Buzz: Mets made an offer to Pedro
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 19, 2009 3:43 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Mets made free-agent RHP Pedro Martinez an offer that’s well below his $5 million minimum asking price.

“I can assure you, we are not paying him $5 million,” a Mets person told Heyman.

Heyman believes the Mets offered Martinez $1-2 million, plus incentives.

Last week, Heyman wrote that Martinez is seeking a guaranteed, one-year deal, worth between $5 million and $8 million.

Also in his report, Heyman lists 33 young players who might be worth watching, including Mets OF Daniel Murphy and RHP Bobby Parnell.

well what do you know…didnt see this coming(sarcasm)

  2. Can people please grow up so Matt doesn’t have to turn comments off when he posts something regarding Julie Alexandria?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Thank you. I thought all would get the hint after the first time that happened.

      • kistics says:

        what happend?

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Every time there is a post concerning Julie A., it’s almost immediately closed to further posting b/c some are making inappropriate comments.
There is an interview posted a little while ago with Julie and Matt. Comments are closed.

          • kistics says:

Oh.. I wonder what kind of comments have been made.. hmm….

          • MetsFan4Decades says:

I had read some before the comments were closed off but judging by what I was reading, you could tell some were already pulled b/c the ones I was reading didn’t make any sense – like someone responded to a post that was no longer there.

          • lagranderusty10 says:

i cant be blamed this time 4decades i was at work lol but i shall tone that down regardless – i promise

  3. therealsince86 says:

Made or make? How long ago did the MAKE this offer?

  4. MetsFan4Decades says:

Well, I’m sure surprised. Al I kept hearing was no how, now way were the Mets making him an offer.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

well omar was at least going to kick the tires on pedro and see if we can get him on a low money low risk kind of contract. With the way things are going with garcia and how he will be either cut or leave voluntarily…we need the depth. 1-2 on pedro if he accepts is ok imo

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, not necessarily a bad thing – especially if cheap. I’m kind of on the fence with Pedro. You know he’s not going to the minors so where does that leave the rest of them?
Garcia probably won’t be staying. Reed looks like he’ll be on the DL come opening day, Niese will go back to the minors and Livan? If Pedro will be the 5th starter, so be it. Doesn’t hurt to have depth but sure does change things…

        • kistics says:

I think IF (big if) Pedro signs, it’ll be Redding, Livan and Pedro for a 5th starter and a long man.

However, maybe the Mets see something in Redding or Maine that has triggered them to go get more depth even with Niese waiting in the minors

          • Dirtysanchez says:

or maybe they dont think niese is ready to be depended on if theres an emergency. Im not blasting niese but i just dont think he is ready. A combo of pedro/livan/redding is fine imo just as long as we dont drop 5mil on pedro.

          • kistics says:

I agree, but I’m just worried that there might be something wrong with Maine

  5. kistics says:

I wouldn’t mind $1 mil plus incentives. Pedro and be the 5th starter and Livan can be the long man and 5th starter when Pedro is injured.

But then I thought it takes like 80 pitches for Livan to warm up… so, this offer doesn’t really make sense unless they see something in John Maine’s recovery…

  6. Dirtysanchez says:

Only thing is it will get a bit complicated with Redding comes back as in if pedro signed and we had livan for long relief. Redding comes back and i think livan has to go to waivers or be let go.

  7. Mets5rocks says:

Wow, I’m suprised they even made himan offer???

  8. DavidWrightIsClutch says:

Nope, not liking this. No money guaranteed. He has to earn it like the other #5’s. this guy should be playing for free for us after he fleeced us the last few years on that contract.

  9. mets9268 says:

I have heard that they would use Livan as long relief, but if they don’t have that in their plans signing Pedro can mean one of two things. They are worried about Maine and feel they might need Pedro until Maine gets his stuff together, or they would like to sign Pedro and use Livan in a trade to a team that needs pitching which is most of the teams out there.

  10. DavidWrightIsClutch says:

I really just hope that this is not a sign something is up with Maine. We need hime to perform.

    • 0h the ag0ny says:

the guy is healthy throwing 95 mph

he just needs to shake the rust off dude… omg he had a bone spur removed not shoulder or elbow surgery

      • DavidWrightIsClutch says:

Ok Doc. Glad you are well versed with the intricacies of his surgery and are on top of it. Bone spurs do vary in severity, and with surgery comes mental baggage.

I was referring to his mental state more than the physical health.

  11. paulaecinc says:

Why is everyone mentioning MAine? Is it because of his poor performance in spring or is there news out? Please advise

A scout once told me that you cant judge a player by his performance in March or Sept.

  12. Hey does anyone know of any injury with Beltran he’s on my fantasy team and i just checked it and it has a little red cross next to it and when it is hovered over it says out till late march which if its true may mean both Jeremy Reed and Corey Sullivan make the team.

    • 0h the ag0ny says:

      that is incredibly wrong.

    • Yeah…I heard he was out until Late March with WBCitis…fortunately he was cured the other night/

    • I just re-read it and it was very short “Rest – Out until at least late March” So it may just be rest from the WBC which may be only until Sunday the 22nd which is the next home game and is technically “late” march.

      • okay false alarm it was refering to:
“News: Outfielder Carlos Beltran and first baseman Carlos Delgado resumed workouts with the Mets following Puerto Rico’s elimination from the World Baseball Classic. “We got to go home for the first round, and we played really well there,” Delgado said. “It was nice to play at that intensity in March. We came up a little bit short in the end, but it was a great experience.” Manager Jerry Manuel said he likely will give Beltran and Delgado a week of rest from games. “It was good for me because spring training to this point, you aren’t playing a full game, nine innings, but we’ve been doing that since two weeks ago,” Beltran said.”

  13. NYMetsTalk says:

With the way Livan pitched yesterday I dont think they sign him unless its at their price, which will be very low and Pedro wont want that

  14. Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura says:

I dont see how pedro comes back if he is really looking at 5-8 mil.He is all about how teams “respect” him and i think he will feel disrespected if anyone offers him less.

    • JNGordon says:

He was shown plenty of RESPECT for his 1 good year and three mediocre to poor years. Remember the late Lyman Bostock who tried to give Gene Autry money back after his first year in California because he felt he didn’t play up to his large contract? Now THAT was respect!

  15. Justin4383 says:

Great move by omar picking up Pudge. He is almost like nostrasdamas knowing he might need a ctacher incase of injuries to brian schneider.

    What? they didnt? Really? Wow.

My sarcasm is to illustrate that we shoulda woulda coulda with pudge. lets not do the same with Pedro. Livan sux

    • Wanny2 says:

I suppose they should sign a multi-million dollar backup at each position. Hey, you never know…

    • NYMetsTalk says:

Pedro might be worth it just because we have good backup at #5: Jon Niese, thats in case Pedro either sucks or goes on the DL etc..

(And perhaps more backup would be Livan Hernandez if he goes to AAA..)

  16. Wanny2 says:

Heyman has less credibility than Bernie Madoff. The quote from the Mets source assures him that the Mets are not paying X but it doesn’t state or even imply that they have offered him Y.

  17. Wanny2 says:

Heyman has less credibility than Bernie Madoff. The quote from the Mets source a$$ures him that the Mets are not paying X but it doesn’t state or even imply that they have offered him Y.

And how come Matt can type the word “a$$ure” but we can not?

  18. jaydh says:

Hopefully no one else will make a better offer and hopefully pedro will accept it. If and when healthy, I believe he is better than Livan. Plus as some said above, Livan can be long man.

  19. jeenyus245 says:

How about the two Japanese starters in the WBC not named Dice-K. How about them?

    • NYMetsTalk says:

Yu Darvish? LOL I wish, hes going to be better than Dice K..

As for anyone else on Japan: they are all most likely under contract with a Japanese team. And it will cost $$$ just to talk to them.

    • kistics says:

From what I’ve heard, Darvish has good stuff and doesn’t get rattled by anything. But he does not want to come the the majors. He said that he wants improve Japanese Baseball.

      • NYMetsTalk says:

Darvish is the best Japanese pitcher over there. ESPN wrote an article some time ago about how it will most likely cost $75 million JUST TO NEGOTIATE with him… and yeah he doesn’t wanna leave Japan, yet…. I think that will change eventually..

  20. jeenyus245 says:

How about the Cuban Vera, the one who pitched against Mexico, his stuff was NASTY.

    • NYMetsTalk says:

if MLB teams could get hands on a cuban player, teams would be stacked with them…..

      • sabermetrician says:

Has anyone heard what happened to those two Cuban players who defected? Forget their names, but one was a pitcher, one was an infielder.

        • 16dwight16 says:

Their names are Yadel Marti and Yasser Gomez. Marti is the pitcher. They’re supposed to be MLB ready. They must have visa issues because I haven’t heard a thing about them in a couple of months.

  21. sabermetrician says:

Man, this offseason has been rough. I love the K-Rod and Putz moves, but the rest haven’t really been panning out and now we’ve got some of our players from last year in rough shape. I still like us, but this is part of Mets’ bad luck when we have so many little things happening.

    • jaydh says:

Mets were 5th in the NL last year with a 3.98 era from the starters. That said, I have no problem with the same production.

      • oleosmirf says:

well i’d love to be at least 5th in the NL again but i expect Maine and Ollie to have less productive seasons…

  22. afmoshers says:

Why all the worry about the money for Pedro? This is Baseball.. no salary cap. New Stadium, higher ticket prices. They need to make sure we have the best product out there. I’m not saying go Yankee crazy, but will and extra 2 or 3 Mil really make a diff to ownership? Enough already, roll the dice and get Pedro.

    • oleosmirf says:

i’ve been saying this all offseason. if Madoff was a non-issue like they claim then why be so frugal???

even with the economy the way it is, the Mets revenues are going to skyrocket…

is paying an extra 1-2 mil for a player you want that big of a deal????

      • scoopcoopdoop says:

It is not a question of having the $$ to pay for another player at a couple MM.

The Wilpons have made it clear they don’t want to go over the lux tax and they want the same salary level as last yr. It is their money and it is their business and they chose to spend 145MM or so.

Would I like to see them spend alot more? sure.

But I’m glad they at least spend what they do now. Being a pirate fan would suck.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Actually, there is a salary cap of sorts, it’s called the “Competitive Balance Tax” more popularly known as the luxury tax, and the owners have repeatedly stated they don’t wish to approach it, let alone exceed it.

Yes, they have a new stadium, and many of the ticket prices are higher. They also have 11,000 fewer seats, and many of the seats they do have remain unsold. Perhaps you’ve heard, seen or read the multiple daily advertisements for season ticket plans.

Will the extra 2-3 mil make a difference to ownership? I can’t say, but I do know even if I were a millionaire I would not be inclined to “roll the dice” with 3 million dollars in this uncertain economy, especially knowing that I already have on of the top 3 payrolls in the sport and a farm system that is receiving higher ratings than it has in years.

guys – got this from mlbtr

According to Newsday’s Jim Baumbach a friend of Pedro Martinez’s says the righty still hopes to sign a deal with the Mets, though the Dodgers also appeal to him. This afternoon Jon Heyman reported that the Mets have offered Pedro a deal worth $1-2MM, so it appears Pedro can return if he’s willing to lower his asking price.
    thoughts opinions?

Baumbach adds that Pedro isn’t selling selling the house he owns on the New York-Connecticut border in case he can work out a return to the Mets. Last Tuesday, his return seemed unlikely, but a lot changes in a week.

    • Hazmet says:

This just in from Jim Baumbach, Pedro’s friend Yury. ;)

Just kidding. I always love the “friend” , un-named source or cousin to be named later.

      • lagranderusty10 says:

too bad it wasn’t pedro’s mini me (r,i,p) could you imagine him on a chair next to a payphone calling in his tip lol

  26. scoopcoopdoop says:

When I read some of these comments I have to ask myself if some of your are fans and understand the game or is your fandom blinding you to the facts.

Case in point-LH has stated that he will not pitch from the BP. He will ask for his release and the Mets will grant it b/c they won’t want a guy around that does not want to be around. Is that so hard to understand?

Secondly, when people say Pedro is better than LH what information leds you to that conclusion? 5 years ago Pedro was better. And even today in one game he might be better.

But not over a 6 month season. Not when the Mets need a guy that can go out and pitch 6 inn every 5 days.

Will LH give up lots of hits and maybe quite a few runs? Sure.

I’m not arguing he is some great savoir. But if he does what he has done for the last 10 yrs, he can be counted on to go out there every 5 days and pitch. Pedro can not.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

scoop i think the point is moot – he imho wone the 5th starters job by far

  27. lagranderusty10 says:

evening guys it time for “this day in mets infamy with rusty” so lets get started shall we

  28. vic79 says:

honestly Pedro needs to move on . Go to the Dodgers and join Manny. Happy Days

Livan is not awesome but he does’nt have to be and if he stinks then they have Redding when he is healthy, Niese at AAA and if they have to Figueroa, Knight, Garcia( he really should take a minor league deal), Robertson

  29. Hazmet says:

In honor of Japan’s WBC tilt tonight for your viewing a quirky article on our far east baseball fans. The curse of the Col.

TOKYO — He was covered in mud when pulled from the river, and had lost both legs and hands, not to mention his gla-$-$es. But Colonel Sanders still had his trademark smile, 24 years later.

A statue of the KFC ma-s-cot has been found in a river in Osaka, a city official said today, nearly a quarter century after being tossed in by crazed baseball fans who felt the image of restaurant founder Harland Sanders resembled a key team member.

“He was apparently found standing upright, which is fitting, because although he was a nice man he could also be very strict and demanding,” said Sumeo Yokakawa, a spokeswoman at the chain’s Tokyo headquarters. She said the statue was taken from a nearby restaurant and to-s-sed in the river as part of a celebration by baseball fans in 1985, the year Osaka’s baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers, won the national championship.

Fans thought the Colonel bore a resemblance to Randy B-a-$-$, a bearded power hitter and first baseman from the U.S. who played for the team at the time.

Fans often jump into the murky river to celebrate the team’s successes, but there has been little to celebrate in recent years. Many fans feel the team has been plagued by the “curse of Colonel Sanders” since his effigy was submerged. It has failed to win a national championship since, although it did win its division in 2003

    • lagranderusty10 says:

yeah i read that last week on the mets police

      • Hazmet says:

My wife found this and showed it to me and I found it amusing. If we threw Mr. Met in to Flusing Bay for good luck he’d probably just float from his cranium. I really need the season to start. I’m all out.

  30. metsropolitan says:

CAN PEDRO MARTINEZ BE THE METS STARTING CATCHER?!!!

he knows the pitching staff pretty well.
he could probably gun guys out at 2nd.
he’d look hecka funny with the mask & vest.
and he probably will hit about as good as Schneider.

    make this happen Omar!!!

  31. mark4212 says:

According to Newsday, Pedro Martinez is still hoping to return to the Mets despite every indication that they have no interest.
The Dodgers appear to be the best fit, but Martinez’s “heart is in New York,” according to a close friend. Pedro’s agent, Fern Cuza, is hopeful that a deal will be finalized with some team in the next two weeks.

  32. sabermetrician says:

    Good, Bad, Ugly

    Good:
-Delgado looked sharp in the WBC.
-Beltran, Wright, and Reyes are amazing.
    -Castillo is looking serviceable.
    -Santana is amazing.
    -Murphy and Tatis look decent.
    -K-Rod looks very sharp.
    -Putz is very solid.

    Bad:
-Ollie looks like Ollie, which isn’t bad in and of itself, but it CAN be bad, bordering on ugly.
-Jerry Manuel manages like an old man.
-WBC has been hard on Wright…maybe not ready for full games right from the get go.
    -Maine looks a little fuzzy.

    Ugly:
-Schneider injury. No Pudge and then he goes down.
    -Robinson Cancel.
-Fifth starter spot. When Livan Hernandez is the best option things are dicey.

Rusty, how in the world did the Mets end up making an offer to Pedro?

        • therealsince86 says:

I know you ask Rusty, but in my opinion it was out of respect, lack of interest from other teams, Garcia being done, and a lower price demand.

          • Mets5rocks says:

Hey TRS, I DIDN’T REALIZE you were still on. I wonder if Pedro really has lowered his price? I would sign him up to 2 million guaranteed with incentives, but beyond that I’m not sure it’s worth the risk. What do you think?

          • therealsince86 says:

I responded to this below in a new post so we would have more room. Bad thing about this comment style.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I’ve got a firewall, anti-virus, additional spyware/adware protection running and Reg cure. I swear it takes most of that these days to keep the bad guys out of your system.
I think it’s the Reg cure that’s making the biggest difference. On my old PCs, I didn’t have that and it just slowed down, corrupted config, over the course of 3 years. With Reg cure running, it cleans up hundreds of registry problems twice a week and even though this PC is about 3 years old now, it’s running like it’s new.

    • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

My gf asked me to take a look at her friend’s computer that was ripe with viruses, spyware, adware, etc. The computer was almost unsalvageable and very close to requiring a complete system recovery using the Disks supplied with the computer. This of course returns the computer to its virgin state and you lose everything on the computer. Now I don’t repair computers for a living but I have some basic knowledge of computers. That computer had “finallyfast” on it and that software did absolutely nothing but interestingly it was tagged as spyware by one of the anti-spyware programs I used to get rid of the garbage on the computer. If you’re interested and give me your e-mail address I’ll tell you what I did to clear her computer of all the garbage.

  34. TheTMinator says:

All of the heart-fealt ‘oh I feel so bad’ interviews with Pedro. I really want to help the team it hurts to be out bs….well when the rubber hits the road, we paid Petey big guaranteed money for a lot of off time. How bout a discount if you have any respect Pedro. You took the money and ran when your body failed you, but accepting a market appropriate offer from a team you did virtually nothing for since being a member in a abysmal economic meltdown is below you? C’mon…this only lowers my opinion of you. How much is enough and when is it more about sealing your legacy late in your career for a team and teammates you physically failed when they needed you rather than being a bigger fish in retirement back in your homeland in a few years. Put the vanity and pride aside. Accepting less doesn’t diminish who and what your are as a pitcher and person. Shame on you!!

    • DavidWrightIsClutch says:

thumbs up! This guy is unbelievable. Hope we do not see him in a mets uniform

  35. Johan4Cy says:

yay, pedro… ive been waiting for this. now i (pedro actually…) can prove that he can still pitch and is better than any livan hernandez or freddy garcia and win 15+ games (without injury…) and win a big game to keep us alive game 6 of the world series and we beat the yankees when santana is pitching in the next game. yay

  36. therealsince86 says:

Here’s the problem, if Pedro is signed and Livan continues to pitch well he will push for his release. Then when Pedro gets injured in the 2nd inning of his first start it’s Niese and Figgy baby.

therealsince86 hi and how are you

          • therealsince86 says:

I am good eric, thanks for asking. Just boasting while I can that I have all my NCAA picks right so far. LOL I am usually out of the pool by now.

Anyway, Pedro on 1-2 million? I don’t like the guaranteed part, but I will not be upset at all. That’s the thing that bothers me the most on this site is that some completely refuse to see the other side of a story. I did not like the Oliver Perez signing but I understand why they did it. I wanted Tex but I understand why they did not get him.
This site has just been draining lately.

          • eric23 says:

yea i see potential in perez but idk he worries me too much. They needed to get him after missing out on the consistent lowe but i’m feeling another CrAzY year with him. Tex would be nice but who can compete with the yanks this offseason

          • therealsince86 says:

Agreed, I wanted Lowe too but what he got from Atlanta was ridiculous. If they had went over that amount I would have been ok with it but that would have been WAY too much.
I still think they should have signed Perez AND Garland.

          • eric23 says:

yea i liked garland too as he eats up inning like livan hernandez but he pitches at a higher level

  37. therealsince86 says:

Yhency Brazoban was released today. I would not mind him getting a AAA deal. No shot of the majors right now but man he was a top prospect at one time. Seems a long time ago now.

  38. nyj0126 says:

The Pudge signing is still not official. With Schneider possibly out, why don’t the Mets try to outbid the Astros? He’s yet to make it official. Perhaps it’s because he’s waiting for more guaranteed money? Or trying to get the Mets interested now? He’s guaranteed 1.5 million and has 1.5 million in incentives with this deal. Maybe we could offer him 2 million guaranteed? The worst case scenario is we hold 3 catchers and use Ramon Castro as the right-handed bat on the bench. Or, if this deal becomes official, with Aaron Boone having open heart surgery, maybe offer Fernando Tatis to the Astros for Pudge? He’s paid 1.7 million.

    • therealsince86 says:

I wanted Pudge too but he is just a physical away.

teams dont trade players right after they sign them.

although we have Robinson Cancel anyway so were perfectly fine at Catcher…

  39. nyj0126 says:

With the way Evans is hitting this Spring, he may be as good as Tatis now, which is why I questioned that. But either way, I thought and still do think Pudge can help us, especially with this news on Schneider.

  40. nyj0126 says:

Will Ohman’s still sitting out there waiting for a job. His value isn’t going to get any higher so I don’t see why they don’t offer up that 1.6 million they saved on Duaner for him.

  41. nyj0126 says:

If we’re cursing at the TV because Ron Villone isn’t cutting it, you can blame it on Wilpon. It’s not even a ”coupon”, because he saved money on cutting Sanchez. Not signing Ohman, knowing the Phillies might grab him, is just cheap.

    • therealsince86 says:

But why haven’t the Phillies or anyone else? Maybe there is something we don’t know.

  42. MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t know…odds Pedro actually signs with the Mets? I’m putting it at 20% or less right now.
Do we realistically think Pedro can give us the same as what Livan/Niese and possibly Redding combined can this year? I have to be thinking no at this point. I just have no confidence he can stay healthy and I can’t see the point in losing Livan, especially if Pedro can’t make most of his starts.

    • therealsince86 says:

That for sure is my fear. What happens to my old subaru while I am leasing my even older mustang? When the engine blows on my mustang do I still get my subaru back? They are both most likely going to get me to the same location.

  43. therealsince86 says:

Mets5rocks, just got back on while watching the tournament.
Anyway, I said below that I am still not big on a guarnteed spot for Pedro but with Redding injured it does free a spot up. I think it depends on Livan as well. We he be content with being a longman? If he request a release and we are stuck with the OFT-injured Pedro and no ready backups we will really be in trouble.
I have no problem with 2 million or less but the roster spot worries me.

    • Mets5rocks says:

TRS, an excellent point on the roster spot to be sure. I know someone on here mentioned that Livan would ask for a release if he were relegated to the bullpen, is that true do you know? To me, something has to be up if they even made him an offer, a week ago they allegedly had no interest what so ever! Hmmmm the Thot Plickens! lol

      • therealsince86 says:

It will be interesting if the sign Pedro and Livan continues to pitch well. If you are Livan and you will easily get a SP job SOMEWHERE then why agree to be longman? That’s IF Livan can even be longman. I don’t see any way he would go and hang out at AAA and wait on Pedro to get injured.
I have not read the actuall article. Does it say they made the offer today or could it have been made much earlier?

        • Mets5rocks says:

I was thinking the same thing about Livan and the possibility he might want to sign elsewhere if Pedro were signed, then it occured to me that the only teams that really have a need for his durable, but limited services aren’t really contenders and Livan isn’t getting any younger and he wants to WIN so I don’t know that he would leave unless lured away by a crazy contract which I don’t see happening! Put it this way if Pedro only warants a 2 million guaranteed contract after the clinic he put on in the WBC (ALBEIT AGAINST THE DUTCH), then Livan would have to be thinking geez, I’d be lucky to get half that on the market right now, and he already makes that with the Mets as long as he makes the roster. So what would be his incentive to leave?
As far as when the offer was made it doesn’t say, but it infers that the offer was made very recently to Pedro.

          • oleosmirf says:

Pedro isnt signing for that small of contract and the Mets know that.

This was just an attempt to appease the fans, nothing more and if on the odd change he did sign it, well there’s your 5th starter and if not Livan has been outstanding this spring…

  44. MikeScig! says:

what I can’t undertsand is why anyone cares what the Met’s *might* pay Pedro if they were to sign him?

It won’t affect Mets in any way. Do you really think they won’t have “payroll flexibility” mid-season if they need it?

the entire outfield is under paid [Beltran has some defered money IRCC which lowers his bease salary a chunk.] We pay peanuts for Wright and Reyes [which won;t be the case on their next contracts].

A few key spots an dpitching is where the money is spent on the Mets roster.

But again, why do we, as fans, care what the Mets offer Pedro? If you get 20-25 starts and 10-12 Wins out of Pedro and you pay 5 million, serisouly, what is wrong with that deal?

Could be me, but I am curious to see what you guys think.
