Starting Pitcher: Marlins and Pedro, Not so Much
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 12, 2009 8:41 am

On Saturday, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes wrote, Pedro Martinez and the Florida Marlins are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week,” according to a source.

However, yesterday, the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel both say the Marlins are not interested, with the Herald suggesting Martinez may have contacted them, because they were his ‘first choice.’

“Martinez could still be an option for the Mets, though the addition of Tim Redding could present an obstacle,” writes Anthony McCarron in the Daily News.

i believe martinez will wait until the top free agents sign, and then hope to sign a guaranteed deal…but, to expect him to jump at a minor-league contract, at least right now, is crazy…though, he may eventually need to consider such options

Last week, the New York Post reported Martinez’s agent and Omar Minaya would be speaking this week.

Give him a guarnteed contract of about 2 million to compete with Redding. Let him and Redding share the 5th spot with Redding the long reliever the week his is not pitching. That would keep Pedro’s starts down. You would basically be paying your 5th starter and a long reliever a total of 4.25 million and that should free up money for other signings.

    • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

This has to be the plan. As I said last week when people were going crazy over the redding signing was that it makes perfect sense because they can now bring back Pedro.

I cant believe that Omar chose Redding over Pedro, he has to be in the plans. Pedro for the 5, Redding as the long man and Niese in Buffalo.

      • therealsince86 says:

I would think so, and good thing about Redding is his splits are even. Thus he would be a good option for LR and would force Stokes into the ROOGY role.
Redding, Stokes, Sanchez, Feliciano, Green, Putz, Krod, not a bad pen at all. And please, no comments about needing another LHRP. Redding, Sanchez, Feliciano, Putz and Krod are all have good enough splits to face LH’s.

        • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

agreed, it would be nice to not hand Sanchez the last spot in the pen though, im sure Omar will hand out some minor league deals to relievers toward the end of spring to create competition.

I do think Duaner can have a big bounce back year, but im not ready to hand him a spot. That is a very nice bullpen though, especially if he can bounce back and Stokes is used properly.

          • therealsince86 says:

Sanchez’s spot is locked up. Stokes will have to compete more than he will. Check out Sanchez’s numbers. He just got tired in July and August. Not unheard of for a guy who has been out of baseball for a year.

          • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

I disagree. He had a solid April ERA wise, was terrible in may, aug, and sept. Mediocre the other 2 months, and his strikeouts and velocity were WAY down the entire year.

Id like to not guarantee Stokes a spot either, but I cant say that Duaner should be handed anything. He has to prove hes not afraid to throw the gas. We know Stokes isnt and can get at least righties out.

      TRS:

good morning, hope you and all mets fans had a nice weekend.. with that being said, i totally DIS-sagree wit u.. i rather now sign a garcia like who’s gonna come out as cheap as him..

      • therealsince86 says:

Garcia has pitched less innings than Pedro has over the last 2 years. I would think a motivated Pedro would do better than Garcia. But either I guess would work.

        • alex242 says:

My point is this guy as much as he “DESERVE” to get another chance so does garcia, pedro had a lot of chances to prove himself and he kept either getting hurt or getting bombed.. his time with the mets is just about done

          • therealsince86 says:

Same could be said for Garcia. The Phillies picked him up and he was terrible. The Tigers then picked him up and he pitched 15 innings in 3 games and was bad as well. Again, I am not opposed to him going to ST and earning a spot but he is not owed anything and neither is Pedro.

          • alex242 says:

trs, i get all that, i just don’t wanna se this guy here anymore.. i’m even praying redding does good..

    • Daaaaaaaaarryl says:

Good idea TRS. I was about to suggest a similar scenario, in signing Pedro to the same $2.25M, let he and Redding compete in ST for the 5th spot, and the other goes to the pen.

Though I like your idea because, as you said, we can keep Pedro fresh.

  2. BaysideBillyD says:

Maybe I’m alone here, but I don’t think that it is worth Pedro’s time to pitch for $2MM for a year. Meaning, he is already an exceptionally wealthy man, and for $2MM, I think he would stay home and tend to his garden.

    • therealsince86 says:

I think like others it’s about a legacy. He does not want to go out the way he did. Much more of a reason that he wants to come back to the Mets have 1 good year and get out.

      • roman411 says:

To tie together what BaysideBillyD and TRS are saying…

While Pedro IS a rich man and $2M probably isn’t worth his time you have to remember his level of pride and competitiveness. Pedro is not going to get too many choices this offseason. He’s going to have to take what he can get and if that’s with the Mets or Marlins so be it. I do not however think he will accept a minor league contract. Pride is one thing but that would be something he’s not like.

  3. DallasMetsFan says:

Definitely give him an incentive deal. I would love to see if he can adapt to a long relief type of guy. We can plug him in when one of our pitchers go down (which will be early May) and any doubleheaders. Vote for Pedro.

  4. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

Gotta Love It!! EAGLES OVER GIANTS BABY!!!! WOOO–HOOOO!!!!!

First The Phillies Smack The Mutts around, then we PUT YOU DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE…..Nice running game (4th and 2, 4th and inches)…

    Choke much New York????

    BBOOOOO–YAHH!!!

    • alex242 says:

      LMAO!!!!!

Wow.. a philly fan in a mets blog.. lol.. now i’ve seen it all..

      • Gland says:

LOL even better, talking football on a baseball site. Not only does not everyone care about that here, even the football fans might not be Giants fans here, given that there is more than one team.

        Weak.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why is it that Philly fans like to talk about the Mets choking? Doesn’t that imply that the NY team was the better team and if they had not choked Philly would not have won?

Shouldn’t they be talking about how the better team won instead of the better team choking?

      • alex242 says:

        talk about a philadelphia inferiority…

      • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

the city of Philadelphia and its fans are a complete joke. They take more pride out of beating NY teams than actually celebrating there own accomplishments.

The Eagles played great yesterday and Eli cant throw if there is a wind speed of over 6 MPH. Congratulations, once again the better team lost, but shut your mouth Philly fans, your city and all of its fans are despicable.

    • Daaaaaaaaarryl says:

One problem with your rant Philly Phan, the Phillies NEVER smacked the Mets around. In fact, the Phillies were nowhere to be found when the Mets played them face to face.

The Phillies couldn’t hang with the Mets on the field.

It was the Mets getting smacked around by other teams that won Philly the division.

  5. therealsince86 says:

I don’t think Pedro could adapt to the pen. He would have to be the 5th starter. However, as I said if you have Redding already on the team he can allow Pedro to skip a lot of starts.
If he only cost about 2 million you can always just throw him away if he can’t perform.

  6. The Ladies Busdriver says:

I could see him doing a decent job (somewhere within the range of 7 to 11 wins). I think this year would be better, because if you recall he was slated to be the number 2 starter last season, and all the talk during the offseason was how will he handle being the second fiddle to Johan…well it is clear now that he is nowhere near the second fiddle, third cowbell man, or fourth triangle player. He is merely a option of a lower variety. That makes his job easier when he is pitchng againt the lower tier number 5 starters in the NL…

  7. stickguy says:

For a redding sized contract + incentives (effectively a minor league deal!), bring him in and let him compete.

He did seem to still have enough “stuff” to get the job done (certainly to be an above average #5), so maybe the control issues were partly mental?

With luck, another off season to fully recover from the shoulder surgery will help. Get him in ST and see what happens.

One thing though. IMO, he is either going to be the #5, or nothing. Redding can get bumped tot he pen, but not Pedro. He probably would retire first anyway, since likely pride wouldn’t let him take the role, but even if he would, it doesn’t seem like he would be effective.

he also might need a new warm up routine, to avoid the 1st inning problems!

    • The Ladies Busdriver says:

Yeah the first inning became an unpleasant wrinkle to the season when Pedro or Ollie took the mound at times.

    • alex242 says:

well, to be fair we can say omar got us a #1 guy.. coz he was that in washington.. but to be honest, i think that he can be a 10 to 15 game winner here.. hopefully if our offense shows up and our bullpen holds up he can be good.. for a #5.

  8. RodKanehl says:

You guys are really in never never land if you really think a HOF pitcher is going to compete with a mediocrity for a 5th spot. You either offer him the job or you don’t bring him back.

    • alex242 says:

ok, so to make ur point really invalid go and sign maddux.. or mussina.. just coz they sure HOF doesn’t mean that they should be competing for a spot, although i agree wit u about either offering the job or not is time for some players to call it quits..i hope he doesn’t hurt his chances as a pitcher by pitching terrible again..

      • stickguy says:

no guarantee, but the expectation would be that he is the incumbant, so the spot is his to lose.

Semantics maybe, but it strokes his ego.

Also hit my point that he won’t go to the pen. Either he wins the SP spot, or he quits.

  9. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Maybe it’s just me…but I think it’s time to cut bait with Pedro…he hasn’t done anything for us the last three years…this is not a Smoltz deal where we really “owe” him for anything…I loved Petey when he was healthy and young, but I think his time has come….Give the kids a chance…Let Redding be our Darren Oliver…

  10. The opinion seems to be that Stokes is essentially guaranteed a spot in the pen. Based off of how he pitched last year, he deserves a shot, but let’s not forget that there was a reason this guy hadn’t made the Rays club before they twere any good. I like his stuff and I like his guts, and I’d like to see him on the team, but he isn’t guaranteed anything.

That said, if the above-discussed scenario of letting Redding and Pedro split the 5 spot is in fact true (which I must say I doubt due to it’s relatively unorthodox nature), I’d be 100% behind it. I’m just not sure Pedro would. He wants to win and prove himself to Mets fans, but he does have an ego.

  11. Daaaaaaaaarryl says:

Just going OT (since football was brought up) I seriously believe the NFL should add 2 wild-card teams to each conference, and eliminate the bye week.

It wouldn’t add any length to the playoffs, just 4 more games to the first week.

As a big football fan, I look forward to watching the top seeded teams play, yet when it’s their chance, they seem lifeless.

The bye week obviously is a factor here. As we saw 3 of the 4 teams with a bye lose. And all of the stats that the networks continued to show us about how this trend has been ongoing. It’s gotta stop.

This is very easy to do too. The Giants would have played the #8 seed the first week, and Carolina would have gotten the #7. After the first week, you’re right back on schedule with 4 teams remaining from each side.

More money for the NFL, more fans that get to partake. No more lifeless top seeds. Everybody’s happy.

Oh, and I’m not a Giants fan. So the old ‘You’re just looking for an excuse’ won’t work. :-)

    • alex242 says:

it seems u are.. if you check the top seeds lost becoz they killed theyselves wit turnovers..

      • Daaaaaaaaarryl says:

Of course it was the turnovers. But is that due to the bye week?

Regardless of anyone’s opinion, that hard facts and stats, that show that top seeded teams have been getting bumped off early, for several years now. And just this week seeing 3 of the top 4 teams get knocked off in their first game says alot too.

I don’t think this obvious trend can be just brushed aside and chalked up to mere turnovers.

I get your point, but all the top teams (save for the Steelers) just playing sloppy??

The Bye week has them off their mark.

        • alex242 says:

i doubt that, i had the titans winning it all. they got screw by the referees at the end.. but they had milions of chances to win it and didn’t ..

          • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

Giants lost because Eli Manning can not throw when wind is a factor. So for the next 10 years the #1 seed will not actually be an advantage for the Giants.

Also, why is it that everytime wind is a factor Kevin Gilbride decides to spit in the face of mother nature and tries to go deep once a series? Aside from the stretch run last year, Gilbride’s play calling has left much to be desired

  12. gowrightgo says:

Signing Pedro would be decent for the 5th starter competition but I still believe we need a new number 2 not 5.

To put some new pressure on the Lowe Boras group……I’d float interest in Sheets right now and have him in and start discussions on parameters of a contract.

At worst…you actually get a legitimate number 2 guy (although his injury history suggests he wont make 30 starts this year for us)

At best….if Lowe wants to be a MET as advertised…he comes back to the table with an urgency to get things done.

Why do I have to float ideas like this…why dont the mets baseball people see the value in creating some competition here for the #2 targets?

    • stickguy says:

I still like Sheets, if you get him at 2/3 of market value for a ance-like guy.

That way, if he makes 2/3 of his starts, you are spot on!

He is worth 15mill if you expect him to be healthy for 32 starts. So, if he only makes 21, and you can get him for 10 mill, then you are still paying the approriate $/start.

Neise can get the remainder, and make sure to have a rehab vet (like a Garcia) getting ready in AAA.

      • therealsince86 says:

See below, there must be more to the injury.

        • gowrightgo says:

I guess you are right. Sheets will sign a deal somewhere I am sure. So someone will get a formerly very good pitcher either on the cheap with great results for the price or they will get a bust that costs very little comparably speaking

  13. MetsFan4Decades says:

Redding and Pedro would give us depth. Something we were sorely lacking the last two years with injuries to Pedro, El Duque, Maine to the starting rotation.
We still need a stronger #2/#3 starter though. Lowe, Ollie, whoever….

  14. chachmaster says:

pedro’s aura on the club is definitely a loss but his physical skills are gone. he’s injured more than he plays and i’d consider the deal with the Mets as a general dissappointment.

cut ties and let him go. now that redding is signed there is no room for his mediocricy

ps – how can we let a divison rival steal lowe? make a move!

  15. Flushing_is_Burning says:

future first ballot hall-of-famer might sign a minor league deal?? I would just retire.

  16. alex242 says:

    GET BEN SHEETS!!

    • therealsince86 says:

Alex, my fear is being that no one seems to be interested that there must be more to the injuries than what we know. Either that or he is asking for WAY too much.

      • alex242 says:

Lol, i se mto think is the years he may be asking for.. not the money.. he’s worth 14 millions if u ask me.. but for 1 year only ;-)

        • therealsince86 says:

Alex, there is no team, (not even the Yankee’s) that would give Ben Sheets 14 million this season. If he gets over 10 million I will be shocked.

    • Sylow59 says:

I think one of the main issues driving the Sheets market is his Typa A status. Taking a gamble also includes losing a first rounder (or a 2nd round pick for the Mets). I would guess his main suitors would be the bottom 15, who they would not lose a pick, or the Yankess who would lose a 4th round pick (a*s*suming no other signings) on him. If the Yankess show no interest look for a Washington type team to sign him on the cheap then move him at the deadline for prospects, a*s*suming he is healthy. A bottom-15 team basically takes a 6M(?) gamble with the prospect of getting some prospects. I can’t see the Mets go after him given the quality / quantity of their farm.

  17. The Eephus says:

Oh the Pedro issue… I loved watching him for much of his career, and I would argue he is the most dominant pitcher in ML history when considering the era he played in, yet I also know he isn’t that guy anymore. So the selfish fan in me wants this- Sign Pedro to literally a 1 day deal, tell him they need him to pitch one specific date (a date that I will greedily have tickets for at Citi-Field). Then, for one day, it will be turn back the calendar night in New York. On this night, call it One Night Stand (oh cheezy wrestling references) we will all get to see the Pedro of Old (not old Pedro), where he throws 96 plus, with the dirtiest circle change and curve in the game and strikes out at least 15. Subsequently, he blows out his arm and his career ends, but it would all be worth it for that one night. Oh it is nice to be a jerk and dream…
