Note: Daniel Murphy still means Business

By Matthew Cerrone on Feb 11, 2009, 3:48 pm

Daniel Murphy showed up all the veterans and several of his young counterparts by gliding through sprints this morning like he was Usain Bolt or something,” writes Bart Hubbuch to his blog for the New York Post.

According to Hubbuch, ‘Murphy is in great shape and looks like he wishes the season would start yesterday.’

Hubbuch also blogs about when Francisco Rodriguez is expected in camp; the bond between JJ Putz, Sean Green and Jeremy Reed; and Jerry Manuel, who is expected to arrive on Thursday.

Lastly, in a post to his blog for Newsday, David Lennon provides a lengthy quote from Ryan Church, regarding Mike Francesa’s off-season statement that he was unhappy in New York City.

In short, Church says he loves New York, adding about Francesa, adding, “Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion and stuff like that, but I know what I said and what I didn’t say.”

If Murphy can have a year similiar to the end of last year that would be great.

He seems to be on track to burn himself out by September for the annual slide in the standings.

Hubbuch doesn’t read what he writes, so why should we?

He tries to make something between Putz & K-Rod about Putz being in camp early while K-Rod isn’t coming til the deadline, and then goes on to say that Putz’s wife is having a baby in 2 weeks so Putz will leave camp.

EARTH TO BART: Putz is getting his work in early, trying to get ahead of schedule, so that when he comes back after the baby is born, he’ll be even with everyone.

    I hate reporters…

Good pickup. Bart is a snake and he is not to be trusted. He wrote that incredibally inaccurate article about Jerry Manuel stabbing Willie in the back last year.

Call me a typical negative Mets fan but why should I believe that Murphy is legit. His minor league stats aren’t overly impressive. He didn’t go to a top college program. Isn’t it possible that he is just another Victor Diaz?

Either he has just peaked as a player (which I hope is the case), he got hot for a month (Victor Diaz), or he is using steriods.

what does using steroids have to do with anything? Seriously, your other points are fair, but how does using steroids make you more patient at the plate? Murphy doesn’t have much power, which is what steroids give you, so what exactly is the point? You may be a typical negative Met fan, but you’re also a typical stupid Met fan.

No it doesn’t, but ti give you a patient approach and a solid eye at the plate has nothing to do with Murphy.

And you are being a typical met fan. If the guy wasn’t over-hyped he’s reached his ceiling. If he’s a big time prospect who’s name you’ve hear about, no immediate success and he’s a bust and should have been traded.

          Feb 11, 2009, 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #

But my point is that we have no idea how good this kid really is, and while he may turn out to be a very solid player, just throwing him out there with no plan B is extremely shortsighted. The Mets could’ve easily signed Abreu and then not have to rely so much on a virtual rookie. Omar can play this off as having confidence in the kid all he wants, but this is clearly a money issue.

i do agree 911 but i think the plan is that if the murph/ tatis platon fizzles then murphy gets sent down and valentin plays the of – i am pretty sure that if marlon anderson has a bad st and first couple of weeks of the season he’s as good as toast – dont forget valentin has played 1b 2b and the of for the mets

you ignore the fact he didnt have a start for a bout a week. because of all the successive lefties we faced in a row. when he got a bulk of the starts he performed.

you give wright an 1 at bat a day for a week see if it doesnt affect his approach for a couple weeks after.

Well, he wasn’t going to hit .350 forever, probably just a slump. He destroyed pitching in the Arizona Fall League (granted, it’s a hitters’ league but he still raked). Would I have liked Omar to have brought in a stronger corner OF bat? Yes. I thought Murphy might have been better suited playing first or second base every day at AAA, ready to be called up when someone got hurt. But Omar seems to have a lot of faith in this kid, and I certainly like what I saw from him last year, so maybe he truly is ready. We’ll find out soon enough….

I love Murphy’s approach and also his attitude. My main concern is the lineup as currently constituted has what I consider four question marks/black holes (in the case of Schneider/Castillo). This team really needs Church and the Murphy/Tatis platoon to come through or they’ll struggle. Just don’t see them getting much out of Castillo or Schneider. Castillo was a fine player when he had tons of speed and could beat out his pathetic infield dribblers for hits. I’ll be pulling hard for those outfielders to make up the difference for second base and catcher, which is why I thought bringing in another established bat was a good idea. I’m still for signing Ray Durham to bring in another guy that can play second when Castillo inevitably falters/gets hurt. Still think the team needs a bit more offense, and no Jose Valentin doesn’t count….

Looking into the crystal ball here is a look how everyone will do…

Jose Reyes will take big strides this year flirt with 100 SB but in the end fall short. He will win a Gold Glove and Increase his AVG, 3B and HR totals.
    .323 .378 .494
    20 3B
    20 HR
    93 SB (23 CS)

Luis Castillo will have a bounce back year but will not be very impressive. His defense will be addiquet but have some Errors that will effect some games. He will have a short stint on the disable list but come back steady. He will leave us with the feelingg at the end of the season that 2B could be improved, but if hes back in 2010 we can accept it

    .277 .356 .425
    1 HR
    25 SB

David Wright will have a break out year but once again not get an MVP award. He will become the face of the francise and flirt with the Mets HR Record.

    .330 .425 .694
    41 HR
    136 RBI

    to be continued……

There’s absolutely no way Castillo slugs .425. I think his career slugging percentage sits somewhere around .340 or .350 and that was when he was hitting .300 all the time. Still, I’d take the .277 and .356 OBP with the 25 steals….

And why not? Career line of .277, .352, .436. A switch hitter with almost identical numbers against lefties and righties? Sounds like a great late-game option and he’d be a perfect fill-in whenever Castillo, much more so than Cora or Valentin…I don’t know, I’ve always thought Durham was an underappreciated player. He’d immediately make this bench pretty strong, especially if Tatis keeps hitting or Marlon Anderson starts hitting (that would be a surprise)

I had to register for the site to tell some of you guys how much I hate you and your pessimistic attitudes. Murphy is young talent and is the future of the franchise. Fck manny and all the baggage that comes along with it. Let’s see what the Comeback Player of the Year and a rising STUD (yes i said STUD) will do in Left.

And under the circumstances that he was a one-year bust, there are plenty of players in contract years that we can trade for. The economy is only going to get worse, and teams that aren’t in major markets like NY are going to be looking to unload expensive players.

Welcome Murphy and let’s not throw him under the bus if he goes into a minor slump in June.

AND more importantly, shut the hell up about Manny, it’s not happening, it’s just wasting everyone’s time as we scroll over your ignorant posts.

    You get up every morning

    There’s a whistle up above
    And people pushin’, people shovin’
And the girls who try to look pretty
And if your train’s on time
You can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
    If you ever get annoyed
    Look at me I’m self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day
    And I’ll be…
Taking care of business every day
Taking care of business every way
I’ve been taking care of business, it’s all mine

    You could be a musician
If you could make sounds loud or mellow
    Get a second-hand guitar
    Chances are you’ll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows
    People see you having fun
    Just a-lying in the sun
Tell them that you like it this way
It’s the work that we avoid
    And we’re all self-employed

noone is throwing Murphy under the bus but to expect him to repeat his performance from last season is asking way too much.

I expect him to bat around .280 with 12 HR in around 400-450 AB which for a 1st year player is a great start to a career…

In my comment earlier, you’ll find that I absolutely love Murphy and his approach/attitude. I’m just not completely sold on this lineup as currently constructed because they seem to be relying on too many unknowns. Is Church healthy enough to give you a good 140 games and if so, does he produce like he did the first two months of last year? Can Tatis and Murphy recreate the magic of last year? I’m actually more sold that Murphy can but let’s be honest, Tatis was pretty much out of the majors for a good part of five years. Can Castillo give you anything resembling his past production? And if he falters, can Cora? Will Schneider magically become a hitter after showing no signs of it throughout his career? A lineup can live with perhaps two or three rough spots if those guys are giving you great defense and as long as the other guys are holding their weight. But if you have four troublesome spots, you’ve got a problem. I’d like to think the Mets will only have two weak links (2B, C) but I’m not positive, which is why I said they should have brought in Abreu on a one-year deal….

      • oleosmirf
        Feb 11, 2009, 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #

        to me its the pitching.

i am not happy about Oliver Perez being back. He choked away a huge game for us and he can’t pitch deep into games. He kills the bullpen and is more likely to throw a dud then a gem.

Yes he’s a 27 year old lefty with potential but I dont see him ever being better than he is right now. I see 2007 as more a fluke then anything…

Pelfrey was amazing last season but if he doesnt repeat then what else do we have to fall back on Maine? He’s always got some type of nagging injury and he doesnt pitch past 6 innings either.

        • ASod1975
          Feb 11, 2009, 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #

Well, I agree with you there but it’s kind of which came first, the chicken or the egg argument in that if Omar upgraded the offense, the pitching questions wouldn’t be as magnified and vice versa. The bullpen, however, has been majorly upgraded (especially if they add another lefty like Ohman or Beimel) so that’ll be a help. I would have felt better if Lowe had been added, but not at the price and length of contract he ended up getting. I still can’t help but think the Mets might be a player (either starting pitcher or outfield bat) away from being an elite team….

well if Murphy and/or Church are not producing at the level we need them to a guy like Jermaine Dye would be a perfect move at the deadline.

he’d be at the end of his contract anyway so it should cost next to nothing to bring him in.

maybe Evans and a semi-decent pitching prospect if that much…

I’ve always liked Dye and I think he’d be a great addition to the lineup. Maybe Evans/Kunz and perhaps a lower-level guy could get it done. I’d like to see them hang on to Parnell, he’s got pretty good stuff. So any ideas what other bat they could bring in for the bench? I’ve mentioned Durham ad nauseum (just really like the guy) but Nomar might not be a bad choice either? I also wouldn’t mind giving Alou a look, but mainly to fill the Marlon Anderson/Julio Franco role of pinch-hitter. The guy can still hit in his sleep. If they did that, Anderson would be cut because you’d need more guys with versatility. But those are just three names off the top of my head….

Pretty minor point, and I apologize if you guys have discussed it earlier, but I just noticed that Tim Redding won’t have enough service time to become a free agent after ’09, so he’ll be a Met in 2010 too unless they non-tender him even though right now he’s just on a 1 year contract.

      Feb 11, 2009, 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #

That’s a win-win for the Mets. If he has a nice year and makes strong contributions to the team’s success, you bring him back next year. If not, you non-tender him and look elsewhere….

Yes, he was arbitration eligible for the Nationals, but they non-tendered him, which the Mets can also do if they choose to after this season.

From current Mets lineup, who do you think was on that 104 name list?

I think Delgado has very good chance at being on that list

I’m actually more concerned about Piazza being on it, as he’s my favorite Met since the 80′s glory days. I’d hate to see it jeopardize his Hall of Fame chances, so let’s hope he’s not on there….

Yeah great voice. Plus I love that he sometimes comes to the plate to the “Darth Vader” theme music. In a nutshell, I love Castro’s intangibles, but he’s hurt too often and if the rumor of his being traded turns out to be true, I won’t miss him in any on-the-field context.

Given that Pedro’s always been 160 pounds soaking wet, I would doubt it. I think his injury problems are more due to wear and tear on a pretty small physique to begin with…

Prior has already been invited to Padres camp. Agree with you about Mulder, especially since the Mets have invited Elmer “Why Am I Still in Baseball” Dessens to camp, the very definition of a batting practice pitcher.

Okay, I’d like everyone to order our question players (Castillo, Church, Delgado, Maine, Murphy, Pelfrey, Tatis) from most likely to least likely to succeed this year. My list would go Maine, Pelfrey, Murphy, Delgado, Church, Tatis, Castillo.

      Feb 11, 2009, 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #

I pretty much agree with you. If I were to nitpick I might switch the order of Delgado and Murphy solely because Delgado has a track record. But baseball often surprises, so look for big things from Castillo (he said wishfully).

      Nice question!

      Pelfrey
      Maine
Delgado/Murphy tie; (good, but not amazing, years for both)
      Church
      Castillo
      Tatis

Delgado (I wrote him off long ago so I must make amends)

      Pelfrey
      Maine
      Church
      Murphy
      Tatis
      Castillo
