Quote: We Don’t Worry About Philly
By Mike Nichols - Feb 18, 2009 1:07 pm

Earlier this morning Mets SS Jose Reyes met the media as he arrived at Mets Camp in Port St. Lucie.

Among the questions Reyes was asked about included a response to recent comments from Phillies LHP Cole Hamels, in which he called the Mets “choke artists.”

Reyes, as quoted by reporters earlier today:

“We don’t worry about Philly. I don’t know why they worry so much about the New York Mets. They can talk about whatever they want to, because we worry about us. They are the one to win the World Series, not us, and we don’t say nothing about them. We just say congratulations to the Phillies. We focus on them when we play them, but they always seem like they’re talking something about us, and I don’t know why.”

Reyes, on learning about the Phillies criticism of his homerun celebrations, speaking to reporters this morning:

“I heard that. I don’t know why they say that, because I’m not the only one pimpin’ when I hit a home run. A lot of people do that. People from Philadelphia, too. They stand for a couple of seconds at home plate and nobody say nothing. So like I said, I don’t know why they’re so focused on us. We just worry about us.”

…good for reyes…

…i’ve never understood why philly sports fans in general worry about new york teams…it seems as if they enjoy more rooting against new york teams than rooting for their own teams…you would think after winning the world series they would stop worrying about the Mets…even during their victory celebration Chase Utley insulted the Mets…philly really needs to get over their inferiority complex, and as reyes says, worry about themselves…

  2. its_daniel_damnit says:

i thought it was rollins who dissed the mets and not utley in the parade?

  3. Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

So which Met pitcher will beam Rollins or Hamels? If neither which pitcher will beam who? They need to be humbled. LOL

    • dominicanboy08 says:

      putz!!!!

      • Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

I didn’t think of that…I was thiking of Pelfrey. :)

        • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Has to be Putz or K-Rod, doesn’t it?

          • Hazmet says:

I would think neither reliever since if their in it’s late in the game and most likely Hamels would be out since we’d have the lead and they wouldn’t hit Rollins to put a guy on base.

Pelfrey only seemed to hit Marlins but he’s a candidate and don’t count out Mr. Maine who very quietly has a mean streak that often goes undetected.

    • BigDaddyKirk says:

I would be in favor of bringing back Pedro for just this reason. He’s one of the few people that have the stones to hit someone. The only problem is that he doesn’t really throw hard enough to hurt anyone!

    • Nutz15 says:

      Newly acquired , Jim Beam.

      The terminology is “bean”.

  4. helicopter ben johnson says:

Mets are in NY, Phillies are well, in Philly.

    It’s as simple as that

  5. dominicanboy08 says:

    well said reyes…..

  6. 7train says:

    Word Up Reyes

Reyes seems a little more vocal, its time for our young bucks to lead.

Reyes and Wright – CHARGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • dominicanboy08 says:

yep, and they are only in their mid 20s, so expect better things from them!

    • marvelousmarv says:

      You said…word up!!

lets just go out and play some ball. With all the thunder going on in Yankee’s camp, they got nothing to write about the Mets so this same story just gets recycled like people care anymore.

But dont get me wrong, the Mets are better when they’re under the radar (except for ‘86).

  7. VelvetFoot says:

    Amen!

  8. CaseStreet says:

Is there anything more exciting than seeing Jose hit a triple, slide into third, bounce right up and scream, “Conio!”?

  9. udontmesswiththejohan says:

Good deal Jose – I think this is the kind of leadership a lot of met fans have been hoping for from him. Just do your talking ont he field with your play.

As far as the Philly “obsession” with the Mets, I think it has more to do with the cities than anything else. All of the major cities on the east coast (Philly, Boston, etc) seem to have an inferiority complex with regard to NYC. Not sure why, I’ve been to Philly and its a sweet little town. Quaint almost.

    • The Slider says:

      +1

    • JoeyOC says:

Def agree with the inferiority complex of Philly (Boston as well). Those fans would seriously rather see their rival NY teams lose than their own teams win. Can’t understand that.

I’m also impressed with Reyes’ comments here. After that tantrum from last season (during Manuel’s first game as manager), I thought we were going to be doomed with a nasty shortstop who has the attitude of a “This-is-my-sweet-sixteen” girl.

Glad to see that he’s maturing into a vocal leader of the team.

    • metsfan575715 says:

The only reason they talk about us is because they are gealous of us

  10. Dirtysanchez says:

philly just wants to make a rivalry like mets vs braves….

  11. eligoodrich says:

i agree they shouldnt be talkin to us and worry about themselves ,but we def worry about them and talk crap too. I hust dont know if we would mention the Phillies if we win the World Series

  12. ProudMetFan says:

lol Jose be pimpin it. Jose has the best personality of anyone on the team IMO.

  13. 911nafstem says:

How about the Mets stop worrying about the Phillies? The Phillies have bragging rights, they can say whatever they want.

So far this off-season, I’ve had to hear KRod and Beltran make fools out of themselves talking trash after the Mets just came off of two huge chokes. Memo to Mets, just shut up and win.

    • jkerwick says:

I guess the Mets can’t win. A guy makes a comment that he isn’t going to comment and he still gets torched by some people.

Memo to 911nafstem – the Mets aren’t worrying about the Phillies – clearly the other way around. If you aren’t obsessed about another team, why do you take time away from your Championship Celebration to insult another team? That would be like if the Giants went out of their way to insult the Philly Eagles after winning the Superbowl. It comes off as inferior……

And I wouldn’t say KRod and Beltran made fools out of themselves, their quotes were taken out of context – which seems to happen often in this war of words.

      • 911nafstem says:

The Phillies won a championship and they were digging it to their closest rivals and having fun with their fans. The Mets have choked twice and continue to make fools of themselves trying to talk trash to a team that has twice beat them out for the division and won a championship.

And memo to jker – I said Beltran and KROD, not Reyes.

        • ProudMetFan says:

Erm, point is the Phillies went out of their way to insult the Mets in the midst of their Championship Celebration, and continue to hara.ss the Mets organization. Calm down pal. The Mets have the right to reply to the Phillies ludicrous comments and when they have the chance to prove their feelings on the field, they will.

          • Bogar says:

To be fair, the Phils mentioned 4 teams during their championship celebration. The Mets (NL East victim), the Brewers (NLDS victim), the Dodgers (NLCS victim) and the Rays (WS victim).

Not surprisingly, NY media focused on showing you only one of these teams being talked about.

          • ProudMetFan says:

Fine, but to me its gross that the Philadelphia Philadelphias fans continue to be obsessed with us. I honestly do believe that some sports “fans” are more into haras.sing division rivals than rooting for their own club.

    • Mr North Jersey says:

So 911 is in a Mets blog complaing of how he’S\s bothered to hear KROD & Beltran dis the Phillies?

      HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

      Memo to 911: Tough….

  14. kistics says:

Let’s get some pimpin going baby!!!

  15. twofours44 says:

I agree with an above poster. Someone on the Phillies needs to get beaned in the ribs. I think it should be Utley or Rollins. I dont agree with going after a pitcher (ie Hamels) . I think you hit the best player when you have to hit somone. Im guessing no one will get hit though. Its a shame too because 50 years ago one of the Phills wouls already have gotten plunked.

    • kistics says:

Reyes should hit Hamels with his bat…

I wanna see some bench clearings and we’ll clear our couches!!

      • twofours44 says:

or just go down to Philly when he Mets play there. Youll see plenty of brawls in the stands.

        • kistics says:

Oh I’ve seen plenty at Shea too… I’m gonna stay home and clear my couch for now….

          • helicopter ben johnson says:

opening day 2008 was ridiculous, esp after we got behind in the 8th inning. it was like friday night fights in the upper deck

  16. MAM5303 says:

I was in one above the bullpen at citizens bank park, somehow the phillies fans got tossed and then sanchez threw balls up to us

  17. CharlieH says:

    GoJose!GoJose!GoJose!GO!

  18. ProudMetFan says:

I have yet to encounter a brawl at a ball game, but man I had luxury boxes at the Prudential Center during last seasons playoffs between the Devils and Rangers, and not even as a joke but every ten minutes you would see two guys screaming in each others faces. The box next to me had occupied some fellow Devils fans and they got showered with popcorn and coke. Like five guys were escorted. Im lucky I survived those few games, being surrounded by rabid Rangers fans and being in Newark lol.

  19. dave27 says:

I guess we don’t notice while we were leaving them in the dust, but the seeds for this chip on the Phillies shoulders were sown in 2006.

They just did not appreciate us coming in and sweeping them on that great trip that started on the West Coast and seemed to regard us like a new version of the 86ers – fist pumping, dancing, laughing, and having a great time. That’s why they’ve savored the last 2 years even more while remaining obsessed with us.

It’s pathetic, but again, it didn’t start in 2007.

  20. nsr says:

    What does “cono” mean?

    sorry i dont speak spanish..

  21. metsfan575715 says:

I hope they know they did not beat us we beat ourselves

  22. viteminj says:

Mike is exactly right. I live in Philadelphia, and it seems like the fans here do focus on bashing the Mets a little too much. IAfter they won the world series, I still recieved plenty of criticism about the Mets. It is just their nature, they get just as much enjoyment from their rival losing as they do from themselves winning.

  23. GregB says:

every friggin’ day the media has to ask someone about what cole hamels said…every friggin’ day!…give..it..a..rest!!!!

sports reporters are gossipy little girls.

  24. jgunzz23 says:

Jose is a straight up Pimp!
For all those Philly Phans be careful because Jose is coming for ALL his money!

  25. twofours44 says:

if you search on you tube youll find plenty of fights between philly and met fans. in all of them, the philly fans come off as white trash, which is true…

on another note. anyone ever actually hear the clip of when hamels said we were choke artists? he got pushed into giving that answer. the interviewers asked him like 5 times. finally he said ok yeah they are choke artists.

    • Hazmet says:

I believe it was Evan Roberts on WFAN that finally got him boxed in and got him to say that with Joe B stirring the pot in the background. You are correct in that they did keep at him but he should know better. It is what it is, I can’t get that crazy about a war of words spun up between rivals. The best way to respond is to beat them on the field.

    • ProudMetFan says:

After being “forced into it”, Im pretty sure his exact words were ” Yea, the past two years the Mets have been choke artists.”

  26. Mr North Jersey says:

The C. Hamels comment is like the sprinkles on a Sundae.
All he did was to add one more reason Mets need to win back their respect as a team around all of MLB
by finally smackin everyone in the mouth and doing what is their destiny win a W.S.

  27. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Sorry if this ends up as a double post bc of Firefox, but what did Utley say to insult the mets?
