In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin profiles Mets 22-year-old pitching prospect Brad Holt, who the Mets drafted using a compensatory draft pick from losing Tom Glavine to the Braves.
Holt led the New York-Penn League in ERA, strikeouts per nine innings and opponent’s batting average last season.
According to Rubin, ‘Holt should now begin making limited Grapefruit League appearances on loan from the minor-league side, now that so many player are missing for the WBC.
…i was able to speak with a team executive while in St. Lucie, and when the topic of minor leaguers came up, holt’s name jumped from the guy’s mouth… he also mentioned Jenry Mejia as some one to keep an eye on…
…also, i talked briefly with holt, during the team’s prospect autograph signing… i asked him to scout himself, and, while he spoke proudly of other pitches, his teammates heckled him the entire time yelling from behind him, ‘fastball, fastball, all he throws is a fastball,’ which holt seemed to be embarrassed about…
Holt was ranked the team’s fourth-best prospect by Adam Rubin and Baseball America, as well as John Sickels of MinorLeagueBlog.com, and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus.
Speaking of prospects, MetsMerized Online takes a closer look at 23–year-old RHP Dillon Gee, who has the best change-up in the organization, according to Baseball America.

It’s nice hearing GOOD things about our farm system for a change.
AMEN to that. I have to agree. The system is also better than advertised. We graduate “nonprospects” in Murphy and Evans who appear to have some promise or are at least parts to what would be a good team. The highly thought of guys short of Fmart all being in the lower levels now but its all coming soon. Might make flipping a guy like Church or Maine more acceptable down the line when we have a Niese and Fmart and Holt coming fast
Love hearing that Holt is thought of as being further along than Pelfrey was at that time. I hope they take their time with Holt and dont rush him. They moved Pelfrey a bit too fast and his ML career started really slowly as a result. This guy if he has the potential to be a frontline guy should advance his other pitches further than Pelf did before getting a call up here.
Now we just need to create a hybrid of Dillon Gee and Brad Holt, so that “Dillon Holt” has both the best fastball and the best changeup in the system.
This is not a complaint about Gee or Holt, just dreaming a little.
A right-handed version of Johan.
alot of hype building around holt and (ill call it now) the G-train…..hopefully they pan out.
PURE GAS… this guy i feel is gonna be our roy oswalt..
Well hopefully Holt can focus this year on trying to include some kind of offspeed/breaking pitch otherwise he will fall victim to the john maine’s disease of foul balls.
Looking foward to seeing both Pitch w/The
Bingo Mets atleast for the first half this year.
by ‘best changup in the organization’, i hope you mean the minor leagues, cuz there is a soon-to-be 30-year old venezualan who would definately take exception to that assertion

haha that was my thought as well!
good take #15.. but i’m sure he meant as a prospect.. holt doesn’t have the best fastball in the roster either, but i’m sure as a mets prospects coming up he does..
id like to echoe the sentiments of atrain, its great to hear positive things about our farm system!
in recent years i’ve been reluctant to get excited about some of the reports on our better prospects. milledge looks to be a bust and fmart has been slow to develop (i know hes still young). let’s just hope pelfrey defies the verducci rule and becomes a rock in the rotation…
I don’t know what people determine to be a bust. Milledge was by no means a BUST. In his first full year in the Majors (530 AB’s) hitting .270 14 HR 61RBI and 68 Runs with 24 SB seems to be a solid first showing for a Player who is turning 24 this year.
Even Carlos’s Gomez .258 Average was a very good showing with the superior defense he added in CF for the Twins. People want every prospect to be a Star.
The problem with the Mets is they have rushed their players to the extent that they hit the Majors Very young, and if there is no immediate success they are considered Busts by us Fans.
valid points. touche
He is still pretty young.
My fear is that they will cast Holt as a reliever when he clearly needs to be developed as a starter. He can always be a closer later on. He will have much more value and potential as a starter so just give him time.
I am actually affraid we are already doing it with Parnell.
i though parnell has been projected as a middle-relief type for a while…?
But why? The kid is still young. A #5 starter is much more valuable than a middle reliever. He has shown some potential as a starter, he can always be a middle reliever later. He’s worth more to take an extra 1-2 years in AAA as a starter and see what happens.
i agree with you in principle. i don’t know why, but then again i am not a scout and don’t get to see the guy play on a regular basic so i can’t really claim any authority on the matter
I think almost all pitchers should be pegged as starters at a young age. It seems a lot easier to make them successful bullpen guys then vice versa. Plus, you can never have enough starting pitching in the system – whether it be for depth or for trades.

STEVE HOLT!
We’ll see what the Mets’ development system can do with his arm. Seems like a lot of attrition with our guys, though at least Pelfrey finally got straightened out.
Assuming they don’t destroy his mechanics and ligaments, I’m excited — a steady stream of young pitching is a sure road to sustained success.

the only sure road to sustained success is keeping luis castillo on the roster. at some point or another, we need to start thinking about a contract extension. 2012 will be here before we know it.
HAHA!!
I love it whenever you hear good things about prospects but as the saying goes
“Talk Is Cheap”
It’s time we start seeing Minaya’s farm system bear some All-Star fruit. Hopefully Pelfrey & Murphy can be the 1st with Fmart & Holt not far behind.
Today was my first time checking out the Mets Minor League Blog done by Toby. Nice work indeed.
Looks like some deadend positions like catcher and 2B could very well be replaced by inhouse solutions in the future. Very incouraging news about Havens and Pena. Sure we will most likely have to have a stopgap at catcher and maybe ride out Castillo but there looks to be light at the end of the tunnel.
I know that most prospects don’t work out, but the good news is that it is 2B and Catcher which are not traditionally strong offensively anyway. You don’t have to find a star just a league average guy with potential.
Holt? Who goes there?
hey! i was the first one that came up witht hat! loll i have to start copyrighting $hit
Havens, he has stud written all over him.
the thing is his stupid stance hinders his power. keeps his hands way to low
