Last wek, Ken Davidoff said in Newsday that the
Yankees prefer to trade OF Xavier Nady, instead of 1B-OF Nick Swisher.
“The Angels and possibly the Giants and Mets could be suitors,” Nick Cafardo simply writes in the Boston Globe.
However, Davidoff added, “The Mets are focused on their starting rotation and are not looking to acquire a bat either through free agency or through a trade.”
…actually, i wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets look to trade for a bat, but, if they do, it will not be until after they complete their overhaul of the pitching staff, like davidoff explains, and it will not involve any top prospects… the way i see it, once the rotation and bullpen are done being worked on, the team will reassess where it is financially… if they have the need, resources, etc., to consider a bat, they will…
…as for nady, i just can’t see the Mets and Yankees hooking up on such a deal…in Fantasy Land maybe, but in reality these two teams just never connect like this…

How about the mega deal with Armando Benitez!!
Did wee miss ESPN this morning? The nationals are expressing interest in both Nady & Swisher.
not that its wrong, but at least I, will only believe rumors when they get on MLBTradeRumors, or here, or a more reliable source. …. ESPN to me isn’t the best, and usually is late in reporting, so early? I don’t believe it :)
ESPN has the signings and trades wayyyyyyyy before this site and MLBTR does. Are you serious. Everything on this site and MLBTR is “according to ESPN”.
Actually it seems like ESPN is a day late this year. Like this morning they are reporting Pedro to the Marlins but last night multiple sites said it was dead. Or the fact that they kept reporting the Andruw Jones deal after it was reported to be dead. ESPN is not for news, it’s for media.
umm…..you haven’t been paying attention very long have you? MANY MANY moves, especially big moves are reported WAY before on MLBTR or here, or other blogs. Heck, even look back to the Santana deal, I think metsblog/mlbtr had it a good DAY before ESPN..
MLBTR provides links to stories appearing in news media outlets. It is not reporting anything.
ok ok way to be technical :)
Bottom line is, you learn about moves quicker here or MLBTR quicker than ESPN most of the time
Little typo, ‘last wek’ missing an e.
I wish Nady was a possible trade, but I’ll believe it when he’s in a mets uniform.
Nady could be useful, but will probably cost too much. And he really isn’t quite as good as some fans would like to remember.
Wiggington could be a viable alternative. Not much difference in $$ probably, but no prospects required. he also can back up at more (infield) positions, while giving the same type of production.
Or just sign Gabe Kapler for 1 year, and get the same thing Nady would give you.
If the Mets were going to trade for a 1 year rental RH bat, I would rather they went after Molina, since that would take care of 2 problems! And they need an upgrade at C way more than another spare part OF.
I like Kapler, a platoon guy that hits lefties well should be how the Mets upgrade in LF unless they are planning on acquiring a real difference maker, ie. Dye, Manny. Since that likely wont happen, they should just bulk up the bench and give Murph a legitimate shot
I’m guessing that they think Tatis can serve that same function. I personally think a guy like Kapler is a better idea, since he at least is a “real” OF!
Your other point is valid. They are really hoping that Murphy can take over as the FT LF, with just spot starts by Tatis (not a full platoon). There are way more RH SPs anyway, so not a big issue.
Kapler though would give them a decent BU for Church if he goes down or just to give him some rest days.
Im thinking about Church with regards to Kapler. If Church falters against lefties we would have 2 nice platoon options. Id like Murphy to play everyday too, but you know Jerry, he likely wont want that to happen and will play Tatis everytime a lefty is on the mound. Also, Kapler can play CF in addition to Reed but with pop to give Beltran an occasional rest
yeah…. but highly doubtful.
The Nady ship has sailed. We do not have the right mix to get him and the Yanks have no interest in shipping him here for our Parnell types
Why would we get Nady when Wiggy is a FA. They would both put up similar numbers and Wiggy makes us more flexible.
But if the Mets were going to make a trade for Nady, what on earth do we have that the Yankee’s would need? Schnieder/Castro? And then we sign Pudge? Even then you would have to put some prospects in the deal. Who do you want to send them in that? Jeremy Reed or Pagan could be added to the deal I guess.
An extreme fantasyland spin is to offer one of those spare OF you mentioned and promise not to compete in the Matt Holliday sweepstakes next year.
The reason one might prefer Nady to Wigginton is for outfield defense. Wigginton can play more positions, but poorly, while Nady plays fewer positions but he plays them adequately.
Every time you write that the Mets can address their outfield or 2B or anything only after the pitching is resolved, you are baically saying that Minaya and Wilpon are too stupid to address 2 areas at once. Why do you continually insult them? Whehter one likes Minaya or not, he certainly is smart enough…. So stop with the insults.
While true, it is possible that they can’t really move on. Supppose they do have a budget and they end up really needing to over pay Lowe or Perez. If they signed that OF then they might not have the flexibility to do it. As for trades, let say that Perez and Lowe both shut out the Mets and they need to make a trade. If you traded prospects for a LF or 2B then you are limited there as well.
TRS nailed it.
But, that still shouldn’t stop them from addressing some of the minor needs, most notably getting a bench MI that can handle 2B. That isn’t likely to cost enough (money most likely, but also prospects if traded for). I expect it to be a FA though.
Heck, even if Omar could trade Caastillo (not that I expect it to happen, or for him to sign O. Hernandez), they would still need a bench guy.
Other than that, it is the SP holding them hostage.
I would not pick up that backup IF yet either. Could be that you can get a guy like Ray Durham for nothing considering the market. Just wait it out. Or maybe you sign Pudge and trade Schnieder/Castro for one.
Nady would be nice. This team is sorely missing a right-handed bat with pop. Outside of Wright, there isn’t much there. Wigginton would be nice in the six hole behind Delgado and I loved Wiggy when he was here, but do we really need a defensive liability out there?
LF defense is entirely overrated. Wiggy would be comparable to Murphy or Evans out there.
Not to mention that if Castillo does not perform it would allow Wiggy or Murphy to take his spot.
Nady is no whiz with the glove either.
Although, and this is for Nostro, neithe is Manny!
LF D is not that big of a deal. Positin correctly, get to most balls, catch what hits your glove, don’t let the ball get behind you, and throw to the correct base or cut off man.
Dave Kingman and George Foster (at the end of his career) patrolled LF at Shea, so it can’t be that hard!
Take a look at the configuration of the Citifield outfield. Outfield defense will be important, and LF defense will be particularly important in games in which Santana pitches.
I disagree. Defense is important at all positions, and not just when your ace pitches. In fact one could make the arguement that D is even more important when the rest of your staff takes the hill — They are not as much of a sure thing and need more help. I’m not saying that you need to have a gold glover at every spot, but you need to have capable defensive players. Case in point, Daniel Murphy is a hard working kid; one who I’d like to see at Citi Field(still can’t get used to saying that) for many years to come. But as hard as Murph works on his D, he may never be a good defensive outfielder. He’ll be nothing more than an infielder thrown out into Left field.
Speaking of Murphy, if his future is at first base like many suggest it will be, I see him as a Sean Casey like player. He may never be a big bopper, but he’ll put up solid numbers.
Anyway, Nady, may not be the best OF out there but he won’t hurt you at the corners. While Wiggy’s offensive numbers may be comparable, he hurts you in LF. Yes Wiggy’s a super sub type of player who can play LF, 3B, 1B 2B, but Nady is just as valuable. He can play LF, RF, 1B, 3B too.
The Mets and Yanks also hooked up on the Robin Ventura/David Justice trade, which served both of the team’s needs at the time, so it’s not impossible.
I floated this to two Yankees fans yesterday. What about this:
Nady to the Mets for Luis Castillo and Pedro Feliciano
-the Yankees are probably the only team with the ability to absorb Castilo’s contract. Plus it gives the Steinbrenner’s a chance to grab one of the Marlins that drove them crazy in ‘03 and made George overpay for Kenny Lofton.
The Yankees could then use the flexiblity at second base to come together with the Dodgers on the much rumored Robinson Cano for Matt Kemp trade. Kemp would give the Yankees a legitimate, young centerfielder, while alieviating the Dodgers outfield logjam and giving Andre Either a full time job.
I know this plan doesn’t completely eliminate the Yankees outfield crowd, but it would solve their centerfield problem, so they may be open to it.
Why on EARTH would the Yankee’s do that and why would the Mets trade their only LHRP?
The Yankee’s are going to want MUCH more than that for Nady and have no reason to increase salary for Nady.
Castillo doesn’t fit in the Yankees type of line up. With absolutely zilch in the power department he’s a DP waiting to happen as their lineup is not constructed to play small ball. Plus they already have a slap hitting middle IF…that guy from the Ford commercials. Cano defiintely has his fair share of space cadet moments at 2B, but the mere fact that he’s not hobbling around on two bad knees at least makes him able enough to cover more ground than Castillo.
I’d be willing to bet the Dodgers would explore FA 2B to fill that spot before considering doing the trade you mentioned above. I don’t care if people think that being back under Torre and Bowa would optimize Cano’s potential, the guy’s stock has seriously dropped these past couple of seasons and the only way I’d take Cano if I’m the Dodgers is if you include one of their higher ceiling guys in the minors or Hughes/Chamberlain.
Not a bad idea. I would love it if somehow the mets could swing it to land Kemp. He’s a young righty, with what has been projected as 30 HR power, and 30 SB speed. He had a solid season last year, his first as a full-time starter.
I’d much rather get him then get Nady.
Kemp would cost a bundle though.
yankees can kill 2 birds. Just move Cano to CF!
by the way:
*Steinbrenners.
Eliminate the apostrophy. Sorry. I just hate grammatical errors and I made a mistake up there.
GET BEN SHEETS!!
Alex, as I posted on the other thread, there HAS to be a reason that no one is interested in him.
Either he is still injured or is wanting WAY too much money. The only teams mentioned are Texas and the Brewers. Any others are just, “well they should be interested in”
I konw, i saw u posted that no team will give him 14 millions true, i’m just saying he’s that good if healthy to get that.. but as much as i want him, i would be deadly scare to sign him for more than 2 year deal..
Has to be the injury at this point. Such a weird off season that a bunch of guys are going to get a lot less than they hooped for.
Some teasm would be going after him hoping to snag him for a low ball.
Like I said before, pay him 2/3 of market value, and if you get 2/3 of his starts, then you come out even or better!
Let Neise be his caddy in AAA
even with all of his injuries, he never issed a season, and in his bad years (2005, 6, 7) sill went over 100 IP each year, and made 20-24 starts.
Unless teams think he may not make it out of the gate, how can you now be trying to sneak in with a 2/20 + incentives of up to another 5 million/year on this guy?
at 10 million, if you get 24 starts and Neise takes the other 8, that is way better than paying Garland the same money to make all 32!
Amazing how a guy with Nady talent keeps moving. Mets need stability in there position players. How great would our bench be with Murphy and Tatis coming off the bench and a guy like Nady holding it down in left. But first pitching needs to be address so Minaya needs to stay focus. Our offense was not the problem last season and hitting can always be address throughout the season.
Nady is a little over-rated in NY fans eyes.
He’s basically a 31 year old, 280 hitter, with 20 home run power. A pretty solid defender, nothing spectacular.
He’s a very good fit for this Mets team, as they need a Right handed hitting corner outfielder, which is what he is. Other then that he’s nothing special.
You also just described gabe Kapler, along with a bunch of other guys floating around. Some start, some platoon, some are bench guys. But they are out there.
Tatis actually might be the same thing.
mark – the xman was not overrated, i loved him ..he batted 6th and protected wright in the lineup,
wright hit 20 hrs in the first half of 06 with nady batting behind him, when nady was traded he hit 6…maybe you could make the case he got rundown, i believe it was nady’s bat
Nady had a great couple of months in PItt, then came back down to earth in the AL IIRC.
I honestly think that Murphy FT (with some spot starts by Tatis, or a guy like Kapler if they got him) will give you equivilnat production to nady playing FT.
Heck, Kapler would come close playing FT.
Oh i agree with you. I like Nady. He’s not a make or break player. He’s a nice compliment if you get him.
Not like Fatty on WFAN last season when the yanks traded for him and that stiff in the bullpen who they gave like 5 million dollars. Yay a situational lefty who can’t get out a righty. Sounds like the Mets entire Bullpen last season.
Anyways, unless your getting a TRUE upgrade, like Dunn or cough cough Manny, I’d tend to agree with everyone here and leave it alone or get Wiggy.
At least Wiggy can fill in at other positions. Even still you can play Wiggy at 2nd and bench castillo and still leave Murph in the outfield….. I’m just trying to think of ways not to play castillo at this point.
I’m not saying lets trade him.. I’m saying he’s only had 131 at bats. Mets fans were saying the same thing about Nick Evans, till he stopped hitting.
When and if Murphy stops hitting, i wonder what everyone will be saying then.
you cant seriously be comparing murphy to evans can you?
Tatis is a fossil, no reason for him to be on the team.
Sign Wiggy, trade for nady, dump Delgado and put Murphy at first base.
That’s a hustling no whining gritty ballclub right there.
Off Castillo, Delgado, and Tatis.
Get young, get aggressive, get a winning attitude.
Off Omar also and get Backman to manage.
