regarding that "stunt", i am certain there are 2 sides to that story. baggage or not, LA loves him. and manny is EXACTLY what the mets need RIGHT NOW to WIN NOW!

I could care less if Lowe signed with the Braves as long as he doesn't sign with the Phils. Get a good deal on Ollie and Redding then sign Manny.

there's some stuff about it on ajc.com. if you are ever looking for other perspectives on a story you definitely have to go outside this blog. It's a bit limited.

How are you giving Manny 65 mil for 3 years and paying him 13 mil the first year? You're backloading the contract? I can't imagine he'd be amenable to that.

And to be honest, I don't think that this is all about budget. I really think that his price tag plus his baggage and the stunt he pulled to get out of Boston makde the Wilpons not want to go down that road. If Manny was a model citizen I think Omar would have convinced them. We know that Omar loves Manny.

Speaking of 1st round picks, the Phillies had an impressive run of drafting productive (or better major leaguers) even if they didn't retain all of them (Drew, Eaton).

2002 Cole Hamels LHP San Diego, CA 17
2001 Gavin Floyd RHP Mt. St. Joseph HS, Baltim 4
2000 Chase Utley 2B Long Beach, CA 15
1999 Brett Myers RHP Jacksonville, FL 12
1998 Pat Burrell 1B U. of Miami (FL) 1
1997 *J.D. Drew OF Florida State U 2
1996 Adam Eaton RHP Snohomish, WA 11

Eaton's a mess now but he's still playing 12 years later, which most draft picks can't claim. But the rest of those guys have sure had or are having nice careers.

Really only 3 of their first round picks were contributors on their team last year (Upton, Longoria, Price) and Price did not come until later on.

I guess you have to count Baldelli too.

Another first round pick (Delmon Young) was turned into Matt Garza. But that would be like counting Church and Schneider for the Mets because they were obtained for Milledge.

I don't think their number is unusually high -- Arizona may have had more (Drew, Upton, Scherzer and Jackson off the top of my head) -- but they certainly were important players.

This whole situation is laughable! In less than twenty-four hours time, we went from practically having Lowe to maybe losing him to our original arch enemy. Where is everyone getting their stories from? Ya know, I'm starting to care less if we get Lowe or not, because I'd like a guy who actually WANTS to be a Met, but at the same time I'm really starting to dislike Boras. Omar, please go sign Sheets and Wolf to make Boras and Natasha quite acting like they've got us by the short and curlies.
