Minors: Mets sign Junior Spivey, Franco a Coach

March 16, 2009 at 15:32 pm · 83 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have signed infielder Junior Spivey to a minor league contract.

wow… to me, the real news is that Junior Spivey still plays baseball

Spivey last played in the major leagues for the Nationals in 2005, when he hit just .221 in 28 games.

Also, the Mets announced today that Julio Franco – yes, that Julio Franco – will manage the Low-A Gulf Coast League Mets, while Mike DeFelice – yes, that Mike DeFelicie – will manage the Kingsport Mets.

Junior Spivey huh?

metsfan121 March 16, 2009 at 3:30 pm

this is funny; really funny
last i heard of junior spivey was with the d’backs around 6 years ago.
and i was really hoping that you would type julio franco signed a contract too, just because i think it would be hysterical to have a 50 year old on the team.

jaydh March 16, 2009 at 3:30 pm

He is probably just minor league filler… you know, because we need complete minor league teams as well.

The Reporter formerly known as La Velle E. Neal III March 16, 2009 at 3:36 pm

At 33, there is nothing “junion” about him.

The Reporter formerly known as La Velle E. Neal III March 16, 2009 at 3:36 pm

*junior (i apologize for the misspelling.)

alex242 March 16, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Bruce Boisclair09 March 16, 2009 at 3:47 pm

We signed Jesus?

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Can Jesus hit the curveball?

Ceetar March 16, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Pretty sure he’d be a closer.

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Heck if he could turn water into wine, maybe he could turn Castillo into a second baseman that can hit.

Bruce Boisclair09 March 16, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Talk about the miracle Mets…

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:10 pm

are we talking about Jesus Colome?

paulaecinc March 16, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Jesus is a 5 tool player.

paulaecinc March 16, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Actually, I take that back, he really a 4 tool player….he has trouble rounding third with those sandles on…lol

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:23 pm

May not be long until Jesus Alou though

The Reporter formerly known as La Velle E. Neal III March 16, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Jesus can hit a curveball…so can Jobu!

Dirtysanchez March 16, 2009 at 4:24 pm

euchreking March 16, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Yes indeed, this made me laugh!

Boscov March 16, 2009 at 3:47 pm

20 years from now:

After 22 straight disappointments, the Mets have hired Matt Cerrone….yes, THAT Matt Cerrone….as new manager.

Keep with it Matt, just stay close!

BIGpelfcyyoung March 16, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Great move!! I mean he was an all-star in ‘02

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 3:53 pm

This is great. We get an update on Junior friggin Spivey but nothing on Cole Hamels’ injury on the NL East report??

Well done and keep up the good work,

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Has someone kidnapped you and forced u to read this site only?

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Dear post police,

Has someone kidnapped you and forced you to read my post? Oh ok.

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 3:59 pm

If u don’t want people to read it, then why post it????

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 4:01 pm

how about you worry about the cheeky little nickname you’ve got going there. I didnt come on to jaw back and forth with a message board tough guy. Let it go and keep working the room. You’re doing great.

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:03 pm

fair enough…whatever.

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:04 pm
kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:13 pm

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 March 16, 2009 at 4:30 pm

LOL!

QnsNative1718 March 16, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Man, Captain has got a mouth on him. No need for all that. We all root for the same team.

Bruce Boisclair09 March 16, 2009 at 3:58 pm

…or stoilen you happy pills?

Boscov March 16, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Hey Captain what do you think, Metsblog has up to the minute updates on Cole Hamels’ injury? You already heard he was injured – THATS IT! He’s flying back to Philly to see a doctor. There’s nothing new to report. What on earth are you expecting here?

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 4:38 pm

I’m expecting not to get cyber jumped by fellow Mets fans. How about that?? Perhaps you need to step away from the keyboard and take a deep breath.

QnsNative1718 March 16, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Bro, seriously. WTF? lol

NYMETSFAN718 March 16, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Captian,

Gimme your wallet!!

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:49 pm

LOL..

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Dude, again my bad if I upset u earlier. Just saying, espn or any other site is just a click away.

QnsNative1718 March 16, 2009 at 4:55 pm

If the dude got upset over what you said, he needs to grow a pair.

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 7:11 pm

QnsNative, I wasnt the one is getting upset. I’m actually stunned that anyone got upset over what I wrote. Like I said, I didnt come on trying to rail on anyone.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 16, 2009 at 4:58 pm

>>This is great. We get an update on Junior friggin Spivey but nothing on Cole Hamels’ injury on the NL East report??

Well done and keep up the good work,<<

If you carry yourself like an a-hole, you’ll get a lot of crap tossed your way.

Boscov March 16, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Did you really just type out “cyber-jumped?”
It was only a retaliatory cyber jumping, Captain. You cyber jumped Cerrone with this doozie:
“This is great. We get an update on Junior friggin Spivey but nothing on Cole Hamels’ injury on the NL East report??

Well done and keep up the good work,”

An unecessary, sarcastic crack at the website for not reporting the news that hasn’t even developed yet. You gotta be able to take ‘em if you’re gonna insist on giving em. Thus, your cyber jumping only provoked the herd, and please don’t make up such dumb-a$s phrases again.

CaptainFMSD March 16, 2009 at 7:14 pm

You can’t be serious. The herd?? You want to talk about comments and throw out a statement saying that I provoked “a herd” ??

You really need to get a grip and get over yourself. Its a message board. My point was I wasn’t antagonizing anyone in order for you to act as the board spokesman.

1331 March 16, 2009 at 3:58 pm

when i hear junior spivey, i think of essix snead

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Hamels is supposed to flying into Philly tonight and get examined tomorrow morning.

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:14 pm

You think Franco used riods?

JNGordon March 16, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Hemorrhoids?

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Doubt it. otherwise he wouldn’t have
disapeared for a decade.
Health freak.
But he does have his fellow MLB
Union Members and Officials to
Thank for the question.

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:39 pm

U could argue that he went away for 10 years cause he wasn’t using the juice, and then started and re-emerged. That’s obviously part of the issue with the whole steroids thing. There is a cloud over anyone. I will say he was in pretty ridiculous shape for a 50 year old.

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:46 pm

U could argue anything but two words:
Jack LaLanne!

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Well we know he was on the Juice.

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Exactly! Well atleast someone got it!

udontmesswiththejohan March 16, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Those things suck by the way. U need like a whole basket of fruit for one glass.

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:43 pm

the dude was very muscular

craigswandive March 16, 2009 at 4:21 pm

If these guys can work rookie ball, why didn’t Willie?

Tidewater March 16, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Yankee pride, of course. If you have ever been in the same room as the nose-picking Joe Torre, you are qualified to manage at the major league level. So why stoop?

TheChosen1 March 16, 2009 at 4:22 pm

The Mets announced today about Franco and DeFelice??

Wow, I posted that on this site more than a month ago.

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Wait!!, I’m confused!! Help!!
What year is this again??

TheChosen1 March 16, 2009 at 4:32 pm

I don’t mind the year. As long as they’re managers and not players.

DaveCfromNJ March 16, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I heard when Julio’s starting line up is announced, they’re going to play, “PEOPLE GET READY”.

GravediggerHebner March 16, 2009 at 4:32 pm

‘People Get Ready’ used to be the song. Now it’s ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ by Bauhaus.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 16, 2009 at 4:59 pm

:)

killerkill March 16, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Hey question here. I purchased some opening day tickets but haven’t recieved them yet. Just wondering if any of u guys have recieved them yet? Thanx

kistics March 16, 2009 at 4:45 pm

I got eTix… should’ve gotten the regular tickets though.. would be a nice memorabilia..

killerkill March 16, 2009 at 5:49 pm

thanx guys

DaveCfromNJ March 16, 2009 at 4:44 pm

no i think they’re mailing them in april or something

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Seriously though, I guess Franco
couldn’t get work anymore in the Mexican
League so, he must have given Omar
a call. Needed a paycheck and an old
Dominican can always count on Don O.

Fiya Minaya March 16, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Wow, this is scrapping the bottom even by Minaya standards. And why are Julio Franco and Difelice going straight to managing? Shouldn’t they be coaching first to see how they perform???

Stan A March 16, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Great, another aged, unaccomplished player in the system, and another former Nat to boot. Work a little harder on the scouting and get some REAL prospects for the farm system. (Maybe some of these surprising WBC players we’ve been seeing?)

And to open an old wound, were we really looking forward to open up a new stadium in the largest sports media center with Livan H as our #5 starter, or perhaps #4 or #3 if Maine, Pelf, and/or Santana’s injuries prove more serious than they hoped?

vic79 March 16, 2009 at 5:14 pm

we are on a roll signing AAA players

Just wondering if they bring in guys like this because they need to rebuild the minors system?

I mean Martinez,Spivey,etc

What is the projected AAA roster?.I guess it depends on if guys accept minor league deals once they are gondie from Spring Camp

DaveCfromNJ March 16, 2009 at 5:25 pm

to the guy who said shoiuldnt they be coaching first? they’re managing rookie ball…isn’t one step below that like pony league haha

lagranderusty10 March 16, 2009 at 5:54 pm

hello all my favorite mets bretheren its time for yet another edition on “this day in mets infamy with rusty ” so lets make no haste

New York Mets released infielder Danny “im not karim damnnit!!”Garcia on March 16, 2005

Hazmet March 16, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Ooohh my Spivey senses are tingling. Must mean I’m about to get cyber jumped.

God can we start this season already….

jack123 March 16, 2009 at 8:51 pm

Does anyone know the latest on Sheets?

Pitching continues to be a worry, but every now and again I look at the lineup and, well, wow:

Reyes
Castillo
Murphy
Beltran
Delgado
Wright
Church
Schneider

And you’ve got Evans and Tatis if Church hits a slump.

Castillo and Schneider are the only week links. That and the first six innings of pitching. ;-)

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Please, No Ben Sheets! Ever!
As for Scheider, no biggie.
There are only about 10 teams in all the
MLB w/better Catching situations and
none of them are available.

The Slider March 16, 2009 at 9:06 pm

We need Junior Spivey to be our first base coach while Razor Shines is the third base coach.

Only then will we overcome the collapses of the past two years and win the Division.

fongulalou March 16, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Huh??

The Slider March 17, 2009 at 9:55 am

Just being silly. You got to admit, they are two great baseball names.

jack123 March 16, 2009 at 9:16 pm

I was also thinking – where are our farm team pitchers? Who is the Murphy or Evans (or Kielty or Flores) on the mound?

cver March 16, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Not to, at this point, single any one acquisition or decision out, but I have to say this. The Mets are a team that each of the last 2 years missed the playoffs by a game or two – a game or two! Let’s face it – DON’T GIVE OMAR, BERNAZARD and their merry men too much credit!!!! They have been CAVALIER in MANY of their decisions. Though I see no smoking guns, I have seen circumstancial evidence that points to some of these signings being possibly based more on personal relationships/friendships than on being the absolute friggin’ best candidates on the whole planet for these positions. If Omar is gonna go to the middle east, Africa or whereever to spread the word – if we’re gonna have a WBC – we SHOULD have the best in the WORLD! They are available and in this economy, they are at bargain rates. Even to bring in for the limited number of minor league tryouts or for the limited number of minor league managerial positions, which are VERY IMPORTANT, I just wonder (and I’m not talking about Julio Franco) if there has been the exhaustive search that is imperative. And these can be the differences that win or lose those one or two games.

jack123 March 16, 2009 at 10:22 pm

I don’t think we need conspiracy theories here. We lost our closer and for the last month of the season we would have been better off nailing the bullpen door shut and having our opener finish the game underarm. Set aside the 36 blown saves – we lost over 20 games where we scored five runs or more That’s where you’ll find the one game that kept us out of October – in a pitching staff held together with duct tape and hope. I’ll pass on the tin foil hat, thanks anyway.

Stan A March 17, 2009 at 9:13 am

Astros have signed Pudge for 1.5 mil down, and another potential 1.5 mil in performance related bonuses. Pudge is hitting up a storm in the WBC for PR. Was this really out of the Mets budget?
