The Mets have a Major League high 15 players participating in the World Baseball Classic this spring.
The following is a quick update on the progress of a few Mets players in the WBC:
- Oliver Perez allowed two runs on one hit and a walk over 2.1 IP in Mexico’s exhibition game versus the Diamondbacks.
- Carlos Beltran went 1-for-3, while Carlos Delgado was held hitless in three at-bats in Puerto’s 2-to-1 win over the Rays last night.
- David Wright was 0-for-2 as Team USA’s DH.
- J.J. Putz allowed three runs on three hits in 0.2 IP in Team USA’s 6-to-5 loss to the Blue Jays yesterday.

those stats all suck! maybe they all shoulda stayed in Mets camp. those stats might have something to do with those national teams playing year round and our boys are just getting into shape. either way i hope they all come back sooner than later. let australia win!
Maybe the WBC should be at the end of the season or some other time during the year…
Perez played against the Dbacks.
Beltran and Delgado against the Rays
Putz against the Jays.
Don’t think this comment works.
Multiple NL Gold glove winner Davis Wright is the DH?
Yes I also find this amusing.
I guess seniority rules. Chipper is 3B.
too bad that doesnt applly to ss as hanley is getting the nod over reyes but i think reyes is older
only by a few months, but im guessing its just a team USA thing
Reyes got the nod over Hanley the first day … and Wright also played 3rd the first day. They are just taking turns, that’s all.
yea but this is like pre-WBC. During the real WBC , i heard hanley is the guy…
Are you sure that’s set in stone? Maybe Hanley is he DH and Ortiz plays first.
So are they going to just sit Jose? That would stink. I can’t see them wasting his talent like that.
Jose deserves to start at short.
If i remember correctly, in 2006, Jose got barely any playing time.
agreed…it would be nice to get them both out there. I just hope reyes gets his ab. Actually come to think of it im wrong…tejada is getting the starting spot….idk i just hope reyes gets some action or it will be a waste and can hurt the mets.
baby wright hasn’t got a hit yet..
alex, he doesn’t want to waste any clutch hits on the damn WBC….
:-)
WHAT!!!….Brock i dont know what planet you live on but here on earth…wright is not capable of clutch hits as evidence of last september….what club have you been watching???
;p
Well, of course you are right sir!
I just figured that, in the EXTREMELY unlikely event that he DID get a clutch hit, it sure would be a shame to waste it in a March exhibition game…..
ahh i see ur point.. as much as he lacks them he may need them come september
what is your problem…really…”baby wright”….whats that? oh i guess your mad that your boy reyes is the most “unclutch” player we havee….jealously is a bad emotion my friend
Just so I am clear, you are trying to get back at Alex by denigrating our starting SS? Is that right?
see, he makes no sense?? lol.. jesus.
Exactly, why not be happy that we have both Wright and Reyes. Two of the best young players in the game. They both, however, have their shortcommings. Especially considering THEIR team has not gotten it done for 2 years in a row. You can’t BLAME Wright for not hitting in the clutch when Reyes continues to hit below .250 in September. It’s the team’s fault. Not one individual.
jesus, some ppl can’t even joke anymore.. and how am i jealous of david wright?? specially becoz of reyes is uncl-utch, please i’d take reyes and his dancing over mr quote himself baby wright.. and if u don’t like the name ask me what even means before going nu-ts hjhjhjhj
nope….sorry…reyes is the reason….he is culprit and why we collapsed the last two seasons..if anyone on the team is a baby its reyes…he is completely immature on the field, lets his bad O get in the way of his D all the time…let face it, he is good but not close to being great
You are both knuckleheads.
lol, man, i call david wright baby becoz of how mets fans and some media members baby him, that’s all, i love wright, heck i even like cora, but that doesn’t mean that when is time for me to attck them if they failed i won’t
and u make my point even clearer as to who’s more important to the team.. reyes struggle and we collpase baby wright was great and we STILL COLLAPSE..
come on now if you look at the numbers and i dont know lets pick a game like #158, where reyes popped up with two on and no one out…i mean we have to blame him sense….well we just have to….if it wasnt for reyes the mets would have been in the playooffs for the last two seaons…period…
Alex, so now you are saying that Wright chokes but it does not matter because Reyes chokes before he can get there?
hjhjhj
if i agree then u HAVE to admit that reyes is more VALUABLE than baby??
TRS:
reyes is the convertible, and baby wright is the engine that drives him in.. without u buying the convertible u won’t have AN ENGINE!!
if i agree then u HAVE to admit that reyes is more VALUABLE than baby??
Everyone knows Reyes is more valuable. He is a lead off hitter, a great fielder, and can steel bases… as he goes do the mets… third basemen are easier to find.
really…so if its so easy to find 3b, how come there are 23 ss in the HOF and only 13ss…i guess because they are a “dime a dozen”….sorry reyes would sitting on third if it wasnt for DW…there is a reason run producers make more money than leadoff hitters…because they are more valuable by what they do…remember speed slows down quicker than power in this game
23 ss and only 13 3b
alex, I meant my comment as a good-natured joke…I swear I did….
And I LOVE Jose AND Wright.
LOL,i know u did, but look at what u starter.. i HATE U.. lol jk..
Heilman would have allowed those 3 runs on one hit!
HAHA!!
I love the thought of the WBC, but I hate to see 15 guys competing in games rather than going through their regular preseason routine. Additionally, it makes the actual preseason games a whole lot less interesting (unless you like to see Ramon Martinez starting at 3rd).
yea i hear ya but i guess a conforting note is that they had to get ready alot earlier this year than most so they kinda already did their preseason routine…just a month earlier. I think of the WBC as a more intense ST.
we didnt fare too bad as a team in 2006 (for the most part)
We need the WBC for the playoffs…we havent been since!!!
loll agreed starz..i thought the same thing this year. Hopefully we can conjure some of the old 06 wbc magic and finish the job this time.
shame too…cause with that logic johan should be pitching in the WBC, he hasn’t won a Cy young since!
The thought of the WBC is brilliant. The execution and the scheduling is horrendous and silly. This makes me not take that big of an interest. To me it’s a silly competition where the eventual winner is pointless. It has the same effect on me as the BCS in college football Their idea is good to have a world competition, but the eligibility rules or lack there of take everything away from me making it almost unwatchable except to root for Mets players.
its a tough position. Its a great theory especially b/c of MLB missing out on the Olympics…its just that theres no real good answer to when is it best for scheduling. teams wouldn’t want it in the middle of the season (like NHL and olympics, which is awesome btw) and after the season, you have non-playoff players sitting for month before…and before the season, it puts the pitchers at risk.
we’ll see how this one plays out b/c it’ll be instrumental in determining the long-term success of this tourney.
I agree the Scheduling is very difficult, and really i don’ t know the answer, but i would be for shutting down the MLB for 2-3 weeks in mid summer, cancel the all-star game and play the WBC once every 4 years. At least pitchers and players wouldn’t be pushing themselves to early.
The real Main problem i have is the LAX rules on the eligibility. Like AROD playing for the dominican, or the last one Piazza playing for Italy. HUH you were born in the US you live in the US your US citizens, yet because you heritage is another country you get to play there? UMMMM everyone in the US’s heritage, except native americans of coarse, is from another country, so in theory there could be no US team by these rules.
That’s my main issue. If your a US citizen you play for US or nobody, not flipping around willy nilly because you feel like it, or won’t play on US.
Preach it Mark. 100 years ago those players would have been proud to play for the US instead of their former country.
I realize it’s spring training, but I was still surprised that AZ played 6 regulars and started Brandon Webb yet got destroyed by Mexico 19-5.
wow 19 runs? So they really are aiming for the fences. J/K
LMAO!!!!!
Well played.
hahaha
HAHAHA!!!
Fellas, Nothing to worry about w/the
likes of Putz or for the D-Backs w/Webb.
At this point in Spring these guys are still
just tossing it up there, getting their arms
ready for the season.
lmao….so wrong but sooo funny.
nothing is more wrong than your name, lol
LOL!!!
touche my friend loll….but shhh there are kids that come here man…let em think im reffering to duaner ok ;p lol j/k
Wrong how? You think 2/3 weeks into S.T.
Pitchers are anywhere close to being ready
as they will in another month?
What the heck are you thinking?
he was talking about dirty.
fon … read graves post again…its a joke. Think about it…”aiming for the fences….”…team mexico…..
I got it!
These Mets sure need to “get on the same page”! They’re all playing for different countries!
Off topic:
I recorded the Japan vs China game this morning. Yu Darvish is a must when he is eligible to come to the MLB.
6-5 175 only 22 years old, mid-90’s fastball, can dial it up to 97, with a plus slider. Very quick and nimble off the mound, very Santana-like. And at only 22, he looks like he’s ready to face MLB hitters.
I agree, didn’t he try to come stateside this year? But we all know he will end up in Seattle, Boston or the Yankees.
No, I beleive he couldn’t have come this year. Too young. But when he does, the Mets better bid, and bid high!
whenever he comes, itll break the Dice-k posting fee, no question IMO.
gotta be careful though…those Japenese pitchers log so many innings early in their careers. makes me nervous.
Isn’t he the guy who deliberately stayed in the Japanese minor leagues, because if he had gone to their majors he would have been restricted as to his ability to leave the country? Perhaps I’m thinking of someone else.
If he is subject to a posting fee, it will be ridiculous.
I don’t know…I thought he pitches for a major-league team their.
he’s the face of the league….maybe he did that early in his career.
No, but his first 4 seasons in Pro ball in Japan are pretty comparable, If not better than Dice-K’s.
That was meant to be posted below. He has been in the Japan Major leagues since he was 19, straight out of high school.
He was also suspended after he was drafted, before he even pitched, because he was caught smoking in a pachinko parlor.
Yu Darvish:
2007 – 15W 5L 26GS 12CG 3SHO 207.2IP 123H 48R 42ER 9HR 49BB 210K 1.82ERA
2008 – 16W 4L 25GS 10CG 2SHO 200.2IP 136H 44R 42ER 11HR 53BB 208K 1.88ERA
Metsin080910 — there was a great piece written about Darvish on ESPN.com about a year ago I think. Dude is a cultural phenom over in Japan and has downright nasty stuff. Should be the “dice-k” every body though Boston was getting, if he stays healthy.
The dude has lights out stuff. Granted he dominated China, but he made them look foolish and at 22 can only improve.
I don’t know how much better then Dice-K you can be. unless 18-3, 2.90 ERA, 154-94 k/bb and a 1.32 WHIP in your 2nd MLB season at the age of 28 is bad.
To think we almost had him, finishing 2nd in posting fees, we had a good offer, but Boston went crazy and beat us by 10-15 mil. He’d be nice in the NL. But then the “would we get Johan” game starts.
i know i was replying to the statement “Should be the “dice-k” every body though Boston was getting, if he stays healthy.”
Because Dice-K was flat out nasty last year.
Awful outing for JJ. Big-time failure in the closer spot. All I can say is get it out of your system now. We need you as the 8th inning guy.
Hanley isn’t even in the same universe defensively as Reyes.
get over it people reyes is not is the same class as reyes…at least hanley can hit in september…i mean he is so clutch…reyes obviously is garbage when it matters
?
Uh?
Please Stop!, You sound like one of the
5 members of the Marlins fan club.
Ramirez is a bad fielding SS that THEY
have been talking about moving to the
OF for 2 yrs now. Also, His next AB/Game
played under real pressure will be his
first. I just dont get some of my fellow
Met fans. No matter what weaknesses
Wright and Reyes may still have these
are two of the top three position players
we’ve ever developed, are still young enough
where they should improve and are good
guys. Any team would want these two as
the faces of their organization.
Yet all many fans do here is nit pick and
complain about why they’re not better.
Top 2 or 3 position players ever developed!!!! I’ll go one further they are #1 or #2 in their respective position in all of MLB!!!
I’ll go one further they are #1 or #2 in their respective position in all of MLB!!!
Relax mark4212…
Maybe not but easily top 5 and maybe top 3.
3rd base:
Arod (obvious)
Longoria, youkilis, Adkins, Armis Ramirez?
SS:
Hanley (arguable)
Rollins, Jeter, Micheal young, Stephen Drew, Peralta, Tejada?
Seriously Outside Arod at 3rd base, and Maybe Hanley at SS. How are they not #2 and i put 1 or 2 because you can argue Reyes is a better SS then Hanley is.
mark, Larry Jones would like you to know that he is very upset at having been left off your list. He will be posting at the Atlanta Journal Constitution blog under the name “You Know Who” about just how upset he is.
LOL Grave…. Ok Ok i should have put him in the second Grouping. Only problem is he gets hurt for 40-60 games every single year since 2004, only reason why i excluded him.
he said we….meaning the Mets have ever developed
so reyes is not reyes???? will the real Reyes please stand up?
The WBC is a joke and somebody on a high profile team is going to eventually get injured as a result.
Mark my words, should the Mets get off to a slow start many will blame the fact that 15 Met players ended up participating in this utterly meaningless event.
You can kiss the Reyes batting 3rd experiment goodbye because there simply isn’t enough time to see if that will gel.
Let the rest of the world participate. If you’re under contract by the MLB then you shouldn’t be allowed to. end of story.
There are plenty of castoffs like Bernie Williams and Moises Alou who you can reel in for the thing, just leave the MLB players out of it. please!
While i’m not sure there is any more liklihood of a player getting hurt in the WBC as a regular spring game, it is otherwise poorly scheduled and executed.
Would anyone object to this being played in November – like the Japan series every few years? And being played all over the World – not Spring Training facitilites?
It’s typical of Bud Selig – a small-market, small-minded loser.
