Rumor: Wright on Airplane?

January 15, 2009 at 18:45 pm · 133 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Update, 7:27 pm:

According to a team spokesman, David Wright was not on today’s plane that crashed in to the Hudson River.

Original Post:

I hate to post this, but I have been sent several emails from people in a variety of tri-state area newsrooms, including SNY and CNN, suggesting all are following up on an “unsubtantiated rumor” that David Wright may have been on today’s airplane that crashed in to New York’s Hudson River.

In any event, all reports indicate that each passenger survived the crash, which is great news.

Again, they are following up a rumor, which the Mets are working to confirm or hopefully deny, I am simply relaying that activity.

God bless. There were no fatalities, and I’m sure our collective hearts are with, and go out to everyone on board and their loved ones….

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 6:53 pm

No, Wright was on the 2007 and ‘08 Mets, which also crashed into the East River.

No one was hurt, folks. .. . .

ilKherubmagnifico January 15, 2009 at 6:58 pm

If Wright isn’t injured, and hopefully he wasn’t….that’s still a traumatizing experience…is it really prudent to count on his right handed production being 100% this year?….maybe they should sign Manny just in case?

hjhjhjhjhj January 15, 2009 at 7:07 pm

wow..youre cool !!

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Alright, buddy. We both apologized, and I sincerely regret that post. You rode in a little late on the high horse.

hjhjhjhjhj January 15, 2009 at 7:20 pm

sorry, your apologies were not posted on my computer when i wrote that…

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Jeeze….
Either way, thankfully all survived.

kendychavez January 15, 2009 at 6:57 pm

turns out i did have loved ones on that flight.

if this info came out before I found out everyone survived i think i’d have had a panic attack

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Dude, apologies then about tasteless joke above. Hope everyone recovers quickly from what must have been a frightening experience.

ilKherubmagnifico January 15, 2009 at 7:00 pm

my apologies as well for contributing a tasteless joke…

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 7:03 pm

It was the Hudson.

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Sorry — that was intended for the below comment.

kendychavez January 15, 2009 at 7:04 pm

that reminds me, some of the best cory lidle jokes were in the metsblog comments section immediately after it was reported. ‘he always had control problems…’

jabry4 January 15, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Oh, misread. Never mind.

metman04 January 15, 2009 at 7:02 pm

i thought it crashed into the hudson…either way im glad no1 was seriously injured…especially of D-Wright was on it

RodKanehl January 15, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Is David Wright a more valubale human being than the rest of the people. You are sick, and so is this blog for printing rumors about stuff like this. Thi site has become more and more like a gigantic garbage dump this Winter than a baseball site.

x-nady January 15, 2009 at 7:04 pm

That is one of my biggest fears. The Pilot and Crew deserve some sort of medal or key to the city to be able to land a giant hunk of medal on water without it breaking up. I have seen footage of what happens to a plane when it lands on water and one of the wings dips into the water…and it ain’t pretty. Mucho Kudos to the Pilot and it really is amazing not one person was hurt.

Clem Kadiddlehopper January 15, 2009 at 9:51 pm

When a plane crash lands in water the water can be somewhat incompressible.

Maineiac January 15, 2009 at 7:06 pm

The plane was heading to Charlotte North Carolina, where it would then fly to Seattle Washington.

I wonder why he would be headed to North Carolina/ Seattle, if he was in fact on this flight.

God bless the pilot, the stewardists, and everyone who is affected by this horrible event. Thank God everyone survived :)

cver January 15, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Glad everyone is OK! A lot of talk about overpaying for players this week. When you see how the pilots and crew performed, it puts that kind of stuff in perspective.

Chris02M January 15, 2009 at 7:09 pm

wud there be flights from charlotte to norfolk va?

Chris02M January 15, 2009 at 7:10 pm

1 of u shud call that us airway number asking about david

metsfan227 January 15, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Charlotte has a US Airways hub. Lots of people fly from NY into Charlotte because you have no other choice but to stopover there. Pretty much every vacation I’ve taken in which I’ve flown US Air I’ve had to stop in Charlotte.

Tommy2cat January 15, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I once circled Lake Oneida outside of Syracuse three times while the pilots tried to figure out how to unfreeze the wheels that were stuck.

A U.S. Marine was sitting next to me, coming home from Beirut, and he said, “I went through way too much and traveled way too far to have end like this!”

I told him not to worry, Jeffrey Leonard was on the plane. He said, “Who is Jeffrey Leonard?” I said, “He hits home runs for the San Francisco Giants. He’s got us covered, Bro, his nickname is ‘One Flap Down’.”

The wheel mechanisms thawed and we arrived safely on the tarmac with emergency vehicles present. From then on, I took Amtrak for my trips from LI to Syracuse.

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 7:15 pm

I can’t even imagine…..Just goes to show you how life can change in a blink of a second.

Darth Manuel January 15, 2009 at 7:13 pm

this just gave me the chills. sends good vibes to David and his family if this is true

JMPLAYA92 January 15, 2009 at 7:15 pm

If he was on that plane he will have to have guts to get back on a plane.

NYMetsTalk January 15, 2009 at 7:17 pm

If anyone is watching Mets Hot Stove – Omar is SO BAD at answering questions; I KNOW he cant speak of what he wants to do and all but the same answer is “ugh…. well–..ugh… yea.. ugh.. starting pitching.. and ..ugh well yea pitching is first and..” lol

at least he didn’t say “no” to abreu/dunn/manny..

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 7:24 pm

No, but he pretty much said he’s focused on SP, he can’t commit money until that’s settled – and once it is, he would only be looking at a bat for one year. Said something about FMart in 2010. So that pretty much lets Manny out b/c he’s not taking a one year contract….

metsfan575715 January 15, 2009 at 7:55 pm

1 year 40 mil with option of a 2nd in case F-Mart is not ready?

I think he will take it cause he will make 40 mil in one year and this is mainly about money with manny.

Clem Kadiddlehopper January 15, 2009 at 9:56 pm

In your dreams. :)

toomanyuniforms January 15, 2009 at 7:18 pm

There are already stories about the pilot all over the news. Ex-Air Force, like most commercial pilots. If only I could have that sense of control, judgment and calm for 10 minutes of my life, I’d be grateful.

Bacci January 15, 2009 at 7:19 pm

David Wright should be flying private.

NYMetsTalk January 15, 2009 at 7:19 pm

BTW it also appears Omar is very committed to Castillo for at least the start of the 2009 season.. Im pretty sure we can just about cross out Hudson or a Castillo trade.

uppertank January 15, 2009 at 7:19 pm

the geese didn’t survive :(

gipper82475 January 15, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Good riddance. Those Canada Geese are horrible poop-machines that pollute our golf courses and bring down planes.

I say, open Canada Geese hunting season!

phuck da phills January 15, 2009 at 10:21 pm

ah hahaha ha ha LOL

SantanaClause January 15, 2009 at 7:23 pm

there was a plane named after david in ‘06 I think. Are we sure it was David Wright’s plane or was it “The David Wright” plane

metsfan227 January 15, 2009 at 7:25 pm

The David Wright plane was a Delta plane.

BBmetsfreak36 January 15, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Thank god, dude. Can anyone say David Munson? Well, I sure hope not.

I once had a nightmare Jose Reyes died. If anyone was wondering, I and everyone else freaked out btw. Just sayin

ProudMetFan January 15, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I heard that everyone was OK and the pilots flew the plane with masterful skills. Peace out to those in the accident.
Peace out DWright if you were in it.

ajm3174 January 15, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Thank God!

mdemaio January 15, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Unbelievable job by the pilot…I have my pilot’s license for small craft – I can’t even imagine what it would be like to take a plane of that size down in a river with no engine…AND to avoid Manhattan altogether. Amazing.

Johan The Ace January 15, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Any truth to the rumor that the pilot was a Phillie fan??

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Update to this post says they confirmed he was NOT on that plane. Pretty common name – maybe it was another Wright….

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain January 15, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Eckstein to Pad on 1 year/1 million contact?

ESPN is reporting this!

Unbelievable if true! How does that happen and we have castillio for three more years and 18 million.

I tell you. For all those players who are seeking a one year contact and then will test the market, they are not smart. This economic downturn will only get worse in 2009, so next year market will be even worse.

Aquadealer January 15, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Interesting post so your saying Castillo’s contract may be a bad one?

Im suprised no one else has said that here.

Anyone else think Castillo’s contract was a mistake?

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 7:58 pm

umm………YESS!!!!!

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 7:58 pm

EVERYONE DOES

Aquadealer January 15, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Amazing

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs January 15, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Truly amazing.

gipper82475 January 15, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Amazing piloting skills by this guy. Water landings are very difficult – as it is easy to dip one wing or have it catch the water, causing a cartwheel and breaking up the plane’s fuselage. Sounds like this guy realized he couldn’t make Teterboro, and glided just above the GW Bridge and made a textbook “water landing” having the tail strike the water first to slow the plane a bit before the engine nacelles hit the water and act as huge brakes causing a violent stop.

Great job by what recent reports say is a very experienced former Air Force pilot who was a regional airline safety director and had even participated in crash investigations.

Kudos also to the crew and pax for a chaos free evacuation as well as a great job by those ferries and first responders.

Sorry for the long post – am an aviation nerd and working towards my private pilot’s license.

Mr North Jersey January 15, 2009 at 8:01 pm

From Minaya,

Dear Fans,
After last years collapse we decided our #1 mission was rebuilding bullpen.
Mission: Accomplished

Our #2 mission is strengthening the rotation. We added Redding but due to our Mission Statement: “Win Within Budget”Lowe got away. Never the less rest a-s-sured we still hope to sign Oliver Pereez, well at least Wolf, 2nd thought Garland looks good in Orange & Blue.
Mission: Pending

Finally if your looking for us to sign Manny or Hudson you’d best not hold your breath.
Castillo is a keeper and Fmart is a year away at worst. Our offense is the least of our worries.

We are sure to have Wright, Reyes, Beltran to give us another great year

What are the odds Church has another concussion?

Murphy will hit because he has to.

Schneider, hmm ok you have me on Schneider but hey, we have Castro.

So you see no worries.Mets in 09

PS – Make sure to pick up your 2009 Inaugral Patch while supplies last it comes with a free box of Dominoes pizza.

See You at Citi Fields.

steadyeddie January 15, 2009 at 8:07 pm

“mission accomplished”, eh?
where have I heard that before?
Bye the bye, not even the homer Astros want “Rocket” around their ST camp.
Poor guy!
Oh my guod, it’s roger clementens in the bosses box! Get me a bucket…

Airfeet January 15, 2009 at 8:23 pm

so depressing to know the team we root hard for doesn’t have extra incentive to make it up to their fans after 2 miserable collapses

Metfreak January 15, 2009 at 8:44 pm

The Wilpons should really thank the Mayor and NYC for the new stadium because as of now that is really the only reason why they would sell out all yr

Clem Kadiddlehopper January 15, 2009 at 10:13 pm

LMAO but how true.

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Omar did not write that (i don’t think so anyway)

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:08 pm

to eddie:
WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?

smockk January 15, 2009 at 8:09 pm

a little off topic, but who else is reminded of Reyes and Wright by the red sox homegrown duo of Pedroia and Youkilis? Having them both get locked down into long term contracts as the Mets young stars were made me think about the two pairs.

Which two guys would you rather have on your team?

Airfeet January 15, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Reyes and Wright by far. is that a serious question?

freubr01 January 15, 2009 at 9:35 pm

youk came from the phils I believe, not sure if he came up with them…just like ortiz coming from Minny…Bosox did good job of picking up another team’s trash and making it gold

metsfan227 January 15, 2009 at 10:02 pm

No..Youkilis was drafted by the Red Sox. He’s never been with any other team.

Slim January 15, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Until Davey proves that he can hit in the clutch and stop the “yes man” routine, I’ll take Pedroia an Youk…

hjhjhjhjhj January 16, 2009 at 2:02 pm

ummm….so ignorant…please look at Dwright’s stats (most notably RISP) and you will see what you just said about Youk to DW is moronic….

hjhjhjhjhj January 16, 2009 at 2:03 pm

oh and by the way youk is going to be 30 this season…not exactly young

hjhjhjhjhj January 16, 2009 at 2:06 pm

sorry meant to say Late and Close not RISP

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Reyes and Wright

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:13 pm

i’m not just saying that because i’m a Met fan

Mr North Jersey January 15, 2009 at 8:15 pm

thx 4 da clarification

Andrew January 15, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Orlando Hudson?

Bacci January 15, 2009 at 8:19 pm

“Knowing something about the topic, I cannot tell you how impressed I am with this pilot. There are two in flight emergencies that just scare me to death. The first, in flight fire. The second, engine out on take off.

The hardest thing to do is stick with the general rule, under your go-around altitude, to “land straight ahead.” Doing that in the water is just exceptionally hard psychologically and practically. The temptation is to try and turn the plane, while “low and slow” and that is just the kiss of death.

Maintaining the energy to get where you want to be and then bleeding it off before landing without stalling the nose into the drink is just a gargantuan accomplishment.

This pilot, and his first officer deserve medals, without a doubt.

Not only that, but, at least given the picture, it looks like the First Officer is still in the cockpit. That’s dedication.

This is also one of the ONLY successful jet emergency water landings I have EVER seen or heard about.

Perhaps Dealbreaker readers would be interested in throwing a few dollars into a little “Hero Fund?”

What say you, Dealbreaker readers?”

SantanaClause January 15, 2009 at 9:30 pm

““low and slow””

Minaya tried something like that only he called it Lowe and slow only the Braves came in and ruined it so I guess your right that that really is that hard.

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:21 pm

what about him, we probably cant get him because the mets would never bench someone that they’re paying as much as castillo. and no one wants him with his salary

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:26 pm

just for the heck of it:

current lineup:
Reyes
Beltran
Wright
Delgado
Church
Murphy/Tatis
Schnieder
Castillo

rotation:
Santana
Maine
Pelfrey
Redding
Neise
(wow, weak rotation)

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 8:26 pm

They’re not done yet with that starting rotation. Omar pretty much confirmed that tonight on Hot Stove.

Clem Kadiddlehopper January 15, 2009 at 10:32 pm

This is an unsubstantiated rumor from an unreliable source but I understand Fred Wilponzi is trying to convince Sandy Koufax to come out of retirement. :)

Johan4Cy January 15, 2009 at 8:30 pm

well yeah, i was just saying where were at now

fxcarden January 15, 2009 at 8:51 pm

Don’t worry……Omar’s idea of improving on that rotation is to sign Freddy Garcia……..

BxMetsdude January 15, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Did I hear Omar openly use F-Mart as a reason why he wouldn’t give a LF bat a 2yr deal?? good work, now if they don’t get MANNY, he just put 100% more pressure on a 20 yr old who hasn’t even gotten a cup of tea at the Major League level.

Here’s to F-Mart 2010…hopefully he’ll hit .330 and give us 40 HR :(

I hope hes just throwing a smoke screen up and will pursue MANNY or another big bat when the time comes.

Sign MANNY!

Hit The Weights Zeile January 15, 2009 at 8:39 pm

well hes not, hes serious bc hes crazy. anyone who doesnt think this team needs manny ramirez’s bat batting 4th in this lineup needs their head examined.

IWantManny/Krod4Christmas January 15, 2009 at 8:40 pm

anyone else see the comcast web site? not because im a mets fan, but this is ridiculous

MetsBlog.com reports that David Wright may have been on the airplane that crash landed into New York’s East River today. The reports have not yet been confirmed. Nobody was seriously hurt.

Our View: Despite sinking every September, the Mets third baseman managed to float against all odds on Thursday.

BxMetsdude January 15, 2009 at 8:46 pm

wow, we really need MANNY! First it was Cole Hamels and now comcast. End the choking…

biomarco5 January 15, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Could Matt organize an electronic petition for Mets fans to sign in regards to signing MANNY! I’d pay $10 more per ticket if it meant the team goes and gets him.

Why wont they go over the luxury tax, if ever there was a time to this is. Got to erase what happened the last two years, and sure Manny wont fix it but no one can deny the impact his bat has on our lineup. Even if all the question marks in the lineup falter Manny make up for it.

Get Manny

atrain311 January 15, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I’m not going to say who the Mets should and shouldn’t get, but if there’s something I wanted from this Winter it was to have a really different team on the field next season. Maybe it will feel different because of the pen or maybe it won’t, I don’t know. I just need April to be here already.

ae37jr January 16, 2009 at 9:58 am

I agree, this is irresponsible journalism. Implying that a high profile celebrity was in a plane crash just to get cheap hits to your site is despicable. The fact that this post is still here some 15 hours after it was proven to be rubbish tells the story.

lil pelf January 15, 2009 at 10:20 pm

so we are gonna wind up with sheets and pedro on the dl and minor leaguers starting games again right?

MetsFan4Decades January 15, 2009 at 10:32 pm

On Sports Night tonight, they quoted Johan as saying they should sign Ollie – ‘he’s gonna be a good one’.
An endorsement from Johan – one would think he knows a thing or two about pitching. Interesting….

ilKherubmagnifico January 15, 2009 at 11:02 pm

After watching hot stove tonight I know the Mets aren’t getting Manny. If they get Manny it will only be the second time in my entire life that I’ve been blind sided wrong. I’m disgusted. Really. I want to vomit…on Omar, Gary, and the Wilpons. That said, the Mets need to upgrade their offense, and the rest of free agency is garbage. They need to trade. BUNG HOLES SHOULD OF JUST SIGNED IBANEZ!!

The Mets need to upgrade at Catcher and I want one of either Magglio Ordonez, Lance Berkman, or Jermaine Dye. I’ll propose what I think is fair for each. I’ll start with Dye as I think he’s the most likely, then Berkman, then Magglio. Rowand makes some sense, but I’d rather try to flip him for Dye as Chicago has no CF’er…

WHITE SOX GET – Aaron Rowand, Jon Niese
WHITE SOX GIVE – Jermaine Dye

GIANTS GET – Luis Castillo, Eddie Kunz
GIANTS GIVE – Aaron Rowand, Eugenio Velez

METS GET – Jermaine Dye, Eugenio Velez
METS GIVE – Luis Castillo, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz

Might have to include Nick Evans in there somewhere…..
—————————————————————–
ASTROS GET – Wilmer Flores, Jefry Marte, Jon Niese, Nick Evans, Eddie Kunz, Luis Castillo, Brian Schnieder

METS GET – Lance Berkman, Miguel Tejada

Then the Mets could either sign Varitek, and lose a draft pick or Pudge….or trade F-Mart straight up for Teagarden.
——————————————————————
TIGERS GET – Wilmer Flores, Eddie Kunz, Nick Evans

METS GET – Magglio Ordonez
——————————————————————
I’ll tell ya…Berkman would look good in a Mets uni…the Mets have a lot of talent, Championship caliber talent, but they’re just missing a piece here and there….Wilpon should sell if he doesn’t want to win the World Series every year. I’ve never seen him put a team that looks like it could from the get go yet.

1)SS – Jose Reyes
2)3B – David Wright
3)LF – Lance Berkman
4)1B – Carlos Delgado
5)CF – Carlos Beltran
6)2B – Miguel Tejada
7)RF – Ryan Church
8)C – Taylor Teagarden

That’d compensate for Manny. Know what, I’d rather have Manny instead of pitching. I’d rather sign Manny, and go with the kids…Enough hitting alone will get you into the play-offs if you have Johan and Pelfrey…maine….and I’ll count on Johan and Pelfrey with that offense behind them to win any post season series….2 wins a piece. Bring it. SIGN MANNY!! maybe we can eke out Pedro too? Sign Manny you louses.

ilKherubmagnifico January 15, 2009 at 11:08 pm

I’m sorry, if the Mets signed Manny, it’d be the third time…but one time I sort of had an inclination eventually, just not initially and it was a doosie…

Aquadealer January 16, 2009 at 5:05 am

Dont sell yourself short judging by your posts Im sure your wrong a lot more than you think.

ilKherubmagnifico January 16, 2009 at 9:59 am

that’s really the best you could come up with? weak…

I said blind sided wrong…of course I’ve been wrong much more than three times in my life, but calculatedly wrong…

ilKherubmagnifico January 15, 2009 at 11:27 pm

adding Manny’s offense to the Mets bullpen + Johan Pelfrey and Maine is better than adding pitching and not addressing the offense.

stillbelieve January 15, 2009 at 11:44 pm

i really hope you dont believe all that bull you just wrote down.
how come everyone on this site just conjures these trades up out of nowhere and then believes that they are going to actually happen.
you guys play too much mlb2k8

ilKherubmagnifico January 16, 2009 at 10:02 am

If you kept a close tabs on the rumor mill, you’d know the guys I mentioned might be available.

Mingo January 16, 2009 at 8:04 am

You think like the geese that hit that plane.

Why would the Giants give away anything to get Castillo and Kunz as a throw in?
And why would the Astros trade Berkman for anyone?
And why would the Mets trade Flores for anyone?

And to all the Manny seekers. The Mets aren’t going to spend $25 mil a year as long as they have F-Mart. Who wants a 40 year old with waning skills when you can have a 23 or 24 year old with rising skills and then sign them to a long term deal?
Not signing Manny is the right thing to do. Dunn makes more sense if they can get him on a one year deal.
Also, the Mets would be wiser to wait to sign Holliday next year than to spend their money on Manny right now.

ilKherubmagnifico January 16, 2009 at 10:19 am

The Giants could use a 2B, and they’d want to clear payroll for Manny… I think they’d be interested in a deal revolving around a Rowand for Castillo swap….

The Astros are in a financial bind…that trade would not only clear cap, and give them a semi-competitive team still for this year, but that’s a tremendous amount of return talent. Trading Berkman alone isn’t something that I would think would interest the Astros greatly. However, adding Tejada to the deal I feel is too tempting for them to ignore. Maybe they’d do Tejada for Castillo and Schnieder straight up? Then we could go after Saltalamaccia or even Pudge.

We’d trade Flores to WIN the World Series. That’s what it’s all about. Flores will be awesome no doubt, but I don’t want to have Flores in a few years, and still be a piece or two away from winning it all like we always seem to be. Go all in now, and WIN ALREADY!!

If the Mets knew they weren’t going to spend on Manny, there’s no excuse for them having missed out on both Holliday and Ibanez. Game is fixed, and the Mets fans got the shaft.

writingitall January 15, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Hmmm..key words didn’t trigger anything Cerrone?
UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR?????

Shame on you….but then again you are a product of CNN, FOX and the other 24 hour windbag machines…..get it out don’t worry about accuracy, or anything else related to journalism…..

metsfan227 January 15, 2009 at 11:30 pm

It’s funny. I think this is a good example of the difference between blogs and journalism.

No other media outlet reported on this (non) story. None of the beat writers, not ESPN, not SNY, not MLB.com.

One beat writer posted something only after he had the whole story.

I guess that’s why journalists get so upset about blogs.

I like the idea of putting Sheets and Garland in our basket for 12 – 13 million for both combined, instead of Ollie for 13 – 14 by himself. I believe both pitchers are high reward and could do better than Ollie. Ollie is also a high risk pitcher. Maybe there will be some money left for a hitter.

THANK YOU KEVIN BURKHARDT

His comment during his interview with Francesa today when he says
I wanna say they were 2nd in the NL in runs scored last year, that might be the most misleading stat there is but if your there watching every game, you know that’s a misleading stat, their big problem is they do not come through in big spots not just the last 2 weeks I’m talking about the whole year

THANK YOU KEVIN BURKHARDT
THANK YOU VERY MUCH

For confirming what I believed I saw last season. A team that was not clutch and struggled in big moments all year.

darkstar73 January 16, 2009 at 12:43 am

why does no one realize that the reason the Mets offense was in so many “big spots” last season, and “didn’t come through” was because they were put in those spots by a bullpen that continually gave up leads. Seriously people, open your minds, look at facts, think critically, don’t believe this stupid hype that everyone spews. If you think about this all logically, it makes sense. The reason the Mets offense seemed like it didn’t come through in all these “big spots” was because they were continually being put in those “big spots” by the bullpen. Something most other teams didn’t have to deal with. Factor in a decent enough bullpen, and our offense suddenly looks good, like an offense that DID score the 2nd most runs in the NL. THINK LOGICALLY.

A voice of reason. Couldn’t agree more. Been saying same all along…

Mr North Jersey January 15, 2009 at 11:35 pm

BTW – Francesa made the best argument ever for Manny today if I ever heard one. That interview today he did with Burkhardt was so refreshing to hear especially when he made the argument about Manny in year two. Do yourself a favor and listen to it if you haven’t yet. It was on point.

VCarver January 16, 2009 at 12:14 am

I like Burkhardt. He’s a smart and savvy broadcaster.

But he’s wrong if he’s parroting the fat man and thinks there’s a problem with the core of the offense.

This is basically the same core that was here in 2006. Now it’s deemed a failure because the crappy bullpen flunked two years in a row.

Shame on any Mets fan who thinks that fat blowhard Francessa is a voice of reason. No matter what he says about the Mets, there’s usually a hidden ulterior motive. He’s never to be trusted.

Mr North Jersey January 16, 2009 at 1:26 am

Hehehe,
I love it so Fatman is the devil and any Met comment he makes has an ulterior motive. He is not to be listened to.

Kevin “Must” be wrong if he thinks Mets offense has holes because hey,

Delgado = MVP 2009 is a lock no way he will go into another season long slump

Castillo = comeback player of the year just watch

Schneider = he’s only here for defense

Murphy/Tatis = are a lock (rookie of the year?)

Church = He was awesome b4 he had concussion he’s sure to repeat those numbers again.

Delgado’s resurgence was a big reason we started to play well. Don’t fool yourself into thinking otherwise. Pray he carries that same bat into 2009

I hope all of the above comes true. I hope Vcarver is right and Mets offense will be tops in runs scored again in 2009.

WoW!!! Vcarver I thought I had issues I never took you for a conspiracy theorist.
Who knew???

VCarver January 16, 2009 at 8:23 am

hi jersey … yes, fatman is the devil incarnate. And a clown. Now, seriously, he cannot be trusted on anything he says about the Mets. If you as a Met fan have to cite the fatman to support your point then you are desperate.

As I said, Burkhardt is a great broadcaster but he’s simply wrong here if he’s supporting the fatman’s view.

The issue is NOT whether or not there are offensive issues/holes on the team. Of course there are! Every team has them including the Phillies, Red Sox and Cubs.

The issue is whether without a bat like Manny is there a serious problem with the core that will make them non-competitive this year. And the answer is a big fat NO.

So stop sweating the non-essential stuff.

Mr North Jersey January 16, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I see so now I’m desperate? OK… I am also sweating the non-essential stuff? OK…

I’m sure time will tell If my
offensive concerns are legit if roster remains the status qua.

Even though I don’t share your opinion in the meantime I will try to refrain from categorizing you as a desperate fan that’s sweating the small stuff.

methead January 16, 2009 at 12:24 am

why did we even post the possible David Wright on the airplane story? I never even for second thought it was true. What a dumb post.

Mr North Jersey January 16, 2009 at 2:39 am

Dark -
I don’t say you and even Vcarver are wrong about offense last year. I agree numbers back you up.

I also agree bullpen put too much of a burden for Mets offense last year asking for offense to come through time and time again.

I still say having sat through 2008 Mets had many lapses where bats fell silent in key spots.

Now I have to say look at the team as presently constituted

Reyes = based on past performace you expect him to give you another Reyes like year

Wright = based on past performace you expect him to give you another Wright like year

Beltran = based on past performace you expect him to give you another Beltran like year

Delgado = [ Issue#1 ] If he can bring his bat from 2nd half 2008 into 2009 expect him to give you another Delgado like year ( This is key Mets can ill afford for Delgado to go into a prolonged slump )

Schneider = [ Issue#2 ]other than a solid April in 08 what can you really expect from him? So long as he handles his duties behind the plate well Mets will deal with him

Castillo = [ Issue#3 ] If Castillo now 33 is healthy and can remain healthy all year long can he regain the form he had at Min that made him an an All-Star 2nd baseman?

Church = [ Issue#4 ] Same as Castillo will he play a full season? If so can he hit the way he did before his concussion?

Murphy/Tatis = [ Issue#5 ]Can you expect Tatis to give you same punch he did in 08? Can you expect that Murphy’s brief call up is enough to believe he’s the real deal in 2009? (Maybe they both were just lightning in the bottle)

I see 5 issues I believe they are all valid concerns.
What do all you fans that believe offense is not a concern say to this???

Please Please don’t tell me because we did it last year. Like that is the be all and end all.

Based on that premise Yankees should of made playoffs last year.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain January 16, 2009 at 5:54 am

North Jersey, I agree completely.

I even made similar posts in the past.

Mets offense is not a certainty.

I had issue going into last year for the same reason. Surprise performances by Church (preconcussion), and Tatis and Murphy masked the problem (and thank goodness Delgado had his miraculous turnaround).

At least this year, Delgado will be entering the season with the expectation of continuing his second half of 2008 play (as opposed to continuing his 2007 downward spiral).

WIth a Delgado solid all year (we hope) that should help anchor the top of the line up.

The fact is though there were a lot of juggling done at the end of the season. Granted that was when Tatis went down and Church was not in his preconcussion mode. Dont forget when the Mets tried to strenghten the top of the order, the back of the order was woefully non-existent.

Who could forget the Schneider-Castillo-pitcher bottom of the order which was so dismal.

The team in 2006 and poart of 2007 was so strong because there were decent batter in the 7th and 8th hole. This created opportunities for there to be men on the bases when Reyes came up, and he had his RBIs. If there is no offense in 6-7-8, then you lose the ability of Reyes to knock them in, which again.

Mets cant afford the dead wood at the bottom of the order. THey can afford it even less if the top of the order is not steller.

What is the projected line up?

Will Castillo be reinserted in the second hole?

Where will Wright be? Will Beltran remain in the 5 slot (where he was at the end of the season)?

To be honest, I love Wright in the 5 hole. I think he thrives there other than Delgados lack of speed on the basis, its a perfect place for him.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain January 16, 2009 at 6:43 am

If Eckstein only cost the Pad 1 million guaranteed, why didnt the Mets grab him?

Granted Castillo is an 18 million mess.

But if it would cost only 1 million to get eckstein, why not grab him… and just drop castillo. Why pay 2 million for Cora if Eckstein only cost 1 million?

Am I missing something?

Agees Catch January 16, 2009 at 7:19 am

Eckstein wanted a starting job.

Cora is a back up who can start.

Eck wasn’t coming here to back up Castillo

Fred isn’t paying Castillo to be a utility player

Until Castillo is traded, bought out, or is injured, he’ll be in the starting line up opening day.

I might consider batting Castillo 9th. For all but one at bat, he is a lead off hitter in front of Jose, getting on base at about a 340 clip. We do not waste as many at bats on him and his lack of power.

Agees Catch January 16, 2009 at 7:13 am

Thankfully no one was hurt on the plane. Kind of like a Stephen King story with a happy ending

stickguy January 16, 2009 at 7:42 am

couple of thoughts:

1) Of course the offense has questions. Every team does. But you can’t just look at (as-sume?) the worst possible scenerios, without considering some outcomes might be positive. Or most likely, some good, some bad (so they average out),

Plus, while guys can go down, other guys can step in and do a good job. So if say Church goes down, someone has to replace him, and they just might do better.

2) “innings eater” is is looked at the wrong way IMO. It is valuable if they pitch deep in a game, thus saving the BP (and logically, pitching well to get deep!) Just getting to 200 innings is fine, but misleading.

if a SP stays healthy and makes 33/34 starts, and hits an even 200, that is just about an even 6. But, if another SP has a DL stint and only makes 25 starts but pitches 170, that is closer to 7 per game, saving the pen.

The short way of saying the point is, it is another SP making up the “missing” innings, not the pen.

so a real long winded way of saying a guy like Sheets can be more valuable, wile pitching fewer innings, than someone like Garland.

stickguy January 16, 2009 at 7:44 am

Also, when are some of these guys finally going to sign? It isn’t that long until P & Cs, so the dam really should break soon.

That, and it is time for some big trades to start flying. Once the FA pool becomes crappy enough (and it is just about there, on quality vs. quantity), GMs will start trading to fill holes.

VCarver January 16, 2009 at 8:27 am

It’s Boras fault. He can hold up the market singlehandedly. I’ll give him that much.

I think the hitting market is being held up by Manny … and the pitching market is being held up by the Mets and Perez. I hope Omar moves on to Sheets, Wolf & Garland if Ollie plays hard to get.

wladair January 16, 2009 at 7:54 am

All i can say is that no one on that plane was injured and that is miraculous, the fact that David was not on that plane to begin with is a wonderful thing, that would have been a major tragedy. David Wright is ideal for spots 1-3 in the batting order because of his 1st inning production and his ability to work his way on base many different ways. His speed is ideal for either the 2nd or 3rd spot.

4JoeOrsulak January 16, 2009 at 10:10 am

Evans and Niese for Millz is very interesting. I think Niese by himself is comparable in value, so Niese and Parnell would be my counteroffer. (I like Evans better than Parnell and we’ve got lots of right-handed relief anyway.)
