Note: Santana to Pitch BP Today

by Matthew Cerrone on March 7th, 2009 at 10:40 am

Update, 11:55 am:

Santana told reporters following his session that he felt ‘pretty good,’ and he no longer sees any reason why he would not be ready to pitch on Opening Day, April 6, in Cincinnati.

“From now on, we go one step at a time,” Santana said, noting he believes he is close to ready to pitch in a game.

Update, 10:40 am:

Santana took the mound around 10 am, threw 30 or so pitches in a two-inning simulated game, complete with a break between innings.

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Santana looked ‘great,’ while using his slider and change-up.

SNY will run footage today during the game broadcast on Ch.11.

The Mets have yet to announce Santana’s next outing.

Original Post:

Initially, Johan Santana was scheduled to throw another bullpen session today in St. Lucie.

Instead, he is scheduled to throw live batting practice around 10 am, meaning he’ll finally throw to live hitters for the first time this spring – five days ahead of what was said to be last week’s schedule.

regardless of what may end up being penciled in on paper in the clubhouse, assuming all goes well today, i have to think the next step for santana will be some sort of simulated game, then a real game, and if he keeps on trucking, he’d essentially be back on schedule…

Health: Injury Update on 7 Players

by Matthew Cerrone on March 7th, 2009 at 9:16 am

Ramon Martinez will miss today’s game with a hand injury.

Ryan Church fouled a ball off his knee during a game in Viera, and has missed the last two games.

from what i can gather, church is able to pinch hit today, but in all likelihood he will return to the lineup on sunday

Luis Castillo will sit today and rest his sore hamstring – Jerry Manuel told reporters yesterday he is just being extra careful with Castillo.

similar to church, the word from St. Lucie is the castillo will likely return to the lineup on sunday

OF Angel Pagan did not play yesterday, and is not in today’s starting lineup, with a sore right elbow.

Mets prospect Reese Havens was scratched from yesterday’s game with a strained left hamstring.

Tom Martin will miss the next week or so with a right calf injury.

According to the Daily News, ‘Martin wore a protective boot Friday morning in the clubhouse,’ though he says he’s feeling better.

Tim Redding will pitch one inning against the Univ. of Michigan tomorrow, during a split-squad game.

Buzz: Duaner in Danger of Losing Job

by Matthew Cerrone on March 7th, 2009 at 9:12 am

According to the New York Post, if the Mets release Duaner Sanchez by April 1, they can save three-fourths of his $1.6 million contract.

Yesterday, Sanchez walked two hitters, but did not allow a run, in one inning or work.

Following the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters Sanchez is competing for a spot to be on the team, adding:

“I don’t deal with money.  For me, it’s what’s best for the team, and there are some guys who are pitching very well right now that have to be considered… He’s got to pitch well and convince us that, hey, he’s the guy he was two years ago.”

i mean, duaner should be in competition, especially since he can’t seem to crack 90 with his fastball… he hasn’t been great, so what should he be guaranteed anything… nevertheless, i don’t g et the sense is in serious jeopardy of losing his job, because, have one conversation with some one from the team and you’ll realize they are counting on him to be there… in standard fashion, i believe jerry was just saying there is competition, nothing is a given, and every one has to work to be rewarded…

…you know, it must be hard for people who love conflict, knowing so much craziness is going on with the Yankees, and yet the most controversial thing in St. Lucie is that a relief pitcher is competing for a job, and an ace is maybe a week behind schedule
