In his talk with reporters following today’s game, Jerry Manuel said there is a ‘very good’ chance Santana pitches on Opening Day, though they will be ‘extra, extra cautious.’
Original Post:
Omar Minaya talked with reporters today in the clubhouse and said Johan Santana will not be going to New York for an MRI and x-ray of his left elbow.
Minaya said Santana felt good during and after this morning’s bullpen session, noting tomorrow’s snow storm in New York had a small impact on the decision as well.
Instead, Minaya explained, “He’ll be seen by our doctors when they com here…The main thing is he feels good.”

Johan Santana will be flying to New York on Monday to have his elbow examined by doctors.
…according to the team, it is just a precaution… however, when it’s santana, no language exists that can downplay such a trip…
Omar Minaya would not tell reporters what the examination will entail, though Santana will presumably have an MRI.
Nevertheless, Santana threw roughly 30 pitches in a bullpen session this morning and told reporters he feels ‘fine,’ seeing no reason why he will miss any regular season starts, including Opening Day.
Prior to the bullpen session, Santana long tossed from 100 feet, after which he warmed up from a shorter distance, before throwing his full-speed bullpen session, during which he used his fastball and change up.
Santana said yesterday that doctors told him the triceps tendon has been causing stiffness in his pitching elbow.
…the key here will be, does the elbow stiffen up again following today’s bullpen session…
Update, 12:13 pm:
Speaking to reporters earlier today, Dan Warthen said Santana looked good, throwing 35 pitches at 80– to 85–percent effort.
Warthen said he is relieved, and he thinks Santana was rushing back earlier in the spring to try to prepare for the WBC,
