Mets RHP Tim Redding, during a recent interview on MLB Network’s Hot Stove Show, said:
“Tom O’Connel, my agent, when he got the phone call that I was non-tendered from Washington, he said he had a couple different teams in mind – and within six days the Mets called. I told him there is no place I’d
rather be then in New York. He said, ‘Well, I’ve got some other teams on the side. I’ve got Colorado, I’ve got Pittsburgh, Baltimore, let me get as many offers from out there as I can.’ I said, ‘Fine, I want to have some options, obviously, but New York is where I want to be…
“I’m from the state of New York. I’m from Rochester. I grew up a new York sports fan, I watched the Yankees, I watched the Mets, I watched the Jets, Giants, Bills, everybody. There’s no bigger market, and anybody who is anybody who plays a professional sport wants to play somewhere in relation to where they grew up and what they grew up knowing and I know New York sports. I was a New York fan, I know what to expect from them, and I know what they expect from me.”
In early January, the Mets and Redding agreed to a one-year, $2.2 million deal with incentives.
In 33 starts, Redding was 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA through 182 innings for the Nationals last season.
He underwent surgery on his left foot in November, but, reportedly, will be 100 percent by spring training.

Redding has good stuff. At times he was an Ace and at other times was a bum. If I am not mistaken he did great the first part of the year only to slip later in the year.
Sounds like Ollie
I think that Redding was a good addition to the team. My hope is that we pick up two pitchers and Redding is the long man out of the pen. If someone goes down, he will be a nice #5 for as long as we need.
he had a foot injury. Don’t know when it started to impact his performance.
We really shouldn’t say Redding has “ace stuff.” Of his four pitches, his 4-seamer is the best. it has good vertical movement and he commands it well but it has almost no horizontal movement. His out pitch is a curve that he has trouble throwing for strikes. His slider and changeup are just plain bad.
lets not make him into Ollie, hes not on his level.. he put up half a good year in his career and thats it.. im glad it was in 2008 though..
and he struggled in the 2nd half b/c he had some toe or foot injury that he had fixed from surgery in november
I agree. Perez has brilliant stuff.
How can anyone not like this guy being on our team after reading that?
Uhh, cause he’s not a good pitcher.
He had the Washington Nationals defense behind him.
true, but he’s a good #5 starter.
Well for one, this sounds very familiar. When the yanks picked him up a few years ago he went on and on about how he couldnt wait to pitch for them and how hes from NY and grew up as a YANKEE FAN in Rochester. So excuse me if I don’t get all teary eyed when I read these rehashed comments from him again.
(why the facisination with the yankees in western NY is beyond me)
I’m from Rochester, but I’m a Mets fan. It would make more sense if I were a fan of any of the following: Blue Jays, Twins (only because Rochester’s the farm team now), Orioles (Rochester was their farm team growing up), Indians or Pirates.
With that said, the heart wants what the heart wants.
Right on banana. I went to school in buffalo and about 99% of the people I met were yankee fans. They never went to yankee stadium in their life but always went to Toronto when they played them. So I always said to them, why arent you just a Toronto fan? Clevand was about 1.5 hours away too.
That being said, my main point was this statement of TR’s doesn’t mean much to me.
Mostly Western NY Yankee fans know nothing about baseball, and are just goofball fools who say things like “I’m from New York” when out-of-state, as if Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse were anything remotely close to being like the city.
We should invite him to the Shea Stadium wake this Saturday. :)
I was just as excited to read these quotes today as I was to see Redding make them on TV two weeks ago.
LOL!
Nice to hear….I don’t care if he is the #5 starter or long man in the bullpen….and I think I also heard him say it doesn’t matter to him either. Guy is just happy to be on the team, which is great. The 2.2 million probably doesn’t hurt either.
redding could have a better year, he started to struggle when he injured his leg. he could win 10-15 with this good bullpen.
i guess i’m ok with him.. #5 or long reliever.. that’s it.. if he is anything other than that i’ll be really pis-sed!!
if it is out of necessity then true, but if he pitches like aa #4 then that would be ok, right?
So he wants to be in New York, huh?
He actually pitched one game for the Yankees in 2005. Here’s his line: one inning pitched, he gave up four hits, four walks, six runs, all earned.
So his ERA as a New York player is an even 54.00.
He’s going to fit in perfectly in our bullpen!
Welcome back to New York, Tim!
How did Koos have 20 losses in a season?
I seem to recall a certain playoff game where Roger Clemens coughed up a bunch of hits and runs too. Does that mean he’s a crappy pitcher? Geez, one inning and you’re ready to write the guy off as a choker in NY. For 2.2 million, he is a servicable league average pitcher with a healthy arm. Something that has been sorely missed in Queens of late…….
Welcome to NY!!
So how long before Fatso says Redding Doesn’t Want to be a Met and Never Did?
he’s entertaing saying that the cardinals don’t stand a chance against the panthers… oh wait.. BURNED!!!!
f***** idiot, never even once that fat f*** said he was wrong about his prediction..
He likes Inge a lot though….
Francessa likes Inge?
you’re saying Francessa likes Inge?
He likes Inge a lot?
Francessa likes Inge? A lot?
He likes Inge a lot
He said he likes Inge a lot
I think he likes Inge a lot
Best Show listeners?
I don’t know about Best Show.. but Francessa had one show where he must’ve said 100 times that he likes Inge a lot. It’s very funny.. you can look up Youtube Mike Francesa and Inge
He underwent surgery on his left foot in November, but, reportedly, will be 100 percent by spring training.”
i wonder f this will be yet another ? mark to our rotation.. ?
He will only be a spot starter/long man….I read somewhere 2 weeks ago his deal has incentives for relief work and appearences
I always like hearing that guys love being in New York instead of being unsure about it like Jake Peavy. Mets need at least Ollie to fill out this rotation.
Heilman got moved to Chicago.
when did that happen? I can’t believe Matt didn’t post that? Where’s the link?
espn
I think he got moved couple days ago.
It happened yesterday. Heilman to the Cubs for Cedeno and Olson. And, Matt did have something on it, but I don’t think it ever changed to say the deal was final.
Heilman blew too many games for the Mariners…
Thanks for the update Al Roker.
Umm…The Bills play in New York? (sarcasm included)
Sometimes they also “play” in Toronto.
Toronto-Buffalo Bills!
Let us know when you find a guy who signs with a club and says. Man, i really wanted to be elsewhere. Until then, you’ve got nothing….
A-FRAUD
Beltran wanted to play for Yanks…
and A-rod for the mets… we’re even..
What??
A-rod wanted to play for the mets, he even said so 2 years ago, after he opted out he consider leaving but he loves NY, and after missing out on the mets he didnt wanna leave the yankees..
Alex – that was what is called a negotiating ploy to get teh Yankees to pony up more cash
But he wasn’t willing to give discount to the Mets. Beltran did.
uh… the mets were the highest bidder!
he was willing to go 6 years 99 millions to play for the yankees becoz of bernie williams..
in 2000 he said he wanted to play for the mets, until phillips blew him out of the water..
A-Rod wants to play for the highest bidder.
Guys:
off topic but read this,
“The Mets are focused on bringing back Oliver Perez, but even if they do Sheets would remain a great fit. The recent signings of Freddy Garcia and Tim Redding? Half-measures at best. The addition of Sheets (and Perez) would allow the Mets to slide Mike Pelfrey down to the fifth spot and perhaps use the lefty Jon Niese out of the bullpen. More to the point, the NL East figures to be another close race between the Mets and Phillies, and adding Sheets and Perez would be enough to make New York the favorite. It’s the Mets who provide Sheets with the best union of need, payroll flexibility, and contender status”
isn’t this great..
Where is this from?
I think we all agree that signing Sheets and Ollie would give best chance for winning WS.
from some reporter in MSN FOX SPORTS..
I guess I’m about 2 hours late, but I’m pretty sure his name is Dayn Perry on Fox Sports website.
I would like to know where this came from as well. I have heard many times that the Mets are interested in Sheets but as more of a fall back for Perez.
As for Redding, I love the signing. He came cheap, is great insurance and I wouldn’t even mind if he won the 5 spot in the rotation. Last year he won 10 games for a really bad team with the worst offense in the league. And he did that with a foot injury for a good portion of the season. If you are getting 10+ wins from your 5 spot you are looking very good. You don’t need your 5 guy to give you 15+ wins, but of course you wouldn’t turn that down.
Now back to Perez and Sheets. I would love for this to happen. Having Santana and Sheets gives you 2 aces and Pelfrey is on his way to be one with Maine and Perez both having the potential to do the same.
If I did the rotation I would do it something like this:
Santana
Pelfrey
Sheets
Perez
Maine
I did it this way for a couple of reasons. Santana and Sheets should be the 2 best SP’s and putting Maine between them will make it so you have at least one of them pitching in every series.
I have Maine 5th for two reasons. One is that you don’t want to have Perez 5 and Santana 1 cause that would give you back to back lefties. I would also do it cause the 5 guy throws less innings than the other guys and after his injury last year, this can hopefully save some wear and tear on his arm.
Who is this idiot saying to use Niese as a reliever, rather than starting in AAA?
“perhaps use the lefty Jon Niese out of the bullpen”
perhaps: means MAYBE..
I agree. The Mets have held him out of a lot of trade offers because they see a nice future for him on this team. Moving him to the pen will not only kill his value but it could kill his arm. He’s a lefty starter that can throw in the low 90’s with good control. If he doesn’t get the 5 spot in the rotation they need to move him back to AAA so he can continue to get better with his control and be ready to come up if we have any injuries.
FYI, Santana started his career in the bullpen . . .
Chase Utley would be a great fit too. This doesn’t mean they have any intention of pursuing Sheets. Opining that someone would be a great fit is a long, long. long way away from reporting that a team is pursuing that someone.
Um, it’s great but are the Mets interested? They haven’t even signed Perez yet.
If you disregard September, with his foot problem, here’s Redding’s stats:
28 starts; 9-8 record for a .400 team.
158.2 IP (5.2/start)
169 hits, 53 walks = 1.40 WHIP
103 K = 5.84K/9
88R, 80ER = 4.54 ERA
Compare that to John Maine:
25 starts; 11-10 record for a .550 team.
140.0 IP (5.2/start)
122 hits, 67 walks = 1.35 WHIP
122 K = 7.84k/9
70R, 65 ER = 4.18 ERA
Those stats aren’t all that different from each other, except for the K/9 number. If Maine is a #3 starter, which he was last year, then Redding is a #4. But I think that Redding would be at least a #5 for almost every team in baseball.
one pitch pony.. until he develops another pitch he’d never get past 5 innings..
Redding never had 15-10 sub 4 ERA season though..
Maine is a grinder. He is fiery and doesn’t seem to get rattled.
Francessa likes Inge a lot…
if you post that on more time i’m gonna blow my head out.. lol jk..
Francessa likes Inge a lot….?
Redding is fine as a 6th stater / long man. Better then some of the retreads we were forced to go to in the last couple years.
go through the #5 starters on all NL teams, then rank order them and tell me which ones are better than Redding. One caveat – they need to itch a minimum of 150IP.
Agreed. We needed to shore up the bullpen and back end up the rotation. Those were two gaping holes the Mets had last year. The bullpen was obviously taken care of, and having Redding/Garcia/Neise certainly takes care of the back end of the rotation.
If Redding is the 5th starter this year, i predict 13-9 with a 4.5 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.
Would any of you turn that down coming from the 5th spot?
I’m predicting 1-9 5.66 ERA. How do you feel about THAT?
No sir, I dont like it
or from the 4th spot for that matter
Out of all the smaller signings this year Redding was my favorite. The trades for Cora, Garcia. Mackoviak, and Sullivan I thought were stupid.
The trades for Cora, Garcia. Mackoviak, and Sullivan”
those were signing.. is that what u meant?
yea dude get off my D.
Unless you don’t mind looking like you have no idea what you are talking about I would try to use to term correctly
REdding is one of those guys who can look impressive at times and often goes through hot spells that make him valuable. I do a fantasy baseball league every year and he is always one of those players you can pick up on waivers for a few weeks while he is on one of his hot spells. I think he’ll do fine as a number five or any other role we need him in and I really like the fact that he wants to play here! Witha strong pen behind him we should get some good games out of him.
LMAO..
ok.. ok..
