera, swisher is expendable

    • Tidewater says:

It’s not that uncommon. Mets did it with Jim Kern to get George Foster.

(It’s certainly happened a lot more recently than that, i just have always loved that Jim Kern piece of trivia.)

  18. oleosmirf says:

Nady could platoon with Murphy in LF and Church in RF with Tatis.

I wouldnt give up one of our better prospects though…

  19. tullydew says:

I would trade Niese strsaight up for Nady

  20. tullydew says:

    straight

  21. Mr North Jersey says:

    For the record,

As much as the excitement and idea of watching a player of Manny’s caliber crush balls all over Citi Fields.

I do not believe he is a guarantee entry into postseason just that our chances are that much better.

I say this only because it kills me when people throw around words like guarantee W.S. when trying to rationalize signing a player.

    • stickguy says:

there are no guarantees in life, or even baseball. The Dodgers didn’t make the WS.

The Yankees have the “best” player in MLB, and the highest payroll, and finished 3rd in their own division.

Or the Cards have the best player, and finished way out of the race.

If you got a budget, it rarely works to make 1 guy take up a disproportionate % of the payroll (since you have to cut corners elsewhere).

    • nostradamus says:

“As much as the excitement and idea of watching a player of Manny’s caliber crush balls all over Citi Fields.”

      wouldnt want THAT huh?

  22. stickguy says:

It gives me a headache to think that Manny is likely going to be the last name FA signed.

Having to scroll through 200 MANNY posts per day (and that is from only 2-3 posters) just gets tiring.

I was really hoping the get younger movement was going to take root, but I guess not (since the 2 metsblog obsessions seem to be 35-37 YO Lowe and Manny)

  23. anybody hear any news on omar and boras’ meeting?? quick question why would we even want swisher?? except as a utility player

  24. Mr North Jersey says:

    LOL Stick,

you mean you don’t like Manny talk?

    -really???

  25. i’d like to be 3 sheets to tha wind lol

  26. oleosmirf says:

hopefully we dont have Awful Ollie again. The guy has pitched some of the worst games I have ever seen in my life

    • alex242 says:

lol, true, that san francisco game was just HORRENDOUS!!

      • oleosmirf says:

the worst was the game against the Cubs. 5-1 lead in like the 3rd inning and he kept missing the strike zone and walking guys and just choked

I was at the game and everyone was screaming just throw a f@#%ing strike!!!

        • alex242 says:

lol, man i tell ya, sometimes for a game u have to be lucky, i went to game 161 when santana pitch that brilliant game.. lol.. i imagine u was madddddd…

        • Kherubconamor says:

Ollie was awesome for us more often than not. He manhandled the yankays, and for that alone I love him…but he took it to the Phillies, the Marlins, and the Braves….Ollie is my dog for life….Love OLLIE…..

See…some people love to complain, and find fault with roses because they have thorns…while others rejoice that thorn bushes yield beauty in the form of a rose….

    • brapp says:

Who would you rather have? Lowe/redding or niese/ or perez/garland?

  27. Chris Alvino says:

I wonder how much Omar has left to spend. If Lowe does not sign, I wonder if Omar can make a deal for another starter than does not make a ton of money. I would probably rather that than have Ollie for big bucks.

Also, I would be in on Garland and Sheets in a heartbeat. You can probably get both for the combined 16 mill that Lowe wants.

By the way, I know he lefty, but Wolf is always hurt. Remember him on the Phils. I would be very cautious of him. As far as consistency goes, I might want Redding over him.

  28. Bruce Boisclair says:

Do we really want Manny? I am not sure. If Omar pulled that one off, he really duped us all (all of the “He can’t convince ownership business.”)

Nady would be a good fit, but I kind of like the approach we are taking with the Tatis/Murphy platoon- this is easing Murphy in to a full-time role (possibly at 1B). However, if we did get Nady, we could possibly deal Church, which could help in getting a starter, 2B, or even catcher.

Lots of options. I see us signing Lowe, either Redding or Wolf, and standing pat. I think we will be players around the trade deadline– and that could involve a major OFer. (Here’s a name to throw out– Carlos Lee. If the Astros tank, he probably could be had in a salary dump type trade.)

    • Bruce Boisclair says:

Sorry — I meant all of the “He can’t convince ownership” business (business outside of the quotes.) I think Omar has been very keen to avoid the perception of the Mets being “in on” some of these guys to avoid driving up the price.

    • F.Calisi says:

      Yeah Lee and Oswalt

  29. 7train says:

Yo Cerrone and VCarver are gonna fight after school!!!!

  30. nostradamus says:

wilpon’s “manny costs too much” = vlad’s “bad back”

    excuses, excuses, collapse, collapse

    • Aquadealer says:

Yes because the lines out the door for people that want to give manny 4 years 100 million.

      • oleosmirf says:

i am probably one of the biggest supporters of signing Manny but i certainly wouldnt gaurantee him any more than 2 years…

    • alex242 says:

      nostra:

your my boy but i think u need a timeout from this manny thing u got going on.. for the sake of all of us!! lol

  31. oleosmirf says:

we want Manny b/c when the game is on the line, Manny will deliver. Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado or anyone else has not…

    • alex242 says:

Imagine we get him and he ends up hitting like delagdo in 07!!

      lol..

      • oleosmirf says:

that would be like Teixiera going to the Yankees and putting up crap numbers…

        • alex242 says:

          Uh,

no it wouldn’t coz we can care les-s as a mets fans what any yankee do.. or i least i like to think that way for all of us..

        • alex242 says:

          Uh,

no it wouldn’t coz we can care les-s as a mets fans what any yankee do.. or i least i like to think that way for all of us..

  32. Mr North Jersey says:

    Wow!!! Nostradamus,

Your “wilpon’s “manny costs too much” = vlad’s “bad back” comment is like deja vu to me I swear I said something similar to Vcarver a while back.

  33. Mr North Jersey says:

    Aqua

I think Matt did a survey about how many fans wanted Manny if it required a large multi-year contract or something to thst effect and while majority were against it wasn’t exactly 70/30 more like 56/44.

    • Aquadealer says:

I saw the poll your point being?

      • Mr North Jersey says:

        Point being,

your comment “Yes because the lines out the door for people that want to give manny 4 years 100 million.” I interpreted as suggesting a select few want Manny when its really almost half.

  34. longislandmetsfan says:

i dont recall anyone in the mets organization saying that manny cost too much…i only recall hearing that omar wanted him, but ownership didnt want him, and nobody thought that omar was going to be able to convinve them….

    • alex242 says:

the mets don’t wanna sign him.. that’s all.. and like i told nostra the reason is not the money, is the way he might act AFTER he gets the money..

      • longislandmetsfan says:

i agree with you alex, I was disagreeing with nostra’s comment that the wilpons said he cost too much

      • Willie Randolph says:

Manny is a CANCER ! forget about him, Reyes will hit 30 triples with that outfield (specially RCF). Do you saw that dimensions ?

      • MudvilleNine says:

The Wilpons have been friends with the Red Sox owners for years. Thats why they’re going to be the first opponents to open Citifield. They’ve been talking back and forth for years and I’m sure the Manny woes have been a topic of discus sion many a time. I think those talks are what soured the Wilpons on Manny. They dont want to deal with what the Red Sox owners have said they’ve been going thru. Think of it this way. Your friend has been complaining about his beautiful girlfriend for a couple of years. He finally gets rid of her and after a year you have a chance of making this gorgeous girl your girlfriend. But now you remember about all the troubles your friend said he had with her. To you, is she really worth it? Now there are some guys out there that would say they’d sleep with her then dump her, but what if you had to commit to her for 4 years before that can possibly happen? Would you still do it despite all the headaches, just for the chance of maybe sleeping with her? Thus the Wilpon’s thinking of no. *apologies to any ladies out there.

  35. i still want to know what happened to omars “total autonomy” !

  36. 7train says:

Guys lets take it easy . . .VCarver has had a rough day and I feel for the little guy.

You realize their was talk of his testicles dissappearing after the incident.

There’s talk that Cerrone will beat the snot out of this kid. (kidding))

VCarver walked right into Cerrone’s trap.

Cerrone was in makeup for SNY Hot Stove when he saw VCarvers comment and boy did he pounce.

The makeup artist heard him say something out of the blue while looking at his laptop,”Boy you stepped to the wrong Blogmaster”

I don;t ever wanna cross Cerrone

“fear is stronger than respect” – Matt Cerrone

    • Willie Randolph says:

Hey i havent read a post from VCarver since this morning, anybody know something about him ?

      • 7train says:

Word is Cerrone wiped him out . . .whether it be just from Metsblog or the planet, No one will know . . .

  37. Mr North Jersey says:

I agree with Alex as far as reason why Mets don’t want Manny.

    They are afraid

    • bucknersankles says:

I THINK THE WILPON’S ARE MORE AFRAID OF MANNY (B/C OF BOSTON FIASCO ) THAN IT JUST BEING THAT THEY DON’T WANT HIM, THAT SAID, THEY ARE MAKING A MISTAKE TO BELIEVE THAT WITH THE LIKES OF DELGADO, BELTRAN,SANTANA, WRIGHT,REYES, K-ROD AND PUTZ ( MAN, THAT SOUNDS WICKED ON PAPER ) THAT SOMEHOW MANNY IS NOT GOING TO MESH.
NOT ONLY IS MANNY GOING TO MESH WITH THIS CREW BUT HE IS GOING TO MASH, SIMPLY PUT, WE WILL HAVE ONE OF THE MOST DEVASTATING LINEUPS IN BASEBALL HISTORY.
MANRAM WILL KNOW FROM THE OUTSET WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH AND HE IS GOING TO GET ON BOARD TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARD THAT END.

  38. tullydew says:

Freddie Coupons doesnt want to buck up for Manny???

    SHOCKER!!

    • Sylar says:

A dumb Mets fan using the word “Coupons” as a derogatory term even though it has absolutely no basis???

      SHOCKER!!

      • tullydew says:

        No basis??

We just offered Tim redding a contract??
We signed Fernando tatis to save money?
when Burrell, Abreu, Dunn and MANNY are still available?
When do you see our neighbor in the Bronx sign a FA like Redding or Tatis?

      • tullydew says:

Tatis is the spanish word for “cheap”

  39. oleosmirf says:

if Manny signs elsewhere for 2 years or less, then I don’t want to here the Mets say anything about putting the team in the best position to win.

Name one player the Mets can put in LF that gives the Mets a better chance to win the 2009 WS than Manny Ramirez.

  40. bucknersankles says:

    VINCE COLMAN ?

  41. 7train says:

I say we play Matt Cerrone in LF.

He said he use to pitch, so he has to have some athletic skills.

According to Bobby V and Steve Phillips if he can hit in a batting cage . . . . SIGN HIM!

  42. longislandmetsfan says:

    moises alou?

  43. longislandmetsfan says:

    angel pagan?

  44. Metsgoon2117 says:

Does anyone think the Yankees are shopping Swisher and Nady so they can free up a spot and get Manny themselves?

    • Nate W. says:

Makes sense on some levels. They really need a strong CFer more though.

If the Yankees do sign Manny they should be allowed to play 4 OFers instead of having a DH. Manny, Damon, Matsui and Nady can almost cover as much ground as three regular OFers…

We already know Manny can relay Damon’s throws from CF.

    • Aquadealer says:

      God I hope so

  45. oleosmirf says:

Nick “deer in the headlights” Evans

  46. Nate W. says:

With Abreu and Dunn on the FA market Schwisher and his contract will be very tough to move. That should bring down the asking price for Nady because they need to move an OF.

  47. longislandmetsfan says:

all kidding aside, theres been no word yet on this meeting with boras??
i thought i had heard it was like a lunch time type of deal?? just curious

  48. bucknersankles says:

IT’S FRUSTRATING TO HAVE THESE GUY’S FLOATING AROUND ( SHEETS, MANNY ETC ) AND WE’RE JUST HUGGING THE WALL AT THE PROVERBIAL PARTY.
THE METS HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO CRUSH THE JUGGULAR OF THE NL EAST AND WE’RE STANDING AROUND WITH OUR FINGER’S UP THE NOSE.

  49. Metsgoon2117 says:

    Yankees better not sign Manny!!

    • oleosmirf says:

the Yankees pride themselves on c-l-a-s-s and uptightness. Manny is the exact opposite of what the Yankees believe in…

  50. longislandmetsfan says:

    i dont see that happening…

  51. sabermetrician says:

Yeah, VCarver got slapped down by Matt, but Matt is just defending what he reports. Everyone is a bit defensive about their work.

  52. sabermetrician says:

I’ve been looking at trade possibilities for the Mets in LF and I came up with:

    Rowand – bad contract
Dye – Available for the right pieces, I’m not sure we’d give up those pieces
    Swisher – I don’t see a match
    Nady – I don’t see a match

    Any other ideas?

  53. sabermetrician says:

Alright…all very interesting although I really hope we don’t end up with Slammin’ Sammy. (or Moises or Billy, lol)

  54. sabermetrician says:

Kherubconamor, do you think that there’s chance they’d still go after Manny?

    • Kherubconamor says:

I don’t know why my reply isn’t going through….SO ANNOYING!!

      I’ll chop it…

      • Kherubconamor says:

Honestly? Yes, yes I do. I mean, the optimism is entirely guarded, and maybe it’s just the unrelenting love I have in my heart for the Mets playing tricks on my mind, but it just makes too much sense for them not to sign him. If the Mets don’t sign Manny the game is fixed and/or it’s time for the Wilpons to move on.

        • Kherubconamor says:

All the cards are lined up for a NY MET Manny acquisition. He puts us over the edge on the field, he more than pays for himself off the field,he might even be more popular than jeter in Ny, the Mets would get a glut of positive global exposure…

          • Kherubconamor says:

….I mean, you’d have to be a total dunce ownership group if you’re in the Mets position right now, and don’t jump on this guy.

          • Kherubconamor says:

It might be my unimpeachable, wide-eyed optimism, but I think it makes too much sense for them to totally pa$$ on him. I think they’re playing it close to the vest like the yankays did with Teixeira, and then at the last moment come away with the piece we all know we need….even Fred and Jeff….
            Reply

          • Aquadealer says:

Thats something thats probably never been in the same paragraph Manny Ramirez and positive global exposure. lol

          • Kherubconamor says:

Yeah, cause the Red Sox were a real power house before Manny came to town…pfffttt…

  55. nostradamus says:

    well said kherub bro

    • Aquadealer says:

Come on Nostradumas come clean your really Manny and Kherub is Scott Boras right?

      • Kherubconamor says:

we’ll come clean if you come clean….Hank….

        • Aquadealer says:

The contract that Manny Ramirez is seeking may be too expensive for the Dodgers or Giants, ESPN.com reported on Tuesday night.
The Web site, citing an unnamed source, said Scott Boras, Ramirez’s agent, is still seeking a four-to-five year contract in the $25 million a year range.

Rumors that the 36-year-old Ramirez, might go to the Giants are “unfounded” and “baloney.”

Maybe you and Nostradumas can chip in 50 mill each

          • Kherubconamor says:

            accept a chit?

lol, cause that’s all I can offer right now…is chit…

lol, look up the meaning of the word…it’s a promissory note…an IOU…I just love that word…I have no money, but I can give a chit….would you like my chit? Put my chit in your pocket, and save it for later.

I dont mind giving Murphy a shot at left field as long as they go out and do something bold if something unforseen happens, ie injury to church/murphy …

Ok, so now for a quicker post #2… While I as much as anyone would love Manny, why not make a lowball offer to Adam Dunn, who is similar to Swisher yet better in their areas of strength? Couldn’t hurt.. I would avoid Andruw Jones like the bubonic plague, however, he is just as bad in different ways as Castillo. Outside of Dunn, our other non-Manny LF options are underwhelming at best.
