The car I’m in that is driving to JFK airport just went by Citi Field, and, as you know, there was no Shea Stadium.
There was nothing but Citi Field.
Very, very weird.
As a kid, I remember being all excited to drive by Shea on the highway, seeing it empty in the distance. It as comforting. Sort of like this special place full of potential great moments, just waiting to pull me from reality.
So, to drive by today, despite seeing the impressive new stadium standing tall, I was a tad sad and lonely to see Shea missing from the horizon.

I know the feeling. Whenever I am in the car in that area my dad points out Shea Stadium and it is always easy to see the blue on the outside. Now it just won’t be the same.
and a losing season for citifield’s first season wont help
Whenever I go to NY (live in GA) I usually get to see Shea Stadium because the plane flies over it…I guess I won’t be able to see Shea from the sky anymore.
I’m ready for Citi Field
It’s gonna be tough to get tickets for that first game though…here’s to winning next weeks lottery!
good luck starz – at least i got the sat plan – my first game against the brews
see you on saturdays
how sentimental and lovely matt. how beautifully you put that.
now get to port st. lucie and pound some beers
Anyone know where i could find some clear
pics of the right field porch at citi field?
try mets.com or stadium page
baseball-fever.com
Matt, I hear ya, I hear ya. Must be sad to see..Hey have a good flight and see ya in Florida….
Mike
does anyone know if the mets will be licenseing j.j putz or murphy jersey’s this year??
not sure….you could always have the custom one’s made at mets.com, although that is ridiculously expensive.
true but i’d rather spend 89 bucks rather than 250 anyday
Matt, have a great time in PSL. Your spot last year on Johan’s changeup was one of the best written pieces coming out of any camp last year. It was awesome. I’d love to see a follow up maybe on Maine trying to re-learn his curveball.
Travel safe.
i had the same experience being in the car on gameday with my dad on the grand central and as it made the turn, you saw shea up ahead in the distance..it always gave me a jolt of excitement…we’ll miss ya shea
Drive past Shea every day to get to work. Kinda lookin forward to what I’ll be feeling going home tonight.
I noticed that it was all but gone taking the train to work this week and it kind of creeped me out… Born and raised in Flushing… It’s a weird feeling not seeing it there…like a friend moved away or something… Glad the new building’s easier on the eyes and an upgrade all around… It’s just weird not seeing all that blue there…
Progress on this site will be a day without the daily “shea is going away” story that waxes poetic about our inner-13-year-old.
Can we please move on already?
Matt post on Nov. 20, 2012:
“As I drive by Citifield, I can’t help but think that today is the 3rd anniversary of the day when they tore down Box 379 from the Loge 13 section…..”
Somebody tell Matt that the airport near Shea/Citi is LGA, not JFK!!!! Southern State / the Belt to JFK my friend. :-)
Except when you live in CT, genius.
Kind of bittersweet but new field, new team, new year. I’m excited….
The cool thing about Citifield is that its positioned in a way that you can see it from much farther away – from the GCP passing Laguardia or just off the LIE coming the other way. Shea was kind of hidden til you came right up next to it.
Plus Shea gave off no glow – hopefully Citi will. I can see the glow from Yankee Stadium every night from my place, which is not close. which is cool, except that I loathe the Yankees.
