Starting Pitcher: Rangers, Sheets lose Momentum
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 2, 2009 2:15 pm

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes that talks between the Rangers and free-agent RHP Ben Sheets have ‘‘less momentum’ than they did 10 days ago,’ according to a source.

According to Rosenthal, “The Rangers want Sheets only on their terms,” the source said.

…as i wrote over the weekend, the buzz from baseball suggests sheets will not get a two-year offer from any team, because of concerns about his back and elbow, as well as his shoulder – and the fact that he pitched so many innings last season may actually be hurting his case

if i thought i could sign sheets to a two-year deal, worth $8 million per season with all sorts of incentives, i would do it…

…look, if he made just 20 starts, and missed two months or so due to injury, with the way he pitches, those 20 starts would probably be worth the $8 million, especially when compared to the so-so starts people get from guys making more than that…

…between Freddy Garcia, Jon Niese and Tim Redding, the Mets can make up the those missing starts from sheets, but while healthy they would have a very strong rotation…

exactly, sheets is a way better gamble. a clear #2, where as we just paid 12 mil for a number 3-4. ERRRRRR

    • LetsGoMets123 says:

Sheets would make that rotation NASTY
      Santana
      Sheets
      Perez
      Maine
      Pelfrey

Redding, Garcia, Niese on the back burner
      “NASTY”

  2. Philnym31 says:

Spend the rest of the dollars we have left on Sheets.
We could always make a move at the deadline for a left field bat ala Shawn Green.

  3. Yeah we have to get in there for Sheets, forget about getting a bat

  4. Steviefan84 says:

I would give Sheets a one year deal with an option for a second. To close the deal take Sheets out to Applebees, can’t go wrong there!

  5. nyleetch2 says:

Once Ollie is signed, the Mets should improve the offense. However, since it seems like Hudson and Manny are both out of the Mets reach price-wise, why not try to step in and pick up Sheets in addition to Ollie? If you can get him for 2 years $8 mill each, you still come in just around last year’s payroll, and well below the Luxury Threshold.

    • Steviefan84 says:

If the Mets signed Sheets along with Perez, I would be fine with the lineup.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

        Agreed.

      • mark4212 says:

I”m fine with the line-up now as long as Ollie is signed.

The way i see it is I know Manny isn’t coming, and i don’t particularly like Abreboo, and wouldn’t even be happy if they signed him. I don’t want to root for him after making fun of him for his entire career.

Dunn I do like, but he hasn’t even been mentioned to the mets once. Orlando Hudson would be nice, but with Castillo at 2nd i doubt that is happening.

So i would indeed spend the additiona money on Sheets if it’s possible. This way your rotation is one of the tops in baseball when everyone is healthy. Puts redding in the Pen, and you still have Garcia and Neise for injury replacements, or if need be even Redding.

Depth is the key. That’s what the mets haven’t had for 2 years.

    • NYCESQ says:

If they did this, then they can certainly afford to wait until the trade deadline for a bat.

    • casey s. says:

how do you figure they would be well below the LTT? with ollie making $12m, they have $6m left until they go over the cap?

      • therealsince86 says:

No where near the cap of 165 million +

        • casey s. says:

          The cap is $162m.

The Mets with Ollie and Garcia (at $1.5m) are at $156.4m. This is Luxury Tax Payroll, not regular payroll. There is a huge difference.

          - $11m for player benefits.
          - 40-man roster (that means 15 more guys) included
          - Wagner, Schoe included
          - average annual salary + signing bonus for each player with multi-year deals

They are somewhere around $6-8 million from the cap.

          • nyleetch2 says:

well i dont know the specifics of the luxury tax rules well enough to debate you on this. you may be right, you may not be.

          • casey s. says:

trust me, i’ll be working late tonight because i spent most of the morning confirming how it works and putting together a spreadsheet to adheres to the rules.

      • nyleetch2 says:

according to the post earlier in the day about the mets payroll – they would be around $135 mill after signing Ollie. Last year’s payroll was 143 and the luxury tax threshhold is $160. So even if you added another $8-10 mill on top of the $135, and even if you counted those salaries like Freddy Garcia which only go on the books if he breaks the majors and his incentives, youre still below $160.

        • casey s. says:

you are not understanding how the lux payroll works. please read my post just above. it’s not as simple as just adding salaries together.

  6. biomarco5 says:

    Hey guys,

    Manny Rally Thurs, takers?

  7. enterkrod says:

i wouldnt…they sign sheets..thats stupid..they might as well have gone with sheets to begin with…we need an upgrade to the lineup

    • mark4212 says:

Why, what did being the #2 scoring team in the NL last year get US?

89 wins and nothing to show for it. Pitching wins in baseball. The Mets have more then enough offense. If they finished in the bottom half in the league in Runs. Yes the offense would need improvement. But it was #2, #3 and #5 the last 3 years.

      • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

The EXACT SAME offense with our new pen will look a lot better this year….

  8. Steviefan84 says:

It is being reported that Oliver Perez is signed to a 3 year, 36 mil contract with no option.

  9. CaseStreet says:

Sheets could be the next Carl Pavano. He should take a one year offer and prove himself.

  10. Philnym31 says:

You always take the pitching, anytime you can get it.

  11. BBmetsfreak36 says:

Sheets and Ollie would be amazing and completly solidify the rotation and help the bull-pen as well. He was a true ace and even at worst only makes 2/3 of his starts. Say you pay an ace 12 million that is almost a lock to give you 30+ starts, give Sheets 2/3 that for a projected amount of starts with hopes for more given his history.
    Sheets+Ollie+Dunn/Abreu= 24-28 million

    95 wins

  12. tonyatlas44 says:

I’d love to have Manny, but a starting 5 of Johan, Sheets, Big Pelf, Ollie, and Maine is pretty killer.

  13. MetsFan4Decades says:

Just an FYI in case anyone is interested….

The Vegas odds/lines currently have the Mets as favorites in the NL East approximately 5 points over the second place Phillies.
They have the Mets under .5/ties/over.5 with the Cubs for the NLC.
Unfortunately, they have the Yankees as the odds on favorites for the WS…

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

Yeah, well as many said the last couple years. The Mets always look the best in february. Then look what happened. Let the season play out. But I trust Omar, he’s the professional.

    • casey s. says:

when was the last time the yankees were not the favorite in vegas to win the WS?

  14. Peter says:

If we could snag Sheets on a 1 year plus option deal, that would be huge!

I really didn’t think OP & Sheets were possible (I preferred Sheets & Garland), but who knows?

    Santana
    Sheets
    Pelfrey
    OP
    Maine

With K-Rod and Putz in the ‘pen?

    yikes!

  15. Peter says:

    heh, heh . . . Putz n’ Rod . . . heh, heh

  16. therealsince86 says:

I agree about getting Sheets for 2 years 16 million. That would be great.
Then at the deadline you can always bring in a hitter cheaper than you can a pitcher. If Murphy or Church are not working out then go get someone from the Tigers. I am sure they will have about 5 players that they will need to move.
Seriously, do you think Oswalt or Lee would cost more at the deadline? Peavy or Magglio Ordnez?

  17. Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

With Rocky Cherry as long man?

I see a sequel to Boogie Nights here…..

  18. If/when he goes down mid-season, the team’s budget is large enough and rotation deep enough to withstand losing him.

  19. havery says:

Sign Sheets, if he gets hurt we have three servicable 5th starters to fill in. I would only do a one-year deal though.

  20. havery says:

With Sheets we have a #1 starter, a #2 starter and then three #3 – #4 starters. That is an unreal rotation.

  21. therealsince86 says:

The only problem I see with this is based on what the Mets have said and done.
They have said they want Niese to compete for a spot.
They have signed Redding and promised him that the could compete for a spot.
They have signed Garcia and promised him that he could compete for a spot.

I don’t think, as much as I would like it to happen, that the Mets will go in this direction.

I expect Abreu and would be fine with that as well.

    • JG says:

      NOOOOOOOO
      MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • stickguy says:

Agreed that the rotation is most likely done. And I am also fine with that. I wouldn’t mind a different bat though. Just not a big Abreu fan (and yes, I know the numbers look good).

For some reason, I just think that if you let Murphy play every day (with spot rest against tougher lefties) he will end up having a nice year, and will approach the numbers Abreu will put up (since I think he will probably decline a bit this year).

But, redding/Garcia/Neise is a nice mix to have fighting for the 5-7 slots. And not a Lima in sight.

  22. stickguy says:

Take the flyer on Sheets for 1 year + an option (based on IPs). If he can come close to replicating last year (or the quality, if not quantity), you come out way ahead.

But, the rotation now should be fine without him. And having Redding/Garcia/Neise as 5/6/7 looks way better than last year.

And getting Maine back healthy will be like adding another upper rotation SP over what they had last year. basically Maine replaces Pedro, and Redding/garcia replace Neise 9from the august/spetember “choke” rotation).

Still would like to see them add another OF bat with some pop. Wiggington (even with home/road splits) also offers flexibility. Gabe Kaplar, someone like that would have been nice.

Look still for Omar to swing a surprise deal to punch up the offense. Just a gut feeling!

    • JG says:

Yup, hopefully. Think about it like this –
Everyone knew we’d sign K-rod, noone saw Putz coming.
Hopefully now, everyone knew we’d sign Ollie, and noone will see Sheets coming?

  23. bronxb225 says:

I have been on the Mets case for a few weeks now as they have kinda tiptoed around making further improvements. With news of Ollie and the team agreeing to terms I can breath a little bit of a sigh of relief. “HOWEVA” (que Steven A. Smith), there is still room for more improvement. I’ve been wanting Manny for a long time now BUT, if we swoop in and snag Sheets I can take the chance of going into the season with the lineup we have. Pitchers are usually ahead of the hitters early on the season anyway so maybe a top-of-the-league rotation could steal a few wins based solely on that. We don’t need to win the division in July, but if our offense is struggling at that point in the year perhaps Omar can swing a deal. I’d love Manny in our lineup but if we can acquire a good player who is younger, more cost effective and balanced in his skill set then I can accept that. We just need to do whatever it takes to run our division and play some November baseball in 2009 after the last two seasons.

    • Kalihan42 says:

Its not like our line-up was full of chumps last year. Everyone talks like we have the nationals onn the field We have a quality top of the line-up and I guess pitching wins…but I would feel better with 1 more bat.

  24. CaseStreet says:

    Santana
    Sheets
    Perez
    Maine
    Pelf
    Redding
    Garcia
    Niese

    OR

    Santana
    Maine
    Perez
    Pelf
    Pedro
    Redding
    Garcia
    Niese

  25. Wanny Backstra says:

The problem with Sheets is that he may not even make those 20 starts. As it is now, his MRI suggested a torn flexor tendon and he was unable to finish last season as a result.

I’m not sure if he is worth the gamble or not. I’d have to leave that decision to a medical doctor.

    • JG says:

I think it’s worth the risk considering the potential there. If he stays healty, Santana-Sheets would be a pretty intimidating 1-2 to open a playoff series.

  26. iso says:

How about this – Instead of getting Sheets for $8+, we trade Niese and Murphy to the Astros for Carlos Lee (if he is still available)and have them pick up some $.

I have no problem with Garcia and Redding as our #5 starters. With FOUR young starters in our rotation alrady, Niese is expandable.

    • JG says:

Doubt they would pick up some $, but love the idea of trading for Lee. Doubt just Niese and Murphy get it done though.

  27. CharlieH says:

I sure the Omarpons are listening to you, Matthew…

  28. EdH says:

Sign Sheets now. If Ollie signed for three years, they should be able to sign Sheets for one-plus.

  29. Golden Ratio says:

Why is my post awaiting Moderation?

Don’t go all Big Brother on us here, Matt.

  30. sanderson13 says:

I think 20 GS of Ben Sheets is worth ~$12 million.

I’m guessing $10 million for one year would certainly get him signed, right? $8 million?

So, the only reasons the Mets wouldn’t do that are:

    1. They disagree with my own valuation by a wide margin
    2. Wilpon is cheap

And yeah, how nasty would this look for an NL team with the core four the Mets have on offense, and the bolstered bullpen?

    Joe-Han
    Sheets
    Perez
    Maine
    Pelfrey

    Garcia
    Redding
    Niese

    Damn, that’d be really sweet.
