postGame: Orioles 5 Mets 1

by Matthew Cerrone on March 29th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

The Orioles defeated the Mets, 5–1, today in Fort Lauderdale.

Mike Pelfrey got one out in the first inning, after which the game was delayed due to rain.

Pelfrey did not return, nor did Luis Castillo, following a 60–minute delay.

Pelfrey is next scheduled to pitch Thursday.

…i admit, i freaked out a bit when i looked at the box score and saw that he was pulled from the game following just one inning…

…thankfully, it was due to rain… but, i feared the worst

Buzz: Tigers and Mets were talking Stokes

by Matthew Cerrone on March 29th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

“The Tigers had serious discussions with the Mets in recent days about relief pitcher Brian Stokes,” reports the Detroit Free Press.

However, according to the report:

“The chances for a deal fell dramatically when the Mets determined that Stokes was likely to make their Opening Day roster.”

By the way, the reports says the Tigers have been shopping 1B-OF Marcus Thames, who the Mets have been linked to in rumor at various times over the last two years.

Note: Game on in Citi Field, Live-Stream

by Matthew Cerrone on March 29th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

The Mets will christen their new ballpark today, when the St. John’s Red Storm take on the Georgetown Hoyas in Citi Field.

To read more about the event, check out Mike Vaccaro’s report for the New York Post.

In a post to Newsday, Anthony Rieber uploaded a photo of the field with the tarp on, saying, “Wow.  You people are going to love this place.”

The game will not be broadcast on SNY.

However, to get a live, inside look of Citi Field, go to Stadium Insider, who is live-streaming from his HTC Touch Pro.

that is amazing, though i am pretty certain what they’re doing is illegal and against MLB policy, i.e., to live stream from inside a major league stadium… but, it’s awesome neverthelessand a great example of how quick technology is moving these days

Links: Ojeda, Putz, SNY and Bobby V

by Matthew Cerrone on March 29th, 2009 at 9:23 am

In the Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch profiles Bob Ojeda, who will join SNY for pre– and post-game analysis.

Brian Costa of the Star-Ledger posts a Q&A with J.J. Putz, who talks about New York, being a set-up guy, knowing Tom Brady, playing practical jokes, and the pronunciation of his last name.

Gary Cohen and Bob Murphy tied, 382 votes each, in the Mets Announcer Tournament on Amazin Avenue.

Lastly, Bobby Valentine will not return to manage the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan next season, due to the economy.

However, according to the New York Times, Valentine would be the prefect choice to manage Team USA in the next WBC.

i wish SNY could hire bobby v to do in-studio work during their pre– and post-game shows, like ojeda… i enjoyed valentine so much when he was on Baseball Tonight with ESPN… plus, while i love the 1986 Mets, i’d like to see the late 90’s teams represented more on SNY… i loved those guys

Buzz: Dessens in Mix for Bullpen Spot

by Matthew Cerrone on March 29th, 2009 at 8:57 am

According to the New York Times, “The Mets have discussed keeping the veteran right-hander Elmer Dessens as a long reliever.”

Dessens has thrown just one inning in two appearances since returning from the World Baseball Classic.

…it appears that dessens, Brian Stokes, Darren O’Day and Fernando Nieve are essentially competing for the final two spots in the bullpen, to be teamed with Bobby Parnell, J.J. Putz, Sean Green, Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez

…i still rank them as o’day, then stokes and dessens, and then nieve… o’day gives a different look and pitch to both lefties and righties, plus he’s a Rule 5 pick, so i see him as being pretty close to a lock

Last night, Manuel referred to Dessens as a ‘Darren Oliver type,’ noting how Oliver pitched both in short relief and long relief, and was capable of being a starting pitcher, in 2006; something Dessens can do as well.

so can stokes, though…also, stokes is also out of options, i think
