Video: Phone Call with Tim of MLBTR
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 8, 2009 2:39 pm

The following video, courtesy of SNY.tv, is of my recent phone conversation with Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors, during which we talk about the market for Derek Lowe, Orlando Hudson, and the large group of aging veterans:

Note: This conversation took place before today’s news that the Braves will be meeting face to face with Lowe.

Searching for a way to palliate the Manny situation, I turned to the I Ching….well, the online version anyway, but tossed the coins myself…I asked if Manny would sign with the Mets, and that was the fortune told….add the w’s…

          • alex242 says:

not if we’re suppose to talk about pitchers and he chimes and say:

            SIGN MANNY!!

            lol..

          • nostradamus says:

bro, i’m here. simply put, manny is MORE key to the mets’ “win now” than lowe. wolf, redding, and garland….even opez will due. plus mets save $ by absorbing slappy and scheider bats…plus manny is an investment with a high return

          • alex242 says:

            NOSTRA:

lol, where you been bro.. i was starting to worry u were gone from mets blog for so many manny posts..

  2. boozermetsfan says:

Let Lowe go to the Braves. Bring Back Ollie and Pedro.

    • Kherubconamor says:

      + Manny!

    • alex242 says:

lol.. very funny stuff man.. now, are you a phillies fan?

    • CaseStreet says:

boozer, don’t be a biter. Ollie and Pedro 2009!

Actually, I’m like trl and have gone back and forth on so many variations of the rotation that I really don’t know what I want.

      Good luck Omar!

      • alex242 says:

        better case.. see.. better..

        • boozermetsfan says:

case i don’t know what that means:

          “don’t be a biter”

i just want ollie and petey back and manny too. there isn’t a more fun pitcher to watch on the mets than ollie.

          pedro is baseball yoda.

    • jaydh says:

i would sign on for this. It would pretty much allow us to make positional player changes as well.

    • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

I agree, if we arent getting both Lowe and Ollie, Let Lowe walk, he looks like a brave anyway

I want them both, but if you have to choose, there is nothing wrong with the 27 year old lefty that is used to pitching in NY

  3. stickguy says:

tim must have felt bad for Matt getting roasted by some posters on MLBTR. he has been crediting him (with quite flowery praise) quite a bit lately.

  4. dominicanboy08 says:

off-topic, but what are the possibilities of the mets calling up Brad Holt to the majors. I mean the guy has the 2nd best fastball in the minors, he is our best prospect behind f-mart,flores and niese and is like 22 years old. do the mets see him as SP or a bullpen guy?

    • stickguy says:

I wold be shocked to see him up any earlier than September 9and that is if he has a big year and they want to just give him a little taste of the good life). ALmost no chance he gets called up to actually pitch.

But they certainly see him as a SP. Probably the best overall SP prospect right now.

    • CaseStreet says:

If I were a GM, and I’m not, I’d only call up a rookie if he’s knocking down the door to the bigs. That way you have them under control during their most productive years, instead of what the Pirates did to Ollie.

    • mrmustseetv says:

Why?! Why? Why do Mets fans buy into the hype of their prospects way too early.

      1) Holt has a very good fastball, but it’s not the second best in all of the minors.

      2) Holt has nothing else to offer. His secondary pitches are “developing” but are not there.

      3) If you bring him up now it’s as a one-pitch reliever and major league hitters will sit dead red and rock this kid.

      4) Let this kid be for another year in the minors. Let him work on his secondary stuff and, maybe, just maybe we’ll have something special. He’s way too raw for people to be buying into the hype right now.

Oh, and Daniel Murphy is not Wade Boggs everybody. Let’s not enshrine him in Cooperstown just yet. He had a nice few weeks. He plays hard and I like that, but let him do this over an entire season before people start going nuts.

      • oleosmirf says:

Danny Murphy is more like Ted Williams…
Nick Evans is the next Kieth Hernandez

Evans and Murphy > Manny and Delgado in every possible

      • F.Calisi says:

I think he meant best SP in the Mets minors?

      • alex242 says:

        lol, wow..

your right in a lot of points but.. wow.. and mrmust see tv.. and holt does have the 2nd best fastball in the minors..

      • dominicanboy08 says:

wow.. calm down, I am just following all the good reports about him, scouts are impressed with his stuff. why shouldnt we be excited about our prospects?

    • Holt has K/9 of 12 with just a fastball! That is one hot potato.

Very exciting indeed although I highly doubt he’ll get any major league time. I could see him ending the season in AA and starting 2010 in AAA but 2009 seems too quick even for a Met farmhand.

      • alex242 says:

        here’s a scout onhim:

“Holt’s fastball was not just New York Penn League good, it was a plus major league offering. First, it moves. He can run it into righties and sink it. Second, he commanded it very well”

take that mr must see tv..

        • mrmustseetv says:

I’m not saying you can’t get excited, but temper your excitement. I remember when people thought Alex Escobar was the next Vlad Guerrero, Alex Ochoa the next Sammy Sosa, Pete Schourek the next Frank Viola, etc.

I’m not one for rushing prospects to being with. This is one HUGE criticism I have of the Mets. It’s not that it can hurt their natural development, but that if the prospects struggle it also hurts their trade value.

That said, I do like Martinez, Flores and Holt.

          1) I think part of Martinez’s problem was that he was rushed to AA and also that he could not stay healthy. I’m excited to see what he does in AAA after his impressive winter ball play. Still, I think he’s a year away. He also still needs to work on his pitch recognition as well as prove he can stay healthy.

          2) Wilmer Flores was impressive and you can’t help but get excited, but he’s only 16. I’m not saying that to take away from his obvious talent or what he did, but let’s see him do that against better competition in AA at some point. I say him play and, while he made all plays to him, I’m not sure how he will handle the position when he loses a step or two as he fills out. His arm is pretty impressive so third base or right field would be his best spots.

          3) I like Holt. He proved me wrong because I want the Mets to take Chris Friedrich, but Holt is still raw. Many pitchers can dominate the NY-Penn League with either control or a good fastball. Let’s see what he does in AA and how his secondary pitches develop. If he can develop his curve and a halfway decent change, then he has a chance. Some scouts compare him to Pelfrey. I think Pelfrey had better stuff and control at the same stage, but one can drea, – though temper that.

          :)

Sign Garland and Pettitte. LOL. I am going to change every 5 minutes.
Garland and Pettitte would only cost 18 million and still leave you money to go get a LF.

    Wait, never mind.
Sign Garland and Pedro and get Manny.

    Wait, never mind
Sign Lowe and trade for Niese. Wait we already have Niese.

Forget this, I am running for president.

    • longislandmetsfan says:

      good stuff there, trs

    • alex242 says:

lol, good stuff.. i’m glad you realize yourself that you’ve changed your rotation and roster about.. um.. 234567 times!! lol

      • therealsince86 says:

You have to right now. That’s the thing. People on here make things so cut and dry.
“WE HAVE TO GET MANNY OR ELSE”
WE HAVE TO GET LOWE OR ELSE

There are 50 different options Omar could do that COULD still lead to the same result as the other options. That’s why GM’s get paid so much.

        • alex242 says:

agree, but we have one of the worst GM’s for a team in contention in all baseball.. specially if he keeps bringin his rejects from his expos/nationals days.. ugh..

          • CaseStreet says:

Alex, I don’t understand all the Omar hate. Yeah, Castillo and Alou didn’t work out, but he really didn’t have any options with Castillo and I don’t remember there being any other options other than Alou, especially after trading both Gomez and Millz.

          • boozermetsfan says:

i learned something new today. hope to be boozing by 8 in time for the BCS game.

  6. mrmustseetv says:

The Mets have better depth in their minors than they did last year, but their farm system is still not in the upper half in all of baseball. They lack overall depth and impact players.

Yes, they have Martinez and Flores, but many teams have two top blue chippers, som have more. After that, the system has some nice quality, but not impact type players.

Holt may be one, but he’s still way to raw.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

who’s saying we have a top farm system?

    • oleosmirf says:

yea it would be nice if we had some prospects over the age of 20 that are any good.

i mean besides Niese and maybe Parnell (not sold on him) there really isnt anyone

A low rumble, followed by a metallic squink, then a mysterious glonk.

  8. keep it posi says:

Tim Dierkes is really high on Lowe. Comparing him to Burnett is absurd. Lowe has had one good season then many average ones. He is an aging pitcher past his prime.
