News: Santana to miss Another Start

by Matthew Cerrone on February 28th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Update, 1:39 pm:

The Associated Press writes, “Johan Santana says that his opening day start could be in jeopardy as he continues to battle tightness in his elbow.”

According to the report, “Santana said he would need another two or three batting practice sessions with two days off in between before making his first Grapefruit League start.”

Original Post:

Johan Santana told reporters today that he has slight tendonitis above his left elbow, which will likely cause him to miss his first scheduled Grapefruit League start.

Santana met with team doctors and management earlier this morning.

So far, the team has given no indication that Santana will return to New York for an MRI, though it would not shock me if he were wisked away while the team and reporters were out of town covering a road game.

To learn more about Santana’s plan of attack, and road to recovery, check out David Lennon’s blog for Newsday and Adam Rubin’s blog for the Daily News.

Like I said yesterday, until he takes the mound in a game, and pitches pain free, I’m going to be worried, no matter how much the team tries to downplay this.
