In a poll for the Philadelphia Inquirer, when asked which Mets collapse rates as the ‘most colossal,’ 51 percent of Phillies fans said, ‘The one coming in 2009,’ while 40 percent said 2007, and 8 percent said 2008.
…silly phillies… laugh it up while you can…
Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors writes a guest post for Spring Training 09 in which he looks at the 44 worst contracts in baseball.
Nik Kolidas from Kiner’s Korner has posted a personal collection of old school, Mets photographs.
Lastly, at the Daily Stache, Michael posts an authentic Tryout Letter from the Mets, which was sent to his friend in the early 80s.

It’s all New York, all the time down in Philly.
I just watched a bunch of Philly fans tear up there town after the WS win last year on a program called “Rampage”. All I could think was “seems about right, Philly fans destroy their city….. in NY we just have parades”
Phillies fans are more excited about the idea of a Mets collapse than a Phillies World Series victory.
Truly pathetic.
Agreed Prismo. Instead of asking what is the outlook for the Phillies season, “lil brother” continues to be fixated on “big brother”. Man, if my team won the World Series, the first thought would be repeating. But what do I know…I’m just a Met fan of October baseball!
*Sorry, I meant to say, “I’m just a Met fan with October baseball on my mind!”
C’mon now, let’s be fair. There’s a ton of Philly talk on here too. I highly doubt your average Phillies fan is more concerned with the Mets than a WS win. Also, you gotta admit that poll is pretty funny.
What is going to worse is when the WS Champion Phillies title is taken away from them by the METS. I dont understand what the phillies fans have to be so obsesed over the METS for? It is truly pathetic and I feel very sorry for them. I dont care what happens with any team other than the METS. I would have been happy to see the Phillies loose, only because the RAYS where a true underdog story, but, in th eend it really dont matter to me and life goes on. All I can say to those phillie fans is GET A LIFE!!!!
wow its conforting knowing the phillies cannot relish in their accomplishment of winning the world series but rather would preoccupy themselves about the METS collapse which the phillies played NO part in it other than to serve as the beneficiaries. We got beat by the marlins..not the phills. It took a collapse of that magnitude for the phills to even REACH the postseason…how much does that say about their team. We basically handed you two post season berths..you guys in no way dominated the mets but rather were in the right place at the right time.
Way to go DirtySanchez. Let’s play some ball…let the Philatios earn a berth into the playoffs.
Well said.
to be fair, they were already locked into the playoffs in 2008, so the Mets poor finish only helped the brewers.
2007 I still try to block out of my memory, but was that a year where the Phils would not have even made the WC? If not, the mets really didn’t do much for them that year either (considering they forgot to even show up for the playoffs)
Way to STICK IT TO THEM DIRTY, THE FACTS NEVER LIE.
I guess it’s just me but I don’t care at all what the Phillies players, manage ment, columnist, fans, or other ignorants have to say about the Mets.
Why when we have so much to talk about should we waste our time on the Phillies. It’s almost silly that we are taking time out of our day to complain about the Phillies making comments about us.
its probably going to be another slow news day today…..
Even on a slow news day, though, there’s still plenty of Mets related topics to talk about the don’t involve the dirty city to our south. To me, everything they say is a non-story anyway.
Can’t wait for opening day!
I totally agree TRS….I just do not care about the Phils, the Yanks, ARod or Bonds or Clemens, etc.
I am very excited about what should be a very good year for us.
I must admit though, I do root for the Knicks to lose…gotta have my Nets finish ahead of them for the 8th straight year….
How dare you! Go Knicks!
Haha! I must admit, though, that the Knicks may finally be going in the right direction. Maybe.
But, if we miss the playoffs and get luck with draft position, and Thorn can work another miracle trade, we will be right back in the top 4 seeds in the east next year. Hopefully.
Isiah Thomas was truly one of the all-time great college and pro players, but as a businessman, coach, and executive, he really has got to have one of the all-time most horrible resumes.
As a Knick fan Brock, must say to my surprise
Walsh has done a great job turning over the
roster and clearing cap space(so far).
I for one hope they DONT get the 8 spot
and are back in the lotto. I’m not convinced
D’antonis style can win big but theyre def
going in the right direction!
The Nets are a long ways away from actually contending for a title. When Bron comes to NYC, the Knicks will be right there. I feel bad for fans of teams like the Nets, sure being ‘top 4′ in the conference is dandy but seriously, you need big time players to win in the NBA and the Nets aint close.
Boscov—
LeBron ain’t coming to the Knicks, and as a Knick fan, check the last decade for a serious reality check.
The Knicks are–seriously—about the very worst franchise in pro sports over the last 8 years.
The philles have nothing better to do right now. It’s like us met fans, we have nothing better to do then rag on the Phillies.
Baseball on any importance for most people is in on a 2 week hiatus because of the WBC. Personally i don’t care about it at all, i’ll follow along, but could care less who wins or loses, as long as the Mets players make it out incident free.
Incident and injury free. :-)
WHO CARES WHAT THE PHILLY FANS THINK???? I KNOW I DON’T!
It’s probably easy for you to say that, but I work with multiple Phillies fans who won’t shut their mouths and stop trashtalking.
Phillies have become the Red Sox of the National League. They have a New York fascination (obsession) and the only thing that matters to them is beating us, nothing else matters.
I spent 8 years in New England and witnessed this first hand. in 2007 when the Red Sox were up 10 games in the division, their fans were literally losing interest and calling in to radio stations “It just doesn’t seem the same or as fun with the Yankees so far out of it”
Have a little more respect for the Red Sox. The Phillies don’t even have the dignity that the Red Sox do.
Dignity? Dignity? There is none… Trust me. All of you bash Yankee fans… well the Red Sox fans are Yankee fans, but with less history. Before they won the world series, they were cocky and arrogant, now they are unbearable.
Even still their only obsession is the Yankees. At the Celtics Championship parade, they chanted “Yankees Suck”, at the Patriots Superbowl parades they chanted “Yankees Suck”, at the Red Sox parades they chanted “Yankees Suck”, at Paw Sox games, Boston Bruins games, Providence Bruins games, Providence Friars games, Lowell Spinners games, it takes very little to provoke a “Yankees Suck” chant.
They are the absolute kings of little brother syndrome. They celebrated Yankee losses like a Red Sox championship.
slightly off topic, this weekend, i kept seeing a commercial for some tv show thats on either discovery channel or history channel or something thats all about mob mentality and rioting and stuff like that, and the entire commercial is all scenes from philly after they won the world series last year.
anyone else see that?
Here it is:
9 p.m. Monday, the Discovery Channel will feature the post-World Series celebration in Philadelphia on their show “Rampage! Riot Rampage 2.”
But I think that might have aired last night? I didn’t check….
I just hope the mets can pull through and prove the Phillies wrong…I REALLY hate those guys…
Their newspaper had this as a poll?
pathetic
just keeps feeding into the inferiority complex…they prob will be saying the mets are the favorites this year so they won’t feel like they have a target on their backs
excited to see them as the ” hunted “this year…
That;s what we need… we need to be the hunter… not the hunted. In 2006 we had something to prove… all year long all we said was that the Braves were the team to beat… and they would stay like that until someone beat them… well now it’s time to hunt down the Phillies… you want to shut them up? Beat them.
Then they can go back to rationalizing and saying “Well we never collapsed!” but it won’t matter… because we will have won
What can you expect from those nit wits?
These are the same people who for years
booed Mike Schmidt, Santa Claus and now
Donovan McNabb. They also twice elected
John Street as Mayor. As of you know anything
about John Street? He is like a cross b/t
Rev. Al Sharpton & Charles Barron.
Any of you spend anytime in Philly lately?
Talk about a filthy, crime ridden dump!
I’ve been to Met-phillie games each of the
last three seasons there, the hoodlum
ticket scalpers walk around like they own
the place. This while “security”-limited as it
is rides around.concerned the you may have
a can of beer INSIDE your car.
The only fans worse than phillie fans
are yankee fans. With cubbie fans not far
behind!
Youy know what, fellas? We gotta grin it and bear it. It truly sucks being a die hard fan because though we have absolutely no say in how well a team performs, we get hit the hardest and feel it the worst when its all said and done. Think Glavine’s statements in Sept. 2007. How many times have you actually had a bad night of sleep because our team lost a heartbreaker? Because the Mets blew it for the 2nd straight yr to a despised rival, we gotta accept it and accept everything that comes along with it, especially these ignorant, and obsessive polls. Lets hope to a sucessful 2009, brothers.
I hope Matt is feeling better soon and I thank him for the GREAT site and the amazing job he did in FL. I really appreciate his “Links” posts as keeps me up on the information thats out there, however Id like to propose that for the rest of spring, unless something big happens we make this a
“Philly Free” blog. Meaning, lets keep all Philly related news (again, unless something meaningful to on the field baseball) out of here. I cant stand their ignorant fanbase/media outlet and their obvious NY obsession.
The Mets, and by extension us as fans, need to focus straight ahead on 2009. What happened in 2008 (in baseball) is the same as caring about the 1908 baseball season. its irrelevant
LETS GO METS!

wow, that was dumb bro.. if pretty much u got the same players u think they all of the sudden are gonna forget about it?? i think not.. unless we have a 6 games lead with 5 games to go WE WILL not be safe.. we are the biggest chokers in baseball history, as being the only team with 2 3 game lead in 2 straight sept and not make the playoff either year
thanks for the constructive reply bro……
go back and re-read my post, im not saying to ignore the phillies. im just saying to leave stuff like this off the board for the duration of the spring so we can concentrate on the METS. seeing as this is METSBLOG.
Jaded:
sorry if i offended you, but i agree we need to focus on the mets, but we can’t ignore the fact that they mock us based on our performance down the stretch the past 2 years, not only them but HISTORY & MLB.. we are this decade chokers like the angels were in the 90’s.. but worst..
alex man, why do you make posts like this?!
We DO NOT have the same team, we signed two excellent closers to pitch the 8th and 9th! That is a HUGE difference which will almost certainly make our team dramatically better.
And we are not the biggest chokers in history, the 64 Phils are. The 2007 Mets may be 2nd.
Don’t you enjoy the Mets and aren’t you psyched for the season??
QUESTION,
Who’s the only team with 2 “3 game lead in 2 straight sept” and not make the playoff either year??
ANSWER,
THE NEW YORK METS
OK, man, we look at things very differently, and I do like and respect you and I especially appreciate your sense of humor.
And I WILL be waiting for your apology to Alex Cora when he helps lead us to the postseason this year….
…and they wonder why we consider them bush.
Alex,
I hear ya brother, its pretty embarrasing to think about. Which is why i’d rather not discuss/think about it during the rest of spring as it just irks me. I have enough stuff at work that irks me haha, i come here to smile and think baseball and get away from all that negative thought shenanigans.
Correction alex, the greatest collapse in
baseball(regular season)history was by
the phillies themselves! The ‘64 team
was up 6and a half games withjust 12 to
play and finished ina second place tie,
a game back. Worst post season is of course
the 2004 yankees!
Fongu:
i never said we had the biggest collapse, but as monumental as the phillies in 64 i agree.. with that being said look what i post above, just like them we made history in the gaggers book.
Agreed Fong…the 64 Phils are number one.
Alas, the 07 Mets may be number 2.
And yes, I did enjoy the 04 postseason too….and let us not forget, the 86 Mets came back from several postseason deficits to win, game 6 in Houston, and the WS after being down 2–0 and heading on the road. And we were 7 games back with a month to play in 73….And yes, we lost to the Braves in 99, BUT we did come back to force a game 6 after being down 3–0, which is rare…so our history is not just one of choking…far from it…
1998 with 3 games to play, we lost ALL 3 games and miss the playoffs by 1 game.. sept 2005, we were 2 games behind in the wild card, lost 18 games and finish the season with an 83-79 record..
Ouch….I remember 98…that was brutal..but, we did make the NLCS in 99 and the WS in 00….so, 2009 will be like a combo of 99/00 AND 86, after we missed the playoffs barely in 84 and 85…..
oh man, i hope you are right.. i don’think all you good hearted mets fans will stand us guys when we be coming up here saying “i told you so” and “fire omar” chants and “we should’ve gotten manny” posts all over the blog..
Maybe #2 but the ‘87 Blue Jays are contenders as well. Frankly, for all my joking
THIS is why I was at the front of the Manny
bandwagon. In addition to what he brings on
the field,he certainly helps w/keeping a team
loose. As It became clear pretty quickly we
were’nt in on that, I really hoped Omar would
sign a Kevin Millar both for his part-time Righty bat @ 1B,3B,L&RF AND for his ability
to just forget about yesterday, stay loose and
go out and play today!
Thoughts on Esteban German who KC DFAd?-I for one am not convinced yet w/Castillo and know Omar has been interest
in this guy before.
yes, i like him and i still believe he’s got upside.. but if not him i’ll be fine with that guy with dreadlocks who’s a free agent..
And what everyone(including many Met fans-
-forget) Down 3-0 in game 7 halfway through
the game to come back and win the series.
I remember!
And I remember Keith’s HUGE hit, and Darryl and Ray Knight’s homers, and Sid’s 2+ innings of great relief like they were yesterday….
But with that team, down 3–0 in the 6th, did you doubt at all that we were going to win??
Ya know Brock, its very funny you ask that question because I was just talkin’ to my
fiancee after finally watching a DVD she bought me for Christmas on both the ‘69&’86
Championship teams.I told her that I could
CLEARLY remember NOT being nervous
at 3-0 in gm 7. Now if it had gotten to the 8th
well maybe then. But there was no doubt–
And I don’t say it lightly-That as we won
gm 6, rain out the next day or not, we were
gonna win game 7.There was no doubt in my
mind that Mex,The Kid and/or Ray Ray would
do SOMETHING to make sure we’d win!
Totally agree! After we won Game 6, I knew the series was ours…and yes, Keith did make an out in the 10th inning if Game 6, but when he came up in the bottom of the 6th in Game 7 with the bases loaded, I think I would have bet my life that he would get a hit. One of the biggest hits in Met history, no doubt!
It’s funny, every time I watch the bottom of the 10th in Game 6, which I have many, many times, I swear, I get nervous watching Carter, Mitchell and Knight hit! It is like I am afraid one of them will strike out and the Red Sox will storm the field! But it has never happened yet……
Thats funny! I recall that night thinking about
both work and night school the following day.
I was the only Met fan at either place and thinking about the abuse I’d take the next day
wasn’t gonna be fun! I really didn’t start to
believe until the wild pitch but once we tied
it, I started feelin’ pretty good.
Stunned disbelief REALLY did describe
my initial emotions as that ball got past Buckner. It pretty quickly turned to being so
over joyed,I do remember a few tears rollingdown each cheek. THATS when it
came to me”yeah its 3-3 but were actually-
-gonna win this thing”.
Dude, its been a long-long time!
Many,many lives ago!
This is why i can be very harsh on
omar, the wilpons and some of my fellow
Met fans. SO MUCH as happen in the 22 yrs
since, Marriage,Death,Life,Jobs,Careers,
Moves both to diff parts of the County AND
ther Countries, Good buisness moves,
bad ones,taxes, life-threatening accidents/
injuries and personal happiness again.
BUT no other Championships.
I’m 44 man and it was literally half mylife ago, Like your kid, we’ll never abandon the Mets
BUT is it too much to ask of them to stop
disapointing us? And REALLY try their best.
Really well-said Fong, seriously.
And for me, Games 6 and 7 were especially sweet, as being in Vermont, I was surrounded by Red Sox fans…I watched Game 6 in a huge room with about 25 people, and ONE other Met fan! They were all jumping up and down just like Clemens, and they got quieter and quieter as Carter, Mitchell and Knight each got their hits…then, when we tied it, they all knew it was over. They were all even totally downcast in Game 7 with the 3–0 lead…they knew what was coming.
And I am 42, and that is my only real championship..too young to remember 69 (I do remember how sad and angry my Dad was in 73 though)…and I am a Dolphin and Net fan, and wasn’t into football enough to appreciate 72 and 73, and the 82 Dolphins SB loss still kills me—if Don McNeal could have just dragged Riggins down on that 4th down play they show EVERY year! And those damn 2003 Nets….blew that lead in Game 6 in San Antonio….
But the 86 Mets are so special. I thought we had it again in 06, and I am feeling VERY good about this coming year.
Amen!, I too was too young to remember
1969 and actually became a Met fan during
the ‘73 series although to this day the mid 70s A’s teams are some of my favorites.
I think back though over the yrs and believe
it was mostly because my Dad and his brothers looked like Rudi,Tenace&Fingers.
Pretty funny! Starting the ‘74 season,I was
fully on board. My football experiences haven’t
been nearly as bad as yours though because
I’ve been a Steeler fan since ‘72 mostly
because of my late cousin who was my best
friend as a kid. As a long time die-har Knick fan, I’ve also never really experienced a Championship since I didn’t really start to
follow the sport closely until 74-75 when I
started to play which I did through college.
Lets no forget that the Phillies last won the world series on the backs of two former METS, Lenny’ nails” Dystra and thlate Great Tug “ya gotta beleive” McGraw. So take that.
Well, Tug was a huge part of that 1980 team, but Lenny was in high school that year….
I never saw a fan base and team so completely obsessed with another team (not even in their own city).
And I WILL be waiting for your apology to Alex Cora when he helps lead us to the postseason this year….”
kingman, i will change my screen name to AlexCoraismyhero if he helps in any way for us to reach the playoffs,
HAHA!! I WILL remember that my friend!
lol, well now u know, and don’t worry ALL year the only signin omar made to upgrade the offense will be reminded here by me.. i’m sure of that
the 44 worst contracts in baseball has now real validity. The have Carlos Lee at #2. He has had MVP like numbers since signing that contract.
Just because wsomeone makes alort doesnot mean its a bad contract
justin,
he’s not #2, they actually go by team’s name, if u see the first is by the arizona guy, no way zito isn’t the worst.. check again and you will see is by order alphabetic of the team that the player play for
I actually meant hes second on the page, but regardless I would not say thats that bad of a contract. Its about the same as beltran with similar production.
Oh, my fault, but idk about beltran and lee production, beltran can do so much more than lee to alternate the result of a game, via his defense, speed, offense, pretty much lee can do it with his bat, and if u take it from his shoulder by walking him u have to depend on someone else to come trough..
True but his bat added to any line up would greatly improve that lineup. Based on the new market he is over priiced, but I would want him before someone such as Dun or Abreu. Id even compare him to Delgado with less of an upside.
personally i went from being pretty pessimistic w/omars lack of addressing
the OF to becoming pretty optimistic once
camp began in full, heck isnt that what baseballs all about? TO getting pretty pessimistic again with this Johan thing.
With him,its us and the Phils as the only teams in the east who can win 90-95gms
w/o him(God forbid)we’re more like an 85win
team and that aint gonna get us to the playoffs.B/T/W, Watch for a quick start by the Braves who have a very easy schedule the
first month of the season. In the end though
they’re no better than a .500 team.
agree with everything except it doesn’t take johan being out for us to win 85 games, that with him might happen, the same way that if our offense produce like last year and the bullpen holds up we can win 90 to 95 games..
Maybe my friend BUT If Johan gives us 30starts,he’ll go 18-6 and along w/Pelf,
Ollie and Maine(provided ofcourse all healthy)
Our starters will go deep into every game.
KRod may blow up in time BUT it wont be
this year. I think Putz is,well Putz again and
with this not only will just about every lead
late will be safe BUT any tied game should
belong to us after the starters are gone.
What was it like 7or8 games last yr Johan
left after 7 and didn’t get the win?
That won’t happen again. Now we may
struggle at times w/the offense when
our big 4 aren’t all clicking so there may be
alot of 2-1/3-2 type games but atleast
they’ll be safe after 6/7 innings.
i wouldn’t say safe but over last season they can be called SAFER…
Like i said over the yrs i’ve become pretty
pessimistic about my Mets But if I cant be
optimistic about Putz/Rodriguez at the back
end of games, well then I cant be optimistic
about anything. Its not like omar went out and
got us Gregg and Fuentes where you’d think
wow this could really work out well.
Putz/KRod is along the thought lines of
wow this SHOULD work out REAL well.
All we need is pitching health and
we’re a 90-95 win team.
What is so funny is that after 2 years of horrid finishes teams don’t give us the time of day which is fine by me.
I say it because don’t you feel this year even the players and the buzz round camp is it’s personal. There is a respect factor that is lacking toward us (Mets) more than ever.
“The Core” seems to be so focused on righting their past failures that as I write this I am getting goosebumps at how special this year can really be.
So let them have their fun and we will see who has the last laugh indeed.
“GO METS”
LET’S FINISH WHAT WE STARTED IN 2006!!!
Changing the topic for a moment,
It’s a little disconcerting that the Mets will not subject Johan to an MRI exam.
If there is something wrong we can then take the necessary measures to insure no further damage takes place.
However, without an MRI we are simply speculating and taking a massive risk that Yohan is indeed ok.
This is not quantum physics, it is simply an exercise in common sense, I’m certain that if this was the Braves organization Johan would have had an MRI already.
Let’s not take any chances with our ace or our season for that matter, I implore the powers that be to step in and do the right thing.
