Random: LoDuca, Kaz, Glavine and Endy

By Matthew Cerrone on Mar 24, 2009, 10:44 am

I’m at the Mets Clubhouse store in Manhattan, waiting to film a segment for Mets Weekly, and the store is still selling Endy Chavez, Kaz Matsui, Tom Glavine and Paul LoDuca t-shirts for $7.99.

Hilarious.

The guy says he last sold a LoDuca shirt around the holidays.

Well, we now know that Paul Lo Duca posts as “number15″. You wore 16, right?

Kidding. I like Lo Duca, too. Before you drop $ on the T-shirt, however, I saw his “authentic” jersey on sale at MLB.com for $40, which is something like 70% off.

in 06 a friend from an old job and I were going to a game together for the first time. He wore a Mo Vaugh jersey. I almost slapped him until he told me that his last name was Vaughn. Maybe thats why that guy had a Marrero

I will one up the Marrero jersey…Some how, I have ended up with a collection jersey T’s of terrible 2nd basemen we have had…Alomar, Matsui, and Baerga (that one was a gift…)…One day in 2007, I was headed to the Sunday night Subway Series game at Shea with two friends who needed to borrow Mets gear. I thought it would be kinda funny if the three of us wore those shirts….Imagine getting off the 7 train, and walking to Shea Stadium, behind 3 guys, wearing a Baerga, Alomar, and Matsui shirt (each was a different color of course, Baerga in blue, Alomar in orange, Kaz in black)….Lets just say we got a LOT of feedback about it, including one person willing to spring for a new shirt….It was also a really cold night, so we went into the clubhouse store to get a sweatshirts from the clearance isle….One of the workers there gave my friend in the Baerga shirt a free LoDuca shirt, to “get with the times”…….too bad they lost the game.

    8 dollars??
Either put a 2 dollar sticker on the shirt, or give them to the Salvation Army or those kids in Africa who got stuck with the New England Patriots Superbowl Champion t-shirts after the Giants won the SB. I’m not sure who’s buying that shirt at 8 dollars. If you want a cheap garbage t-shirt, walk outside that store and I’m sure you can get like 6 I <3 NY shirst for 8 dollars

    Cautiously optimistic:

Our 2b posted a .354 OBP and 17 steals in 300 ABs with two bum knees last year. We have done a lot worse.

If he truly has recovered, put him down for .290 BA, .360 OBP, 25 steals and very good defense this year. In the non-steroid era, that’s practically an all-star.

Also, Delgado had surgery on both wrists a couple of years ago and now seems recovered and ready to make a final push for HOF status. Two more years of 35 HR, 100 RBI and a world championship and he is a first ballot – assuming no steroid rumors come out.

I am pretty sure the Mets Clubhouse and the Yankees Clubhouse are all owned by MLB NOT the teams so to assume the stores would have different policies is pretty far fetched.

My fiance worked next door to the Yankee Clubhouse shop and they did sell ex-player shirts and jerseys. It is a clearance they have to try and move the merchandise.

Anyone who knows the clubhouse stores knows the player shirts and jerseys (current players) are always up on the wall not on a rack in the middle of the store. With that said it is usually a round rack and things are mixed in but this looks like they have a ton of them.

That’s all valid, except the Yankees must push harder. They were selling chamberlain shirts since his first pitch because they knew enough would buy them to profit. The Mets need to realize that they should get Pelfrey and Murphy and Maine and Perez and all that stuff out a little harder.

It’s great that they still have the anti-theft device on all the Wagner shirts. Yep, that there’s a pretty hot item.

They also have a bunch of Pedro, Wagner and a few other authentic jerseys for 50% off (which is still a steep $120), as well as Wright, Reyes and other good player authentics at 50% because they are last year’s model with the Shea patch. I’d grab one but I already have pinstripe and black authentics, and the road grays aren’t on sale.

Not all jerseys of former players get discounted – they were still selling Piazza jerseys for full price as late as ’07.

      2) he has a visible passion for the game, which fans love to see. i look back fondly on his tenure as a met because when your team seems to fizzle out at the end of the year with no sense of urgency or intensity (for the most part), sometimes you wish you had more players on your team that you know care deeply about winning

he hit .318 that year and it was a special year. but really, this is why i feel the way i do: the last two years, what is the sentiment you get from the players in the post-game interviews during a tough stretch? it’s mostly a sullen, sad, disipointed feeling (this applies to reyes, wright, beltran, delgado, etc.). you’ll also get cookie-cutter answers like ‘we just have to play better’ or ‘we’re gonna put it behind us and go get ‘em tomorrow’. but the fans are more than just disappointed; they are angry, and they want to see the players just as angry as they are. lo duca was angry when things weren’t going well. he shared the feelings of the fanbase, unlike most other players, which is why he is an endearing personality, at least in my eyes. he was also candid and truthful to the media, while most others give you cliche after cliche and artfully say a lot without really saying anything

In 2006 my wife wanted to buy a Mets t-shirt to wear to an upcoming game. She really wanted to get a Matsui shirt because she felt bad he was constantly getting booed. I tried to point her in the direction of the Wright shirts, but nope, she wanted to get a Matsui to show her support. I was just glad she was showing interest in the Mets.

On the day of the game she proudly donned her brand new Matsui shirt and her pink Mets cap. She was heckled for wearing that shirt while walking to the subway, on the subway, during the game, and on the trip back home. She was crushed. About a week later Matsui was traded and the shirt was briefly downgraded to gym attire before being thrown out.
