Outfield: Manny, Dodgers, Manuel and Mets Fans

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2009 at 8:28 am

In a post to his blog for 1050 ESPN Radio, Andrew Marchand says, “Whomever you talk to in baseball – today it was an MLB GM and a prominent agent – they say that Manny Ramirez will end up with the Dodgers.”

However, Marchand adds, though he doesn’t think it will happen, he can envision Ramirez ending up on the Mets if Omar Minaya’s loses out on Oliver Perez and Ben Sheets, ‘because it would cause him to change course and look at his offense.’

Regardless, Steve Popper in the Bergen Record writes:

“Face it. No matter what Jerry says, no matter what I say, no matter what you say, Manny is not coming to the Mets. They didn’t pursue him other than a cursory look at the trade deadline last year and they have not pursued him this winter. They are going to spend some more money, but it’s not going to be on Manny.”

got itso, you’re telling me there’s a chance

actually, last night, here in case you missed it, i explained why i still believe there is a small chance Scott Boras has at least one last-minute talk with minaya about manny

also, i have a feeling the team may have miscalculated just how vocal their fans would be about manny… i listened to WFAN last night from 3 am to 4 am, thanks to my asthma and a cold, and every single Mets call was about manny… over and over and over again… manny, manny, manny… i’m not saying this is a reason for the Mets to change course, not at all, they should do what they see fit, but they may want to consider how they are spinning this to the public, especially if there is any chance ramirez ends up signing a one-year deal with the Dodgers, because, if that happens, i suspect most fans are going to lose it

By the way, yesterday, Jerry Manuel again told reporters he would like to add Ramirez to his roster.

Read: Manuel to give Reyes more Responsibility

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2009 at 8:15 am

Yesterday, Jerry Manuel was in Manhattan visiting the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, where he delivered food from City Harvest.

Manuel told reporters it is time to start giving more responsibility to Jose Reyes, to help bring him along as a team leader, according to an on-site report for SNY.

Manuel said he would like to see Reyes direct the infield more, calling defensive plays and positioning his teammates, all responsibilities he believes the young shortstop can handle.

“You can be 50 years old and have no responsibility so you never mature,” Manuel said.  “But if you have some responsibilities, then the maturation process takes over.”

To read more quotes from Manuel, check out the New York Times, where Ben Shpigel recaps the entire conversation.

By the way, according to Shpigel, Manuel said he does not intend to name a team captain, though he did specifically mention Carlos Delgado, Johan Santana, David Wright and Carlos Beltran as team leaders.
