Links: Valentin Released, Q&A and SI predicts Mets

By Matthew Cerrone on Mar 31, 2009, 1:39 pm

The Mets officially released Jose Valentin, as well as Tony Armas Jr. and Junior Spivey, all of whom are now free agents.

…wow, that was quick junior as for the stache, good luck, thanks for the memories, and embrace the next phase of your baseball career

In a post to Razzball, I took part in a Q&A about the Mets, which touches on questions like what to expect from Carlos Delgado and John Maine.

Speaking of which, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com writes about Citi Field, and whether it will be a hitter’s or pitcher’s park.

Lastly, in their upcoming baseball preview, Sports Illustrated will predict that the Mets will win the NL East; after which the they will defeat the Dodgers in the first round of the playoffs, then defeat the Cubs in the NLCS, all culminating in a World Championship against the Angels.

dear… lord… thanks, SI… thanks a lot…

I fully expect circulation of SI to dip dramatically in the Philadelphia/South Jersey/Delaware area.

    Forget 2009
If SI picks us, we might as well start looking towards 2010 now…
    Let’s Go Mets regardless

I like the fact the Mets are contending…and without sounding superstitious…which I am, but did we just receive the SI Jinx?

I question their picking the Angels more than the Mets. Lackey’s injury and their not replacing Teixeira’s bat have to make you wonder whether the California Angels of Los Angeles Which is Near Anaheim will contend this year.

I think the angels have 0 chance of making the world series. They lost their best bat, a record setting closer and their replacements are worse.

This is all a crap shoot…I mean, how many writers, fans etc had the Phillies winning it last year?

A lot has to break a teams way for that ellusive championship.

But I really hope SI is right.

Hopefully it’s with the Mets and he replaces Alomar.

I thought that was basically the deal with him. He was going to become part of the Mets Organization unless he was able to find a major league job with someone else. He must have some interest.

      Mar 31, 2009, 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #

I’d love to see valentin part of this organization somewhere. I think he really did a great job with Reyes, and he could be a great influence on the organization’s youth.

plus, he can teach them how to grow a stache and make it work.

    Mets 2008 Losses

    6 shutouts
    15 one run
    17 two runs
    8 three runs
    10 four runs
    8 five runs
    4 six runs
    4 seven runs
    1 eight runs

That’s 17 losses when we scored 5 or more runs. 27 losses when we scored 4 or more runs. Behind a competent pitching staff and bullpen, at least half of those 17 are wins.

    Let’s do this.

What was the deal with Spivey? He came
and went in about a week and 1/2. Why
spend the money (granted it was not much)
tlo give this guy a try? Don’t we have any
    type of scouting?

For real? What about that lineup isn’t up and down, well think before the nobody’s in that lineup had career years…They are just as good an offense as we are.

          Rollins
          Werth (career year)
          Utley
          Howard
          Feliz (career year)
          Ibanez
          Victorino (career year)
          Ruiz (career year)

K-Rod and Putz just have to perform as expected based on history and this team is significantly better than last year . This team won 89 games last season with a horrific bullpen for most of the season. An average decent bullpen and this team wins 95 games. To illustrate how bad the Met bullpen was last year compared to the Phillies, if the games had ended after six innings last season, the Mets would’ve won the NL East by 11 games

Does anyone keep track of past predictions? I’d be curious to see how SI has done over the last 5, 10 or 20 years with these things.

I don’t into the SI curse. Kathy Ireland and Elle McPherson have both been featured on the cover and both still look plenty good.

First the Dodger and then the Cubs … nice to see they got the Mets against two old, classic MLB teams

On paper, they really look like champs when you take the same rotation and lineup from last year and add in Frankie Rodriquez and Putz.
