Matthew Cerrone

Interview: Ike Davis, Reese, Holt and Dylan Owen
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 11, 2009 2:30 pm

In St. Lucie, I spent time talking with the team’s top prospects, who set up inside Tradition Field to sign autographs and talk with fans.

To watch the three-minute video of me talking with Dylan Owen, Reese Havens, Ike Davis and Brad Holt, who had more faith in my ability to hit 80 mph on the radar gun than Owen, click play below:

Here’s a written transcript of my exchange with Holt:

  • Matthew Cerrone: Can you give me a scouting report of yourself?
  • Brad Holt: I throw a lot of fastballs.  I’m able to locate fastballs in and out.  And now the breaking ball is coming along pretty well, I’m getting to where I can locate it.  Since I’ve been here we’ve been working on the change-up a lot, and it’s getting a lot more consistent too and I’m able to locate it down in the zone.  But, mainly I just work off the fastball and everything else is coming along.

…it should be noted, off camera, holt’s teammates were yelling, ‘fastball, fastball,’ during his entire answer, which he was trying not to laugh at

That was friggin awesome! You should do more of these prospect interviews.

It’s wierd because we talk and write about them all the time and you create this image and voice of these guys in your mind, and then you finally see them talk and your like wow I was way off.

I hope Ike Davis steps up this year. Despite being drafted first, he’s probably fallen to fourth best among last years Mets draft class.

    Hey Matt, great video.

Is it true that the Mets “sing along” this year is the theme song from The King of Queens?

    Hey Matt…no offense…haha…

But that is a pretty pathetic speed pitch performance for a grown man….

61 would be good for a 12 yr old.

    • I agree, but, as Dylan Owen said, it reads low, and probably means I hit 80 – or, he was just being nice.

        Haha…fair enough…

Matt you have great form lol did you play when you were younger or something lol
……………………. pitching change brought to you by Metsblog hear the latest news and opinions……….pitching for the Mets Matthew Cerrone……….Matt posted a great 2.34 ERA in 67 IP……and allowed 20 BB and Struck out 78 batters….. Matt has shown great command in the late inings so hopefully we can see him pull it off in the month of Sept for the Mets…….. haha

    • We Were Throwbacks says:

Moze…trust me, I’ve been down to PSL and I’ve thrown at that exact machine before and it’s definitely low. I threw 83-85 in high school and I barely hit 65 on that gun. Most of those ballpark guns are typically low. It actually looked like Matt had pretty good pitching form.

oh no, not the radar gun! i tried one several years ago at a spring training game in Lakeland…my shoulder literally hurt for 2 years…bad ideas for old guys.

    • Gasface77 says:

Same thing happened to me. Did one of these at a street fair. I was at the orthopedic a month later with pain in my shoulder. I ended up having to rehab it for 6 months….kept me out of the gym and kept me from sleeping for a while….and I’m only 31 and in decent shape…haha.

Stay away from these things at all costs!

    (1966)

and at this exact time on this date in 2002 Mo vaughn was grazing at the spring training lunch buffet !!!

    • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:
