Starting Pitcher: Rangers, Brewers and Perez

by Matthew Cerrone on January 27th, 2009 at 8:08 am

Last night on MLB Network’s Hot Stove Show, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said there are ‘rumblings’ that the Rangers and Brewers are interested in free-agent LHP Oliver Perez.

However, Heyman still believes Perez and the Mets will eventually work out a deal; ‘though there are no guarantees,’ he added.

Meanwhile, according to Heyman, ‘Ben Sheets and the Rangers have discussed the parameters of a deal,’ though teams continue to have concerns about his medical reports.

actually, some people believe the Mets have given perez and Scott Boras a weekend deadline to accept their current offer, or the team will re-adjust their target to sheets… i have never known the Mets to give a deadline, though, so i have my doubts here…

News: Mets sign Snyder and Switzer

by Matthew Cerrone on January 27th, 2009 at 7:59 am

Yesterday, the Mets signed RHP Kyle Snyder and LHP Jon Switzer to minor-league deals, and added them to the 15 other non-roster players invited to spring training.

Snyder, 31, pitched in just two games during 2008, but was 2–3 with a 3.81 ERA in 46 appearances for the Red Sox in 2007, though he was not added to their post-season roster.

For more on Snyder, check out Mets Fever and Mack’s Mets.

Switzer, 29, has made 68 relief appearances during his four-year career, during which he has a 6.11 ERA, while striking out 43 batters and walking 36 through 66 innings.

Switzer did not pitch in the major leagues during 2004 and 2008.

Quote: Jerry Manuel on Manny, WBC, etc.

by Matthew Cerrone on January 27th, 2009 at 7:35 am

Jerry Manuel was a guest on SNY’s Daily News Live yesterday, and had the following to say when asked if he would have a problem managing a player like Manny Ramirez:

“I don’t think so.  I don’t have a problem with people that produce in the form and fashion that Manny Ramirez produces.  We shouldn’t spend that much time in the locker room anyway, our job is to be on the field – and Manny Ramirez has proven that he is probably one of the best right-handed hitters of our generation.  To have a shot at managing him would be exciting for me.  I’ve had Albert Belle, Frank Thomas, tremendous right-handed hitters.  I would love to have the opportunity to watch Manny hit every day.”

Manuel said it is not his job to lobby management for players, he leaves that up to Omar Minaya – however,“Once that player becomes a Met, I get involved from there.”

He also talked about Luis Castillo, back-to-back collapses, and the World Baseball Classic, on which he said:

“I wish there wasn’t the World Baseball Classic at this time because the core players are the players I need to manage in spring training.  Those are the guys you want to make sure understand what you’re looking for and what you want… From the 23rd of March on, we’re going to have to do some things to get everybody in line.”
