by Matthew Cerrone

Update, 12:35 pm:

“Meet on the North side of the site, at the plaza facing the old traffic circle next to Northern Blvd,” one of the event’s planner said to me on e-mail.

Original Post, 9:36 am:

On Saturday, January 31, at 12:00 pm, a large group of Mets fans are organizing a final farewell at Shea Stadium, ‘to share stories and take photographs of what is left of the ballpark… This is not for a funeral, but a celebration.’

According to an e-mail from one the event’s organizers, “There is no cost of course  – and the day will include a walking tour around the Stadium one last time, with stories, photographs and much more.”

Joe Bacci January 29, 2009 at 9:44 am

That sounds like a good time, i wish i had known about it earlier.

Ceetar January 29, 2009 at 9:51 am

If it wasn’t a funeral, they should’ve done it in October. when it was whole.

phukthephills January 29, 2009 at 9:55 am

the “bring manny to queens” rally is more important….everyone needs to go!!!

mets9268 January 29, 2009 at 10:00 am

On Sat everyone should start a big Manny chant everytime someone from the Mets tries to speak.

Ceetar January 29, 2009 at 10:03 am

Except Daniel Murphy.

cver January 29, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Hi Ceetar! Nice that I was able to meet you there during My Shea Goodbye!

Elastic January 29, 2009 at 9:59 am

If there is any stadium left to walk around.

sabermetrician January 29, 2009 at 10:04 am

Back to the earlier story. Why re-sign Pedro? Why not fork over a few extra dollars and sign Sheets? Do we really want to go to battle with the same team only having bullpen improvements? I don’t.

jtcuse44 January 29, 2009 at 10:04 am

What about the Manny Rally outside SNY studios today.?

Matt,
Please post the details for that if there are any….I work right across the Street and will gladly stop by if it happens.

Snort-It-Like-Keith January 29, 2009 at 10:05 am

The Paul LoDuca chant should start every time someone from the Mets trys to get a word in lol

Fudbutter January 29, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Mo Mets players, this was started a couple fo days ago on one of the boards (BB Fever maybe?) as an informal thing. Maybe it will snowball into something.

mets9268 January 29, 2009 at 10:08 am

Wow!! The Mets sold over 82 million dollars in bonds to complete financing on Citi Field. Thats 82 million that they didn’t have and now do, so I think that they should pony up and not only get Perez and Pedro/Sheets but also go get us a big bat. I’m not going to say that it has to be Manny, but anything less than Manny would be taking the cheap way out.

stickguy January 29, 2009 at 10:11 am

That is also 82 million dollars in debt that they have to pay back.

Kind of like taking out a mortgage when you didn’t have one before. Yeah, you get some cash, but if you don’t pay it back, they forclose on your stadium!

mets9268 January 29, 2009 at 10:18 am

I know that but you have to look at it in a few ways. One is that they have to pay for Citi either way. They now have 82 million that they didn’t have and would have to come up with if they couldn’t sell those bonds. So to take out 25 million for this year on Manny would still leave them with 57million. Manny will not only make the Mets more than 25 million(ticket sales, jersey’s, etc.) but next year they have a lot coming off the cap like Delgado so they won’t be in the whole for those years either.

I agree that you don’t want to take money out on your mortgage and have to forclose cause you can’t pay it back. But if your a homeowner and you take money out on your mortgage to put back into your home its a great investment. With a home you will get it back if you sell the house, but with the Mets you will start seeing the return less than an hour after the signing of Manny is offical when the orders for his jersey start flowing in and the ticket sales go thru the roof.

stickguy January 29, 2009 at 10:39 am

without knowing the detials, I as-sume that they needed the 82 mill to pay off current bills? They aren’t building the place for free! So they can’t neccesarily just divert 25mill of it to the Manny fund.

Snort-It-Like-Keith January 29, 2009 at 10:43 am

Yea, that is 82 million into the stadium as far as buliding cost. It has nothing to do with money to pay players and what not.

mets9268 January 29, 2009 at 10:46 am

Thats something that the Mets would tell you. My problem with that is if they needed that 82 million to pay current bills than the Mets are in serious trouble. These bonds are not part of the plan when they started building the new stadium. You know the money was there when they started building. They would have never been approved to get started if it wasn’t. So that 82 million should not be critical for current bills and thats why taking 25 million and putting it toward Manny is better than any investment that they can make with that money in this wonderful economy. If the Mets were to invest that money for their future, at best they would get 10% which is 820K a year. They would make at least that before spring training on Manny.

mets9268 January 29, 2009 at 10:50 am

I know that the 82 mill is set up for the new park. I understand that. All I’m saying is they had the money for the field before these bonds came into play. If they use the 82 million from the bonds toward the new park than that means they have 82 million that they planned on using and now don’t have to. Thats all I’m saying.

casey s. January 29, 2009 at 11:22 am

they needed it for cost overruns, i’m sure. so, no, the mets don’t have extra money. in fact, because of the need to raise additional debt, they have less money because now they have a larger debt service payment to make each period.

casey s. January 29, 2009 at 11:35 am

mets9268, 10% of $82m is $8.2m.

Cactus January 29, 2009 at 2:27 pm

actually, with all the tax breaks, foregone revenue by the city, and the citibank sponsorship – they ARE building the stadium for free.

Beautiful Addition to Your Baseball Library January 29, 2009 at 10:12 am

Where at Shea is the group meeting tomorrow?

NewYorkMetfanatic62 January 29, 2009 at 10:14 am

Stickguy, the Mets should make that money back. How long will it take? Who knows but if ticket sales are going as well as they say, they’ll be fine.

casey s. January 29, 2009 at 11:27 am

imagine you are building a house. you initially thought it would take $100K. But, after you built 90% of it, you realize it will cost $150K. But, you don’t have the $50K, so you borrow it.

Do you have an extra $50K now that you borrowed it? No, because you had to use that money to complete your house, which now cost you $150K to build.

Let’s a-s-sume you financed the first $100K, too. You were going to pay 5.0% interest only for 30 years. That meant you had to pay $5K per year for 30 years, then pay $100K after the 30th year.

Now, you have to pay $7,500 per year for 30 years and then pay $150K after the 30th year.

No extra money. Just extra debt, which equals less money.

boozermetsfan January 29, 2009 at 10:21 am

Go to the baseball-fever.com “Shea Stadium demolition thread” for info. That’s where it’s being organized.

Who cares! Post about the Manny Rally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shea guest broadcaster January 29, 2009 at 11:41 am

Great idea!

I’m a freelance writer for the Queens Ledger / Brooklyn Star Newtork of newspapers.

I would love to do a story on this event including fans’ reactions.

Unfortunately, I have to cover Hofstra’s basketball game against VCU, begining at the exact same time on Saturday, with former Hofstra great Speedy Claxton’s number being retired prior to the game.

Is there ANY way there could be a second event like this next week or soon thereafter if Shea isn’t completely removed after this weekend?

I would even say I’d do it again this Sunday if anyone wanted to, but I’ll be co-hosting a Super Bowl show from Manhattan.

Bad timing. I’ll be there in spirit on Saturday.

PLEASE let me know if another event is planned soon!

Thanks!

citifieldsforever January 29, 2009 at 1:22 pm

A simple ” I wish I could make it but I can’t ” would suffice.

Maybe they can stop the demolition and work around your schedule ??

I had no idea Jeremy Piven was a Mets fan

cver January 29, 2009 at 12:03 pm

This does sound really good. A non-commercial event for a change – something that will be pure in its intentions – real Met fans that appreciate Shea and the Met history meeting up – good to see that will happen – wish I could be there, but I live too far away – on the other side of the pond. Kudos to the organizers and have fun everybody!

NewYorkMetfanatic62 January 29, 2009 at 12:54 pm

get SNY involved ! evan roberts will be at the event.

enterkrod January 29, 2009 at 12:55 pm

cerronetheidiot January 29, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Oh Man…a gathering of MetsBlog enthusiasts. Should be a combined IQ of a chimpanzee at this event….

metsfan941 January 29, 2009 at 1:11 pm

anyone know where we are allowed to park there?

Clem Kadiddlehopper January 29, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I would most certainly attend but I am changing my mailbox on that day and I plan on having a wake for the old box that day. I have invited all the mailmen that delivered mail to me over the years and all those that have stolen my mail from the box. It should be a glorious day.

shea guest broadcaster January 30, 2009 at 12:42 am

What time will the event end on Sat?
