Buzz: Giants, Astros and Twins and Pudge

by Matthew Cerrone on March 15th, 2009 at 9:12 am

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Twins and Giants are now showing interest in free-agent C Pudge Rodriguez.

However, La Velle E. Neal III, of the Star Tribune, has not heard that the Twins are interested.

In a post to CBS Sports, Danny Knobler was told Rodriguez could soon sign a new contract.

Lastly, the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida reports the Marlins continue to be concerned with Rodriguez’s demand for playing time.

Rodriguez is hitting .600 with five extra base hits and a .625 OBP in 15 at bats during the World Baseball Classic.

there continues to be no evidence that pudge is an option for the Mets, who a) do not seem interested in spending additional money at this time, b) who are committed to Brian Schneider as their starting catcher, and b) who have Ramon Castro on the roster

Note: The Starting Pitchers

by Matthew Cerrone on March 15th, 2009 at 8:54 am

Yesterday, Mike Pelfrey returned from a strained left leg muscle, pitched four scoreless innings against the Nationals, he let up two hits and two walks and struck out one batter with 62 pitches.

Livan Hernandez pitched two scoreless innings as well, and will next pitch on Wednesday.

Following yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel suggested Niese could potentially win the fifth starter’s job, with Hernandez capable of adjusting to a long-relief role.

Johan Santana will start in a minor-league game in Port St. Lucie on Tuesday – the same say Jon Niese will pitch against the Braves in Orlando.

John Maine will start today against the Marlins.
