Health: Wright’s Toe

By Mike Nichols on Mar 19, 2009, 8:41 am

According to MLB.com, David Wright cracked a toe nail while fouling a ball off his left foot in last night’s loss to Venezuela in the WBC.

Manager Davey Johnson said Wright tore the entire nail off his toe.

“I’ll be all right,” Wright said, who will play in the semifinals this weekend at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

“It’s a little sore… It’s tough to put weight on it.”

Wright had an X-ray following the game, which was negative.

certain things never fail to make me cringe, and the thought of ripping off a nail is one of them

Agreed! How can ripping your toe nail off be classified as just, “Sore”?

This is something that is going to nag. he wont say anything but trust me… that toe is going to be sore for a month at minimum

I’m sure his toe will eventually be sore, but right now, that toe must be unbearable.

      Mar 19, 2009, 9:37 am at 9:37 am #

I actually had that happen to me once… not from a foul ball but from a kitchen drawer falling on my foot. Lost the nail on my big toe. OUCH…. It was sore for a few days for sure, but with proper care and protection David should be OK. He will need to keep it wrapped for a while, and it will be tender, but it will be OK. Just as long as there was no fracture or damage to the bone, that’s the main thing. The nail WILL grow back.

Just dont go fouling off any more balls on that foot, OK David !!!

Wow! David may very well end up wearing a shin guard that extends to his foot. I can imagine how tender and sore the toe may be. But, I really thought a ripped toe nail would be painful. Thankfully, as mentioned, X-rays were negative. No broken bones!

yea, i am whole-heartedly against the wbc but this one’s kinda hard to blame on tournament. it would be one thing if he was busting it and pulled a hammy but this could have happened in spring training easily

I love watching that clip — I was at a bar when this happened… right before David was up at bat the bartender told me he didn’t serve Met fans (I was in a green Mets shirt for St. Patty’s) — after that hit, the bartender gave me a free round of beers while the bar cheered U S A.
i wish the season would just start already!

      Just remember this …

With runners in scoring position, Wright has better career numbers than the player you worship. And in 1986, the player you worship popped out and was back in the clubhouse swigging a beer as the Mets staged their greatest “clutch” comeback in franchise history.

      • Mexworshipper
        Mar 19, 2009, 10:10 am at 10:10 am #

The swigging beer is all speculation, but funny. I love DW as much as any Met fan, but the frustration of the Mets’ leaving runners in scoring position over the last few years is building up. I know DW tries harder than most, but it seems that he is getting frustrated at the high pressure moments and changes his approach, which makes it worse.

        • VCarver
          Mar 19, 2009, 11:40 am at 11:40 am #

I don’t think the beer drinking is speculation at all. I think Mex admitted to it. And, at any rate, he was back in the clubhouse at that point. He also has a worse career BA and OPS with runners in scoring position than Wright.

So it was just ironic that the player you worship is not any better than the one you were bashing.

And I’m not sure what the frustration has to do with your original post. All the players were frustrated the last two years, and especially at the bullpen.

            Mar 19, 2009, 12:53 pm at 12:53 pm #

I was saying that the part about Mex drinking beer during the comeback was speculation. Lord knows he partied back then, which is well documented.

Nonethelss, it is a fair point that DW has better numbers in those situations.

However, David’s numbers are going down in that area, which may be a concern. I want DW to succeed. If I had to pick, I would want David batting in those situations more than anyone else on the team. But, he seems to get out of his game during those at bats sometimes.

            Mar 19, 2009, 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm #

LOL, yeah, I know that’s what you were saying. But he’s said himself he was in Davey Johnson’s office drinking a beer and watching the game on the TV after he popped out.

As for trends, the sample size in years is too small to say there’s a clear trend for Wright. And his numbers actually went up from 2005 to 2006 w-RISP. So I don’t think there is anything to worry about.

Wright is certainly a player that it would be very hard for us to do without. Let’s see if the USA can as an experiment instead of us. The guy has lost his entire toenail and he’s gonna keep playing with the start of a long season where we have no meaningful replacement for him. I don’t need to be a doctor to see that this is wrong. Being tough, macho, patriotic or whatever won’t minimize the risk that going any further will do to the Mets. I’m sure the doctors have ways to deal with this and keep the guy on the field and if this was the World Series or September with the winter looming it would be one thing, but this is the WBC. There has to be a point where Wright, Omar and all of us decide if our loyalty is to the US team, WBC, MLB or the NY Mets. Mine is ONLY with the Mets. The problem always for the Mets is that they have too many folks involved in the decisionmaking and too much of their fanbase that doesn’t have the NY Mets as Priority #1.

The WBC needs to eliminate these useless seeding games. Have the seeding determined by something like run differential. Then eliminate some of the off days and you have a 10-day tourney instead of 2+ weeks. A shorter tournament also makes it more feasible for November.

And they need to increase rosters. And what the hell is someone like Latroy Hawkins doing on the U.S. team? That’s like a death wish.

Well its all about participation. From what i understand, some players need to be on like a waiting list, just in case something happens to the starter. Sort of what happened with pedrioa and roberts. From what i heard with the MLB announcers, Davey has NO BENCH. Davey only has the backup catcher and thats it. Also the rules prohibiting the use of players on certian days also play a role. Im sure if davey had it his way, Hawkins wouldnt pick up a ball.

      • VCarver
        Mar 19, 2009, 9:37 am at 9:37 am #

dirty, why is Hawkins even on the team? He was released by the Yankees last season he was so bad. He shouldn’t even be on a contingency roster. If it’s because they were so hard up for U.S. pitchers to participate because either they or their teams nixed the idea, then they should move the tournament to November. If it’s held then, clubs would be less concerned about injuries to players because they’d have 4 month

        • VCarver

and thus the issue with participation carver. I agree 100% they should move it to november but i think MLB is still gaguing this thing and seeing if its worth while. Hawkins was awful for the yanks but i guess given the rules(im not 100% sure) about using pitchers on consecutive days played a part in seeing hawkins last nite.

            Mar 19, 2009, 9:51 am at 9:51 am #

I’m not sure teams would want their star pitchers throwing pitches in November after a long season and a full Spring Training/exhibition season.

At least now, the pitches they throw are only in place of the pitches they would be throwing during Spring Training. Pitches in November would be additional pitches.

My preference would also be for November but I don’t see it happening.

          • VCarver
            Mar 19, 2009, 10:00 am at 10:00 am #

Wanny, I think the teams have much more concern with a pitcher getting hurt throwing at max effort in March than they would in November. In November, they are still in shape, more or less, and a one-week camp before the start of a November tourney will help ensure that any rust can be shaken off.

With the timing now, too many players are barred from participating — Santana, Lincecum, Hamels, Sabathia, Nathan, Papelbon, Halladay, Lidge, Pujols, etc.

            Mar 19, 2009, 10:06 am at 10:06 am #

i hear you wanny but then poeple get mad at sojo for letting ollie throw 85 pitches. Its a problem no matter what. I think maybe november or december would be ok since it would give them time to recover after a long season. Only problem is that is the HEART of FA time and there might be an issue with an agent and his players participating. No matter when they play its going to be a problem. I am in agreement it should be in november as most players play some sort of winterball or workout.

          • Wanny2
            Mar 19, 2009, 10:13 am at 10:13 am #

I agree that there is no right time. And I also agree with VCarver that there’s a difference between max effort pitching and something less than that.

I am just guessing that with the current craze over innings limits, pitch counts, etc. that teams would prefer that pitchers not add any additional pitches.

I don’t know which way the science and the medicine would be more appropriate in the debate.

I can tell you that Vinny Castilla probably ruined any chance of Oliver Perez ever piching for Mexico again. Even Oliver said it was too many pitches for him at the time.

right i agree 718 and im not talking about that. Of course you can weigh in your opinion on stuff like that, but when you have 2 or 3 people jsut posting “sign manny” and people respond saying shut up or something negative, your just giving them the attention they wanted in the first place. Then you have others forming a group because their ideas are contested…while alex contends he was joking…to constantly keep bringing it up speaks to the conrary. I like this blog and ill keep posting but its getting a bit childish as i posted yesterday and nobody can debate that.

Yes you have your views on wright that the majority of us disagree with and its duely noted, but at least you try to defend your point. I was ribbing real before about the president thing but it gets tiring rehashing the same arguments over and over again. Idk i guess i just would like there to be more constructive debates rather half a day fighting about it and insulting each other about their ideas. yes there is. November or december is a good time for this. Only problem is football season. Now what i think MLB is doing is trying to gague the base on this WBC thing and depending on the outcome, they will eventually move it to the winter months after the season to increase participation and keep players in shape. I just think the WBC is in testing mode and they will eventually change the timing of it, given all the debatable opposition

            Alex, this is for you…

            Friday, February 27, 2009

You can hear it in David Wright’s voice. It kills him to talk about this, about how he seemed to morph from one of baseball’s best clutch hitters into someone who couldn’t deliver for the Mets when it counted most last season.

Part of him surely wants to publicly dismiss his ugly clutch numbers in 2008 as fluky, Still, he knows that won’t fly, in part because two straight September collapses by the Mets mean having to grit your teeth and live with the fallout, even being called chokers by Cole Hamels.

So Wright, ever accountable, stands at his locker and tries to make some sense of what went wrong. he hit only .243 with runners in scoring position, .259 with runners on third and less than two outs and .235 with the bases loaded.

            Wright shrugs at the discrepancy.

Carver, why is there a problem when making a comment about DW. Like I posted above, DW is one of my favorite players, but why is it so bad to vent about situations that occur? The Mets have choked the last few years, and it’s frustrating. Showing that frustration doesn’t make someone less of a Mets fan or less intelligent.

The problem is the way some of you are obsessed with putting an undue amount of blame for the “collapse” on Wright when the bullpen was the overwhelming culprit and no one was very clutch in September due to that putrid bullpen.

I can’t understand this obsession with blaming Wright when he was the least of their problems.

People get baited into defending the mets non stop when frankly they are not going to change their minds. Why keep rehashing the same thing. Half listening to NPR this morning and a report about a man who knocked his toenail off. It grew back cracked, which was a bit troubling. He got some kind of horse hoof ointment, which healed crack. Manicurist told him he has great nails now.
Can’t believe news has turned away from AIG to toenails.

I am a both a fan and supporter of the World Baseball Classic, but not at the expense of my favorite team’s third baseman. I was upset at Davey throughout last night’s game for not having taken Wright out. That loss did not matter much as we’re headed to the semifinals regardless of the outcome. With that said, a win in a meaningless game is not worth losing our third baseman for ANY period of time. Shame on you, Davey; shame!
