StLucie: Pelfrey’s Golf Cart, Redding and Niese

by Matthew Cerrone

Yesterday, as seen in this photo, Mike Pelfrey wore a black, chin-strap, military, motorcycle helmet while working out in camp.

According to Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post, “Pelfrey dubbed it his ‘crash helmet,’ a joke stemming from the day before, when he somehow managed to flip over his cart during an afternoon round of golf with fellow starter John Maine, C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church.’

For details, including quotes from Pelfrey, read Hubbuch’s report, and keep an eye on his blog, here, for updates from camp throughout the day.

pelfrey is quickly getting a reputation among fans as the dorkiest baseball player on the team… but, the funny thing is, i believe it makes him more endearing and makes him easier to cheer for… go figure

Speaking of golf, in a post to his blog for Newsday, David Lennon asks, “Does the team that golfs together, win together?”

Lennon also points out, that while Jon Niese and Tim Redding are not only in camp already, but rooming together, Freddy Garcia, who will compete against them for the fifth starter spot, has yet to arrive in camp.

For more on Pelfrey, roster moves, Redding and Niese, read Steve Popper’s blog for the Bergen Record.

could be an interesting battle for that 5th spot. Wonder if garcia is going to be healthy enough to even be a consideration?

Should be I suppose, since he pitched last September. Still, it would be good for the team probably if he stayed behind at least for a little while to get fully ready.

I guess the best thing would be for them all to have big springs, and each ‘earn” the job. Having more legit starters than spots would be a nice problem to have!

Geez, flipping over his cart?!? Good thing he isn’t hurt. That’s the last thing they need right now, is an injured pitcher due to a golf injury.

Anyway, is K-Rod there yet?

TheChosen1 February 13, 2009 at 8:56 am

K-Rod and Garcia are the only pitchers yet to arrive.

well, if the team “CHOKES” together that means if the win they would win “TOGETHER”.. NO?

alex.422 February 13, 2009 at 9:02 am

718,

LOL.. what i meant is if a team wins something is based on a team effort, if they lose they lose as a team too..

darkstar73 February 13, 2009 at 10:37 am

alex, wait, did the Mets miss the playoffs last year? i seem to have forgotten, i need you to remind me every day, ok?

Xavier22 February 13, 2009 at 8:57 am

Good morning sunshine!

stickguy February 13, 2009 at 9:00 am

Yeah, if you can’t be upeat and optomistic (or at least not a complete sour puss!) at the beginning of ST, there is just no hope for you.

Maybe some fans should just consider an embargo of the Mets this year (complete sensory blackout) for the sake of their sanity?

alex.422 February 13, 2009 at 9:05 am

where’s your boy TRS? i’m surprised u didn’t complement him saying “oh he’s great”..

LET’S GO METS!!!

alex.422 February 13, 2009 at 9:06 am

LMAO… it took awhile to get my point across.. and that’s even if you got it..

SinceSterns February 13, 2009 at 8:59 am

Let’s just hope they will not be setting up tee times this October again.

I think Pelf will have a great year.

stickguy February 13, 2009 at 9:04 am

I think he should let Church wear the helmet.

Or maybe he should ride in the cart with Castillo instead?

alex.422 February 13, 2009 at 9:05 am

nice.. 2 for 2 today..

fongulalou February 13, 2009 at 9:09 am

obligated to the Dodgers.B/t/W anyone notice
Tim Bogar is now on the Big-league staff
of Tampa? B/t/W-part2,Sheets had surgery
wants to pitch later this season. I hope no
one here is gonna start beating the drum for
him again. Not after what this piece of crap
tried/hoped to pull on us and others.

stone February 13, 2009 at 9:09 am

This team will be fine, just don’t let Pelf drive

just-mlb February 13, 2009 at 9:14 am

First Duaner…now Pelf?

fongulalou February 13, 2009 at 9:19 am

What? I don’t think Pelf is gonna find
Dominican take out in St.Lucie.

casey s. February 13, 2009 at 10:24 am

I complete get why Pelfrey being a dork makes him endearing to fans. I played well in HS varsity baseball and all, but I’m in no way any where the athelete these guys are. It’s nice when one of these guys doesn’t walk around like a jock and is actually a bit dorky.

darkstar73 February 13, 2009 at 10:38 am

Cerrone, for a guy as cool as you, admitting that dorkiness isn’t a bad thing must take a lot man.
