Perhaps the Braves are just driving up the Mets price but really have no intention of going after Lowe.

Let me see if I understand this. The Mets are willing to shell out $13 or $14 million a year, for three years (or a fourth under some option,) but would rather see Lowe sign with a division rival rather than spend $1 million more per year for the same time period?

Whoever said it above is right-- they won't get Ollie any cheaper, because ultimately someone will meet the Mets price, and it'll become an auction. Starting pitching is precious, and it costs.

Get Lowe-- he's not young, but he's a consistent 200-inning per year pitcher who keeps the ball down. Ollie isn't a kid anymore, he's unlikely to suddenly become a different type of pitcher, and the Mets haven't been able to get him to control the strike zone. Five innings per outing will put the same stress on the bullpen that we've been seeing the last 3 seasons, with resulting breakdown in the late season.

Not that anyone else even wants Oliver Perez- the Mets are the only ones with known interest, which is scary. That's what happens when a pitcher gives up 8 runs in 1/3 of 1 inning every 5th outing...there's usually not much interest from smart teams to pay him 14m/year.

This demonstrates how savvy Wren is, and how Omar is not very savvy. Who knows whether Wren actually has other SP deals available via trade, but he's smart to let Lowe's agent (and other agents) think that he is not limited to Lowe or any one pitcher. Omar/The Mets made a big tactical blunder by out and out "declaring" that their top 2 choices are Lowe and Perez- this has been out there for a month or two now. The whole world knows that, for the Mets, its "Lowe or Perez or bust!," which really hurts their leverage, especially the minute one of them signs with another team. At that point, the Mets will have zero leverage and the whole world will know they really want whoever is left between Lowe and Perez. Even if you're not interested in Sheets, etc., or in a trade for another SP, you should at least let everyone THINK that you are, so as to create a seed of doubt in the agents' minds, and to create leverage. Huge tactical error. The Braves have run circles around the Mets for years in that department...they are very smart/savvy.

He will work great off the bench.... In the minors on Rehab all season long.

If by any means O. Hudson is on the Mets Castillo won't be on the team. He will be bought out. They won't want him on the bench, as he can only play one position on the field, and it's not very good when he's there.

why are numbers like 1/9 and 2/18 begin thrown around for Hudson? is there any competition for him? i heard Nationals had interest, but then they didn't ... and nobody else. I don't think he is going to have a lot of options.

I wouldn't sign Hudson for any more than 2/18. He never plays a full season, and just isn't that good. He would, however, be a major upgrade over the scrap heap we have polluting the air between Reyes and Delgado now.
