Buzz: Manny Rally at 7 pm

By Matthew Cerrone on Jan 29, 2009, 4:13 pm

The buzz online is that a group of Mets fans, who organized through some message boards, will be meeting at Radio City around 6:30 pm, then heading over to the SNY studios for 7 pm for what is being described as a, “Bring Manny to the Mets Rally,” to take place outside and on-air during the network’s Mets Hot Stove show.

this… is… awesome… i’m not sure it will ultimately matter, but i love the idea and admire their passion…

…i also heard people may be wearing manny-like wigs, which would be hilarious

…i have no idea how many people will be going… could be five… could be 50… no clue… i will not be among them, however, as i had no idea this was happening until today… but, good luck guys… and have fun… and if any one takes pictures or video, be sure to send them over as i’d love to post about it tomorrow…

I live in SJ too, tough being behind enemy lines, which is why I want manny so bad.

I agree with the post above, I wish this had been discussed earlier, I’d of found a way to get up there.

is there anymore public events coming up in which there is an opportunity to hold another manny rally

Maybe they should take donation buckets with them to collect money to pay for Manny since money can be the only reason he is not a Met yet. Unless the Mets have decided they don’t need the best right handed hitting outfielder in the game today and he could not help the team. :-)

      Manny a clubhouse cancer??

he has more playoff appearences in 15 seasons than the entire Mets franchise has its 46 years.

T.O., Stephon Marbury, Jose Guillen, Ron Artest, Chad Johnson…those are clubhouse cancers…

      Manny is a winner…

      • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26
        Jan 29, 2009, 5:09 pm at 5:09 pm #

I sure agree with this oleo….those guys are truly clubhouse cancers, while Manny has never behaved anything like them…and while TO is really good, Manny is better than any of them too.

Marbury—what a joke! And on cue, as soon as he is benched, the Knicks start to rise—just as Minn, Phoe, and the Nets did as soon as they got rid of him!

He quit on his team last year. The Red Sox clubhouse celebrated when he was traded. he beat up an old man clubhouse attendant. There is no DH in the NL.

There is a reason why all of baseball, (outside of LA-(who gave Andruw Jones & Juan Pierre big money), is avoiding this guy. Think about it.

I honestly believe this will have more of an impact than people think. The Wilpons have a reputation for disconnect with their fans that they don’t deserve.

One of my favorite things about Omar is he genuinely listens to people, staff, fans, owners, family, players, to make his decisions. Time will tell.

How sick would it be if a couple hundred Met fans break their way into the studio and start demanding Manny live on the air, just going wild. Burkhardt if freaking out, Dan Graziano is running for the hills, Greg Buttle comes from Jets Extra Point in the next studio and joins in the rally. KB trying to calm down the angry mob. Jerry Manuel comes out of the woodwork to join in the with the Manny crowd, wearing a Manny jersey and a Manny wig. Whoooh. Funny stuff.

Perhaps in the short term, yes, but in the long term it produces the desire for revenge. I’m confident that the Wilpon family knows it’s best form of revenge on the “Coupons” faction is to keep the team in their family for generations to come. Be careful what you wish for.

I think the Rally is a bit premature. Omar needs to sign Ollie and Sheets or Pedro. Then he can figure out if he has money left for Manny.

Manny doesn’t have offers, except for the Dodgers. So he and the Mets can wait it out till b4 Spring Training.

All this does is allow Boras to say, “Your fans really want Manny. Just give us the 4/100 and you’ve got a deal.”

    Pitching first people.

    • GravediggerHebner
      Jan 29, 2009, 6:07 pm at 6:07 pm #

Case, why pitching first? Manny has 16 rings and a career OBP of over 1.000! You and I could be the 4th and 5th starters with Manuel Aristides (Onelcida) Ramirez in the fold!

      • CaseStreet
        Jan 29, 2009, 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #

Manny will have to bat 3rd and 4th if our starting rotation is:

        Santana
        Pelfrey
        Maine
        Redding
        Garcia/Niese

Putz and K-Rod will have 20 saves combined, all from Santana’s starts.

But at least we’ll get to see Manny being Manny!

  57. mistermet
    Jan 29, 2009, 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #

Pitching first? It’s not like you have Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, and Walter Johnson sitting on the free agent market. I mean what is Oliver Perez? He’s a headcase, a guy we failed miserably with over the past 3 years. I think you need to change the mix. I like Sheets more than him, but again- he is not Pedro Martinez ’99 himself either. I don’t see why we can’t bring in Manny before we get a pitcher- you know they’ll get another pitcher regardless. I’m tired of hearing the notion that pitching is the priority- just get the best players you can now or very soon- whether they be hitters or pitchers. I am surprised/disappointed that there hasn’t been more of a sense of urgency to turnover the roster after what was a 3rd straight collapse. All Omar’s done is been reactionary and addressed the (obvious) bullpen problem. I mean any of us on here could have signed K-Rod. They have shown no creativity, and now is the time to do that, especially with guys like Hudson, Varitek, Dunn, Abreu, etc., sitting out there begging for money. Even if we don’t get Manny, I think it’s imperative that you change the mix and change 2 or 3 of the starting offensive 8.

    • CaseStreet
      Jan 29, 2009, 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #

First, last year wasn’t a collapse, it was a pennant race. 2006, was a playoff loss one hit or walk away from the WS.

Second, reactionary would’ve been to give K-Rod and Lowe the money they initially wanted, and to have given Orlando Hudson the money he wanted while cutting Castillo. If that would’ve happened there’s no way we’re talking about signing Manny.

Third, pitching is the priority because it wins games, not hitting. Yeah, let’s give Manny 3/66 or whatever It’ll take to beat the Dodgers offer. Where does the money for Perez or Sheets come from? I guess we’ll go with Redding and Garcia at the end of the rotation.

Finally, changing 2 or 3 of the starting 8 costs money. What you think people are gonna sign for free? Are we trading Reyes, Beltran or Wright? No way! Will anyone take Castillo from us? Nope. Can you find a slugging 1B at Delgado’s price and who’s going to take him from us? Oh I know, let’s trade Church who is signed for cheap, plays great defense and is a doubles machine.

No, let’s fix the rotation, then we can worry about LF or C. Like you said, there’s a surplus out there. I’m sure someone will fall into our lap now or at the trade deadline.

But, maybe ur right, let’s just give Manny the money he wants and all our problems are solved. Plz.

So I just read that Minaya flew to the Dominican Republic to meet with Pedro??? Why?? This is not Pedro Martinez of 1999 we are talking about. I see this as a waste of time and energy, considering the urgency with which this team’s other needs need to be addressed right this minute. Make Pedro wait- he is not anything near a priority right now. I have no problem Minaya flying down there a month from now when the rest of the team is set, but this is a bit ridiculous. Come back Omar, and get on the phone to Boras and talk about MANNY.

Varitek is a natural leader, something this team hasn’t had since Keith Hernandez (well maybe Lenny Harris- but he wasn’t a starter, so it was tougher to lead).. The only reason other than “as-sume” or “as-sess” that I’ve ever had a post moderated was once when I cut and pasted a long piece from another website that had charts, graphs and numbered lists in it. I just cut out the charts and graphs and reposted and it worked.
