News: Ojeda and Carlin to host on SNY

by Matthew Cerrone on March 26th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

SNY finally announced today Bob Ojeda will be their lead studio analyst and Chris Carlin will be the new host for pre- and post-game.

ojeda once let me wear his 1986 World Championship Ring, while i waited in line to buy Opening Day Mets tickets at Shea Stadium back in 1999… back then, in the ‘old days,’ fans would line up around the stadium and be moved like cattle from bin to bin, in an orderly fashion, in advance of reaching the ticket window, where you’d lock up tickets… anyway, former players would often work the line, signing autographs, passing out hot chocolate and talking with fans… i miss that experience, as cold as it was

Also, according to the press release, “In addition, SNY will produce a comprehensive post-game show following every Mets game this season – including Mets games on PIX11, FOX and ESPN.  Darryl Strawberry will also be a contributing analyst.”

News: Oliver Perez says He Feels Good

by Matthew Cerrone on March 26th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

According to David Lennon on his blog for Newsday, “Oliver Perez denied this morning that he is out of shape.”

Perez is quoted as saying, “I feel good.”

To read more on Perez, including additional quotes from him on his schedule and overall health, read Adam Rubin’s blog for the Daily News, Steve Popper’s blog for the Bergen Record, and Bart Hubbuch’s blog for the New York Post.

his weight and conditioning is still the least of my concerns… i trust he will whip in to shape before Opening Day, if he isn’t already… i am still far more worried about his head, and his mental state, and whether he can stick with what is working for him, whenever it starts working, instead of going off the deep end

Links: 1982, Perez, Fantasy, and Starters

by Regis Courtemanche on March 26th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

On YouTube, there’s an interesting video from 1982 Opening Day at Shea Stadium.

…the cars and the clothes remind me of when i was five years old, great stuff here…something questionable is going on however around eight minutes in, hmmm…

Brooklyn Met Fan wonders who Oliver Perez is, writing, “If Perez and Maine both perform below expectations we’re in BIG trouble.”

Amazin’ Avenue offers up their fantasy review for Mets players, noting, “The Daniel Murphy-means-business hype machine hasn’t hit fantasy circles yet, but there’s sure to be a handful of crazy Mets fans who draft him.  If Murphy starts to spell Castillo at second, however, his value quadruples.”

Finally, new SNY addition Dan Graziano discusses how, although the Mets have fixed their bullpen, their biggest concern now lies surprisingly in their starting rotation.

…their performance so far is a bit concerning, but i never take spring training results too seriously…that being said, they need to get their acts together in a hurry as there are only eleven days until the games actually count…

Read: Ollie Out of Shape, Bullpen looks Good

by Jordan Zakarin on March 26th, 2009 at 9:00 am

In yesterday’s game, Oliver Perez gave up six runs on six walks and five hits in just 3.2 innings pitched.

Dan Warthen, speaking about Perez, as quoted by Peter Botte in the Daily News:

“I think he’s out of shape, the arm is out of shape. It’s a combination. Since he’s come back we really haven’t seen the life out of the hand, the ball is just not jumping out right now… I think he’s gained a little weight and needs to start pushing himself a little more.”

Warthen said that Perez did not do his workouts at the WBC, which has led to these problems.

…maybe he’s buying too many fine pastries with that $36 million contract, in an attempt to become the ace of cakes…

…bad Food Network reference, i apologize… those cakes don’t even look that delicious, as impressive as they are…

Meanwhile, the Daily News also reports that the team’s two other big off-season pitching acquisitions, Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz, both looked good in tossing scoreless innings during a minor-league intrasquad game – Sean Green tossed two scoreless innings as well.

By the way, the Mets released LHP Valerio De Los Santos.

However, if the need for help in the pen does arise, former Met reliever Royce Ring, who was acquired in the Roberto Alomar trade, is now available on waivers after being outrighted by the Cardinals.

Notes: Manuel on Perez, Maine, Bench, etc.

by Matthew Cerrone on March 26th, 2009 at 7:45 am

Yesterday, after the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that David Wright will return to the lineup on Friday.

He also noted Ryan Church will play later today, when the team travels to Jupiter to face the Cardinals.

In yesterday’s game, Oliver Perez gave up six runs on six walks and five hits in just 3.2 innings pitched.

Speaking about Perez, Manuel said, “When you don’t have command, and you don’t have extra velocity, you’re gonna struggle.”

Manuel said he will need to pay close attention to what happens with Perez during the rest of spring training, again saying, “We’ve just got to pay close attention to him.”

Today will be Maine’s first start using a new and improved, longer stride in his delivery, and a different grip for his slider.

He said he is very happy with the bullpen, adding how he saw five ‘really good’ relievers today.

Lastly, Manuel said the final spot on the bench will mostly depend on the make up of rest of team, though the final decision will not be made until the team travels north to New York.
