Catcher: Delgado would be Happy with Pudge
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 12, 2009 1:02 pm

Mets 1B Carlos Delgado recently told ESPN Deportes that he would be happy to see the Mets sign free-agent C Ivan Rodriguez, adding:

“I’m a fan of Ivan.  If we can get a catcher of that quality, fine, but
pitching is the priority.”

carlos, have you met Brian Schneiderhe’s the guy who wears the mask and the big puffy glove

Delgado also discussed the team’s current pitching staff, acquiring Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz, and his personal goal to be more consistent at the plate next season.

thanks to Andres M for the link and translation

Rodriguez had been hitting .295 for the Tigers last season, before being traded to the Yankees, with whom he hit just .219.

  1. mistermet says:

    Idiot

    • jrg1397 says:

Why is he an idiot? Scheneider showed he cant hit and cant call a game and his defence was not what was sold to us at the time of the trade. it seems church was the better addition to the team not him. Pudge would bring in the griddyness we had with LoDuca but a better hitter and better defensive catcher.

      • mikey_FF says:

He’s an idiot because he just publicly dissed one of his team mates. Regardless of whether Schneider is good or not … you don’t show up your team mates in the media.

      • F.Calisi says:

I know I miss Lo Duca badly.

        • Joe Bacci says:

Lo Duca might have been the difference.

          • MetFanNickATL says:

Miss LoLoser badly? I don’t know if you guys recall the 2007 season, but he has alot to do with the big collapse.

Pudge & Castro combo is definitely an upgrade. We can probably get him cheap as well.

        • johandkrod says:

ok.this has nothing to do with what you said calisi, i just wanted my comment at the top.the blog sais “hello delgado, schnieders the one catching for you!” but i have to say, schnieder was awful. i remember in the beggining of the year gary cohen of sny was sayin how schnieder was one of the best defensive catchers in the game and thats the reason why the mets got him, but it seemed every damn game, schnieder let a ball get bye. he was horrific behind the dish this year!

      • nrmax88 says:

Pudge is just horrible. Schneider outproduced him at the plate, that should tell you how bad he is. Saying he hit 295 in Detroit is very misleading, it gives the impression that he was, you know, good. His defense isn;t very good any more, pitchers hate throwing too him, although he still has the gun. Doesn’t help he calls exclusively fastballs to help throw guys out easier. Schneider was also one of the Mets better hitters the last 2 months, which people don’t realize. Replacing him with Pudge is at best (and I am being friendly), a lateral move. At best.

    • ravi3 says:

The link is dead now, but i head read it earlier. Delgado didn’t just come out and say what he did about Pudge. The interviewer asked him a question about I-Rod, and Carlos just responded.

    • Iwant2wintheEast says:

Finally, somebody in the mets organization realized they need a catcher. I’m tired of Brian Schenider. A washed Pudge and a wash up Varitek is better than Brian Schenider will ever be.
And by the way Carlos Delgado, are you going to be productive this year? If not, you can expect the Mets to trade you by mid season.

  2. nydre78 says:

Ah yes, another gem by good old Carlos “sometimes we get bored” Delgado.

I wish the Mets could afford to deal him….

  3. That’s a very strange thing to say while your team still has two catchers on the roster. I wonder, was he asked specifically for his opinion on Ivan Rodriguez or did he randomly bring him up? The ESPN Deportes link is dead.

  4. Seavertheman says:

Doesn’t sound like he was dissing Schneider, merely saying he liked IRod. Much ado about nothing.

  5. deelee says:

Maybe Delgado saw the report about Schneider’s drawing bloated ERA from pitchers compared with Castro.

Then again, maybe he should try to hit HR’s rather than play GM.

    • F.Calisi says:

Maybe so, but Castro can’t stay healthy enough to play all the time from what we have seen.

    • just-mlb says:

uhh I think he hit HR’s better than Schneider hit, ran, threw runners out, called a game put together x2

As a matter of fact, I dare to say that Delgado is the best hitting 1B we have had since 1988.

And yet people (including Matt ) wanna ship him out for a #5 starter

      lol

  6. Agees Catch says:

I’ve been touting this as a good signing for months. Had to get one right eventually. Wait, i liked Redding too…. maybe i’m channeling Omar..?…

    • fongulalou says:

Yeah, great move. Throw money at a guy whos
best days are long behind him while not uprgading the position.

      • jrg1397 says:

not upgrading sheneider is not that good. pudege is a proven leader he just doesnt fit with the yanks

        • fongulalou says:

and how exactly would pudge at this point
          be an upgrade?

          • just-mlb says:

ummm almost every pitching staff he has ever caught improved their stats under him

he took the marlins from the bottom to the top in less than 2 years…he took the tigers from the worst team in baseball to the WS in 3 years…

he cant throw out runners like he used to, but he is a proven leader

  7. VCarver says:

After that data on Schneider came out, I’m really down on him. But i-rod is too much of a risk and he’s washed up. No thanks.

  8. alex242 says:

i’d be happy with delgado done.. can i have a post for that matt?

  9. casey s. says:

What to be a good teammate Delgado!

  10. therealsince86 says:

At this point, however, Pudge would cost less than Schnieder and maybe about the same as Castro. Why not sign him and trade Schnieder/Castro for a LHRP or utility guy? What do you lose?

    • VCarver says:

Because the chances of trading Schneider since that data came out are probably zero.

Besides, Castro can hit with pop. i-Rod’s best hitting days are way behind him.

      • therealsince86 says:

Pudge hit better than Schnider last year and Castro is never healthy to be a big bat.

        • VCarver says:

Yeah, playing only part time. And he hit like crap with the Yankees.

He’ll be 39-40 next year. Bad risk, especially since he’s a Bora$$ client so he’ll be asking for more than he’s worth.

          • therealsince86 says:

He is not going to get it. Obviously if he was asking for a lot then you stay away. At this point I would be surprised if he got 3 million.

        • F.Calisi says:

Agreed Castro can’t stay healthy at all.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I agree. At least Pudge is a righty, so he could at the very least balance the bottom of the lineup a bit better.

  11. FrankyJay says:

Just another nonsense from ESPN, what they don’t write is that he was asked about the possibility of IRod sign with the Mets. They just write the answer and it looks like he is telling the Mets to do it.
The Mets should sign him, he wont cost much, probably a one year deal, He already has a ring and i prefer Rodriguez-Schneider more than Schneider-Castro combo.
I dont know how the braves hasn’t been interested in him, he’s playing winter ball in PR, he is batting very well and has Javier Vazquez (recently trade to the braves) pitching very well too with Ponce, they are 3-0 winning their best of seven semifinals.

  12. alex242 says:

like we need to listen to anything this bum have to say, he doesn’t respect the flag, the manager, the general manager AND dis-sed the team, now he’s making quotes of who he wants?? gimme a f***** break..

    • jrg1397 says:

what are you talking about dude. as an american he has the right to boycott what ever he wants. yes he is an american. Couse peurto Ricans are americans by birth. Also people were not complaining when he went on a good hitting run last year. You give me a break

      • bobblehead says:

        F$!$ Puerto Rico!

      • alex242 says:

just he is entitle to do whatever he wants or say whatever he feels like so AM I.. so if u don’t like what i posted don’t reply back plain and simple.. never liked him when he dis-sed us the way he did in 2005.. ever since is been a sour relationship for me.. i’d be the first happy met fan when he’s gone/..

        • bobblehead says:

True dat! He doesn’t deserve America or the millions he makes, regardless of his month of greatness last year. The Mets should deal this guy the first opportunity they get.

          • Willie Randolph says:

Now the more patriotics,* neither of you likes the WBC,and do you want to know why ?because neither of you cares about USA cause you are the “big nation” thats why USA didnt won !

            *example

sorry alex ,i agree with u most of the time but not if u mess with my little island !

          • The Stork says:

            Alex and Bobble-

Congratulations! You have just produced two of the most inane comments ever posted to Mets Blog. Why don’t you take your heads, while still in the sand, and ressurrect this discussion over at worldnetdaily, or other paranoid, know nothing blog. But not here. Grow up.

  13. therealsince86 says:

Pudge would be great in a platoon role with Schnieder. You could even make a case for bringing him in and trading Schnieder and Castro and going with Pudge/Cancel for your utility IF and LHRP. That would actually save you money.

    • F.Calisi says:

I like that idea, I enjoyed when Cancel played. I thought he was very focused when they gave him the chance to get off the bench and wanted to be there.

  14. mistermet says:

I want Schneider gone as much as the next guy, but you can’t have a supposed “great teammate” like Delgado campaigning for another catcher. One of many reasons the Mets should have moved on and gotten an new first baseman this year.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

We don’t know if he campaigned. He could have been asked how he feels about the Mets possibly acquiring free agent and fellow countryman Ivan Rodriguez.

  15. LetsGoMets123 says:

Sign him to a minor league contract. Keep him in AAA. It would be a GREAT insurance policy. If Schneider or Castro goes down, Pudge to the rescue. Not so bad.

  16. mrose says:

a catcher of Pudge’s quality? What year is Delgado in?

  17. therealsince86 says:

If nothing else if you sign him and trade Schnieder you have balanced the bottom of your order and brought in a guy that would have 10 more extrabase hits and can still run. He had 10 SB and 3 triples last year.

  18. VCarver says:

Don’t forget that i-rod has a rep, albeit an old one, for not being a great game caller.

He’s a Bora$$ client too. Just stay away from as many of them as you can.

  19. MetsFan4Decades says:

I’d have liked to hear that whole interview. Something doesn’t seem right with Delgado’s comments. Something reported out of context maybe? Otherwise, it just doesn’t make sense….

    • therealsince86 says:

He was ask specifically about the idea of the Mets signing Pudge.

    • fongulalou says:

You don’t sign 37y/o Catchers to start for
      your team.

      • therealsince86 says:

You don’t sign them to multiple years. However, if you keep Schnieder or Castro and have Cancel in the minors why does it hurt you?

        • alex242 says:

          TRS:

Sttop.. this guy is another steroid junkie!! please no.. ur better than that.. why don’t u want bonds here?? is the same story..

  20. 7train says:

    Lineup depth is huge!!!!!!!!!

  21. therealsince86 says:

Guys who would you rather have up with 2 outs in the 9th inning with a runner on? Schnieder or Pudge. And you can’t say Castro because he’s injured with back pain and can’t go.

  22. therealsince86 says:

No GM is going to pay attention to that scewed report that was produced by some fans. Schnieder’s value is just what it was before the report. I am sure that if the RSox don’t sign Tek then you could get a return for him.

  23. Darth Manuel says:

This stinks! I can’t stand Schneider, and we have so many holes and so little money to play with. What about if Pudge excepts a two million dollar deal which is heavy on incentives. Then give Schneider to the long island ducks for an 87 Buick regal.

    • bobblehead says:

Ha! I’d take an ‘83 Dodge Aries station wagon at this point!

      • Darth Manuel says:

Right! This guy had problems even catching the ball last season. Not to mention his issues with game calling. Why we didn’t protect Jesus Flores will always remain a mystery to me.

  24. bkfitz says:

    Player A:
    .257/.339/.367

    Player B:
    .276/.319/.394

Guess which one is Brian Schneider and which one is Ivan Rodriguez.

Answer: Schneider is player A and Rodriguez is player B.

Ivan Rodriguez (I refuse to disrespect Carlton Fisk by calling Ivan “Pudge”) is a shell of his former self. He could never take a walk then and still cant. Now because his BA is slipping, his OBP is too. He’s lost his much of his power, too.

He’s a terrible game caller, as well. He became the back up on the Yankees last year b/c no one wanted to pitch to him.

    • alex242 says:

      steroids..

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I’d still take him over Schneider. At least with Pudge, there is a small chance that he could hit .300 because he has the ability and has done it so many times. With Schneider, the best you can hope for is what he did last year.

      • bkfitz says:

Rodriguez’s OBP is terrible. And as mentioned below, his game calling is awful. He calls a lot of fastballs to throw runners out.

I’d rather trade for Yadier Molina (yes, THE Yadier Molina) than sign Rodriguez.

    • Nightlife says:

I don’t like Schneider that much, but I agree with everything you said, bkfitz. Especially about Pudges game calling, which was atrocious last season. Pudge isn’t good anymore–plain and simple.

  25. toomanyuniforms says:

    Schneider:

“Teixeira would have been a serious upgrade

No, he didn’t really say that, but he should ave.

  26. dominicanboy08 says:

sign i-rod and trade schneider, evans and kunz to boston for Clay Buchholz, the guy has some nasty stuff.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I appreciate the creativity, but that veers pretty close to “a ton of crap for an ounce of gold.”

      • dominicanboy08 says:

Buchholz was terrible last year, maybe they want to trade him..you never know, plus they have like 10 starters…lol

  27. FlightFromHouston says:

Delgado + Pudge would make Wright even more ignored as a leader in the clubhouse.

  28. VCarver says:

If you’re going to throw a couple million at I-Rod, I’d rather risk that money on someone like D. Reyes.

Forget I-Rod. He’s just a shell of his former self. Literally and figuratively.

    • alex242 says:

WHY would anybody in their right mind would want this guy on the team? honestly.. can we have somebody ask for the mets to get a GOOD player for once???? jose reyes ask for manny!!!! santana ask for oswalt!!!! jesus
      !!

  29. dave27 says:

If the Mets want to sign a fading catcher, Varitek is clearly the better option. He can’t hit anymore, but clearly he is a positive force in the clubhouse and calling a game.

I will always be impressed with the job Rodriguez did with the Marlins, but aside from that season he’s usually proven to be a fairly selfish player who focuses on the wrong things defensively (throwing out runners vs. calling a game). And he can;t hit now that he has shrunk 2 helmet sizes.

    • therealsince86 says:

      Tek cost a pick.

      • stickguy says:

Well, if they sign Lowe, the Tek pick will be down into the 3rd round anyway, so not that big of a deal.

Just sign more international guys with the money you save not signing draft picks.

        • stickguy says:

Oh, I should say that I think Tek is shot, and can’t hold a candle to Schneider as a hitter!

Still, if they could get him for a 1 year deal at comparable to Schneider money, I would do it. Just to see some new blood!

  30. Genesis Does says:

If we’re going to sign an aging catcher id rather get Varitek. we KNOW he calls a good game, has real leadership skills, and would get in the Phillies’ faces.

    • DAK442 says:

If we’re gonna sign an aging catcher, let’s see what Mike Piazza is up to!

I’m kidding, but he looked fantastic at the Shea closing ceremony – trim, really good shape.

  31. Darth Manuel says:

Why is it so hard to find a good catcher these days. I know I shouldn’t say this,, but I would probably take back Lo duca than have Schneider behind the plate. There is just something about Brian that makes me want to smash my fist into a piece of gla-ss.

  32. GregB says:

“…carlos, have you met Brian Schneider… he’s the guy who wears the mask and the big puffy glove…”

What’s he supposed to say? “IRod is done. Now way he should be a Met?”

Matt, there’s a difference between ‘news’ and ‘gossip’. This wasn’t news.

    • Wanny Backstra says:

“Pudge has always been a great player and is a hero to many in Puerto Rico. But it is not my place to pick players for this team or to comment on potential acquisitions. We have two catchers on this team right now and I know they can get the job done too.”

  33. Elastic says:

Pudge is too damn old. DH yes, C no.

  34. stickguy says:

No pudge please. I do want to see a new catcher, but would prefer a younger guy 9some kind of “catcher of the future” type).

I am actaully looking forward to next off season, when (hopefully! barring extensions) a lot of the remaining old guys will be cut loose.

Delgado, Schneider and Castro, all expiring contracts. And of course Wagner, but he got a head start…

  35. fongulalou says:

Congrats to Rickey And Rice making the Hall.

  36. rd says:

Delgado talking sh—….?? He should be outa here.. I agree with the upgrade, but I’m sooo sick of Delgado and his attitude/arrognace.. Ship out that 12 million and get Manny!!

  37. Bruce Boisclair says:

As indicated above, Jason Varitek. His leadership alone could be worth the 3rd round pick.

Too bad you can’t trade draft picks in baseball, otherwise we could then trade Schneider to the Red Sox to get the 3rd round pick. I’d take some AA players back for him.

    Fair?

  38. Number57 says:

I think he knows something we don’t.

  39. The Stork says:

First, this must be a slow news day; who cares what anyone says to ESPN in any language…..

Second, in no way do we need either a washed up Pudge or a washed up Varitek.

    No thank you!

  40. Fiya Minaya says:

Please ship this malcontent (Delgado) out already. Quitting on a manager wasn’t enough?

    • oleosmirf says:

thats some peoples opinion but if wasnt for Delgado the Mets would have barerly finished above 500

  41. oleosmirf says:

varitek would be a great Catcher for us. sure he’d probably bat around .250 but so would Schneider plus Varitek has more power and is a leader and a winner…

  42. the_other_matt says:

who would take Schneider and why?

  43. mextache says:

Please. God. No. Hey Carlos, there are some who would argue that Adam Dunn would be an upgrade at first.

  44. uppertank says:

Delgado is going to make the All Star Team in 2009.

  45. whatdatmean says:

1.delgado is right…signing Irod is a no brainer…good leader, solid hitter for average, has won before, and would be a nice compliment to Schneider.
    2. Delgado is the guy that needs to go. he is too inconsistant and disruptive for the Mets. Trade him while he has value, expecially when Manny + Dunn are still available
    3. Trading Murphy is not an option. He has all the POTENTIAL to be the Mets answer for pedroia or youk…players who are gritty, can hit, and work to learn positions. He has potential and appears to have skills we need.
    4. Young makes a ton of sense as long as it doesnt cost murphy. Honestly, I could see Niese, Marte, + Evans/prospect for Young working well.

The Mets need to get more clutch, grittier, and hit for average.

  46. whatdatmean says:

3 easy steps, and not breaking the bank here…
    1. sign Irod, Lowe, D Reyes, + Dunn
    2. Trade delgado, castro, + kunz for bucholtz + prospect
3.trade Niese, Marte, + evans for young
[add in parnell for Salty if possible]

    ‘09 Mets
    1.reyes-ss, 2.YOUNG-2B, 3.beltran-cf, 4.wright-3b, 5.DUNN-1B, 6.murphy/tatis-lf, 7.church/tatis-rf, 8.IROD/schneid-c
balance of obg, avg, + power
    ‘10 Mets…
murphy stays in LF, Fmart platoons in RF/LF, Dunn stays at 1b

    • Slob says:

GM’s everywhere are laughing at you.

    • Iwant2wintheEast says:

I think Michael Young is one of the best players in baseball, but will he want to move his postion again? I think he wants to go to a team that will play him at SS. Although in a perfect world Young is the Mets number 2 hitter. I think the Rangers would ask for Murphy on top Niese, Parnell, Marte, and Evans. If you wnat Salty as well.

  47. wladair says:

I do not have any objections to Brian Schneider as our catcher. Delgado just wants to expand the Los Mets nation and get I-Rod, big mistake. Keep Schneider or bring Paulie back to keep everyone in line and he will back up David Wright in the clubhouse.
