by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have signed free-agent RHP Elmer Dessens to a $600,000 minor-league contract, according to the Denver Post.

The 38–year-old Dessens is 7–11 with a 5.95 ERA through the last three seasons, during which he made five starts and 78 relief appearances, while walking just 38 batters in 115 innings.

He has pitched for eight teams in his 11–year career.

SheaHeyKid24 February 5, 2009 at 7:00 pm

YES!

rM teM February 5, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Jesus Christ!! Over half a million for a guy who is 7-11 with an era of about 6???
What is he hired to do? Work with the grounds crew?

reillys5 February 5, 2009 at 9:34 pm

THATS THE LEAGUE MINIMUM

Tidewater February 5, 2009 at 10:02 pm

no it isn’t.

Tidewater February 5, 2009 at 10:05 pm

From 2006 collective bargaining agreement:

Minimum Salary
1. Major League: $380,000 in 2007, $390,000 in 2008 and $400,000 in 2009, COLA in 2011.
2. Minor League: $60,000 in 2007, $62,500 in 2008, $65,000 in 2009.

JefJarrett February 5, 2009 at 7:00 pm

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not that I care, just that since I read about this on MLBTR, I couldn’t wait for Matt to post it and see the irrational comments that will follow.

I’ll start making the popcorn now ;-)

MetsFan4Decades February 5, 2009 at 7:06 pm

LOL. Seriously, don’t know why some get all bent out of shape about minor league signing. They need a roster for those teams, same as the big leagues. They don’t all come from young guys and drafts…

Tidewater February 5, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Because he has never been a good pitcher, he’s 38 years old, he’s a right handed pitcher and it’s $600,000.

LNBGS February 5, 2009 at 8:32 pm

not to mention his name is ELMER… waste of 600K

Razor Shines February 6, 2009 at 7:52 am

He was pretty good with Cincinnati 37 years ago.

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 7:16 pm

HAHAHA! Better make a big bucket of popcorn….

weneedhelpnow February 5, 2009 at 7:00 pm

ruiz2k5 February 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm

reillys5 February 5, 2009 at 7:03 pm

haha drama? what the hells a chuck lidell?!

JefJarrett February 5, 2009 at 7:05 pm

El-mer Des-sens

Noun

1. A poor pitcher used to fill out minor league rosters
2. a non story that will bring about ridiculous comments on MetsBlog

Hope this helps.

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 7:18 pm

LOL!! Dude, PLEASE keep the humor coming…..

Hazmet February 5, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I almost didn’t even open this post but thank you for making it worth while. lol, whlwee.

breadclock February 5, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Oh Fudd, now I remember him.

NYMetsTalk February 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm

22.50 ERA last year; 4 IP, 10 hits/10 runs w/ ATL last year.

No issue though, he’ll be in the minors.. its the lefty signing we must watch out for.. Ohman perhaps

weneedhelpnow February 5, 2009 at 7:02 pm

yeah i’d take him over manny

Razor Shines February 6, 2009 at 7:59 am

But will you stand outside of a TV studio in freezing weather to get him?

NewYorkMetfanatic62 February 5, 2009 at 7:10 pm

on Mets Hot Stove, they mentioned that Omar contacted Will Ohman’s agent.

oleosmirf February 5, 2009 at 7:11 pm

his name is Elmer, thats amazing…

metsfanmurph February 5, 2009 at 7:12 pm

There is another 600,000 that could have gone to Manny

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Excellent point! Now we would just be oh, about $49,400, 000 short….

JefJarrett February 5, 2009 at 7:30 pm

HAHAHA, you keep it coming too!

adropofvenom February 5, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Not even, if you read the article it said he’s only guaranteed $72,000. The rest is obviously incentive based, which considering he’ll never make the big leagues, he’ll never see.

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Correct my friend, but the truly devout Mannyac(c)(r)(tm) NEVER lets a small detail like this interfere with worship of the all-powerful MANNYCOUPONS, of the career .943 BA w/RISP.

darkstar73 February 5, 2009 at 7:53 pm

people who make posts like that obviously don’t know how to read, or else he would have seen that in the article. People can post all they want about Manny, but this team ain’t going over the luxury tax threshold. Sorry!

LetsGoMets123 February 5, 2009 at 7:18 pm

AND THE REASON FOR THIS IS…????
WHY

Bluewater3272 February 5, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I’ve read that Elmer has THE worst breath in the big leagues…

mets4ever900 February 5, 2009 at 7:27 pm

come on guys u have to understand that they have a MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM so they need to fill those spots… so dont freak out hes not gonna be in the majors this year… i hope

tonyatlas44 February 6, 2009 at 7:29 am

Yes, I DO understand that we have a minor league system. I DON”T understand why it is being populated with 38-year old has-beens.

Just my 2 cents.

NPerez February 5, 2009 at 7:37 pm

This guy won’t even be helpful in the minors. He’s awful. Completely awful.

darkstar73 February 5, 2009 at 7:54 pm

you’re absolutely right, we need to trade for Nathan and Pabelbon to be our AAA bullpen stalwarts.

The Captain February 5, 2009 at 7:51 pm

If anyone would scroll to my november posts of a plan the mets should take. I was the first one to say sign Elmer Dessens, now 4 months later my prayers have been answered. …………………………………….NOT!

EncinoMets February 5, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Still laughing :-)

Mr North Jersey February 5, 2009 at 7:57 pm

>=)

PhiloBeddoe February 5, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Mets get Elmer Dessens….we’re going to sign seventy non-impact, sub-par position players\pitchers until we reach the 10 million we could have gave Hudson or the 25 mil Manny would have required…

tbinct February 5, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Omar: “Be vewwy vewwy quiet, I’m hunting Elmer”

shiprdr19 February 5, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Too freakin’ funny!!!

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 8:41 pm

HAHAHA!!!

ProudMetFan February 5, 2009 at 8:06 pm

$600,000 deals are the best!

fongulalou February 5, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 5, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Ha!

sarge71 February 5, 2009 at 9:14 pm

why do we want Jorge Sosa back?
oh wait…this guy just 6 years older

dave27 February 5, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Hopefully Matt will just stop posting when the Mets sign players to minor league deals…

The Slider February 5, 2009 at 9:19 pm

YO YO YO!!!

*****BREAKING NEWS*******

BILL PULSIPHER IS THE STARTING PITCHER FOR PUERTO RICO IN TONIGHT’S CARIBBEAN WS GAME.

Update:

Bill Pulsipher with a 1-2-3 first inning. One K.

breadclock February 5, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Sign Pulse for $600K for nostalgia’s sake.

mouserdz February 5, 2009 at 9:39 pm

from a mets perspective, I rather forget the mid/late 90s.

BBmetsfreak36 February 5, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Get Pudge to a minor/major leage deal.
Not garanteed but if doesn’t make the 25 man roster can declare his independance. Let him and Castro duke it out for the spot.
Odalis Perez just signed a minor-leage deal with the Nationals. Dammit I wanted him on the depth chart. It’s a minor leage contract, he’s cheap, lefty and made 14 quality starts last year. But no big loss.

and who is this guy dessens?? Eh w/e.

mdemaio February 5, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Somewhere in the Dessens house is a drawer full of pics of the Wilpons at the Mayflower hotel in compromising positions…there’s no other reasonable explanation for this…

egnirc February 5, 2009 at 11:46 pm

We are in for a long few weeks being that theres only 15 guys on the 25 man Bisons roster.

The complainers will have about 10 more signings like this to cry about.

Al Kykyoras February 6, 2009 at 2:39 am

Awesome! Sweet! Super!

Lets throw some more shizzle at the wall and see what sticks!!!

Gotta stock up for that AAAA team! YES!

Lightning in DA bottle yo!

Al Kykyoras February 6, 2009 at 2:40 am

BTW – I’m counting down the minutes until the next scrub signing I can complain about. Whoopie!

met-lover February 6, 2009 at 8:21 am

Met-Lover says:

Another brilliant move Omar (but we don’t have the money) Minaya.$600,000 wasted.

met-lover February 6, 2009 at 8:28 am

I finally figured it out. Omar is silently working for Madoff!! He is seriously wasting Wilpon’s money.

alex.422 February 6, 2009 at 8:34 am

ANOTHER FU****** GARBAGE!!!

GREAT JOB OMAR MINAYA!!!!

Jmiles February 6, 2009 at 9:07 am

He will go over real well in NY.Then again if he pitches well he will automatically become a fan favorite
Still some of the blame should go to his parents who should have known better than to name their kid Elmer
Can’t wait to hear Gary,Ron and Keith talk about him

egnirc February 6, 2009 at 9:38 am

Can someone change the post already?
He’s guaranteed $72,000. up to 600k with incentives.

And if he makes those incentives doesn’t that mean he did well?

egnirc February 6, 2009 at 9:44 am

My bad slightly, $72,000 MiLB and if he gets called up $600,000 for MLB.

But i think if this guy gets called up the team has much more concerns than 600k.

SenatorSteve February 6, 2009 at 10:37 am

I thought Omar said “No more big moves.”

He was just being sneaky…
What a master of distraction, hiding our love affair with Elmer Dessens.

realmet February 6, 2009 at 11:40 am

You know what, this should bring about ridiculous comments becuase it’s a ridiculous signing. Sometimes I think Omar just gets bored and makes a move for the sake of making one. Ala the Heath Bell/Ring for Adkins and the OF’er who’s name escapes me, Bannister for Burgos and Matt Lindstrom/Henry Owens for Bostick and Vargas deals. I can understand stocking the 3A roster a bit, but now it’s really getting stupid. Way, way too many bad picthers and Of’er that can’t hit a lick. AND, the majority of the OF’ers hit lefty (which we don’t need)and most of the pitchers throw right handed. (which again we don’t need)

hjhjhjhjhj February 6, 2009 at 12:47 pm

some of you guys really need to get a grip….i thought you were lost before, but some of these comments show your utter lack of understanding of this sport and business side of it….please do your self a favor and never post here again….
