Read: Schneider Doesn’t Want Platoon

by Regis Courtemanche

David Lennon at Newsday catches up with Brian Schneider in Port St. Lucie and discusses, among other things, his health, and playing time in 2009.

According to Lennon, when asked about splitting catching duties with Ramon Castro, Schneider said “I want to play every day. I want to face lefties. I don’t want it to be a platoon situation, but that call goes to Jerry [Manuel]. Jerry knows I want to go out there every day.”

In a recent post, Christian at MetsMerized Online breaks down how Schneider stacked up to other catchers around the league in 2008.

…i’m curious to see how Jerry Manuel handles the catching responsibilities this year, but i feel that schneider – despite rumors of being traded this winter – will get the majority of the starts…and if healthy, he should…

If and when Castro goes on the DL, Schneider will be the everyday C. So hes got nothing to worry about

helicopter ben johnson February 12, 2009 at 8:40 am

Why? he was terrible last year. See those bpen splits between him and Castro? Yikes

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:41 am

If you want to put stake into a bias report by a bunch of fans go ahead. Did you notice that they only used certain pitcher’s stats and not all of them?

helicopter ben johnson February 12, 2009 at 8:44 am

youre right. instead of a bunch of fans, i should listen to you.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:45 am

No, I don’t care who you listen to. As I said if you want to put stock in that then go ahead. I will actually look at all the stats and make my decision.

helicopter ben johnson February 12, 2009 at 8:48 am

maybe you’re right, post some #s if you want. he was garbage last year as far as i know.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:52 am

Someone did when the report first came out. It was pretty even. I don’t really have the time or desire to look right now. I made my decision then. Maybe later on today I will be that bored.

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 8:51 am

LMAO… ziiiiinnngggg….

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:53 am

Thought you would like it. Maybe he can join you and your buddies, Mr Bill, ATMF, Mistermet and Fiyawhatever. What a group that would be. Could you really claim to be part of that group?

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 8:58 am

youre right. instead of a bunch of fans, i should listen to you”

LMAO.. AGAIN!!!

that’s exactly what we been saying to you man, if someone doesn’t agree wit you that person is wrong or incoherent..

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 9:03 am

Show me where I said he was wrong? In fact I told him it was fine for him to believe that. I am choosing not to, which is also ok. I think?

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 9:08 am

lol, u gotta admit he got you good..

TheChosen1 February 12, 2009 at 9:00 am

Mets team pitching w/ Schneider behind the plate:

3822 PA / 112 HR / 366 BB / .254 BAA / .741 OPS

W/ Castro:

1488 PA / 31 HR / 124 BB / .238 BAA / .673 OPS

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:40 am

Which is why Castro should be traded. The guy has no use. They can’t use him as a pinch hitter unless they carry 3 catchers and they are affraid to bring him in late in the game without a 3rd catcher because he will get injured.
Trade him to the Brewers.

mrose February 12, 2009 at 8:43 am

i excpected more cerrone bashing for saying that he “should” be the starting catcher…
i agree w/ it..yea he doesn’t have the pop of Castro, but thats all Castro’s got..well that and a big head

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:44 am

I am tired of Castro and any of the others who countless times have been injured when we needed them the most.

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 8:45 am

In Matt’s defense (not that he needs my help), it was Regis C. that made the post and the comment.

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 8:46 am

I think late last year Schiender showed he can hit the long ball. He did hit 9 last year in only 335 ABs. ALot of those HR came in the second half. BEsides hes our number 8 hitter. How much do you expect from the #8 slot in the lineup.

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 8:50 am

A bit more from him, since with Castillo, Schnieder ends up being the #7 hitter.

I refuse to accpet the idea that Luis will be in the 2 hole. I can barely accept the idea that he will even be on the team!

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 8:54 am

Let s face hit, Castillo will be our #2 hitter.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:55 am

A lot depends on Murphy. They put him there for a reason last year.
But lets also remember that Church and Beltran hit 2nd last year too.

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 8:58 am

If you bat Beltran 2nd. Than after the 4th spot, whats left? That would really weaken the lineup

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:55 am

I would much rather have Castillo batting 9th but I don’t see Jerry doing that. If not, then I would bat him 7th. That way if he does get on and steals his normal 20+ bases Schnieder can drive him in.

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 8:49 am

I would like to see them both dumped and a new (“real”) catcher brought in. Hey, they are going to need one in 2010, might as well get a head start on fixing the problem!

But, given the 2 dudes we seem to be stuck with, Shnieder probably should be the regular. But, almost every catcher, and certainly one his age, needs plenty of rest.

So, he gets 2/3 of the starts, since probably 2/3 of the SPs faced will be RH. Castro can get his spot starts against lefties.

Schnieder will get some starts aginst lefties if they face a bunch in a row. So not really a platoon, just using 2 guys enough to keep the #1 reasonably fresh.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:50 am

Thinking alike here. Is there no way we can get Napoli or even Molina?

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 8:53 am

you can get anyone, but will it be worth the cost?

I honestly think Omar is trying to hoard his chips as much as ossible this year. Payroll worries, the economy, needing to let some of them develop at a higher level, spots to fill in 2010, and worries about some of the current roster all come into play.

I would love to see them make a run at one of these guys. Molina might be a hit to the budget but more affordable player wise. Napoli will cost some serious talent.

jrg1397 February 12, 2009 at 8:56 am

I think the mets should trade schnider and get Pudge. Can hit play defense and is a proven leader

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 9:01 am

Cant’ really trade Schnieder and bring in Pudge. Once Pudge is old and you need a backup that can actually play more than an inning without getting injured.
Now if you can trade Castro and get Pudge then do it now.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:49 am

Here’s a fantasy trade for you guys to pick apart. Just for fun
Delgado and Castillo Cost 18 million for the Angels this season but only 30 total instead of 33.
for
Napoli and Matthews Jr. Actually saves the Mets 6 million this year and only cost 3 million more over all. Then the Mets use part of that 6 million to get Hudson.

Reyes, Murphy, Beltran, Wright, Church, Napoli, Hudson, Mathews Jr.

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 8:52 am

I dont like that trade, Delgado put up better #’s than Napoli and Mathews combined last season.

therealsince86 February 12, 2009 at 8:58 am

Of course he did. However, Napoli is a young catcher who hit 20 HR in 227 AB’s with a .374 OBP and is still under contract.
Napoli, Mathews Jr, Hudson, Murphy gives more production than
Delgado, Murphy, Castillo, Schnieder.

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 8:56 am

here’s a fantasy trade for real, pujols for castillo. delgado for oswaltt.

Chan Ho Parking Lot February 12, 2009 at 9:07 am

No shot. You can get more for Castillo than just Pujols. If you throw in Ludwick, then maybe I would think about it.

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 9:10 am

lol, got you.. man, honestly i see him as the aaron heilmann of the team now that the actual aaron heilmann is gone..

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 8:57 am

I do it to get rid of Castillo and to bring in a LT solution at catcher. And I still don’t know if I can trust Delgado!

Not sure what you get out of GMJ, but he is at least a good (albeit expensive) 4th OF.

Can you live with him starting in LF and Murphy at 1st? Probably.

And you gotta admit, a lot more speed on the team. And th bottom of the order looks must better.

Of course, judgement will always be clouded by the mere thought of unloading Castillo!

jrg1397 February 12, 2009 at 8:54 am

This dude has some cojones on him. the dude could not hit or catch yet he wants to play every day. he is lucky castillo was worst than him couse if not met would have bood him

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 8:56 am

As far as hitting goes, the guy is a career .253 / .325. No one expecting much from his bat. I think it was his sub par defense that was a surprise. But than again, that could just be a result of catching a new pitching staff.

jrg1397 February 12, 2009 at 8:59 am

BS, that an excuse im not willing to except from a professional defensive catcher.

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 9:03 am

I htink most people, in every aspect of life, when put in a new situation or environment, will struggle in the beggining. Im not defending the guy, im just saying its a possibilty.

the thing is, alot of these Met fans today want to put out an all star caliber player, a .300 hitter at every position. Teams are not built like that. Every team has holes.

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 8:57 am

yeah, i thought the same thing, a guy who hit 250 and he’s demanding to play everyday, what’s the world coming to huh..

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 9:00 am

He didn’t “demand” to play every day. He gave an honest answer, they frankly every player should give. He simplay said that he wants to play every day, even against lefties, but it was up to the manager to decide who plays when. No threats, etc.

I’m more worried about a guy like Castro, that IIRC came out and said he does not want to be a regular!

At least both guys are gone after 2009, if not before.

alex.422 February 12, 2009 at 9:06 am

agree.. although at the end he was healthy and was hitting ok, with a lil bit more pop..

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 9:01 am

Again, he is the #8 hitter. There is an interesting article on metsmerized.com, where they compare Schnieder to the rest of the #8 hitters. He actually ranks 6th.

CaseStreet February 12, 2009 at 8:56 am

One Day, One Hour and Six Minutes until Pitchers and Catchers Report.

I want 24/7 coverage.

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 February 12, 2009 at 9:14 am

Well, I have some info….JJ, The Chief, Reed and Green shared breakfast at a local I-Hop…..when JJ pas*ed the syrup to The Chief, it was 98 mph with some movement, and The Chief sprained his left wrist catching it….he is day-to-day.

And Raul is settling in nicely to his a*sisted living facility in the Clearwater area for spring training.

From ex-Mariners.com…..

CaseStreet February 12, 2009 at 9:32 am

I prefer Denny’s. I knew I wouldn’t like these guys.

Prismo February 12, 2009 at 8:57 am

Who wants to know the scariest part about Schneider?

His OPS+ last year was actually 4 points HIGHER than his career average.

Chan Ho Parking Lot February 12, 2009 at 9:00 am

I am very jealous of the Braves’ catching situation.

CaseStreet February 12, 2009 at 9:02 am

I’m sure they are VERY jealous of the Mets’ third base, shortstop, center field, first base, starting rotation, and closer situations :)

Prismo February 12, 2009 at 9:04 am

Larry’s not such a bad 3B. ;)
(In a couple years things will obviously be much different)

NYMETSFAN718 February 12, 2009 at 9:06 am

Case,
Yunel Escobar is a really good SS. But i do agree, we are sitting pretty compared to them.

CaseStreet February 12, 2009 at 9:00 am

Casanova or Cancel?

Chan Ho Parking Lot February 12, 2009 at 9:02 am

I actually liked Cancel. He has deceptive speed for a block shaped guy.

C Dubb February 12, 2009 at 9:04 am

Versus lefties in 2008:

.187 / .291 / .200(!), 0 HR, 7 RBI, 10 BB, 16 K in 75 AB.

Are you serious, Brian? You’re really going to say it’s Jerry’s call to play you against lefties?? Really. Were you even awake during your at-bats against lefties?? Did you forget your bat for those??

I wouldn’t play Schneider against anyone with a lefty somewhere on their roster or farm system.

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 9:08 am

Those are some ugly numbers. Even bad for a pitcher!

Castro had best stay healthy this year.

Prismo February 12, 2009 at 9:10 am

For comparison, Castro vs lefties:

.277 / .319 / .462, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 4 BB, 15 K in 65 AB (68 PA)

stickguy February 12, 2009 at 9:06 am

Thanks TRS. I was finally getting past thinking of bold, creative trade ideas that have no chance of happening.

I think Omar has gotten too tame (gunshy?) Maybe it is a mis-perception, but I used to think of him as a out of the box thinker, willing to make risky trades, or at least creative ones.

Most GMs seem to be too afraid of making a mistake that they only do safe moves (or non at all) so they can’t get roasted if it fails.

The team as is can be fine, but there are some big holes coming in 2010. So a trade now to revamp the 2009 team, while also plugging gaps for 2010+, would be wonderful to see IMO.

Moving Delgado might be risky, but if it allows you to upgrade 2-3 other spots when the musical chairs stop, then well worth doing.

besides, if he goes down hurt or loses his stroke again, they might be in a world of hurt.

BringBackDaveTelgheder February 12, 2009 at 9:09 am

Trade Castro, sign Pudge to a small 1 year deal, hope he plays well enough to challenge Schneider.

I think Pudge at least knows how to catch a ball.

0h the ag0ny February 12, 2009 at 9:39 am

you cant just say “hey! trade castro”

injury prone catchers arent exactly what teams are looking for at a 2 million dollar salary

VelvetFoot February 12, 2009 at 10:20 am

Castro was out with arthritis in the back last year.
Can’t be too good for a catcher long term.

NewYorkMetfanatic62 February 12, 2009 at 10:24 am

Brian, it’s pretty simple. If you hit and call a good game, you will play.
