During Saturday’s 12-1 loss to the Braves, John Maine allowed five runs on six hits. He also struck out two but walked three to bring his spring ERA to 10.38.
“I’m working on things,” Maine explained to reporters. “Even though the numbers weren’t there, it seems two or three pitches could’ve made a difference… It’s frustrating because I’ve worked so hard to come back.”
In the Daily News, Adam Rubin quotes a scout as saying Maine is ‘pushing the ball,’ because, ‘he’s not fully extending his arm.’
The scout also told Rubin that Maine is ‘telegraphing his changeup.’
Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record writes, following Maine’s start, “Omar Minaya met with Jerry Manuel for 10 minutes in the manager’s office behind closed doors.”
In an article for MLB.com, ptiching coach Dan Warthen is quoted as saying, “He lost focus a little in the third, and when things didn’t go well, he got mad at himself. I wasn’t very happy with him, and he wasn’t happy either.”
…this is what spring training is for right…i mean, this is when they are supposed to be ironing out these wrinkles and figure out what is working for them, or not…time will tell if maine’s early struggles will linger into the regular season, but i am not one to panic during these spring starts…

The rest of the team is off today.
…if i was a betting man, i’d say that that Mets management will be paying very close attention to the results of today’s matchup, and the front-runner for that fifth spot in the rotation may become more finalized because of it…
The Mets will play tomorrow against the Astros in Kissimmee at 1 p.m.
Speaking of starting pitchers…
Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes the Mets will make a push to sign RHP Shawn Hill, who was released by the Nationals last week.
In 2008, Hill went 1-5 in 12 games with a 5.83 ERA in 63 innings pitched.
