I don't think Martinez and Wolf will get the job done like Sheets and Perez will. When Sheets isn't injured he will be the second ace on the Mets. Perez has his on and off days. When he is on a role he is terrific. Martinez has let us down a lot this year and Wolf is just a tad better than Redding. If the Mets want to win they should sign perez for three years for 30-33 mill. Then she should sign Sheets for three years (even though the injuries, still three years) and 30-36 mill. This will guarntee their pitching for a good amount of time.

pedro was great in 2005. but he was a tremendous waste of money and dependance in the next three years. they missed a post season twice, barely. take depending pen pedro but of the equation, they are likely in the playoffs, considering pedro gave us nothing in 07 and 08, yet still impacted payroll. had they not spent on payroll, they had to spend on someone else, who almost automatically produces more. considering it was barely missed, whatever more that was, would have meant 3 consecutive seasons in the post season.

Hit the Weights Zeile -
Didn't mean to abandon you last night but I was in a rush. I want to resume our convo about greatest RH bat of past fifty years. I thought of two more obvious choices. Willie Mays and Albert Pujols. Back to Schmidt, you have to adjust for era, and not just OPS+, which is close, but Schmidt dominated his era, Manny is great in his era, but the third best RH hitter during his time. Schmidt led his league in homers 8 times, Manny once...I want to continue, but I'm at work so I have to be discrete. (By the way, I'm not an a-s-s like some people, I just want a good discussion).

Why not bring Pedro back INSTEAD of Perez and use the money you save on Manny? You can backload the deal a bit with Wagner and Delgado coming off the books next year and use Murphy some at 2B this year before moving him to 1B next year.

I'd live with a rotation of: Santana, Pelf, Maine, Garcia, Pedro with Redding and Neise in reserve if I had a lineup that looked like this:

Reyes
Beltran
Manny
Delgado
Wright
Church
Schneider
Castillo

Thanks Pedro. With so many of the same players coming back, the culture of the team needs to change. It's time to move on from the Pedro era. Most of his contributions to the Mets weren't on the mound.
