Note: JJ Putz is a Character

by Matthew Cerrone on February 13th, 2009 at 10:01 am

Last night on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove live from Duffy’s in St. Lucie, Kevin Burkhardt talked with Mets set-up men Sean Green and J.J. Putz.

the two clearly have a sense of humor and a good rapport with one another from their days in Seattle… at the same time, they both want the ball, and they both want to win

To watch Green and Putz talking with Burkhardt, click here.

Putz is infamous for sneaking up on teammates and hitting them in the face, on air, in the final moments of an interview, with a shaving cream pie.

In the show’s final moments last night, Putz sneaked back on set to slam Burkhardt in the face with his signature pie, which you can watch by clicking play below:

excellent… you asked him about it one too many times, kevin that’s awesome, man… you should be honored

the Mets were well aware of putz’s way, his attitude in the clubhouse, the way he keeps people loose and having fun, and it’s a big reason why he was acquired, because he it is believed he can have a positive impact on the clubhouse for a team that is often tight when playing under pressure

…i don’t know that he’s the new Roger McDowell, but he’s close

Read: Chemistry and Purpose

by Matthew Cerrone on February 13th, 2009 at 9:06 am

In Newsday, David Lennon explains, despite not having CC Sabathia or even Pedro Martinez, what the Mets starting rotation does have is ‘chemistry and a sense of purpose, ‘two things on display even before the official beginning of spring training.’

Johan Santana, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey all reported to camp earlier this month, while Oliver Perez arrived a few days ago.

Lennon also reports on Pelfrey’s golf cart incident, while quoting John Maine, who feels Perez is more relaxed now that his free-agent negotiations are behind him.

all off season i went back and forth on whether the Mets should sign Manny Ramirez… in the end, i had a hard time denying the impact his bat would have had in this team’s lineup, because in the off season it’s easy to only view the game through a fantasy baseball prism… however, today, the sense i get from people in camp is that, without the dominating presence of guys like manny, Pedro Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, and all the drama and focus that tends to surround that caliber of player, the team is more loose and bonding more and they’re far more focused on work as a group than might have been the case had these other personalities been in town… this all sounds like typical spring training cliche to me, but that doesn’t mean there also isn’t a hint of truth to it

…i wonder how things will change, if they change at all, when General Jerry Manuel arrives in camp today

In a post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam explains why signing Ramirez would have put the Mets on step closer to being a bloated, easy-to-hate, big-market team like the Yankees.

StLucie: Pelfrey’s Golf Cart, Redding and Niese

by Matthew Cerrone on February 13th, 2009 at 8:47 am

Yesterday, as seen in this photo, Mike Pelfrey wore a black, chin-strap, military, motorcycle helmet while working out in camp.

According to Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post, “Pelfrey dubbed it his ‘crash helmet,’ a joke stemming from the day before, when he somehow managed to flip over his cart during an afternoon round of golf with fellow starter John Maine, C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church.’

For details, including quotes from Pelfrey, read Hubbuch’s report, and keep an eye on his blog, here, for updates from camp throughout the day.

pelfrey is quickly getting a reputation among fans as the dorkiest baseball player on the team… but, the funny thing is, i believe it makes him more endearing and makes him easier to cheer for… go figure

Speaking of golf, in a post to his blog for Newsday, David Lennon asks, “Does the team that golfs together, win together?”

Lennon also points out, that while Jon Niese and Tim Redding are not only in camp already, but rooming together, Freddy Garcia, who will compete against them for the fifth starter spot, has yet to arrive in camp.

For more on Pelfrey, roster moves, Redding and Niese, read Steve Popper’s blog for the Bergen Record.
