Schneider's stats were horrid man wow. But how much did Castro catch in September during the collapse pt. 2? Maybe the numbers are skewed b/c Schneider caught most of those games.

I for one like the signing and this is why:

1) We are getting better production at the 5 spot than we have gotten in the past.
2) Depth is good
3) He's cheap
4) It doesn't keep us from going after anyone else because he can just slide into the bullpen if we do.
5) It's a one year contract
5a) He's motivated to play for a new one
5b) If he has a good year, and you combine that with his 10 wins from 2008, he MIGHT be able to pitch his way into Type B status? Maybe?

Even if 5b doesn't apply (don't kill me if it doesn't) , all other points do, so I personally love it.

OK, now go and run the stats from every single #5 starter in the league last year and don't come back until you do.

This is why you are not and will never be a GM my friend.

I'd take Redding for 2.2 MM over Wolf who wants a multiyear deal around 10MM per.

now that redding might be the #5 starter i think the mets should pursue ollie more than lowe. u cant have santana as the only starting lefty and i want a championship in 09 so i dont feel ready for jon niese to play a big role.

It's easy to say, "relax, it's just the 5th starter", but every fifth day, HE will be the starting pitcher. So I think the 5th starter is pretty important.

That said, why sign a guy who was 10-11 last year, with a 4.95 ERA? What does this guy have that ANY mediocre pitcher that the Mets already have (ie Brandon Knight, Nelson Figueroa) or unproven prospect (Jon Niese) can't provide?

I'm not saying that Niese, Knight, or Figgy is the answer...but I'm pretty certain that Redding isn't either.
