News: Pagan to have Surgery, Out 6-8 Weeks

March 10, 2009 at 17:32 pm · 145 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Following today’s game, Mets GM Omar Minaya said Angel Pagan has decided to have surgery to repair a bone spur in his right elbow.

Pagan will have surgery in Manhattan on Wednesday, and is likely to be out for 6 to 8 weeks.

…man, pagan can’t catch a break… last season, he looked great in spring, cracked the roster, then cracked his shoulder and missed the rest of the season… this spring, again he was looking good, and likely to make the roster, now this… sorry, man…

Anthony-n-VA March 10, 2009 at 5:37 pm

except for the fact of Marlon batting LH

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:45 pm

hey sometimes we dont lets the facts get in the way

Gina March 10, 2009 at 5:38 pm

So this means reeds definitely making it right? Or else we’d have no back up center fielder.

TheBigStapler March 10, 2009 at 5:46 pm

That’s an interesting point, Gina, how much the defense factors in.

Of course, it isn’t just a matter of being a CF backup (Beltran plays a ton of games anyway), it’s a defensive replacement for the late innings in general. I’d say that spot is Reed’s to lose.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:49 pm

i think reed was always a given – kinda like sean green – cuz reed’s defense was equal to endy’s with allegedly a better bat

TheBigStapler March 10, 2009 at 5:55 pm

That trade at the Winter Meetings is getting a lot of mileage.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:57 pm

definitely one of omar’s best

Gina March 10, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Reeds defense definitely isn’t equal to endys. Not even close. He’s probably about average, slightly above average defensively, he’s just the only player other than Beltran we have, now that Pagan looks to be out, who could be average or better in center.

Also I always assumed since Reed had options, and I don’t think Pagan does, he’d probably end up in AAA at the beginning of the year and get called up based on how he does/other outfielders perform.

nrmax88 March 10, 2009 at 11:13 pm

You guys have to be kidding. Pagan doesn’t even play good defense. Just because he is fast doesn’t mean his defense is good. He takes crappy routes to balls and doesn’t get good breaks either. He has talent but has never put it together on either side of the ball and the guy just isn’t very good.

Gina March 10, 2009 at 5:57 pm

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:59 pm

gina im only going by what the beat writers were saying when the trade went down – i never saw him play so i really don’t know

SantanaClause March 10, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Wut about thinking outside the box and letting Church be the back up CF he has the defensive ability and I think (not positive) he might have done it before. This way all you need is a backup conner outfielder on the major league level.

Gina March 10, 2009 at 6:35 pm

You could let him but I don’t think he’d be very good. I think Reed/Pagan would be better, considering how much ground is going to need covering in centerfield I don’t think Church has that kind of range.

Wanny2 March 10, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Sullivan plays CF too.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 10, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Check whatever defensive metrics you have– Endy may be the best defensive Mets OF EVER. (Off the top of my head, he’s up there with Endy.)

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 10, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Up there with CARLOS the Beltran, I meant.

/Dumb

Hazmet March 10, 2009 at 10:53 pm

I also believe F-Mart’s natural position was centerfield.

Chris02M March 10, 2009 at 7:43 pm

if they go with 11 pitchers as expected, the bench will have 6 guys

castro
cora
tatis
anderson
kielty
reed

thats my projection

Chris02M March 10, 2009 at 7:44 pm

reed has had a great camp. and if its only 5 man bench kielty and anderson are fighting for last spot

Midtown March 10, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Anderson bats lefty.

Not to be a pain, but you’ve mistaken which side players bat/pitch from on a number of occasions, and its something that isn’t too hard to check up on.

Anthony-n-VA March 10, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Ron and Kevin have been saying that Reed is a virtual lock to make the team, and I hope they are right.

nyleetch2 March 10, 2009 at 5:42 pm

seems like reed and marlon both make the roster (anderson has that guaranteed contract – i cant see a team that just cut sanchez to clear $1.5mill throwing away marlon anderson’s salary by cutting him – especially when hes been playing well this spring) which really leaves no spots left, despite impressive play these spring by Corey Sullivan, Bobby Keilty (at times anyway) and of late by Nick Evans…

Chris02M March 10, 2009 at 7:46 pm

they cud go with 6 man bench like manuel said he wants to

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Clem Kadiddlehopper March 10, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I copied this from the Baseball Library:

“Canadian reliever MacKenzie saw his only significant action with the expansion Mets, and he was the only pitcher on their 1962 staff to post a winning record (5-4). The Yale graduate once pointed out to manager Casey Stengel that he was the lowest-paid member of his graduating class; Stengel replied that MacKenzie had the highest ERA.”

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 10, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Ah the daily Mo Vaughn diet update! Thanks again sir!

Am out for the night, but just wanted to say hi and thanks for today’s Met History Lesson With Sir Rusty!

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:48 pm

had to shut off fatso – some caller claiming to be a mets fan was worried about our rotaion – so of course the blob with a diet coke man-crush jumped on it quiker than he could a meatball parm hero and ran with it – now if you were to say that jabba c.c wang were having bad spring training games he’d brush it off – with us – other than johan according to him we’d be in serious doo doo

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 10, 2009 at 6:16 pm

How about you are the ref, and it is a jump ball between Francesspool and Mo Vaughn, and the ball that gets jumped is a 5-pound pastrami sandwich….who wins?

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 6:41 pm

i think fatcessa would – then he’s use mo’s beard hair as dental floss lol

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 10, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Not sure who wins… but anyone with eyes loses.

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 10, 2009 at 10:11 pm

HAHAHA!!!

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:50 pm

mlbtr is reporting that sheets is rehabbing in tx – i wonder if we are in a dire need of a pitcher come july if we’d take a chance on him

Clem Kadiddlehopper March 10, 2009 at 5:53 pm

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 5:58 pm

cool clem – i really couldnt find much info on him

dominicanboy08 March 10, 2009 at 6:16 pm

K-ROD is pitching today for venezuela. he hasnt pitch yet, so he said he is pitching 2 innings today. I havent see him pitch yet this spring, so I will be watching.

ProudMetFan March 10, 2009 at 6:27 pm

I was wondering when hed pitch in the WBC well now I know thanks dominicanboy.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 6:42 pm

wasnt k-rod touched up fpor a couple of runs the other day?? – could there be more than 1 rodriguez on a all latin team lol

SantanaClause March 10, 2009 at 10:19 pm

the real question is with Omar as GM how is it that there is only one Rodriguez on the Mets roster??? JK JK

the clap March 10, 2009 at 6:29 pm

The OF injury dominoes over the past couple years has been one of the Mets major problems that has worked to stretch the entire roster to the brink. A good thing is that it gave Tatis and Murphy a shot to shine last year, but the fact remains the Mets have continuously been forced to either scrape the bottom of the barrel in the OF with AAA/AAAA talent (Ricky Ledee, Ben Johnson, David Newhan, Trot Nixon, etc) or be forced to stick career infielders out there like Easley, Evans, Tatis, Murphy. Of course the dominoes were always set in motion by committing to Moises Alou as the starting LF, so that’s no longer a worry. And hopefully ridding of Alou is also the cure to the Domino Theory of past.

Chris Alvino March 10, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I agree with the domino theory. Hopefully having Pagan (out), Keilty, Reed, Sullivan, etc. being able to come up gives us decent enough depth to make it through the season without having to force people in the OF.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 6:42 pm

BRING BACK BRETT BUTLER OR JOE ORSULAK !!!

atrain311 March 10, 2009 at 6:43 pm

I know they said six to eight weeks out for Pagan, but do yo think that translates to much longer due to rehabbing in extended spring training or the minors? Or is this 6 to 8 weeks including his rehab time? Just wondering if anyone knows.

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I think it’s 6 to 8 before playing competitive baseball again. So a rehab assignment would START in 6 to 8 weeks and then he would probably be ready for the bigs in 8 to 10 weeks.

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 6:52 pm

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 6:45 pm

guys this is why im happy we didnt go after milton bradley – aka carl everett jr
as per mlbtr
Milton Bradley’s comments to Gil Lebreton of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram are causing a mini-stir. He spoke about how the Rangers wouldn’t commit to him:

“My agent was saying that Jon Daniels was telling him, ‘There are days when he doesn’t want to play because of his health.’ Well, you can get a healthy guy to go out there and play 162 games, but he won’t do what I did in 120.”

As Lebreton said, the comment was “crudely self-serving” but “mostly right” given his production last year. Worse, though, Bradley seemed to admit to prioritizing his stats:

“If I’m being paid, and I’ve got the commitment to me that I give to them, you make more of an effort to be out there every day. When you’re on one-year deals constantly, you’ve got to put up as good numbers as you can. When you have days where you’re not feeling like you can contribute, you’re not going to go out there, because you’re not going to want your numbers to suck. So, if you’re in a situation like I am now, if they want me to go out there when I’m feeling a little banged up, I’ve got no problem doing that because they’ve made the commitment to me.”

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 6:50 pm

There are a lot of signs that point to our rotation being in serious trouble this year. Santana’s early injury, Maine looks awful, Pelfrey’s injury, Ollie looks bad, and the 5 spot is awful. In the end I think Santana will be great, Maine and Ollie will be mediocre, but Pelfrey is a major concern. The five spot looks scary. I think we can be good this year, but I don’t know that we can be as good as the 06 team.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 6:53 pm

its only spring training man – this is the time to work the kinks out – also maine said he felt good – he was just barely missing

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 6:56 pm

There have been a lot of reports that Maine has not been hitting his spots. Last time he threw he said he was not even close.

jaydh March 10, 2009 at 6:57 pm

and maine also said he felt really good about his outing today.

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 6:58 pm

LOL…does anyone else hear an echo?

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 7:00 pm

The fact of the matter is that most people here treat Maine, Ollie, and Pelfrey like they’re twos –which they’re not– and think everything is just rosy. I love all three of them, but there are reasons for concern that go beyond ST.

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 7:02 pm

i believe pelf is a 2 and maine if he returns to 07 form would be a 2/3

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Agreed that Pelfrey pitched like a two for the better part of a year last year, but he’s no 2. Maine in the first half of 07 was an ace. BUT…Randy Wolf had ace numbers second half of last year. You need to look at a large sample size. Look over the long haul. These aren’t twos. I hope for the best, but the best is 3.

Clem Kadiddlehopper March 10, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Blasphemy! :)

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 7:01 pm

lagranderusty10 March 10, 2009 at 7:00 pm

so keep yer fingers crossed man – ia int worried this is the time to work out your kinks and better your mechanics

Clem Kadiddlehopper March 10, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Rusty at times we forget that while this is entertainment to us (and to some people here an obsession) it’s a livelihood to these players. When they negotiate contracts their value is determined primarily by their stats (and to the people in love with metrics that is the only parameter used).

TRADE FOR MANNY!!!!!!!!!

MetsWin4901 March 10, 2009 at 6:48 pm

I know this is way off topic, but have you seen the way Aaron Heilman is pitching in Spring Training? He is pitching pretty good. He finally gave up his first run today. I guess the change of scenery helped.

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 7:47 am

Didn’t he pitch well LAST ST>?

jaydh March 10, 2009 at 6:57 pm

such drama queens here.

Gina March 10, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I would say at worst you have 3 4’s and more than likely Pelfrey, if there’s no affects from the increased injuries will be a 3, maybe a high 3, Maine will be a low end 3, but not get to a high innings total, and Perez will be a 4.

Metfreak March 10, 2009 at 7:45 pm

I hope Omar is watching the WBC tonight and maybe want to sign some of those guys from the Netherlands

NYMetsTalk March 10, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Well for anyone watching DR/NED game, Pedro is gonna come in relief of Jimenez .. he’ll probably pitch well again since the opposing team is such a joke.

dominicanboy08 March 10, 2009 at 7:47 pm

K-ROD IS PITCHING!!

NYMetsTalk March 10, 2009 at 7:50 pm

FifteenCF March 10, 2009 at 8:07 pm

1 Inning, 0 H, 1K so far from Pedro, vs. Dutch team again

Sylar March 10, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Perhaps I’m over exaggerating, but don’t the Netherlands have the single worst lineup in the history of professional baseball?

dominicanboy08 March 10, 2009 at 9:58 pm

REYES IS THE MAN!!!!!

GO D.R!!!!!

Metfreak March 10, 2009 at 9:59 pm

As Reyes goes so does the team that he plays for

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Wow, this DR team really knows how to play down to the level of it’s opponent. Perhaps they’re fans of Ollie Perez.

Metfreak March 10, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I think your right well atleast Reyes should be coming back to camp

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 10, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Ouch!

Or they may be fans of my damn New Jersey Nets…..

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:16 pm

DR maybe just replaced the Mets with greatest choke in the history of baseball!

Sylar March 10, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Just stunning..

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:21 pm

alex.422 if you’re out there, you said the DR was going to beat the US in the finals. Anytime you EVER reference the Mets as chokers again I’m going to personally remind you of this DR WBC choke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 10, 2009 at 10:24 pm

Grave buddy, I am looking VERY forward to you citing this to our friend alex….

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Grave, Can u believe it??? Nederlands over D.R.!!!!! Wheres Alex at?? lmao!

MetsFan4Decades March 10, 2009 at 10:22 pm

If you’re any kind of baseball fan, this DR vs Netherlands game was one to watch. Scoreless thru 11. You’ve got to give the Netherlands credit – they’ve never said die.
So I guess Reyes and Tatis will be on their way home.

And Pedro? 6 scoreless innings, 1 hit given up. He didn’t get much of a chance to audition….

atrain311 March 10, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Hey, alright, now our spring training will start to resemble a normal ST. The DR boys are coming back home.

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:30 pm

True. If the Netherlands can pull one more upset tomorrow night against Puerto Rico, all the relevant Mets except for KRod will be back in camp by the weekend.

MurphsDaMan28 March 10, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Say all you want about the WBC, but thats some damn good baseball.

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:40 pm

I would call it exciting, entertaining, but given that the new DR theme song is “Can I Kick It” due to how many errors they made, I’m not sure if I’d call it “good.”

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:40 pm

That was a dandy to watch I must say!

The Belt March 10, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Sorry to burst your bubble but PR is already in the second round. Tomorrow’s game decides seeding.

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:42 pm

You are correct, thank you for the factually accurate update. I was overcome with “Koninginnenacht” fever following the Netherlands stunning victory!

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Grave, u forgot we got guys on the USA team too!

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Who, JJ Putz and David Wright? I’m in metsblog land, the land where Wright is unclutch and JJ Putz is a washed up former closer that foolish Omar gave up too much for. You expect me to remember them here?

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Well my first reply got moderated so I’ll try this:

Based on what I often read in here, the guys the Mets have on the US team are not good enough to notice that they are missing, you know, due to their lack of clutchness and such.

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:56 pm

I would certainly think we would miss Dwright and Putz if they didn’t return! lol

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:57 pm

U think Pedro put on enough of a show that he’ll get a contract from a Major league team?

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 11:03 pm

I feel sad for Pedro that the DR team lost, because although he did look good, and although the team he faced twice is advancing in the tournament, the only 2 guys on that team with major league experience are Randall Simon and Eugene Kingsale. Based on what Jim Kaat said, the Netherlands team is considered to be of “AA” quality, so it’s sort of like Pedro pitching on a rehab a$$ignment for Binghamton. I hope someone signs him, but he’s going to have to lower his financial demands for it to happen, he’s looking for a Smoltz contract ($5.5 mil guaranteed, another $5.5 mil in incentives).

The Belt March 10, 2009 at 11:05 pm

LOL! Yeah Gravedigger, there’s a lot of that going around right now.

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 11:10 pm

He’s going to have a tough time getting that kind of dough even though as we’ve both said he looked good. I gotta believe the scouts are considering the competition he faced as u mentioned. Too bad really.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 10, 2009 at 11:15 pm

And that Wright guy.

dominicanboy08 March 10, 2009 at 10:38 pm

FUK!!!!!!!!!!!

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:39 pm

My condolences! lol Hey atleast we get Reyes and Tatis back!

dominicanboy08 March 10, 2009 at 10:39 pm

guys I need help!!!!

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I have no beef with you and I’m genuinely sorry that you are suffering because of this, but I hope you’ll understand when I lord it over alex.422 at every opportunity.

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:52 pm

I’ve noticed that Alex.422 is noticably absent from the blog! Where could he be? lol

GravediggerHebner March 10, 2009 at 10:56 pm

He’s pretty reasonable, so to be fair to him I should say I usually only notice him here during the day. Plus if I recall correctly when he left this afternoon he said something like “see you guys Thursday,” so if he’s not here tomorrow he’s got good cover.

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Lmao, almost like he called it!

Mets5rocks March 10, 2009 at 10:59 pm

He does have some good points to be sure, but pretty negative at times!

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 11, 2009 at 7:37 am

You are right Prismo, but I would bet a few bucks that the word “choke” just might be in the same sentence as “DR” in a post or two directed at our friend alex this week….

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:44 am

alex although a bit annoying with his negativity sometimes is still a good guy – but he will be reamed lol

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 7:55 am

Would it be fair to the order of the world not to at least uh mention results?

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 8:00 am

sorry trs netherlands defeated the dominican republic team 2-0 in 11 innings = so that means jose and fernando are coming back – and possibly pedro and moises lol

GravediggerHebner March 11, 2009 at 9:32 am

Prismo, if you’ll notice I said that any time alex mentions the Mets and choking I’m going to mention the DR and choking. If you think that’s “Phillie fan esque” I would politely suggest you look up the phrase “subtle difference.” And thanks for the rain!

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:25 am

ok my friends its time for the early a.m edition of “this day in mets infamy with rusty” so lets get goin
only birthday greetings today

first off is the first player ever to admit to pitching while high on lsd – and he threw a no – hitter at that – the late great Dock Ellis (1945)
Steve Reed – he was later traded with jason bay and jason middlebrook to the padres for bobby jones
(1966)

and at this exact time on this date in 2002 Mo vaughn was grazing at the spring training breakfast buffest !!!

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 11, 2009 at 7:36 am

Good morning sir!!

Ah, the Mo Vaughn meal update! And you know, he never used the plates provided by the team for those buffets—Mo always brought his own shovel and wheelbarrow….

And it was sad that Dock went….creator of one of the craziest events in baseball history, to be sure.

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:43 am

totally agree kong – btw do u think mo has a snuggie?? i think it would be a 12 xxl and yes dock ellis was one of a kind – him and jeez his name escapes me – anthony perkins played him – u know the guy who ran around the bases backwards after his 100th homer and then released cuz casey couldnt stand him lol

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:45 am

roger hornsby?

MetsFan4Decades March 11, 2009 at 7:55 am

Morning guys.
That would be Jimmy Piersall.

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:59 am

thankyou m’lady
btw i got tickets for my b-day – april 29th vs the fish – in the regular ceasers club sect 326 i believe

MetsFan4Decades March 11, 2009 at 8:20 am

Well, I’m jealous. I normally don’t get to go to games due to various circumstances and distance but I’m determined to get to one at Citi Field this year. Got the email to pre purchase tickets the other day. Can’t make up my mind. Think I want to wait for later in the summer and the offer was only through end of May….

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:28 am

also wondering should we give pedro’s appearence last night any creedence whatsoever?? i mean he looked good but it was against a team that would probably get their butts kicked against the long island ducks or the newark bears – hell i’d say its safe to a$$ume the mets old timers team from ‘79 could rough em up
i love pedro — im just afraid if we sign him it will blow up in our faces

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 7:56 am

Guys until Matt gives us a new post, lets all reply to the last post on the thread from sabermetrician. That way it will at least be at the bottom and we don’t have to go searching for it.

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 7:57 am

lol trs86

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 8:02 am

I can’t find half the post. Does not matter now as we have a new post :)

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 8:01 am

sorry trs netherlands defeated the dominican republic team 2-0 in 11 innings = so that means jose and fernando are coming back – and possibly pedro and moises lol

jaydh March 10, 2009 at 7:08 pm

i would say, at worst, you have 3 good #3s. Although i believe any one of them have #2 or better potential, while being a solid #4 as their bottom.

sabermetrician March 10, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Okay, I can agree with that. And, don’t get me wrong, we have a good solid team. Johan is the best in the business. The next 3 are solid 3’s but Ollie can pitch like a ‘6′ all too often. The five spot could be a mess. And I was one who really supported Redding and Garcia. But at this point it looks like Livan might be the most ready.

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 7:57 am

Anyone know who is scheduled to pitch today? I want to see what Livan and Freddy have again.

lagranderusty10 March 11, 2009 at 8:01 am

off day today
johan makes his debut tomorrow

therealsince86 March 11, 2009 at 8:02 am
