Read: More, on the Citi Field Patch
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 12, 2009 2:37 pm

Last week, I put up a link and commented about the Citi Field 2009 Inaugural Season Patch from the Mets and MLB, of which I said, “This is one of the most basic, uninspiring designs I have seen in quite some time.”

Today, in a post about the new patch for Yankee Stadium, Peter Abraham writes the following to his blog for the Journal News:

“I’m tempted to arm my 3-year-old nephew Jason with his markers and see if he can do better. He certainly can’t do any worse… You have to love the Mets, the only team that would design a patch for their new stadium that doesn’t mention the stadium or show any images of it.”

What’s more, in a recent report for ESPN.com, Paul Lukas, author of Uni Watch, adds:

“Let’s skip the metaphors and jokes and just proceed straight to the simple, declarative truth: This is the worst sleeve patch in MLB history…  As usual, the Mets don’t need to look far to see how they should have handled this. All it takes is a quick glance toward the Bronx… For the sake of fans everywhere, please get a clue already.”

…i’m speechless… seriously, i am without speech… thanks, guys…

  1. VCarver says:

    Yeah, the patch looks bad.

But a grand jury is convening this week to hear “overwhelming” perjury evidence on the Rodiger.

So all is right with the world, lol.

  2. Protes says:

    It’s Bernie Maddoff(with your money)’s fault.

  3. NastyNate says:

I love this team, but sometimes they just make me sick to my stomach!!!

    • shinjosplints17 says:

Man did you get a look at the Yankees Patch! It wa like the first time I heard the Beatles, that is a patch..I collect all the patches and hang them in my den, this one will not be going up

    • m29w_12789 says:

I think it might be a lamppost flag outside Citi-field . I just can’t see this being the patch

  4. Nightlife says:

    So terrible.

  5. CaseStreet says:

Maybe they’ll get enough negative press to change the design.

BTW, tex4mets is no longer. Thanks to all that came on. Check out my new link.

  6. Constnza81V2.0 says:

It kills me that probably some marketing “whiz” making 3x what I make in a year came up with that idea but then again, we’re talking about a franchise that, if they won the World Series this year, they would probably just construct some additional homages to the Brooklyn Dodgers rather than hang up their own pennant.

    • nydre78 says:

Seriously. I thought the Dodgers moved to LA 50 years ago. Maybe the reason why Fred Wilpon runs this team into the ground is because deep in his mind he hates the Mets for not being the Dodgers.

  7. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

No Met fan should read anything written by Paul Lukas. That article he wrote about Piazza when he finally retired was disgusting and no Met fan should give him any unnecessary hits on his articles.

  8. fongulalou says:

The Wilpons should just be honest and have
another patch made saying”Thanks Bernie for
providing this years excuse as to why we can’t
just go out and sign what we need to win a championship”.

  9. NickA33 says:

They won’t change it because they’ve already invested money in creating the patch and incorporating it into the jerseys, merchandise, etc…

But the logo is terrible. The fact that someone in the origanization came up with THAT and the fact that another idiot actually OK’d it, is pathetic.

Like NastyNate, I love the Mets but sometimes the organization as a whole makes me want to vomit. Seriously? THAT was the best they could come up with? It looks like a 3rd grader created it….

  10. MetalMet says:

Not to defend the patch, but as far as the stadium name goes, I don’t think the Mets CAN write CitiField on the patch due to MLB’s regulations against advertising on jersey’s. The name of the field is pretty much an advertisement for Citi, so I don’t think they can include the name at all. Now, that’s not to say they couldn’t put a nice outline of the outside of the rotunda or some such.

    • NickA33 says:

Citi Field has a very distinct outline, they could have easily used that.

And, as far as the actual name of “Citi Field”, I was never a fan anyway. They should have either left it as Shea Stadium or gone to Met Life Insurance and asked them to sponsor the team.

      Unbelievable…

      • CaseStreet says:

        Met Life Field?

        • NickA33 says:

Met Life Field/Stadium or just Shea..

Why. Do you not like the idea?

          • CaseStreet says:

The name doesn’t sound good. Also, the Citi sponsorship is appropriate given they are one of the biggest employers in NYC. I doubt Met Life is. Maybe they were 20 years ago. Plus, you’ve got the Citi and City thing going.

          • TheIcon says:

Why in the world would you rename a new stadium the same as the last? And yes, I know the Yankees are doing that, but the new Yankee Stadium might as well be called Sony Field because their brand is going to be plastered all over the stadium.

The fact is, this is the way sports economics works these days. Why wouldn’t you accept a deal for $25 million a year for some corporation to put their name on your stadium. You think the people in Minneapolis are complaining their new stadium is going to be called Target Field? No because Target is an institution in Minnesota much like Citigroup is in New York.

Now was it wise for the Mets to do business with a financial institution at this time? Probably not, but nobody knew things were going to get this bad. Instead of people complaining about a silly name or the homage to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where is the outrage about the Mets and Yankees using taxpayer money to fund their respective stadiums. And they are still asking for more money!

          • zer09 says:

Well first of all, I really doubt that ALL possible investors weren’t contacted in hopes of getting the best deal. That includes Met Life, Metropolitan Museum, Orange bank, and whatever other companies whose name would constitute some kind of pun to the new stadium. The truth is, the naming rights were sold for the best possible deal, not with a pun in mind.

It’s true, the Mets can’t write anything that says “Citi” on their patch, but seriously, there has to be some sort of baseball-related design. Stick a bat or a ball in there somewhere..jeez…

          • zer09 says:

Icon: It actually states in giant letters “Turner” on the front of the new yankee stadium. From what I remember, the letters for “Turner” are even larger than the letters for “yankee stadium”…

      • nvrmor says:

        zer09
the TURNER, is the name of the construction company building the stadium. it will be gone by opening day.

    • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

The thing that kills– and Lukas hits on this point in his article– is that they DID design an actual, stadium-showing logo… and it’s pretty handsome, featuring the rotunda. The top mentions CitiField by name, but could easily be lopped off to make a square-ish, stately uniform patch. (The link to the logo is in his article.)

Only problem is, it’s apparently meant for STADIUM-SOLD merchandise only. I’m usually a big Wilpon defender (some would say apologist), amd this may just be one silly patch, but man… this is some Mickey Mouse sh-t right here.

  11. dominicanboy08 says:

    who cares about a logo….

    • fongulalou says:

b/t/w anyone see Duquettes 3min interview
on mlb.com with his thoughts on our need
for starting pitching? Maybe a Scott Kazmir
might help! Oops! Amazin’ how some of these guys have the nerve to provide ANY
advise to ANY TEAM on needs and how
      to fill them.

      • fongulalou says:

Maybe we could have gotten Mr.Abraham’s
3 year old nephew to draw a stick figure
version of one person giving another the
        Heimlich Maneuver.

      • jeff5361 says:

I hate when i hear Duquette or Steve Phillips comment on the Mets.
To let them is rediculous by MLB and ESPN respectivly

      • Cactus says:

Jeff Wilpon/the superscouts/Rick Peterson, all of which had more sway over baseball operations than Duquette at the time, made the Kazmir trade, and Steve Phillips brought in Wright and Reyes. I don’t understand why those guys get such a bum rap and Minaya is so ridiculously overrated. It’s bizarre.

        • bkfitz says:

Peterson didn’t have a hand in it. He liked Zambrano as a project pitcher. Leiter and Franco hated Kazmir and made him out to be a problem child. So Duquette traded Kazmir for the guy his pitching coach liked.

    • Genesis Does says:

I care, I was gonna buy a Beltran authentic this year. Now I wont because of that patch.

      • zer09 says:

I’m sure you can find a Beltran authentic without the patch if you’re willing to spend the $150…

        • Genesis Does says:

Its $240 for an authentic, and I wouldve liked one with a Citi Field patch on it. Maybe theyll sell that stadium only patch by itself and i can have a tailor sew it on the blank jersey

  12. wadehead9 says:

This is a truly uninspiring patch. Not that it will have any impact on my life at all. It’s still pretty pathetic.

One other thing, if I may come off as envious of the Yankees (about the only thing that makes me jealous fo them). I’m jealous that their home field is called “Yankee Stadium.” I wish our field was called something like that. Maybe something like Mets’ Park, or Mets’ Field.

Or we go all the way back…

    Metropolitans’ Stadium!

That’s got a pretty nice ring.

    • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Only problem (says the nudge) is that OUR team isn’t the Metropolitans– that’s the 19th-centrury club that preceded us (and the Yankees). The Payson-Grant-Shea team is just plain ol’ Mets. (Although it was thisclose to being the Skyliners, I believe.)

      • wadehead9 says:

        Oh, thanks for the correction.

It still had a pretty nice ring, no? lol

        • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Very tasteful. Almost too much so, considering the team, you know?

[I blame the patch-- and other nickel-and-dime PR fumblings (see: Willie firing last year)-- for my pessimism.]

      • damioneasley1 says:

The original names were between the Bees, the Burros, the Continentals, the Skyscrapers, the Jets, the Meadowlarks, the Skyliners and, of course, the Mets.

  13. C Dubb says:

Anything looks good on a winning team.

  14. Slippery Pete says:

Thanks for the update and all, but, serioulsy, who cares.

  15. fongulalou says:

If you link to the story, funnier is the line about
Joba’s new beard and how theres no chance
the yankees let him keep it.
Just another reason to hate them.

  16. dcatmets41 says:

Wow must be the offseason.. we are worrying about a sleeve patch.

How about we worry about them putting together a team with some heart this year instead. That we can complain about all day.. the patch is nonesense and ugly but ultimately means nothing.

  17. djbutler says:

    Two words: Mercury Mets

    • dave27 says:

I do believe you’ve committed several violations of Mets fans etiquette by bringing that up.

  18. Metfreak says:

Just goes to show you that the bargin shoppers (Wilpons) were out again. Maybe they saved a few bucks by not putting Citi field on the patch .Now let me hear some of you folks defend our cheap owners

    • dave27 says:

How would that save money? Did you see the part about corporate logos not being allowed on uniforms?

  19. CaseStreet says:

Well, I’d care if I was going to buy a authentic jersey, but since I got one with the Shea patch, I’m good for 5 years.

  20. Moses Magnum says:

Don’t they have focus groups, to determine whether the players or fans like the patch? I’ve seen patches on Army uniforms that look better.

  21. nymets85 says:

ITS A PATCH! I care more about the team not collapsing in September, than Jersey add-ons.

  22. alex242 says:

THE TEAM, THE TIME, THE CHOKE… oh wait..

  23. cyclone says:

Not really buying the whole “Well, they couldn’t put Citi on the patch idea because of licensing issues” excuse for this lazy design. They could have put a pic of the stadium facade on the patch minus anything that said Citi. This patch is just garbage. But what do you expect, this is the Mets, where Freddie and Co. think that being 2nd rate rocks. And not even comparing it to the Yankee patch, it would still be a garbage inaugural season patch in a one team town. It wreaks of laziness. Then again, this is the same ownership that believes it can win without a significant offensive upgrade to its lineup…it is going to be a long season in Queens.

  24. Iwant2wintheEast says:

Will this patch make us better than the Phillies? If not, then its a dumb idea.

    • zer09 says:

Can you come up with a patch that’s gonna make us better than the Phils? I’m sure everyone would sign up for that one…

      • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s the patch with the text of a trade that sends Fernando Tatis to Cleveland for Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Travis Hafner.

  25. fongulalou says:

Patch wouldn’t look so bad on a Ramirez
#24 or 99 jersey with Manny in it of course.
One more time, for those in the back,
    SIGN MANNY NOW!

  26. ProudMetFan says:

yikes honestly i dont think the wilpons are this low. bernie did it.

    • ProudMetFan says:

I just saw the Yankee patch, and, well, its frickin gorgeous.

This one looks like the Domins Pizza logo.

But the one that might be sold at the stadium is light years better. To tell ya the truth anything besides this one though (except the mercury mets) would be better than this sideways rectangle.

    • ProudMetFan says:

      Dominos pizza

  27. How bout a patch of a giant f%$^&in heart ..cuz thats what this team lacks..everytime my Phillie fan friends say it …I cringe bcuz they are right..this team lacks heart..PERIOD!

    • alex242 says:

      LMAO!!

johan, would u like it attached around the bottom part of the left shoulder as well??

  28. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

this is by far the dumbest thread ever to grace Metsblog.com….really really sad.

  29. keep it posi says:

It is a patch. Who cares?

  30. Cactus says:

this patch truly represents the halfazzed approach of the met organization.

  31. Fiya Minaya says:

Who cares about the patch? Can we get a real GM first?

    • darkstar73 says:

I agree, let’s bring in Cashman so he can make a bunch more signings like Pavano, and then they can be covered up by an enormous payroll.

      • NYMETSFAN718 says:

So you mean to tell me Omar Minaya does not have any “cashman” signings on his resume?

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

Other than Theo Epstien and maybe Bille Beane, a GM is a GM. There all the same.

        • darkstar73 says:

the point is, who else are we going to hire that would be better than Minaya? Epstein ain’t exactly available.

      • Fiya Minaya says:

I never said Cashman was a good GM. He doesn’t win either. Back on point- 3 out of 4 years = no playoffs. Minaya is an abject failure as a GM with the resources he’s been given.

  32. kisiox11 says:

Is it possible that the Mets can’t put Citi Field on the patch because sponsors are not allowed on the uniforms? Just curious. I think the patch stinks.

  33. LIMetfan74 says:

Unless this patch makes Castillo hit .350 and steal 50 bases Who cares?????

    • darkstar73 says:

so that’s what Castillo has to do to make you not hate him? Well then, why doesn’t everyone on the team win an MVP award next year?

      • zer09 says:

Forget MVP. The guy just needs to hit .300 and get walks like he did the first 8 years of his career.

  34. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    On the bright side,

At least Mo Vaughn received a number of HOF votes.

  35. Protes says:

Everyone’s going to be calling the stadium Sh**y Field so it makes sense that we have a sh**y patch.

  36. CharlieH says:

I sometimes wonder why I invest so much time and emotion in this clueless organization…

    OK EVERYBODY!

    “THE TEAM…THE TIME…”

    • darkstar73 says:

why does any of this stuff matters? I’m a baseball fan, i’m a Met fans, not a fan of patches, or slogans. I don’t need some patch, or some slogan to get me excited baseball, or a new stadium. This kind of stuff is for the simple minded and the non-baseball fan Met fans.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

YUP. They should all play in unadorned, identical, blank jerseys, because visual appeal has nothing to do with the enjoyment we derive from watching a bunch of strangers play baseball on a sunny day.

I.E., spare us the high-and-mighty Roger Angell I-love-my-pure-as-bleach-baseball BS.

  37. Zoe says:

Unfortunately, they’re absolutely right. Boo patch. How about focus grouping these things, Mets? I volunteer and have very good taste.

  38. RetireNumber17 says:

This team is Amateur Hour, ain’t it? Maybe the Wilpons will be forced to sell, in which case Mets fans would be the only people in the world who owe thanks to Madoff.

  39. the_other_matt says:

Best line about the Yankees Patch:
It’s a nice patch and if you look closely you can see a team official asking the city of New York for more money.

  40. casey s. says:

I didn’t read the whole thread, but aren’t there rules against using the uniform for advertising? Because that is exactly what saying Citi Field on a patch would be.

However, the fact that they couldn’t come up with a single, iconic symbol to represent the new stadium is pretty pathetic. Is there nothing distinctive about this new $850m stadium?

  41. VCarver says:

I hate Boras. He is holding up action (with collusion from his clients of course) so that fans start obsessing over a piece of fabric on a uniform. Ugh.

    • fongulalou says:

Hate is strong word especially for someone
only trying to do right by his clients.

      • VCarver says:

Hate comes from the way he lies.

There is probably no agent who hasn’t lied. But it’s an art form for Boras.

Oh, and don’t forget his leaking of A-Rod’s opt-out during the WS. He has no respect for the game.

        I literally hate him.

  42. Saul Goode 57 says:

What about a few years ago when the Yankees started their season in Japan…. They had a Ricoh billboard on their hats and helmets?

is a hat and or batting helmet not part of an MLB uniform…. or does the rule change because they played in japan….

and screw the fact if they indeed cannot put “CITI” on the uni….. do something substantial….
what about other teams that play in corporate sponsored parks…. have they ever had such patches with the name?

  43. mezz sec 7 says:

    i posted this in the last patch uprising, but felt it needed to be posted again. the following is a fan created patch that still follows the citi field branding(which i am not a fan of);

    arnor.ithaca.edu/~sgreenb3/comp105/patch2.jpg

looking back, the patch is by no means professional as im not an artist, but with touch ups has promise. my vision was to exhibit the distinctive arcs that will be present throughout the stadium as well as hi light the unique rotunda which is the defining architectural landmark of the new stadium. its not great, but if a freshman marketing student can do better than million dollar designers, there has to be hope! please take a look and i look forward to your criticism.

  44. godlylik says:

the new stadium has two patches, i wish i could post the new patch on here for you to see it, it’s pretty awesome. and the reason they don;t have the stadium name on it, is because it’s against legue rules to have a sponsor logo on your uniform, that sponsor being Citi bank… in the whole Citifield thing, it’s what comes wiht licensing rights… the other patch is way better then this one, unfortunately they are using this garbage, it breask my graphic designer heart

    • steadyeddie says:

can’t wait for the breath taking “Second Season” blue and orange domino for 2010.
      * sign Manny
      * retire #17
      * fia-Minaya
      * sell the team

  45. Volume11 says:

Bah, I honestly don’t care either way. And the Yankees patch looks exactly like last year’s All-Star patch. The Citi-Field patch stinks and the Yankees patch is too busy. Patches like that look out of place on uniforms. The Shea logo from last year was the best one as it wasnt garrish and didnt take away from the uniform.

That being said, I hate when journalists talk smack about players they couldn’t compete with in little league, let alone on a professional level. Honestly, blogging about how many pinstripes CC wearing is not only tasteless, but wholly unfunny. And I honestly doubt this cat would have the cajones to joke about that to CC’s face.

And finally, the Mets didn’t choke away anything last year. The whole season was a revolving carousal of who was in first place so citing the 3 1/2 game lead in September is misleading because it changed off and on all season. 07, hell yeah we choked, last year, no we got beat in a close race.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Watching some of the games in September when we got our ample arses handed to us by the Nats and Marlins, YEAH, we choked. “CHOKING HAZARD” would be a better text for our bland, industrial looking patch than “Inaugural season.”

  46. tarznatz says:

if you wonder why these things happen over and over and over again, look at the PR dept and the man that has headed it for the last 20+ years….

    Jay Horwitz.

Until he is shown the door, the Mets will always fail in this regard.

  47. mextache says:

How about a Wonderboy lightning bolt instead?

  48. Drucifer says:

Did the following in about an half hour. . . .

  49. Slob says:

    I like its minimalist style.

  50. cesium_133 says:

Whatever 65 IQ short-bus rider came up with a logo that looks like that should be banned from Madison Avenue forever. It looks like something between a Domino’s logo, as suggested, and a swipe-card to your room at the Domino’s Motel. Not only is it suggestive of the brand of pizza, but it has all the originality of a speed limit sign. No wonder these guys collapse every year… :p

  51. Starr247 says:

This is just another test for a true Mets fan. As usual, just when it seems the organization ‘gets it’, they turn around and give it to the fans. While lamenting over a patch is somewhat lame, you’d like your team not to have approved something so (fill in the blank here). Hopefully, this is not a harbinger of things to come for the approaching season.

  52. ChadBradfordSociety says:

    This is sad. Real sad.
