Starting Pitcher: M’s could trade Washburn

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes the Mariners are looking to cut payroll now, and may need to consider trading RHP Jarrod Washburn, 3B Adrian Beltre or Miguel Batista to do so.

The 34–year-old, left-handed Washburn was 5–14 with a 4.69 ERA in 153 innings for the M’s last season, during which opponents struck out just 87 times and hit .287 against him.

Washburn, who has a no-trade clause, will earn $10.3 million this season, after which he will be a free agent.

He has not had a winning record since 2004, and has not finished a season with an ERA under 4.30 since 2005.

man, i didn’t realize how much washnburn has been struggling in seattle… i wonder if a switch to the National League would help him… if anything, he could provide leverage for a team negotiating with Randy Wolf, or Oliver Perez… however, to do so, the M’s would need to eat close to half that balance, to bring him down to around $5 million per season, and i’m not, at that point, why a team would trade a prospect to get him, when they could just sign wolf… though, he’s an interesting option

Batista will earn $9 million in 2009, after which he is a free agent.

During the last three season, he has made 26 relief appearances and 85 starts, while going 31–33 with a 4.85 ERA, during which right-handed batters hit .266 against him, while lefties hit .305.

no thanks.

This is a perfect headache for headache situation. Trade him for Castillo straight up – no cash involved. The M’s get a serviceable second baseman at half Washburn’s annual salary and we get another #5 guy who can be plugged into the rotation once Sheets/Wolfe get injured. And you add in Hudson to play second and now you’ve addressed the #2 hole in the order and can safely play Murphy/Tatis in left.

$10.3 mil for a number 5? Are you nuts?

Maine Man January 31, 2009 at 2:28 pm

for one year, and get rid of castillo, i’ll do it

Sylar January 31, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Terrible pitcher. No thanks

NYCESQ January 31, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Phils are interested in Ohman. Hey, we got Fossum.

tonym January 31, 2009 at 1:32 pm

He’s not an interesting option at all, he’s a TRASH option.

He stinks.

K-Rodclub January 31, 2009 at 1:40 pm

He isn’t even a TRASH option. Why would he brought up as an idea for a fit in these team?

casey s. January 31, 2009 at 1:39 pm

saying washburn would be leverage for negotiations with perez is like saying ryan church is leverage for negotiations with manny.

casey s. January 31, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Washburn? WTF?

K-Rodclub January 31, 2009 at 1:46 pm

If Wash’out’ is in the mind of Omar than he is better off with signing Pedro since he is a cheaper trash option than Wash’out’

TheWizard7 January 31, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Washburn for Luis… said Hudson with the 1y-7mil you save… You get out from under the Castillo deal, clear $17mil for the 2009-2010 free agency and Seattle saves $4.5 mil this yr…

zer09 January 31, 2009 at 2:01 pm

great minds think alike…

casey s. January 31, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I’ll just say this:

If Omar fails to sign Oliver Perez and instead trades (anyone or thing) for Washburn, who will earn $10.3 million in 2009, I would start a campaign myself to have Omar fired.

Actually, if he signs Perez and then trades for Washburn, I might to that.

$10.3 million for a garbage pitcher??? It’s on par with the deal for Castillo (maybe worse?).

Please don’t make me lose my mind.

zer09 January 31, 2009 at 2:03 pm

what would you say if he traded for castillo

casey s. January 31, 2009 at 3:59 pm

well, $10.3m vs. $18m isn’t terrible. but, in terms of this year’s payroll, it takes $4.3m away from the budget.

have to sign ollie for a castillo/washburn trade to not drive me crazy.

Maineiac January 31, 2009 at 2:25 pm

12 million of Castillo for 10.5 million of Washburn, as much as I dislike Luis, I would not do that trade.

Here is what Omar should do-
1. Sign Ollie, I do want Sheets, but I’m concerned that he will be under the knife before he plays this year.
2. Trade Castillo for Jose Guillen, Guillen would play LF. I know we want Manny but I think he will end up with the Dodgers again.
3. Sign Orlando Hudson to a two year deal (not four years Omar!) He is declining but he I believe will perform better than Castillo
4. Sign Dennys Reyes to a one or two year deal.

Now the Wilpons would have to raise payroll for this to happen but this team would be better for ‘08.

Lineup:
Reyes
Hudson
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Guillen
Church
Schneider

Pitching
Santana
Perez
Maine
Pelfrey
Redding

Bullpen
K-Rod
Putz
Sanchez
Reyes
Feliciano
Stokes
Green

Maineiac January 31, 2009 at 2:26 pm

When I said ‘08, I meant ‘09.

casey s. January 31, 2009 at 4:01 pm

it’s $18m of salary for castillo…

oleosmirf January 31, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Guillen is the ultimate clubhouse cancer. I’d rather have Murphy/Tatis…

K-Rodclub January 31, 2009 at 4:18 pm

gonna have to agree on that.

The_Fonz January 31, 2009 at 5:08 pm

why is everyone freaking out like its been reported omar is considering this? all matt did was report that washburn is on the market, no where is it said that omar was interested.

According the the MLB Trade Rumors piece, the Yankees were considering trading Hideki Matsui to the Mariners for Washburn. But, the M’s saw that as a way to increase their payroll by $2.5 mil, so they said no.

I think that Washburn would benefit from a move to the NL, too. Preferably to somewhere like San Diego . . .

I see nothing wrong with a Castillo for Washburn trade. It’s less money for a player we may be able to use. I just dont see the M’s doing it. It would add long term payroll.
