News: Mets re-sign Argenis Reyes

January 20, 2009 at 9:36 am · 78 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets re-signed infielder Argenis Reyes to a minor-league deal.

Reyes hit just .218 with one extra base hit and a .259 OBP in 49 games for the Mets last season.

he looked so good in July, when he was at least making contact against righties, getting on base and flipping fancy double plays with Jose Reyeshowever, that was short lived… by the end of the season, he made Endy Chavez look like He-Man…

The Mets also signed 38–year-old LHP Tom Martin to a minor-league deal.

Martin did not pitch in the major leagues in 2008.

He had a combined 5.08 ERA in 94 relief appearances for the Rockies during 2006 and 2007, while striking out 56 batters and walking 34.

Bad deal. Both of them.

stickguy January 20, 2009 at 9:44 am

minor league fodder and roster filler for Buffalo.

Hopefully neither one ever gets a sniff of Citifiled (without buying a ticket!)

nostradamus January 20, 2009 at 9:49 am

whoop dee doo. now all we need is for omar to resign valentin, alou, and el duque. seriously omar, sign sheets + manny and you can go back to siesta.

Nate W. January 20, 2009 at 10:13 am

Well the Buffalo roster now has four lefty relievers in Collazo, Camacho, Fossum, and Martin. They can’t use all of them in AAA.

I see this being a rather open tryout for the last bullpen spot along with a number of righty relievers.

Wanny Backstra January 20, 2009 at 10:23 am

I think Collazo starts now. And Fossum might well start in AAA too.

Willie Randolph January 20, 2009 at 11:03 am

Collazo is not a Met anymore ,he is with the marlins now !

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 9:43 am

a 38 yr old and awful reyes…..i hope its just for depth and are not a viable option to be on the bench or bullpen

stickguy January 20, 2009 at 9:45 am

minor league deals. basically guys to fill out the ST rosters, and if they do well, get a spot in AAA.

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 9:48 am

hope your right stick…i dont need/want to see awful reyes up here again..but we got cora so i guess that stops that

Sylow59 January 20, 2009 at 10:43 am

the voice ‘o’ reason

BxMetsdude January 20, 2009 at 9:44 am

ARGENIS!!!! LOL

mets9268 January 20, 2009 at 9:47 am

Wow Argenis Reyes!!! Its funny that doesn’t even sound like Sheets, Perez, Garland, Manny or Dunn. Lets go Omar!!!

nostradamus January 20, 2009 at 9:49 am

bro, dunn is a LEFTY bum. we dont need that.

mets9268 January 20, 2009 at 9:53 am

He may be a lefty and he may strike out a lot but he does walk a lot, he does get over 100 RBI’s a year and he does hit 40+ HR’s a year. That is excellent protection in the lineup to hit behind Beltran or Delgado so they don’t get pitched around and see more fastballs.

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 9:53 am

i SENCOMD THAT. WHAT HE IS IS A STRIKEOUT KING

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 9:56 am

He is valuable because he will be cheap and he can match Delgado’s production when he decided to shut it down mid-season due to a flare up in his degenerative hip. Oh, you all forgot about Delgado’s hip, did you? Well, I didn’t – and I’M STARTING TO FEEL LIKE THE ONLY ONE.

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 10:01 am

SO YOUR ARGUMENT IS THAT DELGADO’S HIP IS GONNA FLAIR UP SO YOU NEED TO GET DUNN TO PICK UP THE PACE AND STRIKE OUT OR WALK A COUPLE OF EXTRA TIMES AND THAT WILL HELP US WIN. wE DONT KNOW IF cITI FIELD WILL BE A HITTERS PARK. sO DUNNS GAME IS ALL ABOUT THE LONG BALL. THAT IS A RISK IM NOT WILLING TO TAKE. i THINK OMAR MIGHT AGREE.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:03 am

jrg, where did you learn how to type, the inner-city community center?!

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 9:58 am

wasnt ryan howard the world champion a strike out king??

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:02 am

Nice one dirty…

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 10:03 am

YEA HE PLAYS IN A BAN BOX. PLUS DUNN AND HOWARD ARE NOT THE SAME PLAYERS.

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 10:04 am

i LEARNED AT YOUR MAMAS HOUSE.

kingman 26 January 20, 2009 at 10:06 am

Howard hits exactly half his homers on the road….facts are annoying, aren’t they?

mets9268 January 20, 2009 at 10:06 am

Take a look at some of the big hitters in the league. Take a look at their stats when they have another big hitter behind them and when they don’t. For example take a look at Ortiz. There is no question that his numbers are much better when Manny hits behind him. The reason is they can’t pitch around Ortiz and chance putting him on base for when Manny comes up.
If Dunn was on the Mets, who ever he hits behind would have much better numbers. Dunn may stike out a lot but he is a huge threat to clear the bases every time he comes to the plate. I think that he should hit behind Beltran and have Beltran hit behind Delgado. That would give great protection to both Delgado and Beltran and both of their numbers will be a lot better than if Dunn wasn’t there. Now I would rather have Manny but thats not going to happen. Dunn’s price is dropping and at least there is a shot that we sign him. This is how I would do the lineup if we had Dunn:

Reyes
Church(was awesome in the 2 hole last year)
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
Dunn
Tatis/Murphy
Castillo
Schneider
Pitcher

You can also have Murphy hit in the 2 hole because he is very good at taken pitches and you can also have Castillo hit in the 2 hole and move Church to the 7 spot so the back end of the order is stronger.

stickguy January 20, 2009 at 10:20 am

You do realize that you created an AL lineup with a DH, right?

If you insert Dunn, you need to remove Tatis/Murphy (although I can still dream that they remove Castillo and leave Muphy in!)

kingman 26 January 20, 2009 at 10:04 am

Dunn has 40 HR and 100 BB 5 straight years…that is a bum? And batting 2nd, between SH Reyes and RH Wright makes the lefty thing even more meaningless than if he batted 6th for us….

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 10:15 am

WHAT YOU GUYS DONT UNDERSTAND IS THAT HE PLAYED FOR REDS. HE HAD NO PRESSURE. THEY ARE USUALLY OUT OF IT BY MAY. HE HAS NO PRESSURE. DO YOU THINK HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE NY PRESSURE. AND PERFORM AT THE SAME LEVEL. EVERYONE THAT COMES TO NY HAS A DROP OFF IN THERE NUMBERS AND THOSE ARE THE FACTS. SO 40 HR ARE MORE LIKE 25 AND 100 RBIS ARE MORE LIKE 80. tHATS HOW I SEE PLAYERS THAT COME TO NY.

MetsLv31 January 20, 2009 at 10:19 am

He played for the Reds and had no support around him, so pitchers were less likely to give him anything worth hitting. If Wright is batting after him, pitchers will give him more to hit which will mean more bombs.

Also, whether or not Citi is a hitters park doesn’t change the fact that Dunn hits monster HRs.

kingman 26 January 20, 2009 at 10:21 am

No offense, but every post you have made on this thread is very silly. Ryan Howard hits half his homers on the road, Adam Dunn’s production after the trade last year was at his usual level (with the highest OBP of his career), Argenis Reyes may be the worst offensive player to ever wear a Met uniform, and your comment that “EVERYONE THAT COMES TO NY HAS A DROP OFF IN THERE NUMBERS” is your greatest hit, thus far.

Typing in all caps does not make silly arguments valid, even if you use poor grammar and cannot spell.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:23 am

JRG –

“Typing in all caps does not make silly arguments valid, even if you use poor grammar and cannot spell.”

Ha! See, I’m not the only one who thinks you are a tool!!!

Flushing_is_Burning January 20, 2009 at 9:52 am

Now, the team is complete. Play ball!!

guierllNO MOta January 20, 2009 at 9:52 am

hey, both of these insignificant signings are still better than

A. Bringing back Duaner, period
B. GIving Duaner almost 2Mil, and more or less guaranteeing him a roster spot with that kind of $$

I mean this is the guy that made Heilman look like a stud last year with his no velocity from the start and inability to pitch 2 days in a row.

Whats next do we guarantee Matt Wise a spot?

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 9:57 am

im with you for the near 2mil salary but i dont think anybody in the majors can make aaron look like a stud…
duaner-4.32 era
heilman-5.21 era

stickguy January 20, 2009 at 9:58 am

That’s the arbitration process.

At least give the guy a chance to show if he will be all the way back (or cloer to it) another year removed from surgery.

He did pitch well for a while last year, and I seem to recall him having decent velocity?

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 10:02 am

i agree stick. I just think he tired out but cmon the guy hasnt played in a year and a half. I think he will bounce back big and have a good year

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 9:52 am

EVERY TEAMS NEEDS PLAYERS LIKE ARGENIS REYES. WHEN HE STEPED IN DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON HE DID HIS JOB . YOU CANT ASK MORE OF HIM. HE IS NOT cASTILLO. NOW CASTILLO IS GETTING PAID TO DO A STARTERS JOB HE SHOULD BE CRITISIZED. A REYES SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT BACK DOWN WHEN HIS TIME WAS UP. IT WAS NOT HIS FAULT HE WAS KEPT UP IN THE BIGS. HE IS THERE TO BE THE INCASE SOMETHING HAPPENS NOT TO BE THE STARTING SECOND BASEMAN.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 9:54 am

F-%$# this team. Bunch of losers.

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 9:57 am

yOU DONT HAVE TO WATCH IF IT BOTHERS YOU THAT MUCH. wHAT HAVE YOU WON IN YOUR LIFE. iF THERE LOSERS. i MEAN RICH LOSERS. wHAT ARE YOU A POOR WINNER.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:01 am

Well, judgeing by your awful grammar (it’s “they’re”, not “there” champ) I would say I am a poor winner who probably makes more money than you.

And I watch because I have to. I was raised a Mets fan, and that is not something I can just turn off. So I do my best to vent my frustrations through immature outbursts.

As for you, you don’t know me, so go back to flipping your burgers and working on that GED.

jrg1397 January 20, 2009 at 10:07 am

i GUESS YOU HAVE A LOT OF TIME ON YOUR HANDS TO PROOF READ YOUR RESPONSES. BUT ITS OK i MIGHT HAVE BAD SPELLING HABBITS WHEN i SHORT HAND BUT i KNOW MORE ABOUT BASEBALL THAN YOU WHICH IS WHAT COUNTS IN THIS SITE.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:11 am

That is an interesting statement; however, you haven’t proven that you know ANYTHING about baseball on this site. All you have said so far today is that Adam Dunn is a bum. I’m still waiting for some incredible insights from you, Dr. Baseball!

This is too easy.

stickguy January 20, 2009 at 10:00 am

I’m down to thinking that Sheets, Garland and Abreu off the FA heap would end up being a solid finish to the off season.

It would make for a solid roster.

Anything to just get the off season over with please!

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 10:03 am

lmao im with ya stick… time for the wbc/st to start

nostradamus January 20, 2009 at 10:03 am

yeah, a solid roster with a third place finish

Teacherhst January 20, 2009 at 10:08 am

As I continue to read this blog, four years now, I notice that certain fans feel they have a right to spout off and threaten to not support the team when the GM doesn’t do exactly as they want .

First, most teams work within a budget. The Mets always have one of the highest payrolls in the NL. However, people attack Wilpon for being cheap.

I, as much as every Mets fan, recognizes the need for SP. The deal for Lowe went well above what we offered, both in years and dollars. No other team was willing to pay an aging pitcher 60 million over four years. Omar could very well be working a trade for pitching, especially if he questions the records of Sheets.

The Manny situation is not about money. There was a movie in the New England area about Manny that was released around the new year. This video was supposedly sent around to GMs. The reason Manny can’t find a deal is because no one trusts he will play hard. Do you want this on our team or players that work hard every day? While his offensive numbers are amazing, Minaya could easily sign Dunn or make a deal once the pitching situation is cleared up.

Overall, we need to calm down and let Minaya do his job. He knows their needs as well as we do and understands the need to put a championship caliber team on the field. He has the medical records and contact with the agents, not us bloggers.

MetsFan4Decades January 20, 2009 at 10:09 am

You’re just making way too much sense for some of the impatient, young bloggers on this site.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:12 am

Have you seen my pacifier?

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:17 am

In all seriousness, the fact of the matter is, most Mets fans do not trust Omar’s judgement. How can we? He has signed some really great players during his tenure, but has shown an obvious inability to get this team over the hump. Until the Mets win the division again, we will continue to doubt his decision-making. It’s just the way it goes in the business of baseball.

Aquadealer January 20, 2009 at 10:26 am

I guess by “most Mets fans” you are referring to the half dozen or so clueless whiners that fill this blog with the same tired, sign Manny, Omar is incompetant and the Wilpons are cheap posts that we have to read through everyday here.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:29 am

Yes, you’ve pinpointed it. Great job. You can go back to beating your wife now.

kingman 26 January 20, 2009 at 10:11 am

Thanks for the extremely wise and rational post.

Aquadealer January 20, 2009 at 10:14 am

You should know if you have been reading for years facts and reason should have no place on this blog.

Nate W. January 20, 2009 at 10:17 am

well said,

sign Manny!

Dirtysanchez January 20, 2009 at 10:17 am

well where the hell have you been for 4 years lol
its nice to read a rational post from time to time..well done

Nate W. January 20, 2009 at 10:18 am

Well the Buffalo roster now has four lefty relievers in Collazo, Camacho, Fossum, and Martin. They can’t use all of them in AAA.

I see this being a rather open tryout for the last bullpen spot along with a number of righty relievers.

I hope they sign a significant lefty reliever, and just let these guys go.

WHAT IS OMAR DOING SHOPPING AT KMART AND THE DOLLAR STORE FOR HAS BEENS AND NEVER WILL BE’S. OMAR HAS HIS CONTRACT EXTENTION. HE DOESN’T CARE NOW THAT THE BULL PEN IS DONE. OMAR, GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND SIGN SHEETS AND MANNY SO METS FANS CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT THIS YEAR! WAKE UP!

fongulalou January 20, 2009 at 10:45 am

Dude, This ain’t even KMart shopping.
Omars now in a Dollar General with a
Twenty Dollar Bill. Watch out!

cver January 20, 2009 at 10:22 am

FORMER MET Tom Martin, let’s not forget – tied for the best All Time Met winning percentage with a Met record of 1-0. Of course, his ERA as a Met wasn’t as pretty. Argenis Reyes is nice to see back, I suppose, although I would have rather seen him pick up Ruben Gotay (or both).

bob burket January 20, 2009 at 10:28 am

WHAT IS OMAR DOING SHOPPING AT KMART AND THE DOLLAR STORE FOR HAS BEENS AND NEVER WILL BE’S? OMAR HAS HIS CONTRACT EXTENTION. HE DOESN’T CARE NOW THAT THE BULLPEN IS FIXED. OMAR, WAKE UP AND SIGN SHEETS AND MANNY SO METS FANS CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT 2009!

Teacherhst January 20, 2009 at 10:28 am

I read the Padres need to get rid of a high price player to reach budget. Some of the names on the list were Chris Young, Peavy, and Adrian Gonzalez. We could pull off a deal by sending Delgado to Anaheim and then trade for Adrian Gonzalez to take first.

Andrew January 20, 2009 at 10:37 am

Who’re you gonna send SD for Adrian Gonzalez, though?

More importantly, if Anaheim wants a first baseman, what’s to stop them from just trading for Adrian Gonzalez rather than Delgado?

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:39 am

I don’t think the Mets will be willing to part with what SD will want for a player like Gonzalez. There is always a chance that they need to have a fire sale and the Mets get lucky enough to snag a decent play at a low cost.

Sylow59 January 20, 2009 at 11:34 am

What would you be willing to give for a 26YO Albert Pujols under contract (at 9.5M/yr) until 2011? Look at his road numbers.

Sylow59 January 20, 2009 at 10:48 am

Chris Youing took a comebacker to the head. Other than the obvious these things tend to mess with a pitcher’s head (no pun intended) in a way that is not good.

Take AGon out of PetCo and you get Pujolis

Take Peavy out of PetCo and you get Garland

Andrew January 20, 2009 at 11:01 am

Peavy has a 3.80 career ERA on the road, which isn’t exactly Jon Garland (career ERA: 4.47) territory.

Yes, Peavy had a much worse road ERA last year (1.74 at home, 4.28 ERA on the road), but a lot of that is due to an increased walk rate on the road, which is much more likely to be a result of the opposition than an indicator that he’s only a good pitcher at Petco. This is a guy who’s 28 this year and has 1256 Ks in 1261 innings for his career.

Just saying.

But yeah, Adrian Gonzalez is basically Pujols Jr. if you take him out of Petco.

Sylow59 January 20, 2009 at 11:29 am

The Garland comment was for effect. But he is closer to Garland than he is to Santana. Consider this:

1) Peavy plays in the best pitcher’s park in the best pitcher’s state (California).

2) Last year his splits were as follows:
• Games in California: 16G 109IP 6.8IP/G 2.06ERA 1.05WHIP .216BAA
• Gamse outside of Calif: 11G 65IP 5.8 IP/G 4.21ERA 1.42WHIP .249BAA

3) Games against Colorado and Arizona (combined .500 last year) his splits were as follows:
• Games in California: 4G 35IP 7IP/G 1.80ERA 1.03WHIP .202 BAA 3.09BB/9
• Gamse outside of Calif: 3G 18IP 6IP/G 4.00 ERA 1.33 WHIP .203 BAA 5.50BB/9

This is a small sample, but the pattern is nearly identical to (2).

4) He gives up over 1 more HR/9 outside of California (1.56 vs 2.73 and 1.40 vs 2.67 against Col/Arz)

5) He was 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA and a .286BAA against the Giants At PetCo. He did not pitch against them at PacBell.

6) He was 4-0 against the Dodgers, 1-6 against the rest f the NL West. Regarding the Dodgers his splits were:
• PetCo: 2G 15IP 7.5IP/G 0.60ERA 0.40WHIP .102BAA 0.60BB/9 0.50HR/9
• Dodger Stadium: 2G 11IP 5.5IP/G 4.91ERA 1.73WHIP .310 BAA 4.91BB/9 3.00HR/9

He has alot more BB/9 but also alot more HR/9 and BAA on the road.

If Citibank is close to Shea then it is largely neutral. He will also be pitching against the Phillies (2G at the Baker Bowl II) I think it is not a complete stretch to expect an ERA around 4.50 from him. And if I am clopse to being correct how will we (Mets, Mets fans, NY press, ..) when we’re paying him 16M/yr in 2011 for that production? Think Ed Whitson and the circus that ensued.

If we were to target anyone on the Padres it should be AGon, or even Giles for this year.

bob burket January 20, 2009 at 10:35 am

OMAR, DON’T EXPECT ME TO GET A WARM AND FUZZY FEELING ABOUT 2009 NOW THAT WE HAVE A. REYES IN THE FOLD. SIGN SHEETS, MANNY OR HUDSON AND THEN COME TALK TO ME.

Andrew January 20, 2009 at 10:36 am

YES. WORLD SERIES HERE WE COME!

bob burket January 20, 2009 at 10:38 am

AS FOR THE BLOGGER WITH REASON ABOVE. WERE YOU BEING REASONABLE THE LAST 2 SEPTEMBERS OR ARE YOU WILLING TO JUST EXCEPT ANOTHER CHOKE JOB?

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 10:47 am

Sign Manny!

CitizenSnips January 20, 2009 at 10:55 am

Matt you should just stop posting these types of signings. Obviously some posters around here don’t have the brain power to process the term “minor league deal”.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 11:00 am

Ooooooooooo very snippy! Is that where you get your blogger name from?! CitizenSnippy?! Hold on a minute, my brain hurts from putting all that together…..

CitizenSnips January 20, 2009 at 11:02 am

If you wish.

bobblehead January 20, 2009 at 11:03 am

Additionally, why do you even post on metsblog? You never say anything worthwhile or relavent or even significant for that matter. Your only intention is to make snippy comments towards others. Just an observation, but try baseball comments for a change.

rowjamie January 20, 2009 at 10:57 am

Signed Argenis Reyes? But Omar – I thought you said you were only focusing on PITCHING????

Andrew January 20, 2009 at 11:01 am

No no, I’m pretty much sure he said he’s only focused on pitching and scrubs.

DallasMetsFan January 20, 2009 at 11:37 am

Did we just sign our new starting second baseman?? Where did Castillo go?? Was his knees traded too? Cause he was traded to us without them

ProudMetFan January 20, 2009 at 4:35 pm

He isnt that good, but there was something I always liked about Argenis Reyes. I cant quite put my finger on it.
