Tim Dierkes is really high on Lowe. Comparing him to Burnett is absurd. Lowe has had one good season then many average ones. He is an aging pitcher past his prime.

Alex, I don't understand all the Omar hate. Yeah, Castillo and Alou didn't work out, but he really didn't have any options with Castillo and I don't remember there being any other options other than Alou, especially after trading both Gomez and Millz.

I'm not saying you can't get excited, but temper your excitement. I remember when people thought Alex Escobar was the next Vlad Guerrero, Alex Ochoa the next Sammy Sosa, Pete Schourek the next Frank Viola, etc.

I'm not one for rushing prospects to being with. This is one HUGE criticism I have of the Mets. It's not that it can hurt their natural development, but that if the prospects struggle it also hurts their trade value.

That said, I do like Martinez, Flores and Holt.

1) I think part of Martinez's problem was that he was rushed to AA and also that he could not stay healthy. I'm excited to see what he does in AAA after his impressive winter ball play. Still, I think he's a year away. He also still needs to work on his pitch recognition as well as prove he can stay healthy.

2) Wilmer Flores was impressive and you can't help but get excited, but he's only 16. I'm not saying that to take away from his obvious talent or what he did, but let's see him do that against better competition in AA at some point. I say him play and, while he made all plays to him, I'm not sure how he will handle the position when he loses a step or two as he fills out. His arm is pretty impressive so third base or right field would be his best spots.

3) I like Holt. He proved me wrong because I want the Mets to take Chris Friedrich, but Holt is still raw. Many pitchers can dominate the NY-Penn League with either control or a good fastball. Let's see what he does in AA and how his secondary pitches develop. If he can develop his curve and a halfway decent change, then he has a chance. Some scouts compare him to Pelfrey. I think Pelfrey had better stuff and control at the same stage, but one can drea, - though temper that.

The Mets have better depth in their minors than they did last year, but their farm system is still not in the upper half in all of baseball. They lack overall depth and impact players.

Yes, they have Martinez and Flores, but many teams have two top blue chippers, som have more. After that, the system has some nice quality, but not impact type players.

Holt may be one, but he's still way to raw.
