In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Pedro Martinez said he’s open to pitching for any team, ‘but the Mets are far and away his first choice.’
According to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, signing Martinez to a low base salary with incentives is still an option.
“I went over to the Mets with something in mind, to win a World Series in the National League, and I haven’t achieved that,” Martinez tells the Post.
Martinez also talks to the Post about 2008, set backs, and Derek Lowe, who he played with in Boston.
Yesterday, the New York Post said Omar Minaya is expected to speak with Martinez’s agent next week.

I am reserving the right to flip again. IF Pedro would sign for 4 million or less AND Redding would agree to come in and be a long relief guy for 3 million I could see doing this. Especially if we would use the money to get a hitter.
I would only bring back Pedro for the deal the Braves reportedly offered Smoltz. $2M guaranteed with tons of incentives. Otherwise, I just as rather sign Redding who I know is more likely not to injure himself after 3 pitches.
Agreed, but why not get both? Redding would be a great option for the LR pitcher and could fill in for Pedro. Yes he wants to start but no one is going to give him more than 3 million anyway. 3 million for that type of security is nothing.
Also, if Pedro wants to be here so badly then like you said sign for 2 million and incentives.
I like TRS’ idea, if they are getting someone like Pedro. Get a guy like Redding to have in reserve in case he goes down (OK, when he goes down!).
Wonder what the offer they made to Redding was (years mostly)? He cold be a valuable guy if cheap enough, since it gives them so me flexibility.
Not enthused though about getting Pedro back.
Well yeah, if you could get both, why not, but it sounds like Redding might actually get a shot elsewhere if we don’t sign him. I’m sure a team like Colorado will throw $3M at him to be in the rotation.
If you are Redding and the Mets offer you 3 million and the Rockies offer you the same. You will start in Colorado or be the LRP and get most likely 15 starts for the Mets. Which one would you choose if you were working for a contract next year? I would choose the Mets.
I don’t see a need for Redding as long as we have Stokes.
They’ll both give us the same mediocre 5 innings as starters but I prefer to keep Stokes around and in the pen because I like his K ability.
I understand everyone talks of saving money and brining back Pedro and another affordable pitcher. But what bat is left on the market that can help us? And don’t say Manny guys because unless Omar gets full, 100% control of the team, that isn’t happening.
Wiggy, Dunn and Abreu can all help.
Was Marcus Thames non-tendered? Because he could in essence be a better version of Nick Evans, splitting time in the corner OF and giving Delgado a breather at first. And Thames actually has pop in his bat.
Some pop, and a really bad OBP.
I don’t think they should be too infatuated with HRs. I would rather have some good hitters (high OBP, plenty of doubles, etc.) instead of a 30 HR all or nothing guy that never gets on base.
Just depends, usually for a PH guy I am more concerned about power.
Agreed. We need a pinch hitter who can jack a few. Damion Easley actually was decent in that regard.
I’d trade a mid-level prospect for Thames. He’d be serviceable as backups to both corners in the outfield and to Delgado.
I really wish the Mets were in on Baldelli.
I thought so, but turns out no.
OH NOES PASCUCCI SIGNED WITH THE DODGERS!!! THE SAVIOR IS GONE!!!!
(sarcasm if you couldn’t tell)
Ted Berg must be devistated
You are so funny.
could care less about your opinion, i’m just glad hes gone so we can’t read a bunch of posts about why the Mets aren’t bringing up a career minor leaguer who should be a DH at BEST
Why are you the only person still talking about it though? Just a thought.
you see Mikey, i’m talking about it because there ACTUALLY was just news regarding him. I found it refreshing and humorous, so I posted on it.
So, if you check other websites, you will find this didn’t just pop up out of nowhere, the signing actually just happened
Funny how it was on “other websites” but not on here … yet you posted that specifically to mock someone. Jealousy is a biotch I guess.
If he signs cheap, could be the lowest risk, highest reward signing of the year. Pedro’s due for a bounceback year. He needs to stay on the field though.
jesus christ.. i can’t believe THE NEW YORK METS are going in that direction again!!! what a f**king organitazion!!!!
After reading the article Alex, I have changed my mind. IF the Mets would be willing to bring in Pedro AND a guy like Redding I would be ok with it. IF they used the left over money on offense.
and by using money in a bat do you mean………..???
Lowe, Pedro and Redding that’s a lot of depth.
Johan, Lowe, Pelfrey, Pedro, Maine, Redding, Niese, Parnell, Figgy, Knight. That’s a lot better than what we have had the last 2 years.
That is a lot better than what we’ve had. Pedro only makes sense on a real low base salary. Like $2.5 mil.
Yeah, on a low salary, and with no expectation of bieng more than the 5th starter, take a shot on it.
Heck, the Red Sox are giving Smoltz 5 mill guaranteed, and he is out until at least June, if he pitches at all. Seems his shoulder is held toghether by 5 anchors or something.
So, low salary + incentives to let Pedro fight for a job? Might get lucky.
And if Redding can also be in the mix, even better.
Lowe and Pedro together would certainly help to keep Manny in check….
BDWY,
YOU’RE KIDDING RIGHT ?
If he’s open to a significant pay cut, I’m all for it. He can help tutor some of they young guys.
I’m a bit torn on bringing Pedro back. As this blog has mentioned, whenever he pitches there’s more mention of whether he feels fine after throwing 5 innings and if he’ll make his next start.
That said, he does add a certain degree of levity to the clubhouse and even with his diminished stuff can still get guys out although they tend to be against younger lineups or poor offensive teams.
The problem is that against the tougher lineups he gets rocked. Bottom line is that if he’s taking up a roster spot he needs to perform.
IF, AND THAT’S A BIG IF, HE’S HEALTHY THEN MAYBE 2 OR 3 INNINGS NO MORE.
HE CAN ALSO HELP KEEP THE BENCH LOOSE DURING THE DOG DAYS.
Bring Back Pedro!!!! This guy is not done and we will regret it when he wins CBPOY somewhere else!
With all that depth still 9 of those 10 guys are righties. N/G if you ask me. Remember who’s in our division. Utley, Howard, Ibanez. Need I say more. We need 2 lefties in the rotation and 1 more lefty in the pen. I am all for Lowe with a cheap lefty at the 5 spot. Odalis Perez or a guy like that? For the pen Ohman, Reyes, Takahashi? 1 more lefty speciaist and we’re set.
Redding in long relief/ 5th starter if Pedro gets hurt does not sound awful. But I can see money being spent better in other ways.
Its all about Depth in the rotation, having 6 or 7 guys who can step in, especially with Maine coming off an injury and Pelfrey being at risk for a step back after logging so many innings.
I’m completely fine bringing in Pedro at a decent price. I don’t see the Mets giving Pedro enough money that would preclude them from signing another player. If they sign him it will be on their terms, and If that’s the case, I say go for it.
No, thank you. They’d have to guarantee Pedro a rotation spot, and they will be hard-pressed to pull him is he is pitching badly… just because he is Pedro.
“Pedro will bounce back, blah, blah, blah..”
What Matt said yesterday regarding Pedro pretty much nailed it, IMO.
We took a chance on Delgado, after that awful start, and, look at what he did? I think Pedro can be effective and with th edepth of our rotation and our new pen, I feel less certain, that the starter has to go 7-8 innings to win a game. Our pen will be lights out AWSOME, so a bad start from Pedro or Perez, will not cost us a game everytime. Sure, Pedro does not strike fear into the hitters like he once did, bit, HE’S PEDRO!!! If the price is rigt give him a chance, if he is greedy and wants more, let him walk.
DON’T BRING HIM BACK! Haven’t we learned anything. Now is not the time to sign a fading hasbeen. Let Pedro go and move on.
Dont bring pedro back. I love pedro the energy he brings to the club and how much he helps team chemistry. However everytime he take the mound we all cringe and hope its not the last time he steps on the rubber for the rest of the season. Spend the money you were going to give Pedro to Lowe and Redding.
