Outfield: Mets interested in Cory Sullivan
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 8, 2009 11:58 am

Troy Renck of the Denver Post believes the Mets are interested in free-agent OF Cory Sullivan, who was non-tendered in December.

The 29–year-old Sullivan, who bats left-handed, is a career .279 hitter, with a .330 OBP and just eight HR in 927 at bats for the Rockies, during which he hit .269 away from Colorado.

I’m thinking Sullivan must be viewed as a potential replacement for Endy Chavez, who was traded to Seattle, since he is most known for his defense.  However, isn’t that what Jeremy Reed is for?  My guess is the Mets once expressed interest in Sullivan, knowing they might trade Chavez, but before they acquired Reed.

The Padres, Rangers, Marlins and D’Backs have all been linked in rumor to Sullivan during the off-season.

Speaking of back-up outfielders…

The Red Sox are close to signing free-agent OF Rocco Baldelli to a one-year deal, according to the Boston Globe.

I have been sent a lot of e-mail from readers who wanted to Baldelli.  I don’t get the love affair.  He’s a good hitter, sure, but he’s getting older, he is struggling with a unique ‘energy-depleting health disorder,’ he was in search of a guaranteed contract, and the Mets already have Fernando Tatis, Daniel Murphy, Ryan Church, Angel Pagan and Reed, and are also apparently interested in Sullivan.  So, it’s nothing against Baldelli, it’s just, I am not sure where he fits in.

Angel Pagan! I’m most excited to see whether he can play like he did pre-shoulder injury. Gritty :)

  2. Xavier22 says:

Unless they’re looking to trade Jeremy Reed as part of package for someone else, I don’t get this supposed deal.

  3. casey s. says:

this is like going to a french restaurant hungry as heck and getting a one inch steak with a string bean laid across it.

  4. x-nady says:

This is Redic. What about angel Pagan? He is a fine endy replacement. And if he is going to be a starter, and he is a lefty, just sign Dunn already!

If we do sign an everyday Left fielder, then Murpy & Tatis are pushed to the bench, which would instantly make our benches one of the best in the NL.

    I don’t get it.

  5. Wanny Backstra says:

I have no problem upgrading on Reed. Reed can’t hit and is useless as a bat on the bench.

  6. alex242 says:

    GOOD BYE MANNY RAMIREZ!!!

We’ve got the answer to all our prayers.. CORY “i couldn’t hit 10 home runs while playing in coors field” SULLIVAN!!

    • mikey_FF says:

Yeah, exactly. What a joke. Manny is not even an option … lets get Cory Sullivan.

    • metsfrenzy says:

I agree – Mets are always trying to get a gold level player from the $1 store!!! Omar/Fred/Jeff-please stop screwing around and get Manny-

You want to big team players-stop acting like a bunch of cheapos and get the players needed to compete. If not-sell the team otherwise your palatial ballpark will be empty next year…

  7. djbutler says:

Wait and see, Mets fans are going to love Jeremy Thomas Reed.

    • alex242 says:

thanks DJ i was starting to worry..

    • Nate W. says:

you mean Buffalo Bison fans? ;)

Reed and Pagan will most likely spend most of 2009 in AAA as there really shouldnt be roster space for them. At least not both.

  8. Philnym31 says:

Sullivan is not under contract through 2009, he’s a free agent.

  9. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

I think they should trade Angel Pagan and sign Cora and Kapler to round out the bench. We dont need 2 Jeremy Reeds and thats what Pagan is. If we arent getting a big bat we need a righty with some pop to platoon with Church if he struggles against lefties.

    Tatis/Murphy
    Castro/Schneider
    Kapler/Church
    Reed
    Cora

That is solid, if Church hits lefties well, great, if not we can go with platoons at 3 spots and always have a strong bench

  10. alex242 says:

we also need a big bat.. darryl ward might help us..

  11. enterkrod says:

this freaking team…not only will they NOT get lowe…they wont even express interest in manny..at least not publicly

  12. Philnym31 says:

Gordon Edes of Yahoo says the Braves have “zeroed in on Lowe” and have significant interest.

  13. bkfitz says:

Waste of time since Sullivan is a lefty.

  14. therealsince86 says:

Unless they are trading Murphy or Church I just don’t see needing Sullivan on the bench.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

trs86, for the sake of discussion let’s as-sume you’re hypothesis proves true. Would they be trading one (or both?) of those guys for a RH OF? Or an under contract SP? Or something else? Curious to hear your thoughts.

      • therealsince86 says:

It depends. I don’t know what their value is outside of the Mets. Do they think Murphy was a flash in the pan or that Church will not be recovered.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

…sorry, that should read ‘your hypothesis’

  15. alex242 says:

watch omar fail at everybody then sign redding, cordero, and wolff and say, oh well, “u know, um.. we try.. but.. u know.. he wanted more momey and.. u know we weren’t gonna go in the direction u know.. “

    • therealsince86 says:

Right because he has done that so often in the past.

      • alex242 says:

Well, didn’t he failed to the address our most needed needs last year? even at the deadline he failed..

        • therealsince86 says:

Our most “needed” need was a #1 SP last off season and he got that. I am not saying he is a genius. I am saying he is an average GM that deserves blame and praise.

  16. enterkrod says:

its stsarting to bother me…this is getting ridiculous

    • fongulalou says:

Well since it really does appear there will be
no Manny or even Abreu, The more Outfield
bodies Omar brings in, the mo’ better.
Maybe(although unlikely) we get lucky with
      one of these guys.

      • enterkrod says:

i hope you are right..but the fact that again..we acquired the two big relief pitchers in krod and putz about a month and a half ago..and havent done ANTHING since…and could possibly miss out on lowe..we wont even look at manny…come on

      • alex242 says:

nice fongalou, he bring 8 reclamation bums, then 1 gets lucky and have a decent season and we then pray omar for being such a smart GM .. gimme a fu****g break!!!

        • fongulalou says:

Calm down girlfriend!- Didn’t say I wanted this. I want (and have for years) Manny,
          But ain’t gonna happen.Didn’t think I’d say
this acouple months ago but would settle
for Abreu. And I’ve been no big fan of Omar,
Having gotten myself banned here already
for being critical(although never vulgar) of
him for among other things his insane signing of Luis(aches&pains)Castillo AND
signing then resigning of Alou(hence the screen name).

    • Knuckler says:

Don’t worry . We are interested in Sullivan so can can come in late defensively for Manny.

  17. CaseStreet says:

“My guess is the Mets once expressed interest in Sullivan, knowing they might trade Chavez, but before they acquired Reed”

    Take it easy people.

  18. mrmustseetv says:

    A few points:

    1) If the Wilpons think that this team cannot use Manny Ramirez, they are completely off their rocker. I’m tired of the Wilpons worrying about the team’s image. How about worrying about the team’s image being that of a bunch of choke-artists.

No one cares if the Mets are choir boys. They want winners and Manny for all his moody behavior make the Mets contenders.

Just give him 2 years with a vesting 3rd year already!

    2) Truthfully, Lowe would be nice, but I’m okay with bringing back Perez as well, so long as the Mets get one of the two I’ll be happy.

    3) Don’t bring back Pedro. Been there, done that. Love the guy, but we knew it was time to part ways with Piazza a few years ago and it was the right time to do so because he never amounted to much after that. Same thing with Pedro. Move on.

    4) I’m not sold on the Tatis/Murphy platoon. This team has too many holes to brush off that platoon as a “we’ll be happy with whatever we get out of it” approach. We don’t know how Church will hold up in right. Castillo is still a joke at short. Catcher is an automatic out, and we’re not sure which Delgado will show up in 2009.

If the Mets don’t get Manny, I say they go after Bobby Abreu. I know Matt Cerrone has no love for him, but he’s a solid player. He’s not a franchise player, but a solid player and is more consistent and a given factor than what you may get out of Tatis/Murphy. Offer him the same type of deal Burrell got if the Mets won’t go after Manny.

This would then allow Tatis and Murphy to go to the bench, making that much stronger.

    • sabermetrician says:

Until Manny is signed there’s going to be a small part of me that hopes Omar is secretly going after him.

      • alex242 says:

Maybe that’s why we are not really signing ppl to big contracts and are saving money for him..

  19. click says:

Baldelli is 27. Whether or not he’s a good fit, to say he’s getting older is meaningless. I mean, we’re all getting older, aren’t we?

    • alex242 says:

compare to what we had in left field the last 2 years 27 is baby years.. (alou)

    • sabermetrician says:

Yeah, that was a strange comment by Matt. Maybe he’s getting at the fact that he ‘plays’ older. I’m not sure.

  20. sabermetrician says:

It’ll be alright krod…always darkest before dawn. Just think how excited we get when a tidbit of good news comes out. There’s something on its way.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

      Hopefully that something isn’t:

      Ramirez signs with Dodgers;
      Lowe signs with Braves;
      Perez signs with Rangers;
      Abreu signs with (not Mets);
      Dunn signs with (not Mets);
Redding and Wolf and Sullivan sign with Mets.

      • alex242 says:

        LMAO!!!

nice.. to top that, in the WBC reyes AND wright are out for the season with severe injuries!!!

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Yikes! If that all happens, Murphy gets baptised by fire at 3B, Alex Cora/David Eckstein/other signs to play fulltime at SS, and I prepare to watch my Mets battle it out for 4th place with the Nats.

  21. therealsince86 says:

I wonder what it would take to get Roberts from the O’s. That would be a huge addition to 2B.
Maybe you would be able to send Castillo in the deal if you included half of his salary.

  22. alex242 says:

so the real it’d be the same as signing hudson and keeping castillo don’t you agree?? althoug i like roberts better money wise wouldn’t make sense..

    • therealsince86 says:

Sure it does. If the O’s would take Castillo for 3 million a year. But even if they did not, Roberts makes 8 million and only has 1 year left. Not 4/40.

      • mikey_FF says:

Did you just say to trade Castillo for Roberts? And you thought my trade idea’s were stupid.

        =)

        • therealsince86 says:

No in a package for Roberts. Most likely would not happen but the O’s would need a leadoff hitter and a 2B. Castillo at 3/9 would be cheap enough.
I would not do Fmart straight up for 1 year of Roberts but if that deal moved Castillo I would be more likely to deal a top prospect.

          • mikey_FF says:

I am well aware that you meant a package.

            Thanks.

(Don’t think they’d want Castillo though)

  23. swedgin says:

Rocco Baldelli has played in 92, 35, and 28 games in the last 3 complete seasons. Hamstrings, all sorts of physical ailments…big guy, lots of power, can’t keep on the field at 25, 26, and 27 years of age.

  24. keep it posi says:

The interest in Sullivan as a defensive outfielder doesn’t make sense to me. Speaking of outfieldiers, I believe that not signing Ibanez was the biggest off-season mistake of ‘09. I just have a gut feeling that he will be a Mets killer with the Phillies.
