Starting Pitcher: Long Shot for Pedro and Mets

According to reports from yesterday, Mets GM Omar Minaya met with Pedro Martinez in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

However, Newsday writes, “It was more of a courtesy to Martinez than a big sit-down to talk contract… Minaya was in the Dominican Republic on a prearranged scouting trip,” according to a person familiar with the situation.

Minaya told Newsday in an e-mail yesterday that he has was simply keeping in touch with Martinez, while adding there is nothing new to report on negotiations with free-agent RHP Oliver Perez.

Yesterday, Marty Noble of MLB.com categorized Martinez’s chances of returning to the Mets as ‘a long shot,’ according to a person familiar with the team’s activities.

In the Daily News, John Harper believes the Mets will only bring Martinez back if they fail to sign Perez, or fall-back options Randy Wolf or Ben Sheets.

Nevertheless, according to the New York Post, Martinez plans to use the WBC as an audition for major league teams.

As Adam Rubin of the Daily News put it last night on SNY’s Hot Stove Show, Martinez is most likely going to want a guaranteed contract – however, how can the Mets give him anything other than a minor-league deal, when they already have Freddy Garcia, Tim Redding and Jon Niese competing for the fifth starter spot.

Speaking of pitchers…

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com believes the Dodgers and Randy Wolf have resumed contract talks, though Wolf is unlikely to make a final decision until after Perez inks a deal.

we don’t need pedro anyway, let him go

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 8:21 am

oh thank god!

therealsince86 January 30, 2009 at 8:24 am

I am not going to lose sleep either way. IF they bring him in it better be nothing guarnteed. If they don’t, oh well.
There are plenty of 5th starter retreads to bring in to compete without going with Pedro.
For instance the previously mentioned Rich Hill. Who would cost us something like uh a AA player.

NYMETSFAN718 January 30, 2009 at 8:50 am

According to MLBTR, Cubs and O’s are talking deal for Hill.

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 9:07 am

how come that’s not us.. ?

NYMETSFAN718 January 30, 2009 at 9:09 am

Alex, that can be said for many of the other scenarios

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 9:13 am

718:

lol, i was joking.. u know.. haha..

Don January 30, 2009 at 8:28 am

great he was a bad move then and would be a silly move now.

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 8:29 am

uh.. completely disagree, and i mean… COMPLETELY..

therealsince86 January 30, 2009 at 8:32 am

Which part? You think he was a good move then?

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 8:34 am

come on TRS, the part in which he said he was a bad move then.. isn’t obvious? who as a mets fan wasn’t thrilled to have this guy here..?

therealsince86 January 30, 2009 at 8:36 am

Me, the years thing really bothered me. I thought we overpaid. But oh well. It was electric that first year.

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 8:39 am

and another thing, if it wasn’t for looper blwoing like 5 games of HIS alone he would’ve easily be 20-7… easily.. i even remember a game we were winning 8-0 in the 6th inning and the bullpen came in and blew it.. wow..

dave27 January 30, 2009 at 8:37 am

How can the Mets not give him any more than a minor league deal? Garcia is on a minor league deal, Niese has options, and Redding can be moved to the pen.

I’m not saying they should, but they certainly have the roster space to give him a guaranteed deal.

gowrightgo January 30, 2009 at 8:39 am

Look. All of us are busy checking in on the news of the day to see if there is anything happening. And it continues to frustrate all Met fans and likely most die hard fans of other teams that this market is moving so slowly. We just want to get some news that additions are coming.

I have sold and unsold myself many times on acquiring first Lowe then Sheets then Garland then OP. I never thought we would be in on CC and I wanted nothing to do with Burnett.

Bottom line is something will be done beyond the minor league moves that are happening now.

We will add another starter to the mix and a guy who either more proven or at least serviceable (OP).

More than likely we end up with Perez as that starter.

After that…I can not get my arms around the possibility of landing a bat for LF. I would do a Dunn or Abreu deal but part of me wants to keep that spot open for Murphy this year and for FMart in the future.

I guess what I am saying is I dont know if I want a bat right now for LF.

To me the best deal would be to ship out a guy (preferably Castillo) to open some space for a new bat.

I want Murphy to have a year to prove what he can become.

As to Pedro….if it is a minor league deal I could not complain too much but the reality is he would not be pitching in AAA. Some team will grab him to pitch just for the buzz he will bring to the team.

stickguy January 30, 2009 at 8:55 am

Moving Castillo is probably just a pipe dream. A good one however. Even though the replacement would probably not be much more effective, just getting rid of him would lift my spirits! And clear some salary room.

MeesesGlokmah January 30, 2009 at 8:56 am

Yay! Mets and Maine avoid arbitration and settle at a midpoint of 2.6 Million (according to MLBTR). Is this old news?

Derek January 30, 2009 at 8:57 am

I would take Pedro for a minor league deal only. Even though he has been healthy in a while, he is the reason people like Beltran and Delgado came hear. That doesn’t mean we own him a token contract this year, but I am all for showing “reasonable” loyalty.
As for an additional bat in LF: I am also good with Tatis/Wright and hoping the FMart makes it up next year. I would love to add Manny, but it sounds as if the luxury tax issue will prevent that from happening. The ONLY way I see Manny coming to town is if Omar traded away Delgado to make the room. That would put Murphy at first now, I guess????? I really don’t see that happening, though. Who needs a DH that bad that they are willing to pay $10 + million for it???

Derek January 30, 2009 at 8:58 am

Obviously I meant Tatis/Murphy above, not Wright…..my bad. I need more coffee

Agees Catch January 30, 2009 at 9:09 am

How many guys are we going to sign to a minor league deal? Is there still room for our real prospects? I hope Val Pascucci doen’t get squeezed out.

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 9:15 am

well, so far we sign, sullivan, alex cora, garcia, redding.. oh wait.. um.. hold on.. nah, all those guys are in MLB roster..

i guess our triple A team needed an overhaul as well..

stickguy January 30, 2009 at 9:24 am

I think val signed elsewhere (maybe the Dodgers). So expect to see him win ROY now!

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 9:26 am

how? don’t the dodgers got like a OF and loney to be their 1B

letsgomets09 January 30, 2009 at 9:14 am

Thanks Pedro. With so many of the same players coming back, the culture of the team needs to change. It’s time to move on from the Pedro era. Most of his contributions to the Mets weren’t on the mound.

bring_wally_back_man January 30, 2009 at 9:14 am

Why not bring Pedro back INSTEAD of Perez and use the money you save on Manny? You can backload the deal a bit with Wagner and Delgado coming off the books next year and use Murphy some at 2B this year before moving him to 1B next year.

I’d live with a rotation of: Santana, Pelf, Maine, Garcia, Pedro with Redding and Neise in reserve if I had a lineup that looked like this:

Reyes
Beltran
Manny
Delgado
Wright
Church
Schneider
Castillo

alex.422 January 30, 2009 at 9:17 am

if that’s the lineup i live with al leiter as our #5 starter..

sabermetrician January 30, 2009 at 9:17 am

Hit the Weights Zeile -
Didn’t mean to abandon you last night but I was in a rush. I want to resume our convo about greatest RH bat of past fifty years. I thought of two more obvious choices. Willie Mays and Albert Pujols. Back to Schmidt, you have to adjust for era, and not just OPS+, which is close, but Schmidt dominated his era, Manny is great in his era, but the third best RH hitter during his time. Schmidt led his league in homers 8 times, Manny once…I want to continue, but I’m at work so I have to be discrete. (By the way, I’m not an a-s-s like some people, I just want a good discussion).

sabermetrician January 30, 2009 at 9:19 am

Don’t get me wrong—this is a short list. Manny is FANTASTIC, surefire first ballot HoFer.

Don January 30, 2009 at 9:30 am

pedro was great in 2005. but he was a tremendous waste of money and dependance in the next three years. they missed a post season twice, barely. take depending pen pedro but of the equation, they are likely in the playoffs, considering pedro gave us nothing in 07 and 08, yet still impacted payroll. had they not spent on payroll, they had to spend on someone else, who almost automatically produces more. considering it was barely missed, whatever more that was, would have meant 3 consecutive seasons in the post season.

MetsFan06 January 30, 2009 at 3:36 pm

I don’t think Martinez and Wolf will get the job done like Sheets and Perez will. When Sheets isn’t injured he will be the second ace on the Mets. Perez has his on and off days. When he is on a role he is terrific. Martinez has let us down a lot this year and Wolf is just a tad better than Redding. If the Mets want to win they should sign perez for three years for 30-33 mill. Then she should sign Sheets for three years (even though the injuries, still three years) and 30-36 mill. This will guarntee their pitching for a good amount of time.
